Fantastic working with these people! We needed a runner on our stairs, and they had a lot of options for patterns and widths. We were able to take home the sample boards to see how they looked on the stairs, which was much MUCH better than just taking a pic on a phone. My experience with Dicks Carpet One at this location was through an Insurance claim. They came out RIGHT AWAY, and talked the talk so they could take my deductible. After collecting the money, they NEVER showed up again. I had to call my insurance company again and again, until finally my adjuster told Dan to meet him at my house. Dan was angry at my persistence and his guys did a horrible job. The hardwood flooring had to be done twice and the pad under the carpet was not replaced so it is spotty and uneven when you walk on it. My insurance company had to bring another Carpet team in from Fremont to correct their mistakes. Dan's guys punctured my furniture and bashed in a game table. So on top of the horrible service and work, they ruined the things they put their hands on. Was this intentional, as a way of getting back at me? You decide. In the end, an original $8000 claim, turned into $23,000 paid out by insurance because of Dan's incompetency and negligence. I had a good experience with Dicks. Our original installer was complaining that some of our baseboard tile would be damaged and would not take any responsibility for any damage. Fired. Tina came out and made the measurements, about 3000sf of HOA common area, and returned the quote quickly. The price was acceptable and Dicks picked up the carpet we had ordered through the original "installer." You always expect some sort of damage moving and cutting large rolls of carpet around, especially in our extensive and tight staircases, but it was clear their installers took good care and respected our building. The final result was very good, especially around the stairs where the angles and construction of the steps are challenging. I never thought I'd say this, but I am officially a fan of Dicks. If you ever have the opportunity to have Dicks Carpet One of Oakland in your home, don't just walk away - RUN! Here's what you can expect from Dicks Carpet One of Oakland: 1. Total lack of respect for the customer's time (or property) 2. Questionable business practices (Double check your invoices and your contract!) 3. "Bonded and Insured" means nothing (Install that nanny cam now!) 4. Poor workmanship (See pictures of Dicks Carpet One work) 5. Top of their field in the art of "the customer the run around" 6. They really do "treat your home like their own" (think clogged toilet) 7. Higher prices than their competitors When we agreed to have a vendor in our insurance company's flooring network complete our repairs, we had the misfortune of having Dicks Carpet One of Oakland assigned to us. The workmen showed up when it was convenient - for them. A start time of 9:00 am meant they were likely to roll in sometime around 10:00 or 11:00 am. Some days they didn't show up at all. (Not real convenient for working people like us). It was relatively useless to contact the Dicks Carpet One coordinator. He was like a never ending tape loop of excuses. (Probably gets a lot of practice . . .) Before starting the work, a big batch of lumber was delivered to our home to acclimate prior to installation. A week later, the workmen came and used 2 single boards from the 3 large stacks. They hammered down all the warped areas and slapped some wood putty filler over the entire floor. When they left they took all the "extra" lumber. As our contract noted there would be 100 square feet of wood flooring replaced, we contacted the vendor coordinator. He told us they took it back to the warehouse to do precision cutting and pattern matching. Check out the pictures and you tell me where "pattern matching" came in. Dick's repair job looks nothing like the beautiful pre-flood parquet flooring I had. In the pictures you can see large headed black nails they used to secure the light oak flooring. I don't know what "dustless sanding" is supposed to look like, but I'm pretty sure it shouldn't leave a THICK BLANKET OF SAWDUST on everything - including the walls and inside the heater vents. (The vents the coordinator said would be taped off) I kept asking for a time line of when the varnish would be started. They kept saying they'd let us know. We came home from work one night and nearly stepped into the wet stain. I guess that's what Dicks Carpet One of Oakland considers "notice". Aside from paying extra for "dustless sanding", we were charged over $500 for work that wasn't done. They did remove those charges - after being asked to do so - TWICE. When the vendor told us the job was finished, we complained that the flooring had a scratchy feel. The dust mop would "catch" and when I'd run my hand across the floor and I could almost feel the splinters. We complained to the vendor's coordinator and were told that "that's what new flooring feels like, you're just used to your old floors which are worn down from years of use." (If you're looking for good customer service, this isn't the place.) Aside from several unpleasant interactions with them, one of our prized antiques "disappeared". Their workmen were the only ones who had authorized unsupervised access to the premises. We did report the incident to Dick's Carpet. Their general manager, Dan contacted me and noted they had completed an internal investigation and none of his people would do such a thing. He suggested it must have been "one of those other vendors". As far as theft (alleged) goes, unless you have a video of the act in progress, you've got nothing. We brought in another vendor (of our choice) to clean up after Dicks Carpet One. He noted several possibilities for the way the flooring turned out - all of them pointing to sloppy workmanship. Take a look at the pictures and you'll see what a $8,000 job from Dick's Carpet One in Oakland will get you. Bottom line: This is not a vendor you should even remotely consider for any of your flooring needs - EVER. read more

