Of course we had to try "Clinton's Pizza" while we were in Naples, and I really wish we hadn't. Service was quick, but the food was meh. To begin, the crust seemed under-cooked, as the whole middle of the pizza was extremely soft. My husband had the Diavola, and I the Margherita with Ham. Neither pizza really stood out. This was probably our 4th or 5th pizza stop over our 10-day trip, and the most over-rated pizza yet. Skip this stop and pick one of the many other shops to try. I did want to point out what another reviewer mentioned. The tables downstairs are not actually for dining guests. Guests use the tables upstairs. There is no signage about this, so if you sit down stairs, expect to be largely ignored. read more

One of the worst dining experiences I've ever had, anywhere! From start to finish, the server was beyond rude. I had to sit at a table with a dirty cloth, I was ignored almost the whole time, I had to wait a long time to order, my order took a long time to arrive (people who had got to the pizzeria and sat down after me were able to order and get their pizzas before me.), and I had to wait a long time to get the check. On top of this, the menu already stated that a 15% tip would be added to all checks, yet the waiter wanted me to "round up" the total so that he would get a little extra on top of the compulsory tip. All this for the worst service ever! The people at the other table kept looking over at my table the whole time I was there...they knew something was wrong too. For a quick pizza it took at least 1 hour and 30 mins, if not more. I ended up having to walk back to the hotel pretty late and got robbed of my phone. I seriously wonder if it was a coordinated effort between someone at the pizzeria and the phone snatcher. (If anyone experiences something similar, let me know.) I should mention, the pizza was okay, nothing to write home about. I ordered a pizza with artichoke, mozzarella, eggplant, mushrooms etc. There was one little artichoke on the whole thing, some parts of the pizza were missing mozzarella completely, and the mushrooms were canned and did not taste good. With service and pizza like I experienced, I would recommend looking for real Neopolitan pizza at Da Michele or Sorbillo's. For me, Di Matteo was so awful. This was our first stop in Naples, and the pizza did not disappoint! Great pizza, service and good wine fir tge price.

I don't mind paying high prices for food if i think it's worth it. unfortunately that was not the case for majority of my food and meals in Italy WITH THE EXCEPTION of Di Matteo! actually Di Matteo was cheap & amazing! my husband really enjoyed their fried goodies they sell at the front of the store, ridiculously cheap . i think he was able to get one for 0.20 euros. but i'd say their pizza had better value and i enjoyed it a lot more than i thought i would. we ordered the white pizza with sausage, arugula and we requested to add garlic. it was super tasty and fresh without dripping in oil. i believe it was less than 10 euros too. the gentleman working at the front was the only one who spoke english and he was pretty nice. read more

Are you kidding me?! Five euros for this deliciousness? I came here with a Napolitana friend and we each had a pizza and a beer, and the total was less than 15 euros. The pizza was nice and thin, perfectly charred, though slightly wet in the middle. Overall, it was a fun experience. Di Matteo also sells some great fried foods downstairs like arancini and croche', a fried macaroni and cheese item. I'm glad my trip to Naples involved walking around so much or I would've had to roll myself back to Rome. read more

"Di Matteo" is an authority in pizza. It's a pizzeria placed in a little building (it occupies 2 floors of it) in the historical city center of Naples. There you can find the typical Margherita pizza and a huge array of pizzas, plus some fried (typical) entrées. Prices are right for the food, which are very tasty, but the beverages list is really short, especially for beer. Another downside are the rooms, very crowded and small; the waiting time and the service. Since it's visited by students, Naples people and tourists, and since it also serves food on the street the waiting queue is very long. I had to wait for more than 1 hour. The service is poor: the waiters bring you the cutlery and you have to place them in order, they don't like to wait a lot for your order to arrive so, if it's your very first time there and you don't know what to chooce, you would probably end up writing your order on their block notes by yourself... Food is good, the other points are so so or very low. Update, 21st December: I went there for the second time at night, the weather was cold and waiting outside was just terrible! Anyway, once there I waited a bit for the waiter to arrive but food have been quickly prepared and "served". As it happened during my other experience, the service is still poor. Food is great as always, Margherita pizza with buffalo mozzarella is tasty, fried things aren't oily. I've tried its famous "pizza fritta" which is a fried pizza with ricotta cheese and meat stuffing and a "frittatina" which is basically a fried spaghetti ball with some veggie, meat and above all cheese. All is tasty and not so oily, however you can feel you stomach quite full right after. 3 stars just for the food. No, it isn't gluten-free nor vegan friendly. read more

