I was looking for a sturdy bike for my son. He's hard on stuff. We went Diamond Cycle to check out the Norco line of mountain bikes, and talked to Craig about getting a bike that could ride bike park and rough trails. We ended up getting a Norco Range and I've been totally impressed on how well the bike was built and has held up. The service was excellent and the selection of gear was awesome. I'm an honest guy. I'm fair and I think I'm smart enough to understand the current course of events. It has taken me over 2 weeks to gain my sense of civility before posting this review. While I believe Craig and his crew have a great cycle shop, I am convinced they are well beyond their means during these past few months of COVID experience. So while I'm angry and bitter about my experience, I'll garnish it with some salt, but I need to explain so other potential buyers are aware. My wife and I were convinced that we should spend our recent government COVID stimulus check at or on (a) local business(es). We assessed our needs and carefully chose Diamond to fulfill my wife's long time desire for a bike. In her case, an electric iZip bike so she can join me biking with her bad knees. I made the inquiry IN PERSON in May 2020, after waiting in a very, very long line at the rear of the store with a blazing sun. During my very short conversation with an associate when my time came, I was instructed to make my new purchase online at their website. Had they ever answered their telephone (which, btw, was never answered for WEEKS due to the high volume of inquiries), I would have saved time. This was Monday. So off I went home to make my purchase. When I went online the instructions were clear! "Not available online - please come to the store to order." Was I livid? Yup. But I waited until the next day as I was too angry to return. Next day, Tuesday, I met the same long line and finally reached Craig, told him about the situation. He did not seem to care, only to sell the bike. Okay, he's tired and I understand that. I paid in full for the bike on the spot and was told "I need that box your bike came in, so I'll be getting to it this week!", Craig stated. Days passed. Weeks passed. I never heard anything and my emails to Craig from his business card went unanswered. His telephone always "off the hook" (busy). Three-weeks later I decided, "enough is enough" - let me go back to ask (politely, always politely) when I'd be getting my wife's bike. After standing in "the same long, hot line" for nearly 45-minutes again, a very lovely lady took down my information, approached Craig and he said, "I just didn't get to it." I was really disappointed. "I promises, this week." The young lady took my information and said she'd place it in a predominant space for Craig to act quickly. Another week passes. I go back because the phone is off the hook. Same long line. "Oh, man, I'm sorry, I just forgot. I'll call you tomorrow!" And "tomorrow" never came. Later that week, I returned and, while still being polite, I was a bit more forceful in my request. He acknowledged I'd been there several times, always enduring a long line of no less than 40-minutes each time. So he said, I'll get it right now while you wait. I told him I'd rather have my wife here so you can explain the bike to her. He agreed, and off I went to get her. That took a total of 30-40 minutes to return. I figured, the bike should be ready. WE STOOD IN LINE AGAIN IN VERY HOT WEATHER to only see the bike still in a box!!!!!!! I cannot tell you how many times I had to grit my teeth and bite my tongue. During this 2-hour wait outside, he had people constantly interrupt him with questions about helmets, repairs, advice, etc. Now, I understand he's in a business to make money. HE HAD LITTLE TO NO BIKES LEFT and repairs were estimated for several weeks. I have no idea what fiscal situation he is/was in, but I'm sure with a virtually empty store, this unanticipated boost to the business was not ill received!! I very much WANTED to say, will you please stop addressing everyone and put my damn bike together so I can get my wife out of the hot car and up here for instruction and adjustment. But I bit my tongue and let it take it's 2-hour course. Finally! The bike was assembled. I got my serial number and now we could get on to some guidance on how to utilize this new purchase and adjust it. Well, this was where I nearly lost it!! Craig adjusted the seat, told her to take a ride around the parking lot. She had some concerns about the seat height which he adjusted and the handlebar height that he said, "well, I like it that way" and my wife looked at me and I at her and he basically brushed us off to help the growing long line of customers. WE GOT NO INSTRUCTIONS ON HOW TO USE THE BIKE!!!!! Did he expect us to know everything about it? My wife hadn't had a bike in years and the first bike "with gears" and her first "electric" bike. So we left completely deflated and yearning for an explanation of how to use the power source. There were other things that didn't feel right, but there's no point addressing them. I think I've civically explained what happened to use with enough for the reader to make a conclusion on the service Craig and Diamond Cycle can provide. I'm not happy. I truly am not. I'm not "complaining" - but I am sharing. We spent over $1700. Just not fair. read more

