Had a great lunch here while in Ann Arbor for a workshop. The food was great, very filling for an 8 inch sub. Definitely recommend the house sandwich - get it grilled! They have soda, chips and cookies as well as a huge selection of sandwiches and bowls. Perfect for a lunch or dinner on the go. They have limited seating inside as well as two picnic tables outside. The bread itself was very good, it was crispy and warm however everything else inside of the sandwich was not warm at all. All I really tasted in my sandwich was the turkey, and sometimes the jalapeños when I would take a bite of them. They have hot and cold sandwiches there, where you can get the hot ones grilled, but they did not have any turkey sandwiches that went on the grill. This place makes a great, simple sandwich at a reasonable price. The core essentials are there. Meat? Sliced-to-order, tastes fresh. Bread? Just hard enough and also plenty of resistance to sogginess. Veggies? Nothing special - the usual lettuce/onion/tomato. Sauce? A traditional oil/vinegar/oregano combo which also happens to be my favorite. The interior and decor isn't anything impressive (definitely a hole-in-the-wall feel), and walking in, you feel like it's been in Ann Arbor for 30 years (I don't actually have any idea how old this place is). I've always had great service at Sottini's. The subs are just bad, though. I went once a few years ago and left thinking I'd never go back. Was in the area and in a rush recently and decided to give it another chance. The subs were still bad. The bread is tissue-paper quality and the meats are thin. Toppings don't add much to the whole experience. I'd highly recommend you drop into a nearby cafe for a bite if you're in the area instead. I had a hot sub; chicken with pepper jack cheese, jalapeños, LTO, oregano, oil and vinegar. We came here for lunch on a Saturday and were the only customers. As others have said, the place is a hole in the wall and the people who worked there weren't very friendly and acted as if they wanted us to hurry up and order so they could get back to more important things. I had the Fab 1 and my husband had the Fab 3 and they were both very good and not very expensive. You can make a sandwich a combo with chips and a drink. They also have homemade baklava or pre-packaged baked goods for dessert. If you worked nearby, this would be a solid take out place that wouldn't break the bank. read more

I basically ate some toasted bread with mustard on it. Had to wait about 5 minutes for someone to ring me up to pay. They also have a creepy drawing that demands that you tip. It baffles my mind that I'm the first to review Sottini's. This place is Ann Arbor's hidden gem of a sub shop. I have traveled the world (OK, maybe just the US) looking for a better sub shop and I have not found one. The veggie sub, grilled with guacamole is always fresh and always delicious and I've been getting it for years. I'd recommend getting most subs grilled and if you're starving, go for the 16 inch. Sottini's is a family joint, all the kids working there are friendly and funny. If you go in often, they'll recognized you and build up a rapport. Their banter is beyond entertaining. I checked Sottini's out for the first time this week. I got the veggie sub (8 inches was plenty!) which has provolone, swiss and guacamole. I had it grilled, which turns the bread nice and crusty. They dress the sandwiches with tomato, lettuce, oil and vinegar and oregano, and I thought the oregano really adds something. I also got a small serving of potato salad as a side. Everything was fresh and tasty, and my complete takeout meal was just over $6. They also sell pre-made meat pies or spinach and cheese pies for between $2.50 and $4. I'm thinking about picking up one of those to go sometime for a quick and cheap lunch. read more

They're delicious, the pricing is decent, they have a good selection of potato salad, macaroni salad, and other assorted sides, as well as a broad selection of beverages and chips. I am usually there for lunch, and if you go during the peak lunch hour it will be crowded, there will be a wait. It is a small place and seating is limited. But it sure as hell beats Jimmy Johns, Subway, or Quiznos. read more

I stopped in to Sottini's for the first time today. I was hoping for a diamond in the rough. I found ... the hole in the rock where the diamond used to be. : ( The people working there were nice enough, and even after 1pm, there was a steady stream of customers. It's an old place, which could be cool, except that it has a slightly strange odor to it and seemed a little dirty ... not the scent of fresh subs, unfortunately. I ordered a turkey and cheese sub. The plusses: plenty of turkey and toppings, and they grill the sub, so the bread gets a little crusty/chewy and the cheese melts. The minuses: whatever is passing for "mayo" in there is not mayo. It's not Hellman's, anyway. It might actually by Miracle Whip, which for me is an anti-miracle. In any case, it was sweet. The biggest complaint: the quality of the meat is not great. I'm the kind of person who will only buy Boar's Head or similar quality. I want to be able to see strands of turkey meat in my turkey. This meat, while sliced nicely thin, was quite spongy and thus very processed. I care about meat quality, and so do not want to buy out what I wouldn't buy for myself at home. But if you are relaxed about such things, it's probably fine. There were a lot of people there, so somebody likes the place. The prices are decent - between $4-$5 for an 8" sub. Maybe a different kind of sub would be better?? read more