Naples isn't like other places in Italy. In Rome or Venice, the cheapest food you can get are those goddamn tiny white bread sandwiches with the single slice of ham, mayo and mushrooms. In Naples, the cheapest food you can get is some of the best pizza you'll ever have on this earth. Joe's and Carmine's in NYC charge $30 for the same stuff you can get here for 5 euro. That said, we had a lot of pizza and in my opinion, Matteo's was the best. Tons of different kinds of pizza, made fresh, but mostly I gave it 5 stars because of the staff and the vibe. We went super late at night and we were the only ones, except for the massive staff. Everyone was really friendly and joked and laughed with us. We didn't feel like the typical asshole tourists, which was nice. 2 pizzas and two sodas for less than 20 bones? I'm into it. read more

Allora, I KNOW that pizza comes from Naples. I know this. I know that the standard against which all pizzas are measured is the "Vera Pizza Napoletana." I know that as Americans, we're used to a different breed of pizza altogether. That being said, we were disappointed by the pizzas we ate in Naples. The margherita, which ought to be the bread-and-butter of any pizzeria in this town, was a watery, soggy, sloppy mess topped with excellent mozzarella. The stuffed pizza with prosciutto cotto was much better, but the bianca (with broccoli rabe and crappy sausage) was abysmal. Now, before you fly into a rage and accuse me of not knowing my pizza from my foot, let me just implore you to take a deep breath and consider this: I live in San Francisco. Yes, that makes me a food snob. But it also makes me home to Tony's North Beach Pizza, which actually won the "Best Pizza Margherita" at the World Pizza Cup in Naples, Italy in 2007. The furnishings are spartan. The only things on the walls are maybe a few pictures and a bunch of awards they've won for pizza. If you are lucky enough to have to wait for a table to open up, you should sample some of the tasty fried bits out front, as you watch the master pizzaiolo make pizzas. The sliced eggplant ("melanzane") was pretty damn good. The pizzas are large and in charge. The crust is perfect. My only complaint about di Matteo's is perhaps they are TOO good. My last time in Naples I ate at di Matteo's 3 times. Every time I wanted pizza, it was di Matteo's. There are a lot of other excellent--and famous--pizzerias in Naples, like da Michele's and Sorbillo's, just to name two in the relative same area, but I found myself returning to di Matteo's. Really great little place that is bustling business in Naples. We went on a suggestion that this was the best place in the world...and friends had already gone to another shop and were not super impressed. Helps to have a bit of Italian under your belts but definitely not required. You might miss this place as the doorway is tiny and guarded by a doorman taking orders for take away or reservations. We were able to get a table in five minutes as we knew from other helpful posts that there were tables inside. The doorway leads right through the kitchen...and you can see the cooks working away. Once space opened we were whisked to our table. Don't expect Michelin service...these guys are efficient but can take a few minutes to get their attention. So many pizzas...so hard to choose. We got a Margarita and Margarita with pepperoni. Crust was light and crisp on the bottom...slight char on edges. divine. I loved the tomato base sauce and cheese. heaven. I gave four...as the pizza place in Rome that we went to earlier had the better crust..thinner and crispier crust. But trust me...this place beats anything back home. Price is such a welcome change. We had three pizzas and drinks for under 7 Eros per person. Hands down best value for money. Would recommend this place to anyone in Naples. read more

If you're new to Napolitano pizza it's definitely worth spending some time watching them make the pizza, use the oven, etc. fun experience! Bottom line is you can't go wrong here. This was my favorite pizza I had in my entire two weeks around Italy!!! Two nights later we ate at another place highly reviewed and recommended.... Preferred this for sure, although both amazing! Here I had the pesto one, my husband the sausage and broccoli, my in-laws got a veggie one with capers, olives - the works. We inhalled everything!!! Holy Moly... The flavours!! Best tasting crust I've ever had. Sublime sauce. I had the margherita con buffala and, frankly, the cheese was rubbery within seconds of cooling in front of me; maybe that's what I get for ordering fancy, when my rule was to keep it strictly simple. But the taste was so good on all the ingredients that this isn't the reason for only 4 stars. It was just too damned wet. Really detracts from enjoying the middle. No way to eat it by hand; fork and knife job... again. Maybe that's just the deal with the real deal, but I like me some crispy crust! I changed this before posting. Quick and tasty pizza! In my opinion not enough salt and a bit salty on the salami, but overall great and nice service. Apparently bill Clinton went here as well, he is on the cover of the menu! "Napoli is a pit," was all my friend said. But I'm a pizzaiolo, and was going to be in Italy anyway, so we added it to the list of destinations. Our apartment was in an area that looks like an ungentrified, pre-Guilliani Brooklyn would look like 200 years after its heyday. But our landlord recommended Di Matteo. And it was good. Not good like Pizzeria Bianco in Phoenix, but have a seat and wait for it, some of the tastiest pizza you'll ever eat good. We ate pizza every day we were in Naples, and most days we were in Italy. Even though Napoli IS a pit, if you go there get a pizza at Di Matteo. And be prepared to wait to have your order taken, get your food, get the check, and to pay. It's worth it. read more

