It's Christmas Day and so of course, we ordered Chinese food. When I arrived there was a mix-up with our Dim Sum. Among other goodies, we ordered the Shrimp Balls but the person on the phone heard Shrimp Rolls. We caught the error in the car before driving away and was anticipating a struggle getting the correct dish. Instead the woman was so very gracious and not only had the kitchen quickly make us the right dish but also did not charge us the difference--AND had us keep the Shrimp rolls too! Came here today for lunch. Overall we are happy with their food and service. My daughter ordered pork fried rice, one of our fave at the old Tom's, and she loved it. I like the fact that they have much larger selections of dimsum dishes. The shumais and shrimp dumplings are much better than their arch nemesis couple doors down. We'll be back. read more

Dim Sum Mania is a really nice, clean and has a great atmosphere. The waiters are really nice and the service is pretty fast. My daughter and her friends (16 and 17 year olds) went here for dinner tonight. I understand sometimes teenagers can not be the best customers but in their defense they all know how to act, most of them have parents who are in the service Industry and know how to leave a good tip!! They sat down and the server was immediately rude to them. But it got worse at bill time. They bill was about $64, they put $70 in the folder. Their plan was to leave the tip on the table. The server counted it in front of them ( RUDE)) then said :seriously that is all the tip you are gonna leave" their response was "no, we need change from that then we planned on leaving the tip on the table" the server walked away so rude and said to another employee "can you believe they weren't gonna tip" They messed with the wrong group of teenagers They actually tip well over the suggested 20%. Needless to say I will tell everyone I know to avoid this resturant. read more

If I could give 0 star, I would. The service was really terrible and slow. We ordered take-out, which took me almost 10 mins to order cuz the person was not familiar with the menu and doesn't understand my needs. My order wasn't ready when I arrived. It was 30 minutes! 30 MINUTES! They told me it's only gonna take 15 mins. The shanghai shumai I ordered was super dried, the chicken with sticky rice in lotus leaf smelled weird and tasted like it's not fresh, and scallion pancake, the one disappointed me the most, was super thick, tasteless and oily. I'm glad that I tried out this new place so my friends don't have to go thru all these, but I'm good with going back to the real Tom's cuz they honestly have better service and food. Arrived at 845, had a decent meal that was ruined by the staff bleaching the floor by 945 when their hours say open until 1030. There were about five tables still left at the time that all quicky cleared out because of the bleaching. Reduce your hours if you want to close sooner, don't chase people out of your restaurant. Have been a regular customer of the original Tom's Dim Sum so I thought I would try the breakaway Dim Sum Mania next door. I had the roast pork noodle soup. The broth was okay. The depth of flavor could have been better and it was a bit oily. The noodles were fantastic. No question. But the bits of sliced pork alternated between too tough and too fatty. Most disappointing was the lack of bok choy. I love the perfectly tender bok choy you get in the soup from original Tom's. Overall I was disappointed in this soup juxtaposed against the roast pork noodle soup from the original Tom's Dim Sum. My partner had the Beef Chow Fun. Something he usually gets at the original Tom's. The noodles were excellent and overall it was very enjoyable. The criticism was portion. Quite small. Also ordered spicy pork dumplings. They come 3 to an order and they are quite large. Spice is a difficult thing to quantify but these were definitely hot. They weren't something I would order again. I definitely did not like the atmospherics. The restaurant is a modern industrial design with zero sound proofing. A big open ceiling. The noise level was overpowering and the place was only half full. I found it difficult to have a conversation. That alone would make me not go back. Overall the meal was good but I'm sticking with the original Tom's for flavor and ambience. read more

It was our second and last try with this place. Nothing much changed accept of service which was nice and quick. Even too quick to believe we were eating FRESHLY prepared food and not some reheated or kept warm for too long to taste fresh dishes. The dumplings were plain awful looked and tasted dry, the Shanghai shao mai tasted a bit better but were so under stuffed with filling they were looking like wilted flowers, Shanghai noodle was just OK and was looking and tasting identical to Lo Mein, and the only "saving grace" to another bad experience was XLB which were at least hot enough and juicy. LOVE this place! Been craving Dim Sum ever since our favorite place in Chinatown closed (after going there for idk - 30+ years) so my sister suggested we try Dim Sum Mania. So glad we did, it was awesome! It was actually better than going to the city because everything was made to order and piping hot, no soggy items circling the room here. Having 6 people in our party we were able to order a lot of food, basically we wanted to try all our "usual" things. I think my favorite was the turnip cake. It was crispy, hot and so delicious! The shumai's and har gao (ha cao?) were big and perfect (2 biters), steamed shrimp roll was delightful and bao buns were great too. The soup dumplings were amazing of course. Also ordered beef chow fun with Chinese broccoli and honestly we weren't sure what to expect because we loved it at our old place - it was SO good! Oh, I can't forget the sesame balls, yum! No skimping on sweet bean paste there, hot and crispy. I have to mention that the service was on point too. You must go here but don't confuse it with the other place (that was practically empty when we walked by). Dim Sum Mania is now a favorite of ours and we can't wait to go back! read more

