MOST IMPORTANTLY, we got NO receipt!! Hubby had to sign a paper stating it was OK to charge for "rest" of service once the guy returned to the office, and yep, no copy of that paper either. I reached out to several companies that were highly-rated on Yelp. Only one company returned my voicemail -- a month later. Someone came by to give an estimate and promised to send it the next day, but I never heard from them. When reached out after a week , they told me it would cost $510 to remove the downspout, plug the hole in the gutter, and redirect that gutter to another downspout. I was willing to move forward with this work, but I was really discouraged by their lack of communication. I thought there had to be at least one company with good reviews who would respond in a timely way, so I decided to check the companies advertising to us by mail. Of those, only one company had consistently positive reviews online -- J.R. England. My experiences working with J.R. England could not have been more different than the negative and confusing interactions I had or read about with other companies. Kate and Ryan are a husband and wife team. Kate responded to me in under an hour, visited our home the next morning, and completed a series of estimates for me before the end of business hours that day. I was impressed by her responsiveness, knowledge, generosity, and demeanor. Similarly, Ryan completed the repair a day after I approved the estimate, and he was friendly and forthcoming with his expertise -- never intimidating, condescending, or pushy. On top of all that, the repair turned out great, and unlike the previous company, he was willing to install an all new gutter, without any need to plug a hole, for just $350! I was able to schedule an estimate quickly and get someone out to help us address our main issue which was our kitchen not venting correctly, in addition to a fireplace that we would soon need because of the cold Detroit winter. As a new homeowner, we did want to make sure that the fireplaces were in good working condition before we actually started using them so we requested a estimate on what the service and maintenance could potentially be for the fireplaces that we had in our house and any recommendations that they would have. The process was very straightforward. They easily walked us through the quote and what was needed and why, in addition to what the current condition of the fireplace was in to what would need to be done and how it would fix the problem as well as what comes after the service what could be expected what they would be able to help us with should we come across any hiccups after the fireplace maintenance and what warranties came with the products that we purchased. We purchased dampers some gas fire logs, and had our fireplaces updated so that we could use them last winter. From there coming this winter, we assumed that we would have to have the fireplaces serviced again because it was a new year, though we only had a handful of fires in the living room fireplace they scheduled the appointment. They were prompt and scheduling, as well as coming out for service and transparent enough to say we haven't used our fireplace enough to fully warrant a cleaning. This was refreshing to see this type of honesty from a contractor. Then we ended up having an issue with the smoke coming into our house on our serviced fireplace. They were able to address solve an analyze, the reasons why the smoke was coming in to our living room, though everything looked up-to-date and ready to go. It was next level problem-solving skills that they would rarely run across because of the unique fireplace that we had in our Historic house. Should I move my down spouts or keep them where they are? Decision-decisions. One quote was $3300 for 5 in. with no leaf filters. The other two were both $2200 for the same service. I decided to go with what I currently have - 5 in. gutters with no leaf filter. After two weeks of thought, I hired Go Gutters. They were more professional with their quote and provided a sense if expediency. The scheduling was prompt - only three days after I accepted their quote. They arrived at the time agreed and began the work. I would periodically step outside and ask questions and they were more than happy to answer. They took a one hour break only 1.5 hours after arrival, which caused concern because I needed to leave my home at a certain time. Needless to say, the work was finished timely. However there were a few disappointments. They left debris from my gutters on the roof, on my lawn, and in my flower bed. They also left small parts of the gutter material on my property.
