Was looking forward to visiting Dierberg today. Beware. We looked up the tasting hours and the website showed it was open until 5pm. We made a special trip there and pulled into the parking lot around 3pm with a few cars and a tour van in the parking lot, building doors wide open and a good number of customers inside tasting their wines. We walked inside and up to the counter and asked a host woman behind it what the tasting menu was. She then asked if we were part of the "private function." We said "no" and then we were told that a private party paid for the space and the host asked us to leave. Insulting and ridiculous. Not going back. read more

The place is beautiful, but devoid of coziness, warmth, vibe, or character. The only comfortable chairs (appeared to be red vinyl) are in areas where you can only get a peak of the outside. The rest are metal stools. We tried sitting outside, where there was a nice view, but you can hear electricity loudly humming in the background. We ordered a glass of Pinot Noir which was completely undrinkable. We are sure the owners poured a lot of money in this place, but unfortunately their designers were only interested in cold aesthetics. Stay away from the Moonstone cheese which was too harsh tasting and the crackers seem to have sugar in them, which does not fit the cheese. The stars were for the bartender who was a nice person and the fact they had blankets in baskets and foot heaters which are necessary. read more

The place is beautiful and modern with great views of the hills, and had cornhole and other games on the lawn. It was football season and it's always good to meet a fellow 49er fan. Dierberg's gorgeous tasting room is tucked away in Drum Canyon. The tasting offers 6 delicious wines, starting with two whites and a rosé, then moves on to various reds. The large barn doors on every side of the building make the inside feel very open. There are two bars and a few cozy areas to sit. Outside, there is a ton of patio seating and amazing views. The huge grassy area is perfect for picnics. There is also a beautiful succulent garden with a small walking path. They are both dog and kid-friendly. We sat inside at the bar since it was overcast when we arrived and Heather helped us. She was very knowledgeable about the wines and super friendly. About halfway through our tasting the sun came out and it made the grounds look even more stunning! I highly recommend checking out Dierberg on your next valley trip! read more

On a blustery day in the Santa Rita Hills the dog, my wife, mom, grandma, and I made it out to Dierberg Star Lane for a wine tasting. The lone barn behind the backdrop of the hills was truly a sight to behold. We had planned on tasting outside but with the wind howling we stayed inside instead. We were a little hesitant since we had our 85lb pittie with us but as others have said this place is VERY dog friendly. Service was awesome and we had a lot of fun making our way through the Bordeaux offerings from Star Lane and the Burgundy from Dierberg. We ended up going with the star lane membership and look forward to coming back to pick up our bottles and spending more afternoons at the Dierberg in the near future! read more

Kristin was our wine pouring expert. She explained each tasting with amazing knowledge. She knew the area and soil makeup where each grape came from and the percentage used to make each varietal. We were driving from Solvang to Lompoc and didn't have any wineries in mind to stop at until I opened up Yelp to see which wineries were dog friendly. Dierberg popped up and had a number of great reviews. When we pulled up, we immediately thought that the grounds were one of the most picturesque that we had seen in the area. The barn is such a great setting for the tasting. There is also a large grassy area and a number of outdoor tables. The weather was perfect so my husband and mother-in-law enjoyed sitting outside looking at the land with our dog while I tasted with my father-in-law. When we first arrived in the tasting room, we were warmly greeted and we each had 3 glasses set in front of us. I've been to a lot of wineries and this was the first time that I had 3 glasses to use for tasting. After we tried the whites, we were poured the 2 different pinot noirs to taste side by side. I really enjoyed the tasting and having the ability to taste side by side was a nice touch. The gals working there were very friendly and knowledgeable. One of the gals showed us a map and photos of the winery as well and explained to use where Happy Canyon was. They had a deal for 1 cent shipping if you purchased at least 6 bottles, so we did that and got the sauvignon blanc (2 bottles), pinot noir (santa maria, 2 bottles), pinot noir (santa rita hills), and cab. The wines arrived very quickly and in tact. I would definitely recommend a stop at Dierberg, especially if you like pinot noir. read more

Chardonnay were light and crisp, very light 2008 Star Lane Cab is incredible. It definitely lives up to its description of bold full bodied bursting flavors yet very smooth. 2007 Estate is similar yet provides different flavor nuances The younger wines were very smooth yet simply need time to age to gain more flavor. This winery offers great wine for the price and definitely has promise !! Cut barn, standing only but they had tables outside where families could sit and a few kids were playing bocce ball. They had a cheese plate you could buy. The staff was very knowledgeable and engaging. The wine club is a great deal if you are serious about good wine. read more

