I have lived here for a couple years, and when a friend heard that i had never been to Dibella's, I felt like i was jeopardizing our friendship. I guess i was just not in a rush to go to a sandwich place in a strip mall. As a matter of fact, it had never occurred to me. Maybe I am not a big enough sub fan to appreciate it. I finally went, and i was not all that impressed. It was good but given all the hype, i expected to be blown away. I had a small turkey sub, and it had enough meat on it for at least 2-3 subs. I don't even think i finished half of it. It was just too much. The bread tasted pretty fresh. But it was just a (huge) cold sub. I felt like i could do that at home if i wanted to. Go here, if you like enough meat on your cold subs for 2-3 people, otherwise don't believe all that excitement. One night I was out running errands, and decided to get a quick and easy dinner for my boyfriend and I. I am new to A2, he is not. He described the place as being next to Whole Foods, and thought it would be a good place for me to go since I had not been there yet. He said they had great sandwiches and cookies. From his description, I thought it had to be a local joint. When I got to Dibella's, I called him to let him know where I was, and to confirm what he wanted on his Italian sub. He got a little nervous when he didn't recognize the name (though he couldn't remember the name of the place he intended for me to go to). I said they appear to have Italian subs and delicious cookies. He was hesitant because he had never heard of it (how long have you lived here?), but I had heard good things about it on Yelp I remembered. I said it looked good to me, I'm in...basically meaning, I am getting the food here, and not hunting down the other place:-) So I got the Italian sub for him, and a fairly plain Salami for myself (a picky sandwich eater) on their delicious wheat bread. The people that worked there were friendly, the place was clean, and had a lot of character. I decided to throw in a couple of cookies that appeared to be freshly baked, and was on my way. When I left, I realized where my boyfriend had wanted me to go. Turns out, the allusive sandwich place he was referring to was Potbelly...that has an establishment in every large town. Too funny. The verdict: He thought the food trumped Potbelly, and I would agree! Dibella's was a success, and we will definitely be back. This is one time where it paid to try something new. read more

I almost feel bad that it's taken me this long to review Dibella's! I'm aware it's a chain, but they hands-down make the best sub in Ann Arbor. (For all of you U of M students... it's WAY better than Jimmy Johns. Like 100x better). In high school, my friend and I used to come here EVERY DAY after class and before water polo practice and eat a whole small sub each. You know, like an after school, pre-workout snack. (I would be 300 lbs if I tried this now, *tear*). And then we would go to water polo practice and prove the ole "you must wait 30 minutes after you eat before swimming" myth wrong. Yum. Get the Everything roll, and try either the Godfather or the Old Fashioned Assorted. And get a cookie too (or two). read more

DiBella's is quite tasty, and you can get out of there on a budget if you order the Large sub and split it (I think that's 7" or so per person). I have tried the Chicken Cheesesteak, which was good but a bit bland. I partially blame myself for not getting any topping on it, but it's not like you go to Philly and they add lettuce and tomato... I went back and got the Godfather and that was also good. A quick suggestion they could implement painlessly is to change how the toppings are laid out. Subway and Potbelly do it best by putting the meat on one side, then layering the toppings above. DiBella's puts the bread open like a cross-section V, puts in the meat first (the bottom of the V) then the toppings on top. Well considering no one eats it like that (we all eat it on our side) you get the problem of either taking a bite of 100% meat or 100% toppings. Gotta layer better boys. Otherwise the taste isn't bad. Better than Subway, not much better than Potbelly. read more

The sub sandwiches here are as good as it gets. It's hard to eat a "chain" sandwich after enjoying one from Dibella's. Make sure you add oil to your sub. I'm not sure what they use in it but it's delicious! read more

