I think I've found my new garage! Trevor, the owner, is very professional and friendly, and Chris, one of his technicians, did an excellent job. My Prius developed a problem on Friday afternoon, August 7. After the car was towed to the shop, they had it running smoothly again by Monday morning, August 10. I really appreciate how quickly and professionally they handled the problem. They are busy with their regular customers, so if you're planning to bring your car in, I recommend calling ahead and giving them a heads-up. After reading numerous maintenance procedures recommended on YouTube, I decided to have the Throttle Body assembly completely cleaned since I had almost 100k miles on my 2017 Silverado. This is one of those procedures nobody thinks about, like changing brake fluid. Trevor was able to schedule me at their opening time which is 6a.m. (not the usual start time for most shops). I asked him to perform an oil and filter change at the same time with my oil and filter. He completed both jobs by 10 a.m. along with lubing various zerks and undercarriage spots, along with checking all fluids. I must say I am completely floored by the level of service from this shop. I have been going to this shop for about two years and have had nothing but superior customer service. I refer people here whenever they ask me if I "know a good place" and sure enough....I know the best place! Fun story: Recently I received a refund in the mail, completely out of nowhere, with a hand written letter apologizing for something that I didn't even realize had happened. This shop saw me and my vehicle getting a smog across the street and I had forgotten that I had already taken it to Dick and Ryan's several months prior. They sent me a full refund and this letter explaining that they had made a mistake and realized there error when they saw me across the street and pulled my records. I had no idea and would have never known if not for their honesty. * disclaimer - I only went to the other shop because I was given a coupon and when I drove out their driveway I was kicking myself for not going to Dick and Ryan's when I saw their "we do smog" signs outside. I dropped my car there off-hours to get an estimate for a "pulsating" brake issue and a oil change. The diagnosis was for new front rotors and a brake job. I get a callback, he says the total will be something like $750. Wow seems like a lot, I'm thinking. I tell them to forget it and that I'll pick up my car later. So I call my old mechanic in San Jose (not telling him what our original estimate was) and he gives me an estimate for a rotor/brake/oil change... $350! They call me back to tell me that my car is ready for pick up, and they can even take my credit card info over the phone. ~$115! WTF? I ask what they're charging me for. They forgot to tell me about ~$65 for the brake inspection! They went ahead and did the oil change. I didn't authorize the oil change! So be it, I'm paying for my own lack of attention to detail. I think it was an honest mistake on their part doing the oil change without the go-ahead. And my fault for not knowing their inspection fee and oil change rates... They seem like nice enough people, and their shop is clean and orderly. But the prices seem to be at a premium and that alone is going to keep me from going back. read more

Dick and Ryan's Auto is by and large the best auto shop I have ever been to. Situation- My SUV has sat dormant in the driveway for 14 months while I have been in Iraq. The Registration has been expired, the check engine light is on, and I need to get it smog checked. Mission- Get the SUV smog checked and registration up-to-date without getting pulled over or breaking down. Execution- I took it to the Nissan Dealership for a new catalytic converter (addresses the check engine light); the dealership took 2 days longer than they originally indicated and charged me A LOT of money to do the work. They also specified that I needed a full service. Enter Dick and Ryan's: I call them at 1650 (4:50 pm if you're in the USAF) and ask if they can get my vehicle smog checked. "Of course!" they reply, and even stay a few minutes past closing time to ensure that I get everything taken care of. They give the truck a once over, identify potential "fix-its", provide accurate scheduling information, and go the extra mile to make sure the experience is pleasant. WOW!, what a refreshing change from the dealership! Service and Support- Outstanding! Prices are a little more than other places, but the personal attention, focus on detail, and quality of service make it worthwhile. I go out of my way to support MOM & POP business anyway, and Dick and Ryan's has been a Livermore Fixture for as long as I can remember, for good reason. If they can't do something, they tell you up front, refer you to quality service locations; if they can do it, they ensure the prices are noted up front, and are all about taking care of your vehicle in the best way possible. Finally, they address me by name, invite me to take a look at things as they go, and make sure I understand the whats and whys before I sign anything. Visited these guys to unlock a broken door. A bit overpriced, but the door is unlocked and they were fast. They were so friendly and honest - it would have cost +$750 to fix the door on my beater, and they practically reccommended that I shouldn't bother. We had another beater submitted for smog inspection, and they saw it fail right away. They didn't finish the test and didn't charge us for it, which was awesome. read more

