This was my first time eating inside of slows. Our server was incredibly kind and patient. She didn't rush us at all and had great suggestions. I got the deuces, which is two meats, two sides, and bread and pickles for $19. The pulled pork was great, the mashed sweet potato's and baked beans were phenomenal. I'm really disappointed with this experience. I ordered at the bar and when I got home, I realized my vegetarian sandwiches were made with pork. I called right away, and instead of offering a refund or a simple fix, they required me to drive back and return the incorrect sandwiches before they would remake them. That meant finding parking again and waiting while the new order was prepared. By the time I finally got home, all of the food was cold and hard. On top of that, the vegetarian "mock meat" had a strange spoiled taste. Mind you we regularly eat this exact meal. I came in without a reservation on a Friday, luckily I was able to find two bar seats. I ordered wings 10/10 they come with no sauce. Baked beans 10/10, Cole slaw 10/10, and potato salad 5/10 and it had jalapeños in it. They have a mix of rock music playing which is cool. Our bartender helped us super quick and I ordered an old fashioned 10/10. I've came here before for barbecue as well and it's amazing. I plan to return as always. Meat was good. Brisket and pulled pork the better choices. The slaw and baked beans are some of the best I've had at any barbecue place. Six sauces to choose from. My favorites were the seasonal (nice blend of sweet and kick) and the SC Mustard (the best mustard-based sauce I've had, and I've eaten barbecue in South Carolina). Restaurant is large enough not to feel cramped. Plenty of servers who were attentive and helpful without being obtrusive. I have to say I wasn't thoroughly wowed by my lunch at Slow's. My husband and I came in for lunch and we split a Yardbird and a brisket sandwich. We also ordered the mac and cheese, and the waffle fries with cheese. The highlight of the meal was the Yardbird, and if everything in our meal was as good as this sandwich, this would have been a 4 star visit. It was so saucy that the chicken was spilling out of the bun. It was messy, delicious eating. The brisket sandwich was the opposite. This sandwich was so dry. It did come with BBQ sauce, of course, but I like brisket were the sauce is optional not a necessity. The meat itself lacked flavor. I wouldn't order this again. We asked for our waffle fries with the cheese on the side, and it didn't come that way. Rather, they had poured the cheese over the top. I should have sent it back. The reason you need the cheese on the side is the sauce only reaches the fries on the top. There are a couple of naked layers beneath. Didn't want to bother with sending it back though. Real deal bbq ver reasonably priced. Anytime we end up in the city we have a hard time not going here. Service is always good but definitely make a reservation. Not as good as Texas BBQ, but still delicious. I'm a brisket girl, but the brisket did not impress me here. It has a slightly tough chew and I would've preferred it more tender. The baby back ribs were pretty good and I'd say the pulled pork was the best- it had a really unique flavor and very tender. Mac n cheese and cole slaw aren't pictured here but both are amazing side dishes to go with these meats. I split all of this with another person and it was enough food for both of us. If I return, I'll probably just order the meat a-la-carte and one side. I love eating more meat than sides personally, but for my first time, trying the various sides was worth the try! read more

Believe it or not....this was my first time at Slows. It's been a Corktown staple for so long, I'm kinda embarrassed to say this. A friend of mine came in from out of town and he wanted to try some BBQ so we decided to do a pitstop into slows. We both love pork rinds and were surprised they were highly recommended and made fresh when ordered. These things came out hot and snapping like a rice crispy treat! The pulled pork was so dry and cold , I didn't eat it. The 1 slice of beef brisket was fatty and cold. The ribs were miniature with no seasoning or sauce. 