The hall carpet in my apartment building was badly damaged when the guest of a tenant tried to break her phone in half while walking down the hallway. The phone caught on fire and the woman dropped it on to the carpet where it burned a hole. Then she kicked the phone and it burned another hole and another hole and a large section of the carpet was ruined. My insurer offered a settlement to cover replacing the wall to wall carpet but I wanted to see about repairing the old carpet because it was a good quality all wool carpet. This turned out to not be a viable option but while inspecting the damage we discovered old oak flooring under the carpet. The building, which is almost 100 years old, had originally had hardwood borders down the hallways upstairs and downstairs with carpet runners inserted down the middle. I like the look of the old oak flooring so I decided to restore the hallways to the original design. This process required a few changes in plans but Dan worked with me at each stage and was very flexible and accommodating. Helped me find the perfect carpet design and when the time came for installation his crew showed up on time and did an excellent job and finished the entire job in one day. They replaced and refinished some hardwood floors for us that had been water damaged. Initially was happy with how the flooring looked but within a few months any areas covered by rugs, furniture etc started to discolor and turn bright yellow. The owner Daniel Biles came to evaluate and said he would follow up with us. That never happened, 6 weeks went by with no communication. He never returned our phone calls and emails, and soon nobody at Dick's would return our communications. Their "certified flooring network" warranty is a scam also. Daniel's explanation was that the yellow was the original floor color and the rest had faded (it was not - this was also the first time he'd been to our house so there was no way for him to comment on that, we also picked a white wash/grey stain). The warranty company said that this a normal reaction when wood floors are covered and expected - which is ridiculous and not true. We had our floors refinished (by a different company) in 2017 and none of this occurred in the following 3 years, let alone 9 months. They ruined our hardwood floors, it's going to cost us $20k to fix the damage they have done. I highly recommend avoiding this company. Fortunately i do have the time (and money) to pursue them for these costs. read more

I just had a bad experience with Dick;'s on Hegenberger, and ended up walking out. Now I know where they get the name. The women at the Dick's on Ashby at San Pablo were great - I went in there last week and they sat down and gave me very good, solid information on what I need to buy and how much it;ll cost. They recommended Pergo, because I said I needed the most durable laminate I could get for the money. They didn't have any Pergo I could look at, though, and suggested I go to the Dicks on Hegenberger. The man at the Dick's on Hegenberger was a big dick. He was obstructive at every turn, he had a real bitchy tude. I asked if I could look at his Pergo samples, and he didn't just say that he didn't have Pergo samples, but he challenged me on whether I really needed Pergo in a way that was just intended to cut me down, and not to be helpful. "We have lots of laminates, ther'es lots of laminates," he says. He was an old white guy and I'm a pushy middleaged jewish broad, and I just felt like he had a bad attitude. I wouldn't recommend any woman go to this store, don't know if he treats men with any more respect. I kept trying a couple of times, and finally, about the fifth or sixth time he blocked me, I just said thanks and left. I'd never go back here. I will go back to the Dicks on Ashby & San Pablo, and look for other dealers. read more

My Mother in Law took me here to buy a custom carpet for my daughter's room, OLA our unenthusiastic "sales" woman didn't seem to want to help with much. But we knew what we wanted and took our time looking for an area rug for my MIL's house too! You would think if this woman had the opportunity to sell 2 rugs at once, she would be more helpful and polite... PSH, yea right, she went back to the counter and sat on her ass while we looked around. I tried to give her the benefit of the doubt because she appeared to be disabled... We decided what we wanted and she sent me all the way across the showroom to grab the tag, and then she sent me all the way back with another sign that said "SOLD", you would think she could at least take care of that! Well, we needed to get the carpet bound and she said they have a guy come in 1 day a week, and she wasn't sure when he would be coming. WHAT?! I called back toward the end of the week and they said the man hadn't come yet, and it should be done by the weekend. I waited a few more days and called on a Tuesday, and they said he STILL hadn't come, they didn't even call to let me know there would be further delay... I still haven't received my f***in rug and I will never ever go back or recommend this place, if people ask where I got my daughters carpet (if I ever get it) I'll tell them they wouldn't want to know or GO! read more

I've already mentioned the helpfulness of the Carpet One Ashby branch staff, and had been working with them to schedule carpet measurement and installation, but went to the Hegenberger warehouse on a whim to check out their slightly larger selection. Going to the warehouse turned out to be a great idea, as their team (specifically Crystal) listened to my rushed situation and moved up my installation timetable by several days, essentially drawing me up a contract for exactly what I needed in five minutes. First thing the next morning, the installation team arrived (15 minutes early, no less) and I had new carpet in two hours. When our flooring was installed, there was a color difference that we had not anticipated due to a miscommunication. I contracted with Dick's to install carpet in a newly remodeled room with very nicely finished wooden baseboards and thresholds. The installation went fine, but afterwards I noticed little gouges on all the baseboards and thresholds. I contacted Dick's and they said that my contract states that they are not responsible for damage to baseboards and that my salesperson should have told me that. Well, she didn't, and refused to take responsibility for it. I had to spend $100 to get the baseboards refinished. After much wrangling Dick's credited me $60. I don't consider this doing good business. I will take my future carpet business elsewhere. read more

I purchased several large remnants and had the edges bound. I also purchased several pads, including one for a hall runner. When the carpets were delivered, the runner pad was missing. I went to the store and told them about the omission and told them I preferred a refund for the missing pad. The salesperson disappeared for over 30 minutes. The other salespersons kept assuring me that he was "still checking." I kept walking around and at one point could see a worker in back hurriedly cutting the pad. Shortly after, the salesperson came out and told me that he had "found" the pad. No refund for me! My total purchase was over $2000. By not returning the $30 I asked for, they convinced me to go elsewhere in the future; nor will I recommend them. Their attitude was off-putting. read more

Even though they are virtually never busy, they have no desire to help you. When we do have questions, they may not know the answer (for example why this certain type is better that, etc), but they do not make an effort to find the answer. Do not shop here.