Ridiculously bad pickup experience. Placed an order online and it said it would be ready in 45 minutes. I get there after 45 min and they tell me another 30 minutes. Thats is an hour and 15 to get my reasonably small dumpling order together. If they are running behind they are supposed to call. Now i have to wait in the restaurant for 25 more minutes. Came here for dinner on a Sunday night and immediately seated. Ordered pork soup dumplings which were incredible. We also had general tso's chicken which was perfectly cooked and sauce was very tasty. Lastly we had the bok choy and eggplant in garlic sauce- both came out hot and were very, very good. My review is for their dumplings-- when I want xiao long bao (aka soup dumplings) this is THE place. Tom is DA man when it comes to perfect dumplings- they are as good as the ones I've had in NYC (and Shanghai for that matter). For these special dumplings, it's all about marrying as thin of a freshly-rolled dough wrapper as possible to make it silky and extensible enough to contain the molten hot meat juices that are the "soup"-- but not tear when you gently pick it up with your chopsticks. Tom is the owner of this place and was the ORIGINAL chef and xiao long bao master of its next-door rival that ironically still bears his name. The space is large with a huge-screen tv and feels noisy with an open, minimalist/industrial decor that is super casual. I don't love the vibe, but I'll be back for the dumplings for sure. Their Shanghainese stir fried rice cake noodles and stir-fried vegetables (bok choy etc) are also great. read more

This was my Boyfriends and my favorite place, we would go here almost every single weekend and order from here very often. We love the food and never had issues with the service. One day we went in expecting it to be a normal dinner like the many other times we ate here. We were shocked at how we were treated. We sat there waiting while tables that were seated after us quickly had their orders taken and were served. It was only after 25 minutes that we spoke up and our orders were only then very rudely taken. We then waited for close to an hour for our food, our drinks were not even brought out. It was then that I decied to speak up again this time asking why we were being treated like this. We were brushed off without so much as an apology. It was very visible that our treatment was due to our age. We are 16 and 17 yet we are polite and always have tipped more then well. Great service as soon as you sit down. A pot of tea, a huge menu and a glass of water to start. The waitperson gives you time to go over the expansive menu and you order. Shanghai Pork Soup Dumplings for starters. Delicious. Be sure to poke the side and careful of the very hot soup. Next, pan fried chicken dumplings. The best I have had in decades. Steamed dumplings Chowzhou style. Out of this world. We ordered seven dishes. Each one as good or better then the one before. It's BYOB, but they have a choice of soft drinks on the menu. As a Chinese, I find the taste of this restaurant is mediocre. The claimed hand-made noodle is actually machine-made. Other Chinese dishes have average quality at best. If you really like dim sum, I suggest that you go to Dim Sum Garden in Philly Chinatown, which has much better quality than this one. read more

I told the woman taking my order about the past mistakes, and she said she would check to make sure it was right. Decide to stop by this new dim sum place after being recommended by a friend. The interior is nice and clean. They have a wide selection of dim sum and chinese dishes on their menu which was great. The turnip cakes were good but the Shanghai shumai was very dry as well as the lotus sticky rice. Seems like some of the dishes are frozen. Dim Sum Mania is not affiliated with Tom's Dim Sum (neither the philly nor the media location) although it seems like they're trying to tell people they are. Tom's Dim Sum Mania opened a couple months ago and I finally got a chance to try it out yesterday. Ordered Wonton soup, Crystal dumplings, Shrimp rice roll, and Roasted duck. It was all done really well and tasted fresh. The soup was perfectly seasoned with just the right amount of cilantro. The noodles tasted freshly made. The dumplings were super tasty. Even my picky 8 year old was enamored. The shrimp rice rolls were perfect and not too doughy or deficient in meat, probably the best I've had. The duck was fabulously juicy and lightly seasoned to make the flavor pop. I look forward to being a regular customer here and hope this level of quality can be maintained over the long run. Seeing as there are at least 5 choices of Chinese cuisine on State Street (and 3 on this block alone) I'd say the competition is fierce. read more