Good bike shop. Nice enough staff. Not sure if it was a one off but I did not have an amazing experience. I brought a bike to them for a build during a busy time. They accommodated me with building it in two days. Charged me a little extra than they quoted me over the phone, which I was okay with however they didn't mention it at check out. I noticed it later on my receipt. I would have preferred transparency with the extra charge. I come back one day later to pick up and after getting home with my bike I noticed they did not give me the tools the bike comes (or the owners manual which is obviously small potatoes but I like to keep them). I called back and I returned to pick up the tools but they did not have the owner's manual. (I did bring the bike to them brand new in the box so perhaps they just placed it aside or threw it out). My husband had the same bike built at another shop in town a few days prior and we had a better experience. read more

Vince at Diamond Cycle Montclair has been excellent from day one when this absolute novice who hasn't biked in more than a decade, decided to buy a bike amidst the COVID quarantine. I hadn't ridden a Bike in many years. I remember getting my first bike from Diamond in 1974. I decided to dust off my Schwinn and ride again. The gears needed adjusting so I headed up to Montclair not knowing if Diamond was even still there. To my surprise it is there and thriving. I was met by a gentleman who directed me to the back of the shop. I watched a gentleman quickly and efficiently fix my bike. Decent pricing and very well stocked with everything bicycle. I purchased a Cannondale Quick Neo from Diamond Cycle on January 30, 2018 and still haven't received the correct bike and its associated parts over two months later. They first shipped me a ladies' version and then a men's version that was received with broken and damaged parts that still haven't been replaced. Their failure to communicate honestly and completely is the first time in my 74 years' of living that I have experienced such poor performance from anyone. I couldn't have imagined a better experience! I originally called multiple bicycle shops asking about fitting for a fat tire bicycle, I'm 4'11. No one was very helpful on the phone and I was hesitant to travel if I wasn't sure I'd find something. I called Diamond Cycle and spoke to Chris on the phone. I had such a good feeling about visiting because he was giving me so much useful information. I decided to come in the same day! I had originally wanted a 3" tire mountain bike but due to my height, it was impossible to find. Chris went above and beyond to find me a very close match! A plus size tire mountain bike, JR size, but it was perfect! He had the bike assembled and ready for me to pick up in just a few days and even assembled a bike rack on my car! He helped me choose a MIPS bicycle helmet and even recommended trails for a beginner to try. I am ecstatic with my purchase. Unfortunately: discourteous. I understand the new business hours and policy in light of Covid precautions, but upon arriving at the back of the store for service at 12:40 -- store allegedly opened at 12:00 --- there was a line of 7 socially-distanced patrons and no Diamond Cycle staff in sight. So we wait. And we wait. A staff member eventually emerges from the store to check on a palette, and ignores the patient line that has queued up. Almost 1:00 (an hour after store was supposed to open) still waiting for the first person in line to receive service. How about the staff greets the waiting line of customers? Say something friendly like, I'll be with you in a moment? So I left. A business that does not respect its customers (let alone acknowledge a waiting line of customers) doesn't get my business. read more