I was impressed by their excellent customer service, and they got the problem diagnosed and corrected at once. I my dealings with them I found them honest and reasonably priced, and when I was late to pick up my car they even stayed late! Great people, great service. I've had all of my cars, trucks & vans serviced at Dick & Ryan's for many years. Not only are they honest & trustworthy, but they give good solid advise. I had a van that was getting a bit long in the tooth and it needed a bunch of expensive work done. Rather then soaking me for lots of $$ the guys suggested that I trade it in as is and get a new vehicle. They would be losing my business for a few years with the purchase of a new car, not to mention that the van would not be residing in their shop. I've had my truck in for service twice now - and their work couldn't have been better. Having a brother who is a mechanic (but 1500 miles away from CA) - I know a little more about car mechanics and dealers. Dick and Ryan's charge more than a chain location - maybe even close to dealer rates - but if you know anything about auto mechanics...it's that they are gunslingers - they come and go like the wind - the guy who worked on your car last year is long gone and they're training a new one. It's foolish to look for the low bid for your car repairs - 'cause when you turn the key - you want the car to start - NOW! and get you safely from point A to point B. read more

This is my first and only stop for car service. Trevor is quite simply the only person I trust with my cars. He never fails to give honest and fair pricing, will tell me when it's out of his depth, or if something simply doesn't need to be done. I recently had a problem with the Power Control Module on my Ford. Trevor could have easily done the work, charged me upwards of $2,000 to do so and I probably would have paid it. Instead, he did his research and determined that the part fell under a very obscure warranty that I certainly would not have found. Rather than do the work himself, Trevor suggested I take it back to the dealer and even provided me with all the backup information to ensure that I'd be covered under the warranty. Who does this? No mechanic I've ever met. If you're having anyone else work on your car, you are absolutely out of your mind. There is no one I trust more. read more

I've been using Dick & Ryan's shop since I purchased a 1989 Dodge Colt new. I didn't price shop so can't comment to those who think their pricing is high. I know it has always been substantially less than the dealer, but more importantly, they are local, they've always been professional and honest with estimates and quick to call if they find something additional before continuing the work. Whenever there was an alternative repair choice, Trevor would explain both in detail, pros and cons, and not pressure me to use the higher priced option. I never would have kept that commute car as long if I hadn't been able to depend on their work, (and probably would still be driving it if someone hadn't bashed it in ;) When I needed a new car and was checking used cars, I had their shop do pre-sale inspections. They were able to keep me from buying someone else's problems - the fee for the inspections was well worth it and pricing was in line iwth other shops. Being able to have a car run dependably is worth much more than finding the cheapest price - Currently I drive much less so the maintenance schedule for my car is based on months, not mileage. Trevor and team let me know if there are items that are still in fine shape so I don't waste money for unnecessary maintenance, but also point out the important ones to complete. My current vehicle is a Nissan and not only is D&R's more cost effective, they have completed repairs that were never done properly by the Nissan dealership, even under warranty. I'm contemplating driving cross country instead of fiying, and the first step in decision will be having a road inspection by Dick & Ryan. read more

Not only do they do a great job, but they're honest about the work that *doesn't* need to be done too. Like, you don't need to change that part yet, it's still got another 10,000 miles left on it. I took my C-5 here for some major suspension and brake repair as it was showing it's age, sagging quite a lot, the brakes pulsed and my 99 Vet needed a face lift. Trevor was great on talking about the best options needed and his inspection tactics were thorough to assure I would be happy when the job was done. Trevor and his mechanics did a great job and now my Vet rides better than it did when it was brand new. I brought my 1991 Bronco that was having a starting problem. After diagnosing the problem they told me the repair would be $450.00. I asked them to go ahead and repair, after picking up the bronco I drove to work and the car would not start. I had the bronco towed back to the business where they gave me another reason I was having an issue. After discussing with them, I authorized repair $342.00. When I received the truck I went home and still the starter motor kept engaged. I decided to have the car towed to Ace fuel in San Joes they repaired it and I have not had a problem in 10 months. This establishment is only good for minor repairs, oil change and lubrication's only. This was a very expensive mistake when I called them and explain the issue to them a gentleman on the phone could not understand the technical details of electronic systems. Skill set is not much better than a shade tree mechanic. I do not have hard feelings against this establishment; this post is only a warning to other would be first-timers be careful they shotgun problem by replacing all part surroundings the issue. All relates to troubleshooting expertise that they are lacking. read more