Very good wine and a beautiful property. The barn that is the tasting room looks rustic from the outside, but is very modern and classy. There is plenty of seating outdoors with a beautiful view and comfortable seating areas indoors as well. I was happy to see that they have a very traditional oaked chardonnay and both Cab Sav, Cab Franc and Malbec varietals. They also have the traditional Santa Rita Hills offering of Pinot and Syrah. The hospitality made the experience however. My server was extremely attentive and very knowledgable about not only the property but the varietals she was serving. She took the time to show me the maps they have displayed and where each of the vineyards I was tasting from were located. I highly recommend a visit here! read more

Such a beautiful winery! Dierberg Star is located down a secluded road off the 246. There is zero cell reception out there and it is so peaceful and quiet. The tasting room is simplistic and classy. The surrounding garden is very pretty and there is a nice outdoor area for sitting outside to drink. The server we had was great, she had a wonderful personality and was very passionate about the wines. Our favorites were the Cab Franc and their Santa Maria Valley Syrah. Their wines are definitely on the pricey side, I purchased the Cab Franc for $55, and the Syrah was $65. We were given cards for free tasting next time. I will hang on to them in hopes that someday soon we will make it back up there! read more

Outdoor seating is beautiful, location is fabulous. Restrooms are gender neutral, crowd is diverse and friendly. I was able to try their Dierberg Pinot, Dierberg Syrah and Star Lane Cabernet (all I was interested in anyway). The wines are great, I have had many other wines made using this vineyard so it was nice to try one made by the vineyard owner. I thought the tasting fee was a little steep, even though I was not charged for this abbreviated tasting. Came here on a beautiful afternoon a couple of weeks ago. Enjoyed doing a wine tasting outside with the pups. Lots of people brought food and snacks to enjoy - the table next to us had a particularly delicious-looking spread of french bread, several cheeses, and several meats. Will have to remember to do that next time! The person serving us our tastings was friendly and knowledgeable enough. The pours are pretty miniscule, though. I don't know how anybody would be able to decide to purchase a bottle based on the two sips in each pour. There should also be a "doggy cleanup" station. We brought bags and our pups didn't relieve themselves anyway, but there were several doggy chocolates on the grass. Since some people also brought their children to play in the grass, this could be a potentially unsanitary situation. Definitely a beautiful place to come hang out, but as far as tasting rooms go, is just a-ok. read more

Dierberg is such a beautiful vineyard! I love the barn look! They've even got a really cute spot with a tractor and barrels for photo ops while you're there. The wine there is amazing. I'm a huge fan of all their wines but especially the Pinot Noirs! The staff is super friendly and greet you with a smile. Fun fact about this tasting room is that they'll pour the tastings for you outside if you sit out at their patios too! I've been to lots of tasting rooms and the ones with patios usually don't do that! I came in on a busy afternoon and Kristin was able to pour and make conversation with everyone! We came by here for the first time over a year ago. The tour we were on chose this for the first stop. The tasting room is actually a pole barn. That is misleading somewhat as it looks great inside and out. There is a lot of room for parking. The building is nestled in the hills with nice views all around. The tasting room has two large bars, a few sitting areas and a private tasting room. This time around we were visiting for their pig roast. The pig was a nice bonus but in the end we all were just there to drink some wine. Everyone of the staff members are friendly and knowledgable. They made sure we always had wine in our glasses through out the event. We were lucky enough to meet the owners and they were also very friendly and sociable. Both of them went out of their way to speak to everyone in a genuine manner. The wine is very good. I am a big fan of the 2014 Star Lane Cabernet Sauvignon. It really stood out to me. Both Pinot Noir's we tried were also good, just not as good as the Cab. We were lucky enough to get to try the Astral. It is their flagship. It certainly is special and worth it for the right occasion. We will certainly be coming back here anytime we are in the area. read more

Dierberg was by far our favorite winery for many years (since moving to California), but I feel something is changing, and not for the better. The wine is still good, the grounds are still beautiful, the truck is one of my favorite picture spots of all time, but the staff is really what has made Dierberg shine above all others, and recently the staff turnover has been huge. We considered Dierberg our Santa Ynez family, but each time we visited we would find another "family member" gone. And for that reason we have come to the hard decision to end our membership with Dierberg. We loved that our kids were always welcomed. They staff knew them by name, and as soon as we arrived, my 6 year old would find one of her friends to ask to use the Kinetic Sand. We would also bring many friends with us on our visits, and will miss it dearly. read more

