But when Diamond Jim's is rated on its own merit, it's just an average bar and average food, nothing really that special, nothing really that wrong. My God this was an amazing little "Diamond" to find in Midland. I never even knew it existed!! After a really bad experience at local dive, it was refreshing to happen along Diamond Jim's! I did not notice a sign at all to indicate what the place was even called which I think might not be a good thing. The bartender inside was very happy to allow us to review a menu and I figured what the heck, they have Black Bean Burgers I might as well try it. Since the weather was beautiful we decided to eat outside, I ordered the Black Bean Burger which was only about $5.00 ( I really was not expecting much) and the last minute I changed my mind from fries to Onion Rings. Our server/bartender at the last moment informed me that I made a very good choice. I kind of doubted her because the city I am from in South West Michigan I always thought had the best Onion Rings around. To my surprise when my plate arrived OMG the burger was HUGE!! The onion rings looked so amazing I thought I would take a pic of my plate. As I am taking a pic I guess inside the manager had told her cook that she herself makes the best onion rings....these were the ones that he made and as she walked out of the kitchen she was able to witness me taking a pic of my plate LOL!! She came out to tell me about the conversation with her cook....hahaha, I am not sure how hers are, but his were AMAZING!! We ended up having to get boxes because there was so much food and very reasonably priced! Went here on a Monday to try out the lunch buffet and wings. The bar was a little run down but had a good selection of beers. I tried to make a panini using their panini maker they had out for the sandwich buffet but sadly it didn't heat up properly and did not work. The soups were not bad I liked the beef barely had a nice spice to it. The service was great and I wouldn't mind coming back here again for a cocktail or beer sometime. Diamond Jim's is fairly well known in the tri-city area for being a bar, but one bite of their delicious food and you'll quickly realize there's a lot more going on. While they were always a personal favorite for reasonable drink prices and excellent service, I had been there a number of times before I tried the food. I was missing out! The Kentucky Hot Brown is absolutely amazing, and their burgers are far from typical for a bar. Stop in on Mondays and you can grab a burger for just $3!! Summary: Unfortunate event at the place with the owner left me and my party of 5 with a very bitter taste from the place. Will not be returning. Drinks without prices on the menu are tricky to begin with, but when a $2.00 up charge results in the owner arguing with three people, I was left with the feeling that the owner is more concerned with his $2.00 profit and his ego intact than the experience the customer has at his establishment. I've enjoyed two burgers at this place, and several drinks in the past. But now, I can't even drive by without feeling that the owner, with his many "years of experience", as he was fond of repeating to us for much of our "discussion", hasn't a clue on a positive experience in giving customer service. It's a shame, because my group had just started venturing out to new places in town, and this was our second trip and was looking like a good hang out! I won't be supporting this establishment anymore based on the divisive and dismissive communication style, to myself, my wife and our other female friends. My boyfriend and I managed to squeeze in on a lunch break and the place was pretty busy. A few people were hovering over the lunch buffet but I heard good things about their burgers so I went with a Mushroom Swiss ($6.50). Despite the crowd, our orders came up quickly. Even though I asked our server to hold the chips, it came with them anyway. But in the end I was happy to put them in my burger. The bread was not the usual sesame bun but more like a loose ciabatta. so I'm going on vacation can I took off an extra day just to look for some good food and boy am I glad I did. This place has some of the best burgers around! I got one with no bun and no ketchup, but added there delicious Ranch and I cannot believe how good all the taste in one big combo were! I love the atmosphere in here not overly loud and not too quiet either which I don't like. I would definitely recommend this place,.especially when you bring a date! The food was really good! You may have thought I didn't notice the celery salt on the French fries but I diiiid. It was a nice touch. The slaw burger is a awesome. Not complex but wonderful in it's availability. The service could use an upgrade though...I don't know if Jade is used to people taking forever to make choices/organize payment but the lag was a little much. Came back to Midland for a visit this Thanksgiving and tried this place for the first time. While there weren't many people there around lunch time, I can imagine the place filling up in the evenings. Prices were cheap and the food was good. I can only vouch for the burgers. If you are in the mood for a hearty savory burger, this is place place to go! Probably not much on the healthy side. Came in restaurant at 7:30 pm, tail end of dinner time rush, all tables full, wait staff did not acknowledge us, once seated, both general manager (at bar) and waitress ignored us, took 10 minutes to ask for drinks, another 15 to be asked food order. Both bartender (G.M) and waitress walked by several times ignoring us, tables were empting out. This is second time for bad service. This is a regular destination of mine... a great mix of great and affordable drinks, simple and good food, and attentive service. The owners are there most evenings I am, and the hands-on attention shows. They have live music a couple nights a week, usually on the weekends, featuring local bands. My friend Dave Kellan from NYC always plays there when he makes it back to Midland. They have outdoor dining at four tables on Main St which is open throughout the summer, which is nice. Lastly, they have an excellent IPA on draft, Founders, that I highly recommend to anyone looking for a beer with bite. Cheers! read more