I would give negative stars if I could. I was very excited to check out this place because of the Yelp reviews. However, after coming away from it, I can only write a sombre review. My boyfriend and I did not get to try the pizza here because they would not serve us. We waited for nearly half an hour in a disorderly mob of a line, only to get to the front and be repeatedly ignored. There was one man working behind the takeout / takeaway counter, who made eye contact with us, clearly heard our order, and then looked away and took the orders of people behind us, multiple times. There was another man standing at the door who spoke English and who managed the line for table service. At one point I asked him whether the line we were waiting in was for the pizza, just to confirm, and he said pizza was table service only, which I knew was a lie. I pointed out to him that I just saw other people successfully order pizza at the counter and walk away with their pizza in boxes. He waved his hand dismissively and pointed back at the line I was waiting in, as if he suddenly did not know how to speak anymore. In the end we gave up and went to a another delicious pizzeria. Given that most people who read Yelp reviews are from the US like myself, I will assume the first-person and say, where WE come from, this experience would be an obvious act of discrimination. Whether it was because we are American, or Asian, or Asian American, or tourists in general, I will never know, but what we experienced was a level of overt prejudice that no one should ever have to know. Naples is famous for pizza and there are many places to have an amazing meal. Please go support a different pizzeria that actually treats potential customers with humanity, civility and equality. read more

I didn't find their pizza remotely as good as the reviews talk about...we got the fried pizza and a tuna pizza and I wasn't thrilled about either of them. Yet another good pizza spot in Naples. They have the menu in English which seems to be a rarity in Naples. I took a margherita con pepperoni and my boyfriend had the margherita con funghi, both were delicious. The only let down was the red wine which wasn't great and was served cold. I advise arriving early as we stopped by just before 12 and by the time we left an hour later there was a large crowd waiting outside. Yelp says they are closed on Sunday but we went anyway and it was open. read more

The King. My girlfriend and I tried Neopolitan pizza at three different establishments, Di Matteo being one of them. Di Matteo reigns supreme. The San Marzano tomato sauce bursts with richness and earthy flavor, the mozzarella exudes its milk, and the pizza is topped with just the right amount of olive oil and basil. Half of the adventure is ordering, in which you have to muscle your way to the front of the line, order inside, watch the pizzaiolo forge your future meal in the heart of a wood-fired oven, hand cash over, and have a freshly baked pizza land square in your arms. The dough was so thin you could cut paper on it (gentle hyerbole, but you get the point). No, but honestly: it was the thinnest and finest dough of any pizza on our trip. Just got back from a pizza tour of Naples with my wife. We hit 5 spots and tried the margherita at all of the places. We hit Di Matteo twice. Once for dine in and once for take out for a 2nd lunch/early dinner. Of the 5 spots we hit, this would probably rank 3rd. By far better than anything in the States but in Naples the competition is stiff. Di Matteo is also famous for their fried food. The front of the store has a giant display of many fried delicacies and then mini margherita pizzas to-go that only cost like 2 euros. That is crazy. $3 for an awesome pizza? In Rome you pay way more for crappy foccacia pizza. I'd come back on a future visit for sure. read more

We came here after reading some reviews where they won over Da Michele. We had gone to Da Michele for lunch and came here for dinner. We ordered their pizza fritta, a margarita, and an arancino. The arancino rosso was decent. It's a fried ball of rice stuffed with cheese and pork I believe. The cheese on the margarita was less chewy than that of Da Michele and the char wasn't as good. The crust and dough of Da Michele's is much better. We were joy big fans of the fried pizza which was mostly filled with a mild tasting cheese. Overall we were quite disappointed and regretted missing an opportunity to dine at Da Michele again. read more

I wouldn't get into the argument of which of the Napoli pizzerias are the more authentic etc. They all are. Indeed, if you take this only as a gastonomic destination, you are sort of missing the point. Come late in the night, maybe even better alone and get lost riding a moped in the dark alleys first. Don't limit your culinary adventure just to the marginal palate. Di Matteo has the best pizza for those who live in the city.