What a lovely find! It's location is beautiful and the wines are wonderful. We arrived without an appointment (we should have checked ahead of time), but thankfully Kristin was able to seat us. It worked perfectly because we needed to exit before the appointments and we were in a hurry, so a win for both! Kristin was lovely as she explained the wines and various regions and we enjoyed the scenery and walked away with a few bottles. The cabs are wonderful! What a wonderful visit to the Star Lane tasting room. Although it shares with Dierberg, Star Lane is my favorite label. The wine is superb and the service here is fantastic. Chris and Jessica helped us this time and their knowledge and friendly approach make for a wonderful visit. The location is out of town and off the beaten path which I adore because it's much quieter and I can have a more detailed discussion of the wines etc because the servers aren't busy with so many tasters. I've been a member of Dierberg for over a decade. I've bought multiple cases and have typically been pleased with my purchases. The issue? I recently got in my sporty vintage Alfa Romeo spider and took a beautiful drive up the coast with the intention of having a tasting at 4:30. Closing time? 5:00 pm. And this is where it went downhill from here..... I pulled up at 4:28. Next to me an Uber pulled up with 2 adorable ladies who popped out and started trying to enter the building. I watched.... perplexed as each door they attempted rejected them, until one found an open office door, braved the dark corridors, only to come out dejected .... heartbroken that not a single soul was there in the barren darkness. Apparently, there is no integrity at this establishment.....and that explains why I will be quitting their wine club. read more

Really? Yelp reviewers you are letting us Yelpers down. It use to be you could gain a good idea if the wines are poor, good or very good. It appears to becoming nothing more than a popularity contest for fun times. I should have guessed it when I saw very few that truly commented on the quality of the wine. But 4.5 stars?!!! Dieberg is one of the biggest disappointment I have had in vineyards in the 10 plus years of visiting vineyards on the central coast. 1. Associate never shared the cost of a tasting and I almost choked when I saw the fine print on the menu say $20. My bust for not verifying, but very unprofessional. Used to be wine tasting was free...then $5, then a few $10, and have even paid $15 at some awesome places. Have never paid $20 here. Napa yes, but that's why I will never go back to Napa. 2. That's $20 for 5 one ounce pours. That's $4 per ounce for me to decide if I like their wine to buy. 3. The other fine print at the bottom says tasting fee waived with 3 bottle purchase. That means it would be somewhere between $132-$312 to comp the 10 ounces of mediocre wine my wife and I had between us if I purchased a variety of the 5 wines tasted. Most places will comp with one or two bottle purchases. 4. Almost every piece of info about where the grapes were grown, the differences in wine making and what to expect on the palette I had to ask the associate. 5. Sauvignon Blanc was tart and grapefruity. Everything I disliked about SB until I tasted some decent SB. $22? Try Buttonwood vineyard for a smooth and flavorful SB. 6. Chardonnay $32 reminded me of a $7 Clos Dubois you can get at CVS or VONS. Tart, acidic, with some hint of oak. 7. SRH Pinot $52 had little bouquet but was smooth. Unfortunately Other than a hint of cherry I am grasping for a description. Not complex and no finish. If you want to pay $50 for a truly good Pinot...go down the street to Foley vineyards. 8. SMV Pinot $44, at last a bouquet! Drier, a bit young and a decent finish. Only wine I would take home...but not at this price. 9. Cabernet. $46 musty, jammy...no complexity or smooth finish that you would expect to get for $46. Bottom line...over rated, way over priced, and I will never go back. $20 for wine tasting...Dierberg should be ashamed . read more

By far, my favorite winery in the region. I don't want to give the gentle reader delusions of grandeur but I am in love with Dierberg. And Star Lane. Equally. Here's why: The staff: Friendly, approachable, professional and educated, when it isn't too busy they will even pour your tasting while you sit at the tables outside. The location: Located in a gorgeous green barn with a rolling grassy area to picnic in a beautiful canyon valley with a large succulent and indigenous garden, it is pretty and serene. The wine: The only Sauv Blanc (Star Lane) in the valley with no oak on it. Steel aged, crisp, classic Sauv Blanc that will cut through rich foods. The Star Lane Happy Canyon Estate wine blend is delicious, as is the Dierberg Pinot Noir. I was pleased with literally ALL of the wines, including 3 Saints which is their lesser expensive house wine. The wine club: I immediately joined because the experienc was so awesome and the lowest tier is 2 bottles a quarter which is fine. Their wine is excellent and I found it worth it to be invited to their summer barbecue parties with live music and food trucks etc. Cell phones don't work out here, but who doesn't need to unplug once in awhile? Beautiful vineyard, wonderful staff and great wine! We really enjoyed the pinots!! This was our fourth winery of the day and understandably, everyone was a little giggly. The staff didn't seem to mind and went about pouring our tastes and giving explanations and descriptions as they went. I asked to revisit one of the pinots and they had no problem with that either.
