So dam good I ordered the traditional eggs Benedict! The hollandaise was light and fluffy ladled over perfectly poached eggs! On top of a slice challah bread! Not only was the Benedict outstanding what I thought would be same old same old breakfast potatoes that I would have to drench with catsup and hot sauce. The potatoes had rosemary and a touch of some other herb. As I gobbled a spoonful in my hungry mouth my tastebud went on flavor savor overload! I've been here several times over the years of being in the neighborhood. Sadly, each time I have felt like the service has not been friendly or attentive. This last time we were seated promptly-there was no wait-but nobody came around to give us waters for quite a long time. There were 4 other parties seated after us and 3 of the 4 were given waters before us. We were ready to order by the time we got our waters and coffee. The other tables seated after us all got their food before us and finally I asked our waitress about our order. Our food came out shortly thereafter. A cold scramble, decent pancakes, and a piping hot broiled-not quite burnt-quiche. The food was not special enough, nor were they so busy that we could overlook the lack of care/service. They have been my go to coffee and quick bite stop before I head in. The staff are welcoming, fast and laid back. Seating can be hard to find at times as there are just a couple tables in back and a bar top plus 3 small tables in front, which are my first picks as they each sit next to a french door with windows. I love when they pop them open in the summer. Some notes: it is kid friendly as a lot of moms do come in with their children but not a lot of room for strollers. They always have music playing. I've been to the Cookery for dinner and breakfast. If you want savory, rich, comfort food in a hip meets quaint environment this is it. For dinner we and the chicken pot pie and Bolognese. The pot pie was a puff pastry on top of a souflee dish of pot pie innards. It was perfect for the rainy day. The Bolognese was out of this world. My partner and I were sharing and it was hard to share: noodles handcrafted at Devil's Food. For breakfast I had a cambric tea, the biscuit and gravy AND a pancake. It was a lot of food and to sit on the bench out front after to digest before biking home. You could never say the gravy lacked flavor. Well, we didn't expect to find this place, but the Yelpers led us to it! Walking in feels like coming over to grandma's house. It's old, with vintage like teal paint on the walls and old chandeliers. There's is also a collection of cheese graters and serving plates on the wall I started with a mimosa on a Wednesday, because, I'm an adult and I can! My hubby basically had a two egg breakfast and side of biscuits and gravy. The gravy was deeeelicious and topped a drop style tasty biscuit. I had the best quiche ever!!! She had me at the filling, ham, mushrooms and cheese, but it was the crust that really shined. It was made with a laminated dough (like a croissant) and was perfectly buttery and flaky. Wow! Hot damn if Wash Park isn't like the cutest neighborhood in the history of adorable neighborhoods!!!! We found Devil's Food and initially went into the café side where you can sit and get brunch. We ended up heading to the bakery but this side wasn't as visually appealing as the café. In the café - it was bright and airy and just very pretty. You can tell that on a Monday morning you get a particular crowd of local people who are able to "do lunch" if you will unlike the rest of us work dorks! Staff: Umm, they left a little to be desired and weren't really interested in chatting much but hey, they did what they needed to do and somedays for all of us that is and has to be good enough. Drink: We ordered at the counter - my husband a regular large latte and myself a large honey lavender latte. My latte was on point and just sweet enough to satisfy my taste. Food: We ordered two items to split. The ham and gruyere croissant (warmed) which was super good. Light, crispy, and buttery with a lot of flavor from the ham and cheese itself. We also ordered the jalapeno cream cheese pop-tart which was more like a turnover/empanada (warmed) thing but hey call it whatever you want it was good. A lot of ooey gooey inside with a light crust. Our first visit to Denver's famous Washington Park. DFB is a short 5 min ride from the bike loop. Interior has numerous antiquity fixtures - however the food is why we went. Our server - 'Aaron' was attentive and did not disappoint us in his description of the menu. Warm day in the mid 80's and were in need of food. I loved this place so much I went back 3 times in my short 2 day trip to Denver. I even bought a bunch of pastries to take home to my family and only 1/3rd made it . The coffee is great