We stepped a bit out of our usual food-travel zone and ventured down to Dim Sum King in the Bradenton/Sarasota to eat with family friends at their recommendation. With that being said, the hour-and-ten minute drive from Lutz was well worth the effort to eat the Dim Sum King (plus we made a day out of it). For starters, Dim Sum King excelled in all the categories of variety, quality, and freshness. Dim Sum King's dim sum is ordered from the menu - you mark the number of the respective dim sum plate that you wish to order on a dry-erase menu placard and receive the food as they are made. While different than the push-cart ordering which gives you more of an eyes-on confirmation of the actual dishes and a nostalgic-traditional dim-sum brunch vibe, the menu ordering offers a different approach. Ordering from the menu potentially means that each plate is cooked right and not sitting in the steaming cart which may result in overcooked food or sogginess. So the food does come out fresh here! When it comes to variety, Dim Sum King has most of the usual suspects - har gow, shui mai, chicken feet, short ribs, tripe, lo bak go (turnip cake), shrimp/beef/veggie cheung fun (rice noodle rolls), and sticky rice. Additionally, they carry other fanciful dim sum dishes such as zhaliang (fried Chinese donut rice noodle roll), crispy shrimp toast and stuffed eggplant. Simple and great dim sum menu! The quality is arguably the best I've had in a while. Each dish was made and cooked to perfection. Specific call outs to the crispy shrimp toast and beef cheung fun - these were amazing in both flavor and textures. Our friends told us that the place usually has a line. Perhaps it was right after the holidays, but they were seated promptly around 12pm when they arrived. The restaurant has two large round banquet tables that seat approximately 10, with smaller set-ups of booths and table between. They use to have so more options at Dim Sum King. I can definitely tell the difference. There's some dim sum here and entrees, but nothing very eye catching to me as before. I ordered the eggplant stuffed with shrimp dim sum. That was my fave. The crab Rangoon was quite small and lacking of filling and flavor. My husband has the beef chow fun and we have definitely had better and tiny pieces of protein for the price was not worth it. This hidden gem is covered by a bland exterior and not much to write about inside either. The staff was friendly and greeted me right away even though it was packed. I ordered the fried rice. Food: generic. - The Shu Mai came so fast, before the tea was served, and it's lukewarm. - Shrimp dumpling is ok - tofu skin roll, uncut and looks old - chicken feet are over cooked Jasmine tea is really good and I like the shape of the tea pot We ordered Hunan beef to go, which is pretty good. The staff asked us if we'd like an order of rice which is an additional $1. In general, in the past, rice was usually free, comes with a main course. Dim sum ro order all day is a dream come true. Even though we arrived 40 minutes before closing time we were allowed to eat inside, people after is weren't so lucky they had to order to go. As a native NYer who has eaten on numerous authentic dim sum places this is a great place in Florida. Shrimp dumplings are an A, the wrapper could have been a little bit thinner. Fried shrimp balls are an A+, crispy ribbons of fried goodness outside large stuffed juicy shrimps in the ball. I would go here just for these. Steamed dumplings are a B, couldn't distinguish the type of meat inside Stuffed eggplant are an A, good sauce and stuffing ratio. Turnip cakes are a B, slightly pasty. Rice noodles are a C, about 3 thin strips each of chicken, pork and squid, for the price there should have been more protein and it was salty. Staff was pleasant and checked on us often. Service was fast. We weren't bother by them cleaning the back of the restaurant while we ate up front. Would definitely go back and recommend if you're a dim sum lover. read more

I ordered a wide variety of dishes from their all-day dim sum, thousand-egg porridge, sweet and sour soup, Shanghai rice cakes, and roasted duck Pros: all the food tasted amazing and was so authentic. The roasted duck is incredible and it is a shame you can only get it on the weekends. The skin is so crispy and the sauce is so flavorful. The soup comes in huge portions and definitely enough to share. The all-day dum sum has a great selection and is great for people like me who like to sleep in. Cons: none! Overall, I think this is the best Chinese restaurant on Sarasota. I have already been back twice and will continue to come to grab their dim sum and duck. Wow. Searching for the meat in my life special was like searching for a needle in Pay step. I only went here because dim sum kitchen is on vacation for a month. I miss Chinese food and I thought I'd give it a try. My stirfry shrimp wood, not as flavorful as I would've expected and it was the counter of the sample was very small. The amount of mushrooms was the majority of. So because there were so little meat, I ordered special, and there might've been bye-bye the rest of all onions. I ordered the bai buns it was kind of bland. They were crumbs and food underneath my table, and under the tables around me and swept and cleaned. The place is just kind of depressing. I am in no way inspired to go back to this place, and I can't wait until them from the kitchen off the 70 in Lakewood Ranch is back from vacation because they do a great job and everything is fresh and everything is clean and the service staff are pleasant , on the ball, and one of them is happy and joyful. Yeah, I had a final death in my assessment of this place... Their prices are even higher than dim sum kitchen by a couple bucks. When I get Mongolian beef do some kitchen, they give me plenty of meat, and if I wanted to be my main meal I just add more meat and they charge me three dollars. read more

