A Mobile institution, good old-fashioned Southern cooking. My favorite here is the fried pork chops, which are perfectly fabulous. The rutabagas are addictive; all of the vegetables are just like your Grandma used to make. The famous hot dogs are good, but not the best in town; what makes them good is the chili topping. The cheeseburger is really stellar, however. The onion rings are incredible! The ancient dining space is cramped and noisy. Parking can be a chore. Some of the charm of the place is in the inconvenience and quirkiness. But the Who's Who of Mobile eats here, from all backgrounds and vocations. The prices are reasonable. Worth a trip! read more

The service was excellent. The food was average. It was a fun little place to stop at with a history of being open a very long time.

The only reason I am not giving a 5 star is because of the extremely rude young lady at the cash register. The food is awesome and it is one of my favorite places to eat with family and friends. Our waitress was wonderful. My family has been going to the Dew Drop since it opened, which consist of my great grandparents, grandparents, my parents, my 4 brothers and sisters and now my children and grandchildren, not to mention my large extended family of aunts, uncles and cousins.That is 6 generations of Dew Drop lovers. However, I have never been treated rudely at the Dew Drop for over 50 years until yesterday. When I was paying our bill the girl at the register mumbled something and I did not hear her, so I placed my check and card down and she rudely said something like...I said to wait a minute. Then I slid the tip basket over slightly, so I could sign the long receipt and she aggressively moved it back. I said, "I just moved it over so I could sign the receipt." Then she said, " I don't like people touching my stuff." Other hostile words were said after that altercation. It was the worst experience I have ever had there, but I will go back. I love The Dew Drop. I hope the young lady behind the register was just having a bad day and does not treat anyone else that way. read more

The Dew Drop Inn is a restaurant that many non-locals will not understand. You develop an appreciation for certain tastes when you grow up on them, and I suspect it is this that endears this lovable hole in the wall to all of us Mobilians. Objectively, the food is nothing special: typical meat and three fare with hotdogs (neon pink bun pals no less) and hamburgers (strange concoctions that are more chili than burger) as well. It is always packed, and you can expect to wait for your table about half the time. Why do I love this restaurant? Because it hasn't changed much in all the years it's operated. Because there are plaques on the booths put there by high school classes circa 1930. Because a trip to this restaurant always coincided with a long yarn of stories from my parents. About how they went to high school down the road, and how their parents brought them there when they were kids too. I love it because I can't wait to do the same with my kids. A Dew Drop hamburger with a half order of steak fries (I'm not an onion ring person) and a Coke from the glass bottle is among my favorite meals and will continue to be. I encourage anyone visiting Mobile to make a stop here. The food isn't going to knock you out, but the history will (in it's defense, the food is really good, but we're not talking Michelin guide here; though I'd give it a few stars personally). I suggest ordering a hamburger and a hot dog and a half order of fries and onion rings, along with a Coke or a domestic brew (which they serve with neat little glasses). Alternatively, whatever is on the special board is usually great. Turnip greens and Lima beans are always a hit. The oyster loaf is excellent if you are partial to sea critters. Give this restaurant a shot. Keep an open mind. Try to see folks from the early 20th century sitting in the same booths you are (because they were). Come back again and again, it grows on you, I promise. And before long you'll be singing it's praises like the rest of us. read more

The Dew Drop Inn! My husband has been wanting to eat there since the first time he passed the place. He likes the Charlie Daniels song, Uneasy Rider, where he gets a flat in Jackson, Mississippi on a Saturday night...ends up at a little redneck lookin' joint called the Dew Drop Inn...kicks ole green teeth right in the knee. You may or may not have heard it. Anyway, we finally went. No green teeth in sight, thank goodness. I ordered the special of the day, which was hamburger steak, mashed potatoes and banana pudding. My husband ordered a hot dog po' boy. This was right after my newsletter on po' boys came out and I was seriously wishing someone had reviewed that so I could've put in there. Where else can you get a hot dog po' boy? My hamburger steak dinner was delicious! I love some good home cooking, and while this isn't the best I've ever had, it was a darn fine meal. The meat was good quality and the brown gravy was from a mix. The banana pudding was good, but not spectacular. The hubs loved the hot dog po' boy. He even took a picture to send to my dad. The hot dog was the red weeny kind, not something like Nathan's all beef. It had chili flavored meat on it and pickles. I tried a bite, but wasn't as infatuated with it as he was. What made the experience even better was the price. We both ate for about $20. This is definitely a place to visit, and don't worry about getting in a fight. It seems like a calm and laid back crowd. The place has been around since 1967 and the folks have mellowed out. The decor is from 1967 too, so don't expect anything fancy. Just good food. read more

Those 5 stars must have been hanging heavy with nostalgia, because the the Dew has Dropped. And sadly, I must remove some stars. Dogs were decent, yet not as messy good as I recalled. Damn I miss this place! Sorry for the language but I truly do long to eat at Dew Drop at least 2x a month. The place is unchanged from the 80s but still clean (including the bathrooms). In '84 I ate here at least once a week.. Two drop dogs, One onion ring, two Budweiser's. That was lunch and I was stockbroker! The tab was $6 with a tip. Now I go after a few tests at Mobile Infirmary. 1 drop dog, water and maybe a few onion rings. It is still about $6 and not a thing has changed (except for my crazy self). This is way up on my "to see" list for my friends out of town. it just sort of gives a glimpse into who I really am - red dye and all. read more