3 little ribs. Finally the mack and cheese was average at best. Very plain with big noodles and hardly any cheese. Kraft Mac and cheese would have been better. My group was very disappointed. Good ol fasion smoked BBQ in downtown Detroit. Price is moderate to high, but the food quality is worth an occasional visit here. We did have to wait for about 30 minutes even there there were plenty of tables that seemed to be open, but must've been reserved or something. W chose to eat outside, which was an even better move. Slow's has been a favorite of mine for years, turning out reliably good barbecue. We started with the barbecue wings, which are not the typical Buffalo wings you might expect. These are full wings, nicely barbecued. ($15.). This trip I had the quarter rack, where I chose brisket as my optional second meat (you can also choose pulled pork or chicken). You get two sides (I chose beans and coleslaw), and a choice of either bread or cornbread. ($24.). The ribs are meaty, not fatty, and the brisket is tender and flavorful. While I didn't have it this trip, I would also recommend the Yardbird sandwich. Voted one of the top 3 best sandwiches in America, it has smoked chicken, sauteed mushrooms, cheddar and applewood smoked bacon in whole grain honey mustard BBQ sauce. ($13.50). Solid BBQ although I have definitely had better before. I got The Favorite (one of the combo options) with baby back ribs, beef brisket, BBQ chicken, waffle fries, cole slaw, and cornbread for $30. From the menu, it seemed like a lot of stuff, but turns out it was actually just a bit of each thing. For example, there was literally just one piece of beef brisket (although it was pretty tender and good). The 3 baby back ribs were decent, but slightly on the tougher side and a bit hard to get off the bones. The BBQ chicken was okay - honestly more like normal seasoned chicken than BBQ-like. They gave a good selection of different BBQ sauces so you can try each and use whichever you would like. However, I personally felt like each one was a bit too watery and for someone like me who prefers a thicker sauce, there wasn't really one that I liked all that much (the apple one was best though). As for the rest of the items in the combo, the waffle fries were nicely crispy although not actually that much better than the ones you would get at a fast food place. The one piece of cornbread was average quality, as was the coleslaw. There were also a couple pickle slices on the side. I also tried the Triple Threat Pork sandwich ($13.50). As the name suggests, this has pulled pork, bacon, and ham inside. While it was okay, it definitely could've used some other ingredients inside to complement the meats and provide some different flavors / textures. The food alone would've probably earned this place only 3 stars but I will bump it up to 4 stars because of the nice outdoor patio seating area. It is outdoors yet has a wall around it so it feels private and the road nearby isn't too noisy. Definitely a nice spot to sit and eat if the weather is good. The interior is fairly nice as well with a good amount of seating. The service speed was at times good and at times not as good. The combo came out literally within minutes, while we waited quite a while for the sandwich to arrive. The staff are fairly friendly and helpful. Overall, I would say Slows Bar BQ is a good option if you are looking for a chill spot to hang out with friends and enjoy the outdoor patio area. If you are specifically just looking for good BBQ though, then this might not be as high up on the list, although it still certainly gets the job done. read more

I rarely offer any reviews - mostly because it tends to be more grumpy people having a bad day over anything else. However...as I was leaving, I promised Carrie(?) at Slows I would - so here I am. Also - this might be long...sorry, not sorry. I was in town from Chicago for a wedding, and my uncle kept saying, "We should go try this place that looks good..." I figured my uncle *really* wanted to go, so I'll just make him happy and go. Plus, I do like BBQ so I was *kinda* up for it. Now, I wasn't holding out much hope, or holding my breath, of it being anything more than just "ok". Far too often and far too many times I've been greatly disappointed and left a place still hungry, because this "great BBQ" someone raved about - wasn't. That's why I was only *kinda* for wanting to go and just appease my uncle. Well *this* is definitely not f*cking *that*. Walking in the entrance through a big wood door, it just hits you square in the face immediately. I should have known then. I *should* have. But I was dumb. I was still reserving judgement. I've smelled food being smoked before. And I've been left disappointed far too many times when tasting it. This smell was different though. It was almost like I could already taste it. And I should have known as soon as I walked in the door and it slapped me in the face. But again, I was dumb. We got sat at a table by the hostess and upon our waitpersons suggestion, got 2 orders of the Favorite off the menu to share amongst 3 people. One had pork as the extra side, the other had chicken. It seemed like the best menu combo item to try several of their main dishes, and sides, that included ribs and brisket, and would feed the 3 of us. First off...the ribs were OMGOUTF*CKINGSTANDING. Just the right amount of smoke and flavor. But not just the ribs - for *ALL* the food. Everything. And those green beans...OMFG...keep those on the damn menu. Please. I'm