I wasn't quite sure what to expect when I decided to stop off for a taste (a taste in my book is a bit of an understatement). I was pleasantly surprised when I walked in that there was actually an aroma of smoke in the air and actually a bit of smoke floating around behind the counter as they had just pulled something out of the smoker. This is a walkup kinda place so you aren't going to get served table side. But you know what, this is what I'm used to from a BBQ joint. So yeah, I think that this is pretty much a assembly line type of establishment when it comes to their product, but it is a decent product. Not the best, but much better than some of the other well-established places in and around metro Detroit. My haul amounted to a half-pound of pulled pork, a half-pound of jalapeño and cheese sausage, a full rack of ribs, a pound of beef brisket, a side of mac and cheese, a side of fried of okra, and a side of potato salad. Don't judge me - I stock up so that I have some decent lunches for the upcoming work week! Everything amounted to decent BBQ. The only problem I had was the cutting style of their brisket. Some pieces were correct (against the grain) while others were stringy and with the grain and then just some blobs or chunks of stuff, but the flavor was still pretty good. I got the sausage that I did because I wanted something spicy, but the cheese frankly got in the way. I'd prefer simply a jalapeño sausage or something similar, but it was still tasty and smoky. The sauce they provide is a good general tomato base with some pepper and sweet notes. Pretty good for the standard crowd. The sides... well I would probably generally skip. The fried okra was actually pretty good but the mac and cheese was a bit too processed and the potato salad was rather flat. I will definitely make a stop by here again in the future. read more

Dickey's BBQ is pretty good, considering the price and quick service. They catered our wedding and our guests loved it! Now, a few years later, my company sometimes orders Dickey's for our biweekly lunch meetings. Everything is usually fine but this last experience was a souring one. The last time I picked up our order (for 11 people), upon arrival one of the owners told me that such a large order messes up their flow and wait times for in-house customers, and that we should order catering trays instead. She also told me they need more time to get the order ready (the online pick-up time selected was 45 minutes from the submit time); if they needed more time I completely understand, but why didn't someone just call to let me know? Instead I spent 20 minutes in the restaurant waiting for our order, feeling like an inconvenience. I'm not sure we'll be going back to order for our company work meetings. They have a rewards card, but FYI you can't use it on an online order. read more

Maybe its so good it sells out quickly or they just don't make enough beforehand? I don't know but its not a bad place. One issue I have it the speed of service. Meh. Pretty generic. Unless you are in a hurry, you can find better barbecue around the corner at the Meat Shoppe, next to Annie's and the dentist's office. It's not that Dickeys is bad, but we always feel like we need a shower after eating there and it seems more like their stuff is "assembled" rather than freshly cooked, if that makes sense. However, they get bonus points for having a self-serve soda machine AND a self-serve soft-serve ice cream machine... meaning you can make yourself a homemade ice cream float to go with your meal without spending any more. (Note: I am in no way affiliated with either Dickeys or The Meat Shoppe... just a customer who has eaten at both places and generally prefers the quality of the Meat Shoppe over Dickeys. To me and my family, Dickeys is sort of the "McDonalds of Barbecue," while The Meat Shoppe is more like "The Burger Joint of Barbecue". read more

The food is OK and the service is hit or miss - today was my last visit to Dickies. Service is either good or terrible. Today was terrible with the manager (same manager since they opened) trying to explain how buying 2 slides at 2.25 a piece (4.50) is the same as buying the value meal with 2 sides for 3.50. I may not be the smartest guy buy I am pretty sure 4.50 is greater than 3.50 as it always has been. Luckily the cashier saved the sale and made the change without involving the manager - I am certain the manager would have charged the higher amount and I would have either a. had a stroke and gone blind in one eye; b. left the food on the counter and walked out; or c. used paper and pencil to write out and make clear the basic math that the manager was not seeing. Unpretentious location in a strip mall, however the minute you walk in the wonderful aromas inform you that you are in for something special. This is not the place to bring a date but it's a mecca for lovers of old fashioned southern style barbque. I ordered brisket pulled pork and smoked turkey combo at the counter.. Lots of good choices of sides. The Macaroni and cheese was a bit of a disappointment as I found it lacking of any flavor besides cheese. However my partner in crime raved about it. Keep in mind that this is a chain BBQ place. As such the food is destined to be good on the best days, and awful on the worst. I've been here twice now and those were my two experiences. Bad food the first time and I swore I wouldn't be back, and I gave it another shot yesterday (with lowered expectations) and it was good. The Big BBQ Sandwich is slightly misleading. It's BBQ, and it's a sandwich, but it doesn't meet my definition of big, especially since its BBQ. If I ever come here with a strong appetite I'll make sure I get two sandwiches. I'll be back for sure, but I'll stay away from the disappointing side dishes. Why does a BBQ place need to serve ceasar salads, and what kind of BBQ joint doesn't have cornbread? Aside from the obvious errors made in constructing the menu the meats are pretty solid. A nice smokey flavor without tasting like you're chewing a wet log, and some decent sauces that are served hot (a nice touch). Friendly staff round out the overall experience to make this place worth going to, so long as I stick to a carnivorous diet (excluding the bun, onion and pickle that come in the sandwich. Looking for a little taste of the Lone Star State in the Mitten? Dickey's is your place. It's a family-run business, and their hearts are completely in it. They're on a learning curve, but have truly the best intentions to give everyone a stellar BBQ dining experience. The food is just plain good - and I've been disappointed (more than once) both at Slow's and Red Smoke. It's comfort food served to order, and some things are worth the wait. The brisket is excellent, and the sides would please everyone. It's reasonably priced, tasty and you get the feeling they want you to come back. And I most certainly will. read more

Dickey's is a chain started Texas in the 1940s. This is the first location I have been to and found that it was not as good as the Union Woodshop in Clarkston, Slow's BBQ in Detroit, and about equal to Lockhart's in Royal Oak, but far, far better than Famous Dave's in Novi. Having frequently enjoyed "real" barbeque in Texas many times, this is as close as I have found anywhere in the area. I tried the spicy cheddar sausage and found that it probably could have been spicier (if you've been to Texas and have had jalapeno or jalapeno-cheddar sausage and liked it, you'll want Dickey's to have more kick to it). The ribs were very good, and the brisket was a real winner. Sides were also tasty and the green beans (with bacon) were the Italian variety, so wide and flat, like you'll find in many places in the South. The only mild disappointment for sides was the macaroni and cheese, which tasted like it had been made with Velveeta. There are a few sauces to try: a semi-tangy regular sauce, a spicy sauce and a sweet sauce. I tried both the spicy and regular sauces and they were quite good. Not as good as some I've had in Texas, but better than most in Michigan. All in all, this is a solid barbeque joint. The owner told me he is working on getting a liquor license, which will enable him to sell Lone Star and Shiner beers. That should be a nice touch and I'm looking forward to it. read more

I'm surprised by all the negative reviews. We ate here tonight for the first time, and really liked everything. Chopped brisket, pulled pork, chicken, ham, ribs, and spicy sausage were all good. Sides were all good too. I completely agree with others comments that they need to improve their system for serving which takes way too long. Despite being setup like Chipotle, it takes as much time to order and get your food as if they were taking orders at tables.
