Perhaps the folks at Backyard Depot did not realize that I spent years in and around the logging industry and am therefore qualified to judge the quality and measure the quantity of the wood delivered. Mayhap they expected to take advantage of someone who just wanted a romantic weekend fire in the fireplace. The wood delivered was fairly green- I suspect the term "seasoned" referred to a three month actual season, not that it was left to dry, as is customary in the business when calling wood "seasoned" More frustrating, however, was that when all was said and done, only about 2/3 of the wood we paid for was delivered. Uniformity of length wasn't horrible, but what was outrageous was the amount of scraps, splinters, greasy dirt, gravel, and broken glass. I hope for the sake of my neighbor's garden that the oily dirt wasn't too toxic! After the wood was loosely stacked and measured, I spent about an hour and a half digging through this detritus to salvage approximately two thirty gallon drums of splinters and kindling-like wood. I swallowed my pride and counted this towards the cubic feet required to make up a half cord. When done with that, I shoveled the dirt and garbage into a few heaping wheelbarrow loads. When the delivery man was dumping the load, and was bouncing the dump body to get out one last log, I had to tell him to stop, I didn't need all that dirt that was coming with it. Of course I hadn't seen all the garbage concealed in the rest of the load. After my experience, I read a couple other reviews of backyard depot mentioning fake 5-star reviews so I looked into them: yup, reviews from people whose only review is a 5-star for this company, and another from a guy who lives in California who got wood delivered (must have been quite a yummy delivery fee!). As for fearing that I'll be sued for my truthful review and opinion? Of course there's nothing wrong with that- and at the first hint of a lawsuit, a sample of that greasy dirt goes straight to the EPA...

None of the firewood would light and it was unusually heavy, so before calling I bought a moisture meter to be sure of the moisture content, and after testing roughly 20 pieces of firewood they ranged from 25% - 35% moisture, which means it was not seasoned firewood, even though it was passed off as seasoned firewood. When I called and spoke to Chris, who is listed here as the new owner and made a reasonable offer for him to either come pick up the wood or just charge us for greenwood (which we'd have to wait until next season to use) the guy basically called me a liar and said if I wrote any online reviews exposing him he'd sue me for defamation and I'd have massive legal bills. Based on this go-to response it seems he's had this conversation many times as he wasn't concerned at all with making things right, but immediately accused me of being dishonest and threatened to sue. I wonder how many people have not written reviews because of bogus legal threats? Now we're stuck with firewood we can't use and have to pay for another cord from someplace else.

I tried the local Ace Hardware in town to save the drive to Home Depot, but everything was so overpriced I couldn't bear. I gave Gilbert & Cole a try. On my first trip, I saved $2 on the paint brushes I previously bought at Ace and they were the same price as Home Depot. The store is not as large as HD or Lowe's, but they have all the basics if you realize you need something in the middle of a project. The great service and convenience were additional positives that made the overall experience exactly what you look for at your local hardware store. First I am not a novice carpenter, I needed more than 40 pieces of PT lumber and other materials. When I checked the stock, the pieces in the bens were what everyone else didn't want, in rough shape, and in low numbers. I was told they would hand select from a new pallet and that their workers are "very good" at avoiding the bad pieces. I was assured that workers would select pieces that were straight, with at least one clean edge and no large cracks. What did I get, about a third of the pieces were the rejects, not what was promised. I would have done better at Home Depot!

Go to Home Depot and show the guy behing the paint counter a swatch of your granite countertop and ask him what color he would recommend considering you have cherry cabinetry. Then, when he's done laughing at you, go to Waters & Brown and show your granite swatch to Sam and Lauren (I think her name is.) That's what I did and they immediately both thought of the same color, Quahog. So much darker than I ever wanted to go but wow, just the right color. Then Sam suggested Oxygen (a pale blue) for the ceiling and a color called America's Cup for the trim. The America's Cup (an off white) threw my husband into fits of worry. Will it be too yellow? Will it look dirty and dingy? Sam, promised it wouldn't and explained why . . . and he was right. So right, that my husband went back and asked him what color we should paint the adjoining hall, Sam made a recommendation and my husband walked out with that color paint. This is the same husband who would gladly spend months deliberating every decision, no matter how minute!!! So it is no exaggeration when I say that Sam may have single-handedly saved my marriage, or perhaps my husband's life because I was ready to either kill or divorce him. So as we decorate our entire home over, all I can say is thank God for Waters and Brown, and thank God for Sam!!!!