Love this place. I go regularly and have never been let down. I have turned several other people on to this place and have heard nothing but good reviews. It doesn't get any better than the Godfather sub with grilled peppers and onions. They have a wide menu for a sub shop and the entire place is reminiscent of a 1940's diner. You order at a long counter and your food is prepared in front of you. The seating area is comfortable and classy, although I usually get mine to go because I live across the street. Check this place out the next time you have the urge for a good sub. I think the only thing that detracts from the experience is the location. It's in a strip mall next to an Old Country Buffet (barf). It deserves much better neighbors, and could probably increase its traffic with more visibility from the road. read more

I just ate here about a 1/2 hr ago, and the fact that I'm reviewing it so fast is not a good thing. I was going in with very high expectations because of all the raves on here. I ordered the hot godfather on everything bread, and it took a good 5 minutes for the manager to realize he didn't know how to use my credit card, so he made me READ ALOUD the credit card number to him. I'm just hoping there weren't any identity thieves in the vicinity. Anyway, now to the food. The first bite was pretty good. Each bite got a bit worse until I quickly realized how much greasy meat was sitting in my stomach. My stomach hasn't been happy with my decision. You'd be hard-pressed to find a better sub, anywhere. The flavors are full & bold, with an emphasis on actually being able to taste the meat instead of searching for it like most other sandwich places. The large Godfather (spicy, of course) with everything (either toasted or not) is a staple, you can't go wrong- and you can practically feed a family of 4 with it. read more

LOVE Dibellas. Coming from NJ, its impossible to find a good sloppy tasty sub here. I always get the cheesesteaks and italian cold cut subs. If you love old timey music, you'll love atmosphere! Love me some DiBella's. Best chain sub I've had by far. My favorite part is that you have the option of leaving the bread soft and room temperature but then they cook your meats and melt the cheese. Most places toast the bread and the meat and cheese is either cold or undercooked. This place does it perfectly. Cookies are really good too. Overall I go to local mom and pop shops whenever possible, but if I'm craving a chain joint this is the best easily. read more

The service is poor. When I get there there is a sign that says, "Wait here," so I wait there and five minutes go by before anyone notices me. Then at various times three guys are all talking to me with partial information so I have to put it together to make any sense of it. I choose multigrain bread. When I get my sandwich the stuff inside is good, but the bread overwhelms the stuff inside so much that it is not an enjoyable repast. The "horsey sauce" horseradish mayonnaise has no zing to it as any good sauce using the name horseradish must have. The chocolate chip cookie is not so good. The choice of a beverage is very limited. I know that I'm swimming against the tide, but based on the previous reviews I was expecting a really fantastic sandwich and I was disappointed. Yes, the sub was better than Jimmy John's or Subway, but it was more expensive and much slower. We had the Cheesesteak and the Buffalo Chicken and neither was that flavorful. I'll admit I crave these silly sandwiches when I come to Ann Arbor to visit. My husband always go on one of our vacation days-- in the midst of the weekday-- at lunch-- to remember how nice it was to go during a lunch break when we lived here in Ann Arbor. Came here with my co-workers when I was in from out of town. Very good subs at very good prices. They are HUGE. I got the medium and I was stuffed, the small is good for lunch and the large, well - that's 2 meals right there. The location is in a strip-mall but the inside is rather charming. You wait in line and they yell at you to come place an order and give you a number. It's my kind of setting. I got the cowboy which was good and would love to try the other options. The filling wasn't the star here the bread was. Dear god the bread was AWESOME. I can't wait to come back next time I am in town for some kick-ass subs. Dibella's is the BEST sandwich shop in the Ann Arbor area, hands down. The subs here are SOOOOOO delicious, I really cannot explain how amazing they are. Let me say this: I love sandwiches, they are probably my favorite food (yep, boring old sandwiches hit the spot), and I am VERY particular about what makes a great sandwich. Well, somehow Dibella's has taken all of the greatest parts of sandwich making and combined them into the holy grail! This very old sub shop is a perfect place for lunch. The service is fast, the staff exceptionally friendly, and the choices plentiful. There was a nice veggie sub for the vegetarian in our party. I had a simple tuna on a very nice wheat roll. The sub with ham was filled with a plentiful amount. The prices at DiBella's are reasonable and the decor cosy and fun. This is a great place for lunch. Oh Dibella's... I've been going here since high school and it was by far one of my favorite lunch spots because they had a capicolla sandwich which i couldn't find anywhere else! This is still true today, however they've made it better. They've made it a hot sandwich! Although this place is a chain restaurant, I haven't seen many of them around and I kind of like it that way. This place is always hopping at lunch and rightfully so, they're delicious. Here's how it works, you order a sandwich, they ask you, hot or cold... what type of bread... what type of cheese... mayo, mustard, or hot peppers... lettuce, tomato, or onion... salt, pepper, oil, or italian seasoning and then you're done. Make it a combo by adding a side/bag of chips/cookie and a drink and it's a great meal. Although their prices have gone up since I started eating there, it hasn't deterred me from coming back over and over again. Dibella's, I wish you'd open up a shop in downtown Chicago! read more