although I wish they had some kind of mocha or chocolate to add. The Koung Aman was amazing and I was sad I could only have it once as they ran out both of the other times. The cookies are that perfect balance of chewy and crunchy without crumbling apart in your hands. I didn't want to share the chocolate bundt cake at all but my partner forced me to let her have a bite. The lines are usually long but it would go by super fast and the setup is super adorable. I like how the wall to kitchen is completely open and you can watch them whipping up more yummys. The next day I went and had the chicken and waffles and it was so scrumptious. The sausage gravy was the best I've had outside of my house and wasn't expecting it to be so flavorful as it was. Kelly recommended to add cholula hot sauce but it wasn't even necessary. Love this bakery! The staff is SUPER friendly and they make pastries in house every day. If you order the coffee cake, it feels like they give you a whole cake, which is amazing compared to some shops who give you a little sliver of food. The store is quaint with table or bar seating. This could be such an amazing place but sadly the staff kills the vibe. First Gent behind counter (dedicated only to serving food and sweets) seemed so bitter and distraught. For a first impression his energy and fun rating was a -4. Gent #2 (register duty) was a bit more personable but just going through the motions one customer at a time (he should try the carrot cake cupcake it would make anyone feel warm inside). Gent #3 (Barista) made a heck of a London fog and cappuccino but when our order was called and he noticed I was sitting directly behind him at the bar, he still insisted that I walk around bar and pick up the order because he already had moved onto the next beverage. Totally a buzz kill as sitting at the bar at a coffee shop is half the fun. The ambience, the food and beverage quality and even the bathrooms were amazing and such an enjoyable experience. My three star review has only to do with the staff who I could only describe as an "energy suck." Quite frankly I'm not sure if you could have been more rude in your delivery. Please do not get thisclose to my face and tell me "Get off the phone. We don't allow cellphones." My friend heard her on the other end and apologized for getting me in trouble. The Mexican wedding cookie was thick and sounded great. When I tried to break off a piece it was as hard as a rock, and little pieces flew everywhere once it broke. It was hard and tasted only of butter. My Mexican wedding cookies are crispy but light and airy. Did I screw up or did you? Thankfully my friend offered up a few bites of her red velvet cream filled, chocolate covered cake. This creation is sinful, and obviously the inspiration to the bakery's name. I enjoyed my americano but disappointed you didn't offer nonfat milk. Ridiculously great food, and when you reach the last phase of your meal it will suddenly dawn on you . . . whoa! . . . this delicious food I've just had was only a warm-up to what this place is famous for--their desserts. And you'll be right. We started off with the corn and crab fritter accompanied by a bottle of their Pinot Gris and it was one of the best hors d'oeuvres we've ever shared. Followed that up with the intensely flavorful shrimp and grits and ratatouille served en croute for entrees. Each was a special treat. But the ending--the deconstructed chocolate pot d'creme s'more--really was slap yourself silly wonderful. The price is well below what you'd pay at some of the more high-end eateries in town, but absolutely just as good. The atmosphere is informal and bakery-like. Our server, Taylor, was a great guy and the perfect guide for our meal. DFBC is well-deservedly popular for breakfast and brunch, but because it hasn't been that long that they've been serving dinner the place had empty tables when we stopped in late on a Friday evening. I've popped in from time to time for something sweet and as long as I pick something chocolate, I haven't been disappointed. If I stray from the chocolate, I don't leave as happy. It can be hit or miss. I once came expecting to pick up a birthday dessert for 4 and couldn't find anything to fit the bill. Most recently, I came hoping for cupcakes. They had exactly 4 sad looking little cupcakes whose only redeeming feature was the candied violet on top, a personal favorite. I opted instead for a Devil's Food Donut though I was tempted by the brownies (a huge pie shaped wedge for only $2.50). I brought it home for a special desert later that night. It was divine. Basically a mini-chocolate bundt cake - it really did resemble a donut. The icing was thick and fudgey. Split between two people, it was the perfect dessert. Undoubtedly a place of substantial popularity, elderly