A haunted hill Diamond Hill State Park is a beautiful place with several athletic fields, a band shell overlooking a pond and numerous picnic areas. It also has several rather short but very steep hiking trails. The entire length of hiking trails is probably only about a mile of so but some are extremely steep. This whole hill seems to be made of lumps of quartz so getting up the steep hill can be a bit of a challenge, especially when the ground is wet or frozen. If seems you go two steps back for every step forward trying to walk on those rocks. Nice views on the summit and of course all the cool rocks laying around everywhere are fascinating to look at. However if you look closely you will notice other, less natural items. Huge cement blocks and metal poles are scattered about. After a little rumination it becomes obvious that this was once a ski area. After talking to several folks in the area I found out that this was indeed a ski area from 1939 to 1981. It was small but was noted for it's extremely steep and rocky hills. Then needed quite a bit of snow to cover all the rocks and tended to have a lot of accidents because of the steep and narrow slopes. These factors combined for the demise of the skiing. I also discovered that this hill is considered haunted by many in the area. Several battles and massacres between native americans and early settlers occurred here and strange screams and apparitions can occasionally be seen on the hill on certain nights. Of course the fact that this is a popular drinking spot for the local youth might explain some of the noises and sights but every October they set up tents and displays have a haunted hill tour at the park. They do their best to scare the hell out of people. Certainly not the longest or best hiking in the area but it is cool trying to scramble up the hills and fun to look at all the cool rocks and artifacts left over from the skiing days. Mayhaps if you are there are the right time, on the right day, you just might even see a ghost.

    From the picnic area.

Beautiful but could be so, so much more! The amphitheater could host movies and concerts-it would be so amazing! Too bad it's fallen a bit.

Pond in the park over taken with slime and trash this out door space would be great for summer concerts if it was fixed up some

Walking around this park needs some TLC ....broken benches and just run down looking...to bad this could be a really nice park if the fixed it up some

The start of the way up, very rocky

The park has tons of athletic fields, but the hiking trails are disappointing. There are much better places in RI for a hike/run.

We have done it both ways, mostly by bike. It is a beautiful green space that goes along rivers and small waterfalls, just lovely. With over 24 miles already constructed, the vision is for it to extend 48 miles from downtown Worcester, MA, to India Point Park in Providence, RI. From there, it connects with the existing East Bay Bike Path and continues to Bristol, RI, for additional 14.5 miles. When completed, the Blackstone River Bikeway will serve as an alternate mode of transportation for commuters as well as the region's premier recreational resource, connecting New England's second and third largest cities.

The bikeway (approx. 20 miles) runs from Woonsocket, through Cumberland into Lincoln along the Blackstone River through lots of greenery and passing by bridges, dams, old mill buildings and historic sites. Of course, there are plenty of ways to do shorter rides/runs/walks. My riding buddies and I especially enjoy getting on at Albion Street in Cumberland (limited parking though!) and riding towards Ashton Mill (Cumberland) and into Lincoln for either a 10- or 12-mile spin, depending on where we decide to turn back. We also like the stretch from Woonsocket to Albion (about 9 miles back and forth) that starts out by taking us by sunny soccer fields in The River's Edge Recreation area. No matter where you get on, the terrain is mainly flat and it's easy to keep a steady pace.Be on the lookout for turtles sunning themselves on fallen trees in the river as well as occasional deer. And expect plenty of friendly waves and nods from walkers, runners and bikers on your journey. The Lincoln and Woonsocket ends offer ample parking.

It is a calming trail, that is quite woodsy and you will hear many birds including woodpeckers ! You will definitely need to keep your eye on the trail, as there are a lot of rocks and tree roots on the trail that could easily twist an ankle or worse ! There are some inclines and downgrades on this trail, there Is one treacherous section before you get to the pond, that is a steep downgrade full of rocks ! The pond does offer some nice views and the trail is easy to follow. This trail is evaluated as a beginner's trail but there are some areas that in my opinion are intermediate in difficulty. A person should be in average physical condition, to do this trail. I am almost 75 years old, in average physical condition and was able to complete this trail. Overall this is a pretty good trail!