I guess if you grew up coming here as a kid with your grandparents, I could see where you might have some fond memories of this place and continue to live vicariously through those memories. However, if you come here a new customer as an adult, you might be asking yourself 'WHY'? What on earth is so special?? I mean, I'm all about little out of the way places that are high on 'charm' and have good food. But this place I just don't understand. We came by for a late lunch one saturday, about 130 in the afternoon. When we stepped in, every booth and table was full. And there's no where to stand and wait. So you have to stand in the middle of the waitress drink stand and uncomfortably try not to get run over. NO ONE greeted us and I had to walk over to one and ask sheepishly if we were supposed to seat ourselves. After letting one other family go ahead of us that had a baby and we weren't sure whom arrived first, we finally were able to sit down. I heard about the spectacular hotdogs, so that's what I came for and that's what we ordered. We both had the Regular Famous All the Way, I had french fries and he had onion rings. The bun is toasted and the hotdogs are the 'red hots'. No big thrill there! I could have made much better dogs AT HOME. And we traipsed all the way into Midtown to try this place. Sorry, I guess unless you are reliving some childhood memories, this place isn't worth it. read more

I have to give the Dew Drop 5 stars. There are times when I absolutely crave this place! Chili Cheeseburger Chili Cheese Dawg all the way and steak fries. I do also enjoy the Cucumber Tomato Onion salad. The quality is consistent - you get the same thing everytime. I grew up in Atlanta and have been to The Varsity often - The Dew Drop is the same style of food, and I do prefer the Dew Drop to The Varsity. The folks that work there are friendly, so are the customers. If folks don't like this place - they may not like this type of food, or maybe the simple outdated decor is not for them. But if you like simple straightforward food that tastes good time and time again, Dew Drop is your place. Enjoy! read more

This place is a must. It has always had legendary status for me-my parents ate here and their parents ate here. The chili burger is amazing, and the onion rings pair nicely with it. The biggest mistake most people make when going to the Dew Drop Inn is sticking to just hotdogs and hamburgers. They have the ABSOLUTE BEST crabmeat omelet poboy I have ever had, and I've had a lot of them. Their gumbo is world class,absolutely stuffed with shrimp and crabmeat. True Mobile gumbo, lacking the rubbery bits of sausage that profane the gumbo of lesser establishments. They also have a shrimp bisque that will totally knock your socks off. Their side vegetables are fresh, especially their collard greens. As a fan of traditional Southern vegetables, I was delighted to see that you can occasionally get rutabagas!! If you are going to wuss out and just have chicken fingers, you will be pleased to see that they are hand breaded. None of that Sysco pre-breaded junk! Their roast beef poboy is stuffed with meat that is hand sliced on the premises. I know because I've watched them slice it. Their shrimp and oyster poboys are divine. They use a light touch on their seafood and cook it to perfection. They must change their oil frequently because I've yet to get a greasy fried item there. Their pork chop dinners, hamburger steak plate and seafood platters are heavenly. Although they cost a bit more, you definitely get your money's worth and will not go home hungry! I haven't had the steak but if it's as good as everything else it should be fantastic. If you are going to the Dew Drop Inn to be transported by hot dogs and hamburgers, you will probably be disappointed. You just aren't GETTING IT. What's so great about their hot dogs and hamburgers is the nostalgic experience. The true treasures on the menu are, well, everything else. It really bothers me that people go there and then complain about the most pedestrian items available. ORDER SOMETHING ELSE!! Go in there sit down in a booth order a Sweet Tea or a Coke in a bottle and get ready to settle in, because your not moving after this meal. The hamburgers and seafood are very delicious, but where The Dew Drop stands alone is with its onion rings and Dew Drop Hot Dog. Do yourself a favor and go there as soon as possible. This place is a classic. As it was our first time visiting, my boyfriend and I decided to order several items and share. We enjoyed the shaved house dog. It was good, not great, but good. I liked the chili cheeseburger the best. It had just the right ratios. Very tasty. We had differing opinions of the gumbo. I though it was just okay, but the boyfriend really enjoyed it. A different review claimed shrimp in every bite. That is definitely true. Overall, good food and good service. read more

The oldest resturant continuously operating in Mobile - it has stayed around for a reason! The Dew Drop Inn still serves coca-cola in a glass bottle and prefers cash. The dew dog"everything" hot dog is a mobile staple- a lady I know required them at her 100th birthday party! Do! Dew Drop Inn is a Mobile institution. They supposedly served the first hot dogs in the region. They also call themselves Mobile's oldest restaurant. We had to try to the hot dog, but several other items on the menu appealed. The gumbo was good, but not great. The oyster loaf is served on a hot dog bun with ketchup and pickles. We asked for it to dressed with lettuce and tomato like a po' boy but they messed up and we got the ketchup and pickles which we didn't care for. Now to the hot dog. It was great. Each component was delicious. The sauerkraut had a wonderful tang, the chili had a good richness and the wiener itself (a disconcertingly bright red color) was so tasty. Dessert selection was uninspiring. There are other items on the menu. But when I go back to, I'll be getting the hot dog. read more

When eating at Dew Drop it is an all inclusive experience. It's the atmosphere, old Mobile, you can feel it in your bones. The regulars who have eaten their the entirety of their life. Dew Drop is my favorite restaurant in Mobile. It's simple, consistent, and just the best meal ever. I love the classic dew drop dog, wrapped to go (also part of the experience), a large onion ring, and a sprite no ice, and end it all with a banana pudding. Dew Drop is the best.