AWESOME NY style subs!! I actually have a roomate from Rochester, NY, and he has a knack for making MASSIVE sub sandwiches on entire loaves of Italian bread--I now see where he got that idea. The bread here is awesome...although I'm not sure how much I actually appreciated the everything bread with my sandwich, I may go with the regular next time. I went here for lunch on a Wed and there was a HUGE line, so be prepared to wait. Also, the ordering may seem a bit complicated when you get there, but the cashiers there literally walk you right through it. The atmosphere was kinda cool - it wasn't overbearing. I got a basic turkey sub but decided to have it hot instead of cold and i recommend the grilled to anyone! They melt the cheese on top of the meat and add that to the perfect cut of sub bread. As always pasta salad varies from place to place, I wasn't crazy about the macaroni salad, so i recommend the chips or another item. Fantastic place for any sandwich lover! Will definitely be back! My whole family loves DiBella's! The bread is freshly baked and delicious as are all the other ingredients they use. So many yummy combinations to try when building your own sub....I love that! We've been to the Auburn Hills and Ann Arbor locations, and both restaurants were clean and staffs are always friendly and helpful. So don't get me wrong. I like Dibella's the Everything bread and they make their sandwiches well. The portions are very big, and I have never really felt that I needed any more than a small. The cookies are pretty good. It's a little pricey, and I wish that they had more interesting veggie options, or at least a little more non meat-based variety. Also, the peppers are just not that tasty in my opinion, which is too bad. Also on a recent visit one of our subs had under baked bread - it was still doughy in the middle. I work nearby so I've been here a few times and It has never disappointed me. The subs are fabulous. I've had the godfather and the meatball and they are both delicious. The meatball can be very messy, but it was worth it. The everything bread is a must try. It adds so much flavor and it really changes the sub, in a good way. The service is friendly and fast. The only thing that sucks, is that when I sit on the table its almost always dirty, but I think it's because they are so busy that they don't have time to wipe them. Solid lunch joint if you're one of the many people working in the area. A little on the expensive side but at least they're consistent. I'm a big fan of their cheesesteak and it delivers every time I go there. The downside is waiting for the hot sandwich. As for their cold sandwiches, I'm really not a fan. Their bread is just too heavy and it tastes like a slightly higher quality version of Subway. When asking about chips, they don't have Cheetos and they don't have Vickie's BBQ even though she told me they did when I specifically asked. Taste: Bread is buttery and moist. A medium here is probably a large elsewhere...I expected more meat to be honest; why else would you enable someone to choose three kinds of meat? The first time I got take out from here there were a couple things missing. We went back to get them and they added in a bag of mini chocolate chip cookies. I have gotten food from the Ann Arbor DiBellas several times. Normally I order delivery especially since they often have it for free. It has always been super speedy. I just went in for pick up for the first time this week. I was very happy to see everyone I saw was wearing masks. I was greeted when I walked in. The food was awesome as always.