begging you over here... Sorry...hang on...my mouth is watering now just thinking about it...dammit... Ok...Where was I...oh right, the food...While it was *all* very, very, good and had a lot of flavor, the ribs, the chicken, the pork...I've had arguably the best brisket on the planet at Franklin in Austin. There's little to no argument about Aaron's brisket. There's a reason it, and the chef, wins awards. Everything else since then though, just doesn't compare. And look, to be fair it's hard to compare with a James Beard Award Winner. I get it. Anything and everything else I have had elsewhere has either been too dry, too well done, no flavor, too burnt, no taste, no good smoke, a place that offered BBQ or brisket but was clearly *NOT* a BBQ or brisket place... Until now. Until I stepped into Slows, and sat my tattooed self down at a table. I forget the chefs name...Brian? Maybe? My. Guy. High five to you. Seriously. This is *THE* best brisket I have had outside of Austin, TX - f*cking hands down. I can't even begin to describe just how amazing it was for me to taste this and my eyes just lit up after the first bite. It's truly an honor to have tasted your cooking. Thank you so very much. And while I tried very little of most of the sauces Slows offers on their table (I like spicy, it just doesn't like me), while they too were outstanding, the true test of a good BBQ, like a good steak, is how well it stands alone without anything added to it. Let me tell you - you, the reader wondering if you should go and try this place, you don't *need* any sauce. It's a nice add on, but you'll be glad to taste the food naked. Well let me be clear - the food is naked. Not you at the table or bar. I think they frown upon that...I only tried little dabs of their sauces to see what they were about, but 75% of what I ate was sauce free. The flavoring of the meat was just way too damn good. Slows - I'll be back in October for another wedding and I'm already looking forward to eating here again. Oh - before I forget... I would like to also give 2 special shout outs. Our waitperson who's name escapes me, she pointed us in the direction of ordering the Favorite - excellent recommendation, and Carrie(?), damn I hope I got the name right, for taking the time to come over and speak to me and also giving us some literature about the history of Slows, Michigan Central Train Station, and the historic Corktown district. We are from out of state and went to the Slows stand at the Tigers game 5/1. There were about 12 sandwiches sitting open under and heat lamp that had been there a fair amount of time. The bowls of macaroni were dull and dried out and the food looked terrible. I asked the attendant if he would mind making me a fresh, hot sandwich and he said no -- those are hot, they are under the heat lamp. Slows BBQ- Now this is my second time I've been here and it's been about 8 years since I last visited. But I remember the first time I went in 2015, the sandwich was one of the best I've ever had. During this visit, the food was just okay, and even my boyfriend who frequents the place more often said that the food just wasn't as good as it used to be. The service at the bar was a little slow but she was making a ton of drinks so we understand we had to wait a bit to get our waters . We put our order in right away with Cesar salads and ordered the Texan and the Reason. The salads came out first and they were just okay. Not too flavorful of Cesar salad but that's okay. We were so excited for the sandwiches. They came out shortfalls after and were just okay. The flavors were not really what I anticipated from mine. Mine was just kinda boring, and I should have gotten something with coleslaw to give it more dimension. The reason was better, but still the sandwich was not as good as I remember. It's a lot not a cheap place to get food. We ended up paying about 50 bucks total for our lunch. Definitely appreciate the fact that it's Detroit owned located in cork town and still doing great, but I think I will try other places for sandwiches in the future! read more

Had high hopes. But was seriously disappointed. The ratings are great for this place. The Porkrinds as a starter were fantastic. The selection of sauces were varied and pretty tasty. Then came the Platter. Chopped brisket and Pulled pork along with bread coleslaw pickles and waffle fries. Coleslaw tasted like mayo and onions. Waffle fries came from a frozen bag. The bread was stale. Pickles were left off the plate The chopped brisket which Costs 4 dollars more than sliced tastes like it had been cooked days ago and was covered in sauce. My guess was it was left overs from Friday or Saturday. The pulled pork was decent but a little on the dry side, I probably would have overlooked that as it's tough to keep Pork butt moist except everything else was so bad .