couples and hipsters alike lining up for pastries or settling in for a table, it was only after perusing baked goods that change throughout breakfast, lunch and dinner that I opted for a two-top, Coffee from nearby Cultivar offering a refreshingly light roast despite refills that were slower than optimal while an opening round of pastries showed a skilled hand with lamination - the bronzed shell of an almond croissant giving way to arched caverns and lighr sweetness while the frosted cinnamon roll was rich with butter inside the tight coil. Going the extra mile to import pure maple syrup from Slopeside, and offering it alongside a single buttermilk pancake studded with kumquats as opposed to a whole stack, the batter used at Devil's Food yield an extremely puffy product compared to most and although the aforementioned ham and turkey sandwich is not fried like the classic one would be hard pressed to quibble about its quality, the pan-seared bread rich, eggy and easily maintaining its texture even after the addition of housemade jam. Unable to pass up more pastries on exit, the quickbreads, brownies and muffins all appealing while the signature cakes are not available until later in the day, it was instead in a quartet of cookies plus a roasted cherry 'pop-tart' that remaining appetite was invested, the Snickerdoodle and Oatmeal Raisin standing out compared to the others while the fruit pocket more closely resembled a hand-pie than the famous toaster pastry, a good thing by all accounts but in my opinion an undersell of the buttery shell, as well as the fresh filling, based on the naming. read more

Lovely bakery and cafe in a cute neighborhood among several boutiques. We went at 1:30 for a late lunch and there was still an hour wait. Fine with us though. We ordered coffee and went to some of the stores. Definitely worth calling ahead though if you're in a hurry. Our food was great! I ordered the scramble with white cheddar, jalapeños, and mushrooms and seasonal salad on the side. All of the ingredients were fresh and cooked perfectly. The seasonal side salad had fresh pear in it. Yummy! We also ordered the chicken and waffles. The gravy to syrup ratio was perfect. Loved the seasoning on the chicken as well. Our friend ordered the shrimp and grits. She wasn't a huge fan of the dish because it tasted a lot like shakshuka, which wasn't what she really wanted. Mmmm... I'm salivating just remembering my delicious breakfast yesterday morning at Devil's Food. Tiffany N spoke highly of this place and I now know why! Large portions, friendly service, a charming ambiance, and fresh delicious food... what could be bad about that? Nothing! Well, maybe that they were out of Italian Soda and their patio doesn't open until May, but that's not a big deal. I had an Arnold Palmer (made with their fresh squeezed lemonade), an omelette with spinach, mushroom, and fresh mozzarella (which they gladly made with egg whites per my request), perfectly buttered thickly sliced wheat bread, and breakfast potatoes. I think I found my new favorite spot, which serves breakfast all day! Don't worry, you can also get lunch there, or even just a pastry to go. I did a little mixing and matching. I got a poached egg, with toast (which was sweet chili- the fresh baked bread of the day) and a side salad which was embedded with grapes, strawberries, blueberries, and blackberries, in a balsamic vinaigrette. They had lots of amazing options to choose from here. Some things that popped out were the goat cheese and beet salad, corn bread and eggs, roasted grapefruit with brandy and brown sugar, and many other delicious looking items. This is not only my new favorite brunch spot in Denver, but it's my new favorite coffee shop! My husband and I dined here with his parents this weekend. My mother-in-law is GF so it needed to have options for her. Immediately upon being seated I ordered an almond milk latte. I had ordered too quickly, though, because I noticed on their brunch specials a honey lavender latte was listed. After stalking our waitress for a few minutes I had switched my beverage order. And thank goodness - it was divine. The subtle sweetness of the honey matched with the herbal lavender had me drinking it to the very last drop (a rarity for me). For my meal I debated between the quinoa cakes and lox Benedict. My waitress said it was a hard decision, but steered me toward the Benedict because of their housemade hollandaise sauce. The challah bread base was a nice change from the traditional English muffin. Topped with fresh tomatoes, lox and capers, then two perfectly poached eggs (this was actually quite amazing) and that wonderful hollandaise. The only thing that could (and did) make it better would be the crunchy roasted potatoes on the side. Oh, and the local Elevation ketchup.
