I was craving dim sum so we came here on a Sunday morning right at 10:30 when they opened. Plenty of seating at that time. We were seated right away and they gave us a menu and paper where we checked off what we wanted. The prices here are standard. My favorite was the chicken feet. The dumplings were too doughy for me. They tasted better with the chili oil but otherwise too much plain tasting dough around it. The shu mai was really good as well. Pork spareribs were decent. Pineapple bun was good - sweet but not too overwhelming. The tripe was way too ginger-y for me. The sesame balls also missed the mark. It didn't taste fresh and was too much of just tasteless fried dough. I don't like egg tarts but my husband said they were just plain ok. My toddler didn't like them. Whoever said money can't buy you happiness is a liar. I spent 24 dollars on this spread after a very depressing day (more like weeks) and I feel about ready to conquer the world. Some could just say it's light beers in general but something about asian light beers that doesn't make you feel bloated and heavy. You have a choice of different noodle types, which I cannot remember, but I went with egg noodles. Lastly, the Roast Duck. Great amazing flavor and super tender, but I don't believe I would get again. Just way too many little bones. If this review thread for China Yuan could demonstrate one thing it would be that Yelpers in Tampa really come through for their local restaurants and write pretty thorough reviews (unlike us Northerners that leave 3-4 word reviews - just playing we're not that bad). There's not really much I could say about China Yuan that hasn't already been touch upon. TLDR: Came for the dim sum, got our fix for dim sum, it was good, the price was good. I was recommended this place by my boss actually - who I place an unreasonably high amount of trust in for food recommendations. So we came here on a rainy Saturday, bright and early when it opened - expecting there to be a good amount of traffic into the restaurant. Instead, we found ourselves seated promptly as one of the first couple of guests (drastically different than the cutthroat-linecutting-dim-sum-swashbucklers pace of NYC and New Jersey). That is not to say that this doesn't happen here, but I have yet to witness it. The dim sum items were ordered off a sheet where you select the item along with the quantity of each. That is correct - there is no berating auntie extorting you to purchase from their push cart as part of the status quo dim sum experience... sorry to disappoint. Instead, you get a pleasant staff that is eager to help and serve. However, I was able to practice some of my Cantonese when ordering dishes. Each dish, or "tapa" as I like use as a friendly comparison, came out at a decent rate, allowing us to enjoy the previous servings before being surprised by the next one (like how did it get to our table as if we didn't order it ourselves). Some of the dishes were obviously pre-made and frozen, however still held its own when it came to quality and flavor. While the chinese mustard (taste more like horseradish than mustard) came in packets, it was still a great condiment to use. We were able to enjoy the dim sum experience at our own pace without feeling rushed to get out and make room for others. I wouldn't come back here for dimsum again since there are other dimsum places that are much fresher than here. I would avoid their potato / turnip cake it tasted old & not fresh (too mushy). My family have been eating here for almost 20 years. I came back from Cali to visit and this place is still great. This is an old school Chinese restaurant, and the food is authentic. The dum sum is you normal stuff, and I recommend coconut milk pudding as a highlight item. The roasted duck, salted fish chicken fried rice, and stews are very delicious. After living in the Midwest for two years I was craving an authentic dim sum experience like those back home in Seattle. Right away there were telltale signs of authenticity: a fading sign, menus coming apart, waitstaff not giving us the time of day. I could tell we were in for a treat. We had a small group for my wife's birthday weekend brunch. Unfortunately there weren't many vegetarian options on the dim sum menu, but there were plenty on the regular dinner menu. We mixed-and-matched between entrees and dim-sum plates to put together a meal everyone was happy with. Unfortunately no cart service, but the food came out quickly once ordered. Some of my favorites included shrimp dumplings, steamed pork buns, sticky rice, and vegetable lo mein. The spicy garlic eggplant was maybe slightly undercooked, but got bonus points for bamboo shoots and wood-ear mushrooms. The shu mai were ok, but not as savory and tender as others I've had. Egg drop soup and salt and pepper tofu rounded out our meal. Their house special hot sauce was a dark, oily, wonderfully savory chili paste that I consumed several tablespoons of over the course of our meal. Amazingly, after we were all stuffed, with food left on the table, the check only came out to about $15 per person. We wanted to go to a Vietnamese restaurant that we had never tried but when we got there, it was out of business. I wish someone said something either on Google or Yelp. We knew they didn't serve dim sum at night so we ordered salt and pepper pork chops, vegetable fried rice and a combo dinner of chicken with veggies on rice with oyster sauce. It maybe took less than 5 minutes and voila! Our food was here. We started out pretty fast and it was really good. We knew we couldn't finish everything so we asked for takeout boxes, paid our bill and left. All in all, we always eat well at China Yuan. The food is delicious and plentiful. It is located in a strip mall, where parking can be an issue, especially on weekends at lunchtime. The servers seem to understand their customers, especially the English speaking ones. I just don't like the atmosphere and decor. It looks like half of a stockroom and the other half, my grandmother's dining room, which was not swept. I ordered chicken cashew today and I got a bowl of what looked like frozen cube vegetables with some tiny pieces of chicken in a sauce that tasted like cough medicine. On the first visit we ordered regular Chinese food and we particularly loved the Pan Fried Dumplings, General Tso's Chicken, and the Singapore Style Rice Noodles. We took another trip to try the dim sum and I loved it all. I highly suggest both styles of Roasted Pork Buns, Sesame Balls, and the Scallop Dumplings. The Pineapple Baked Buns were the best I have ever had at any dim sum location, so crispy on the top and soft on the inside. Loved them and still dreaming of them! The crispy pork is a combination of flavorful tender juicy pork and its crispy roasted skin. Every bite offers layers of texture and taste. We were lucky to get the last serving of the day. The steam chicken is cooked with seafood soup, our waitress made sure we are not allergic to shrimp when ordering. Very considerate! The chicken is even tenderer and juicer. The dipping sauce is made of a special kind of ginger which goes really well with the meat. I couldn't find it else where. We ordered dry fried green beans as well.