While I'm happy to see more options for Chinese food appear in the Sarasota area, this restaurant is pretty average. It's not bad, but it could definitely be a lot better. The menu is pretty standard for a Cantonese restaurant, as is the choices for dim sum. Pretty much your usual items. However, because there still isn't too much dim sum competition in the area, the prices are definitely much more expensive for pretty average food. Service was ok. There was a wait for the table, but afterwards, it was pretty good. The ambiance was solid. Definitely trending in the modern direction. Overall, if I'm already in the area, I may drop by. But definitely isn't quite on the level of restaurant where I would go out of my way for dim sum. read more

Met up with family for Sunday dim sum. My uncle who lives in Sarasota recommended this place. For a person who grew up in Hong Kong, I say they have great dim sum. Food were served fresh and warm, even the baked BBQ pork buns and the pineapple custard buns. The pineapple custard buns had pineapple pieces in them which go very well with the custard. The rice rolls with XO sauce was my favorite as well. The best thing is "All Day Dim Sum" which you can get it breakfast, lunch and dinner. I will definitely come back! read more

Dim Sum King isn't what I pictured. I expected it to be larger...and, maybe, more decorated. The restaurant is in a shopping center across from the Mall at University Town Center and in a nice area. So, I expected more for a place that named itself Dim Sum King. We have been here once for dim sum at lunch and once for Chinese food for dinner. I am used to carts bringing selections by for you to pick what you want. This is not that place. This is a small restaurant that has little ambiance. You mark on the menu what you to order. We had the basics-siu mai, har gow, fried shrimp balls and sesame balls with red bean paste. The dim sum was very good. I guess you could ask for the menu back if you wanted something else. I would ha e ordered something else but didn't bother asking for the menu. The Chinese was not very good. We had wonton noodle soup, roast pork fried rice, pan fried noodles, and something else that wasn't memorable. The meat was tough in all of the entrées. The sauces lacked flavor. I understand covid is causing staffing issues and transportation problems making it hard to get some foods. There have been plenty of good reviews so, hopefully, things will get better here. Summary: The Good: The restaurant was clean. Covid procedures were very good and made me feel safe about eating there. Dim Sum was very good-and hard to find here. Still my favorite when it comes to dim sum. Their food is superior to any in the county. However, that being said don't expect friendly courteous service. You won't get it. They offer wonderful, authentic Chinese dim sum. The chicken feet were very well prepared and not offered at most restaurants. The snow pea stems while pricey is a large portion good enough to share with the table. Other veggies are al dente and fresh. The hot and sour soup has al the traditional ingredients like tiger lily buds. Etc but slightly too thick for my taste. They offer a large selection of steamed and fried foods. If you want to take home leftovers bring your own container. I was charged 75 cents for a pint plastic container. Styrofoam is free but unsuitable for saucy foods. What a great discovery we found on our way to the airport. This place is buried in a little row of shops, so we were happy to see it pop up on Yelp. The inside is nothing special, but service was excellent. They have a regular menu with all the regular fan fare, and they also have a dim sum menu. We opted to share a wonton soup, potstickers, spring rolls and BBQ pork buns. The wonton soup may be the best I have ever had. The broth was so flavorful and their wontons were filled with both shrimp and pork. So yummy!!!!! The pork buns were super flavorful and had a dusting of cinnamon on the outside. The spring rolls were very light and airy and were just OK flavor wise. I didn't try the potstickers. We started eating before taking pictures, but all the dim sum has 3 items. we are always so anxious to eat and forget about pictures! I would highly recommend the won ton soup.
