We bought a mobile home in Clayton Palms in Clayton, CA. We took possession of it July 1, 2024. Horizon Manufactured Homes was the selling dealer who took our money. The manufacturer is Clayton Homes in Perris, CA.
Apparently it is common for a mobile home, even a brand new one, to have MINOR problems so the buyer has 30 days to identify cosmetic problems and 1 year for functional problems.
The person responsible for arranging for contractors to make repairs is Veronica Camacho, Customer Care Advocate. Note that it is in her job title to advocate for us, the customers.
To summarize, Ms. Camacho sent one Johnny Gonzalez, who by his own statement is not a licensed contractor to fix the items on our list. He fixed some of the items and told us he would return with parts he needed to fix the other items.
After that, Mr. Gonzalez made several appointments with us and then cancelled or re-scheduled them or did not show up at The last time he came here was December 30, 2024. Again, he fixed nothing.
So this has been going on for 6 months. We requested that Ms. Camacho send us another contractor since Mr. Gonzalez was not able to fix the items on the list. At some point Ms. Camacho told me that the factory, Clayton Homes, has to fix some things and that takes 4-6 weeks.
Ms. Camacho told us by email, more than once, that there are no other contractors who are willing to come to Clayton, CA because it is so far away. This is obviously not true, the bigger cities of Concord, Brentwood and Antioch are all 15-30 minutes away. Being bigger cities than Clayton, Concord, Brentwood and Antioch have many, many contractors.
Now we are up to 8 months with no resolution. Ms. Camacho told me she would forward me all the emails that show she was trying to reach the factory and they were not responding. She also told me contacted the President of that company and he would contact me.
I have received no forwarded emails and no call from the President of Clayton Homes.
One of the original problems was the shower in the master bedroom was not installed properly and it leaks. This was a minor problem that could have been fixed relatively easily. Now we have water damage that can cause mildew and once mildew gets into the walls it will get into the walls of the whole house and ruin it.
I finally got in contact with Ross from Clayton Homes. Ross promptly answered my first phone call. He had one Oscar Valeriano come out. It is not clear to me whether Oscar is a licensed contractor or his father is the contractor, they have the same name.
This shows that Ms. Camacho did not tell the truth when she told me no other contractors would come to Clayton. It is possible that Ms. Camacho did not know of any other contractors, but that seems unlikely, since there are reviews of her company, including her name, here on Yelp going back to 2019. So she either somehow did not know any other contractors even though she has worked in this field for at least 6 years, or she did not tell me the truth.
Today I spoke to Ms. Camacho and her supervisor, Brian Ralls. Mr. Ralls told me the other day they were going to get a contractor to fix these problems. Today he was on the phone for about a minute and then left me on the phone with Ms. Camacho. They noted that I am working with Ross from Clayton Homes, the manufacturer.
So back to getting a contractor out here to fix the problems. Mr. Valeriano, whom the manufacturer Clayton Homes sent, came out in 2 days and attempted to fix the kitchen sink and the bathroom. He pointed out that a contractor was supposed to go under the house and spray foam into the underside of the shower when it was built, which they had not done. That explained why stepping into the shower pushed the floor down. So he went to the hardware store, bought the foam, went under the house and sprayed it, which fixed the problem of stepping into the shower pushing the floor down. It turns out that the "settlement contractor," who sets the halves of the mobile home on their supports, may not have installed the entire home correctly.
Unfortunately that is not the end of the story. The shower leaked less than before but it still leaks from both sides. I texted Mr. Valeriano pictures of the gap between the shower door and the seal on the wall and told him the problem was still there. Also, he supposedly fixed the sink, but it still leaks. We now have standing water in the shower and water damage in both bathrooms.
All of this is giving my wife and me both anxiety and we are both angry. Small problems have turned into a big problem. Horizon and Clayton Homes seem to be trying to run out the clock on the one-year home warranty so they can say the problems are out of warranty. We are not going to let this happen.
We have been way too patient with this.
Our next phone calls are to the Better Business Bureau and to a lawyer.