I recently paid a brief visit to Diamond Cycle Center to purchase a lock for the bike I received as a birthday gift. I sauntered in wearing a cleavage-bearing sundress and a ditzy summer glow but was nevertheless tended to immediately. I informed the salesman of my wish to purchase a cheap lock, and he-- rather than attempting to upsell-- simply provided me with a totally justifiable disclaimer about cheap locks, and asked me where, when, and how long I'd need to secure my bike, in the interest of making an appropriate sale. In the end he presented me with a $30 combination model, desmonstrating how to set, open, and close the lock. When I fumbled in my attempt to remember the last four digits of my phone number, he made me come up with a more readily recalled set of four digits before proceeding to set the combo. Finally, he insisted that I set, open, and close the thing myself-- just to be sure. If this is their standard level of customer service (and it probably is, as they've been at this since 1912), buying a bike from Diamond Cycle is probably a pretty rockin' experience. They carry Cannondale, Giant, Haro, Diamondback, and other quality brands, but also serve those who have to Ride or Die on a budget with a nice selection of used bikes. Thanks Diamond Cycle! I called over 8 different bike shops in order to find my Giant Dash 3 and they had it in stock! I called around 1030AM, told them what I wanted, said they had it and started building it for me. I arrived at 1PM from Brooklyn (Park Slope) and I'm already back home with my bike, built and fitted. It's 230PM :) Great service and they took the time to show me a few things about my new bike. Very nice shop! I'll be back for my tune-up. Finally a place that has good customer service! My wife and I were interested in buying a couple of Brompton folding bikes. Brompton's are usually ordered be-spoke and as there are many choices in configuration, I was looking for dealer who could assist in the ordering process as well as the post purchase maintenance. I found Diamond Cycle on Brompton's list of authorized dealers and after speaking with Craig who is a Brompton expert and rider, we decided to order the bikes and that this was the shop we wanted to deal with. Craig let us test ride several times to be sure we made the right choice in model. In the whole process there was never any sales pressure and Craig was great about making several changes after the initial order was put through. On picking up the bikes they were tuned and set up and the staff there made sure that we understood how to properly fold and unfold the bikes. After riding the bike a couple of times I found that I needed a higher seat post and again Craig was cool with making any changes needed. The shop is a full service well stocked bike store that has been there for around 100 years. If you're looking for a Brompton I would highly recommend them I'm very happy with my choice of both bike and bike shop. read more

Great Experience. I went to a total of five bicycle shops in effort to purchase a hybrid bicycle for my girlfriend. My budget was $400 but it quickly escalated into $600, you get what you pay for. All the shops were helpful and informative but two things made Diamond Cycle Center the place for me: 1) the bike I was looking for was $50 cheaper. 2) the sales person let us ride the bikes without hassle or too much pressure. I think at first i was intimidated by this store because it looked like a pro bike store which it is and i was just looking for a kids bike. They have a nice small collection. When purchasing they don't pressure you or give you a heavy sales pitch. Everyone in there is always very busy giving you freedom to browse. Two years in a row we reserve rentals to find that they do not have them ready for us. It's awful we made reservations, put a deposit down and yet they don't follow through. I would not even recommend this place as a last resort option at all to anyone. I will never step foot and in this poorly ran establishment again. So this is a follow-up post to my experience at the Montclair Bikery looking for a balance bike for my youngest son--yikes! When I left Montclair Bikery to scour craigslist or freecycle for a balance bike I noticed Diamond Cycles tucked off Bloomfield Ave--I don't think I've ever seen it before. It's a little tough parking on the street (you know how Bloomfield Ave is--not as bad up in Montclair, but it's double parked the closer you get to Newark). I figured I'd give them a shot, since I prefer buying locally and supporting the shops. It's not like the shop was bustling with activity--I actually couldn't tell who the staff were and who the customers were--everyone seemed to be minding their own business and no one seemed to be being helped. After one wrong attempt asking someone if they worked there (they didn't) I snagged a "salesperson". I think they picked the wrong group of people to try and sell things (or maybe a balance bike just isn't worth their time), but it seemed from his attitude that I was wasting his time just telling him what I needed. I was so embarrassed that I wanted to walk out. He finally took me over to the computer and answered a few phone calls while he looked up the balance bikes. You'd think I'd asked him to move the world when I asked about color variations! Not my best experience at a bike shop--it made me appreciate my experience at the Bikery more--and I don't know if I'll be going back. I really prefer to be treated like a customer, not a nuisance even if I am just buying something small. read more

But on trying to make a sale for a new mountain bike (which was logical) one of the staff (not Vinny or Chris) was a little (OK, a lot) condescending and then tried to sell me a bike $100 more than their advertised price and was trying to make me think he was doing me a favor as he was willing to come down $50. So $50 more than their advertised price. And still $100 more than the same model in a frame one size smaller (confused? Yeah, buying a bike should not be confusing). I'm really trying to show my support for local store owners, but I'm not an idiot.
