Large Jerk Chicken
Zhen L.

I grew up eating Little Delicious's Jerk Chicken of southwest Philly, unfortunately that was too far now. I got a taste for jerk chicken one day bad, so I decided to give Dezzy's a try. Is definitely different from LD but still ok comparing to some of the other Jamaican restaurants in NE. I been going there since August of 2021, so far so good. No problems with staffs or food. My only complaint is every time I call, the phone line got statics, it is quite annoying. Other than that, everything else is good. Oh don't forget to try their desserts, it is delicious! Their desserts got my hub going back again and again lol!!

This Caribbean food restaurant is tucked away amongst a slew of other storefronts on FF ave. It's easy to miss if you're not paying attention. They do not have a dining area and are open for take out only. The cashier was very friendly and food was very good. I ordered the curry chicken platter which came with cabbage slaw and rice for around $12. The serving was huge and could be split into 2 meals. I also ordered the beef patty which had a nice kick and was also very tasty.

**Updated review** Unfortunately, the stereotypical Jamaican restaurant tendencies are true about this place too and I hate that because I love their food. However, this evening I called around 6:15 to order, they close at 8, drive 20/25 min to get there, only to be told they have no food despite me making a phone order to hold my food. I was told they took the order without checking their inventory and they don't have what I requested, another walked in after me and was told they have no food and their was a woman who was trying to order when I walked in who was told they didn't have what she asked for unless she wanted a small which meant they'd give her the scraps of the pan. Why are you open? Why are you taking phone orders if you're low on food? The whole point is to serve people food and if you have none then close your doors for the day and don't answer the phone. I'm disgusted. Obviously a hit or miss situation here and super unprofessional. They were polite in telling me they had no food but that's besides the point.

Mild beef patty, curried goat, plantains. Second two over rice with peas. (Careful, the rice is spicy. Or at least spicy to me.)

A friend and his son were going down here and offered to pick me up some food. I'm glad I took them up on it, because this meal was especially delightful! I got the curried goat, which was super, super tender; the plantains, which were TO DIE FOR; and a mildly spiced beef patty, which was simply perfection. My friend also let me try a little bit of his jerk chicken, and as good as my goat was, I think I would get the jerk chicken next time. It had a nice kick without being too hot for this white chick, plus it had a little sweetness to it. Both of these dishes have the choice of being served over rice with peas or white rice. The rice with peas has a kick to it for sure, so next time I would probably get white rice for myself. I definitely recommend getting as many extra plantains as you can afford, because they were sooooo good. Definitely also get a beef patty; you can get a spicy one if you're not a wimp like me. One caveat: there is no place to sit down and eat here; you have to get your food to go. Also, watch out for the PPA, because my friend got a ticket while he was picking up the food too.

Not the best neighborhood but it's not the worst either. The inside of this restaurant was nice and clean so that's a plus. Sadly, no one practiced social distancing but everyone (patrons and workers) wore masks. Well, the workers serving the food wore masks. Although the food looks ok, it was average at best. I had the jerk chicken, cabbage and Mac and cheese. My platter had more chicken bones than meat. The noodles in my Mac and cheese weren't seasoned. The thick glob of cheese on top was seasoned. The cabbage looked more like lettuce but it was surprisingly good. The oxtails were average. It's a "one and done" for me. Try it; you may enjoy it. I didn't!

Yes Dezzy's. Great portion size. I wasn't sure what to expect to be honest because they place isnt too big on the radar but i was in the neighborhood and decided I wanted to try it out. The spot is small, not a place to sit and eat but just for pick up. I assumed since it was 30 minutes before closing time, they wouldn't have any oxtail left but I called ahead and they sure did. I couldn't decide between cabbage and Mac and cheese so I paid extra and got both. The price was still good for the portion and size. The oxtail does have a little spice to it but for those who can't handle too much heat, it really isn't bad. I've eaten a lot of oxtail in my day and I'm not always a fan of seeing/chewing the green pepper, just a personal preference but you can definitely taste the flavor. Some people use just butter beans only, this also had carrots I believe. The Mac and Cheese tasted a little sweet so if you're not into it, maybe you can ask for taste before you choose that as your side but I didn't mind it at all. All in all, I'm glad to know there's a Jamaican spot not too far away that is good with flavor, portion and price.

Oxtail for $17 in 2022! God is good

I work opposite this place and it's my number one fave food source. Always hot and tasty and a good price. I'll be back weekly :)

Oxtails taste sweet and needed salt and the right base for the sauce..was lacking the appropriate flavor profile. The rice tasted like basmati which is cool for Indian cuisines but usually with dishes like Oxtails or Jerk Chicken I'd expect red beans and white grain rice cooked in coconut milk for the flavor profile. Mussels are delicious, they just don't give you a lot of them if you go during any of their prefixed menu offerings. Coconut shrimp are good. Carrot cake was one of the best I've tasted in a long time. Even if your not a fan of carrot cake I think you'll enjoy. There weren't big chunks of fruit or nuts inside. It was layered, fluffy, moist, cream cheese icing spot on, just really spot on. I could have ordered a cake to go and left the food. Drinks are pricey for what you get in return. Some of the drinks are watered down, like their "Sex on the Boat." They give it to you in this cute boat shaped dish with a straw with flashing lights (photo/vid attached) but there's a ton of ice and not much alcohol or flavor. You also have to wait for your entire party before ordering appetizers. Very strange to me. Most places will allow you to order drinks and appetizers while you wait for the rest of your party. Also be mindful that there's an 18% charge for credit card. If that bothers you be prepared to bring cash. They typically will only allow you to split the check two ways so for larger parties it's best to bring cash to avoid confusion when everyone is paying for themselves.

I'm happy to report, it was very very good! Some things to note: They take cash only. They have an ATM inside just in case, but make sure you have cash only you before you go. Make sure you pay attention when traveling to this establishment, as there are many intersections, one way streets, and streets that go from two to one lane. Also, there may be someone who will ask you to get them some food. Once we parked the car, we heard the reggae music coming from their front door. You can't miss it. The menu is on the wall, as well as being taped down to the counter by the order window. If they're out of something they will let you know before you order. When I went they were out of oxtail (a highly sought after dish in Caribbean cuisine). I had the jerk chicken with collard greens, white rice, and macaroni and cheese. My brother ordered the fried whiting, but I guess she didn't hear him correctly (trust me the music there is quite loud inside even though it's even louder outside), because he got the same thing I did. Now, we drove home, the car smelling amazing, and I forgot to take some photos for this review. But even so, I will definitely be back. The food was excellent, the prices were decent, and the service was fast. If you're looking for an adventure, check out Jamaican D's!

Unfortunately, the steak had quite a bit of fat around it, which isn't my favorite. When the food arrived, the rice was packed into a small cup, which made me think everything would be served hot. Unfortunately, none of the food was warm. Everything was room temperature and lacked flavor. Because it took a while for my meal to arrive, I got the impression that it may have been sitting out before being served. I ate it as it was because I didn't want to wait any longer. Taste-wise, the steak needed more seasoning, although the beans were good. Overall, the meal was average. After finishing, I asked for both a to-go box and the check. About 10 minutes later, the check arrived, but no box. One employee, William, really stood out. Whenever he stopped by, he was attentive, friendly, and on top of things. I appreciated his service and how proactive he was in checking on guests. Overall, the service had some delays, the food temperature was disappointing, and the flavors were underwhelming, not sure if I'll try this place again.