Are you serious? Really? I constantly complain to everyone who'll listen that Ann Arbor lacks any decent sub shop. If you think Sottini's is what a real sub shop is supposed to be, you've obviously been "searching the US" only in places like Utah or South Dakota. Their bread is flabby, squishy, Wonder Bread-like crap, not real crusty Italian sub bread like anyplace worth their salt. I've had better subs not just in places I've lived where they are readily available (New York City) but also in places like Lawrence, KS. Dear God. Everyone else: avoid at ALL COSTS. Gross. Maybe being from further east (I've spent time in New York City and Rochester, NY) where we have real sandwich shops had something to do with it, but this was one of the worst subs I've ever had. I ordered a meatball sub, and paid $0.40 extra for hot peppers. It's still not expensive, especially for the advertised 8" size. Before I saw the thing I was planning on saving half for later. A few minutes later, I got my sub. The bread was thin, hot, and soggy. They'd obviously put the whole thing in the microwave. The cheese was melted stickily onto the bread. The meatballs had not been simmering in tomato sauce, like they are at any decent sandwich place (hell, even Subway). They'd just put them in the microwave along with the bread and cheese. The worst part though was the sauce. It was cool, paste-like, and tasted of iron and tomatoes, and nothing else. They had just spread it onto the gaps left in the bread in front of the meatballs, meaning there was none on the sides of the meatballs or behind them, in with the cheese and peppers. It was also tiny. So let's sum up: small, hot, soggy bread, tasteless cheese with a consistency indistinguishable from the bread, bland meatballs, and cold, thick tomato paste that tasted like it came from a can. I don't know what happened with the one really negative review. But I was really pleasantly surprised by this place. It is like an old-fashioned Italian deli run by a middle-eastern family so there is a nice twist. The sandwiches were really good-- the bread in particular is really delicious (we had toasted subs, so maybe that explains the discrepancy in reviews)-- but it was better than Jimmy Johns and WAY better than subway. The meat was freshly shaved-- that was a key difference from the chain places. Freshly shaved pastrami and roast beef taste WAY better than the stuff in the plastic containers. Also, they had interesting soup of the day-- middle east lamb soup. You can also get hummus or falafel subs, which I bet are really good. This is a cool, affordable, local place that is really unique, delicious, the service is good, polite and quick. Highly recommend. read more

Not even going to lie, some things about Sottini's are gross. If you are at all uptight, you should NOT eat here, ever. Take for instance the fake plant in the window--it has NEVER been dusted. That being said, it's incredibly cheap and filling. The meat is freshly sliced and you get a LOT of it. I'm pretty sure the sub buns are from the famous Amoroso's. It's just a really quirky, neighborhood place that goes gangbusters at lunch from the surrounding law offices and courts. I'm sure the dressing on their subs is just plain old oil and vinegar, but it somehow is magically transformed into the best sub dressing ever. Their wolverine sub is totally worth a trip in, and is definitely 5 stars. Everything else about it (except their low, low prices) is 1 star. hence the 3 star average. read more

Yeah, the atmosphere is most definitely lacking and the service was ok. I came in with an internet coupon on my phone and was met with instant hostility when I mentioned that I wanted to use it. I was actually primed for this reaction because I realize that there is no way the restaurant is making any money off of these deals, but it didn't make it any less uncomfortable. Also, if you're putting one of these coupons out there you're employees should know about it and service shouldn't suffer because of it. If you don't want to participate, then don't. Eventually, the gals working there warmed up to me and my husband because we're nice people and we have good senses of humor, but if you're a bit sensitive when it comes to dealing with attitudes then you might have a problem. Anyway, my sub was actually really good. Nothing life-changing, but just as good as Subway if not a shade better. Prices are good as well. If I'm in the mood to order a take-out sub, I'll happily order from Sotini's rather than go to a chain. I don't think I'd eat in again, though.
