I fell for the same ploy of the $60 package which is supposed to include a partial highlight, a haircut, deep conditioning treatment and a cut. Huh, as soon as I got in there, I got a weird vibe. First of all the guy took my hair down and then looked through it and said I need to get the full head of highlights. I explained to him that I only wanted to get the package deal, since I had never been there ( and to be quite honest I was already getting a sketchy vibe and didn't want them doing too much to my hair). The girl who ended up doing my hair and started putting in the foils and I explained that I just wanted the package deal, she got all upset and flustered and said 'fine, it's not going to look good, but I will give you the package that you want'. Since I was ready to get the hell out of there, she was able to convince me to not get the deep conditioning or blowdry this time- and that I could use it the next time. I let her attempt to give me a haircut, I honestly could have gotten a better cut by pulling my hair over my shoulders and chopping a few inches myself. I could not believe that on a 25 degree evening they would allow a customer to walk out of the salon with wet hair, my regular hair stylist would have insisted I get that done. But since the girl was really pushing me to do that some other time, I decided I would rather walk home with the wet hair then stay there for another minute. Needless to say, even though I am still owed a blowdry and conditioning there , I won't be going back for that. I also want to point out that they said they charge $160 for a half of head of highlights, but they would give me a special deal of $95-ummm how is that a deal if I have paid $60, plus $15 first time customer fee (umm who does that?!), and then another $95, that would be $170 how the eff is that a deal?!?! I have been to several salons in Chelsea over the last 15 years, and I keep coming back to Lisa! She always does exactly what I ask, is super nice, and I have never been disappointed. I can't help but notice that most of the negative reviewers here were there with a cheap promotion they had, and maybe they didn't get great service because of that (which is not smart of Dima!) but I can say that Lisa has always been great and I will continue to have her do my hair! read more

This is the worst salon I've ever been to. Just like all of the other bad reviews on this site said, I was suckered into the package deal. I only had to pay 40 bucks, but it ended up being full price after the service fee. What the fuck is a service fee? I'm upset at myself for tipping the guy afterwards. I guess I'm just too nice for New York. The guy who did my hair didn't say a WORD to me. Not one word. He did an awful job with the shampoo, getting shampoo in one of my eyes. He had no idea what I was talking about when I asked for a pixie cut. He just did what he wanted. All that I'm going to say is...there is a REASON why they have to get people to sell package deals on the street for them. Dmitriy is simply the best. My hair grows densely and is extrememly curly, dry and thick. This is a stylist who knows exactly how to take that hair and tame it into a gorgeous and flattering cut. I've beed going to Dima for about 5 years and Dmitriy is very fair in his pricing, and has honored his original (not cheap but REASONABLE) price. Dmitriy has also been able to help me stay current. He's never pushy about styling, but I know he is an artist, so I often just ask him to "do what he thinks is best" and he has never steered me wrong. In fact those are the times I end up looking my very best. The first time Dmitriy cut my hair I was terrified, he seemed very chatty and seemed to be paying zero attention to my hair. Not until he blew it out could I see that that's just his way. The haircut was phenomenal. It's the process of someone so familiar with his work that it's second nature. Lisa has cut my hair too and she is also an excellent stylist. I've never had any trouble getting an appointment with Dmitriy so it's only happened once. I do however get to see her handiwork every time I am there, and the smiling faces of her gorgeously coiffed clients as they leave her chair! I joined Yelp just so I could warn others not to go to this Salon. I fell for one of those $60 promotions (which is closer to $80 when all is said and done) which promised all these extras like a scalp message, image consultation, etc. What I got was a fast, terrible haircut from one very pissed off stylist. He took his anger out on my scalp, working at such a fast pace I think the actual haircut took only 15 minuets. I realized I might be in for a rough time when I walked into the dingy, tiny salon and tried to keep the cut simple. He gave me rough layers and a side swoosh bang that keeps falling in my face. It was bad enough for me to run home and sheepishly make an appointment at my regular salon to fix the damage. This promotion is a rip off - a very expensive lesson to learn. If I could give this place negative stars, I would. The next time one of those salon promoters tries to corner you on the street - run away! read more

Not only was this the worst haircut I've ever gotten, but it was the worst overall salon experience by far. I am ashamed to say that I got persuaded into the $65 advertising ploy for the introductory package. It sounded like a good idea at the time, although I should have known that if the salon was any good they probably wouldn't need to hire an advertising agency to get clients. I have never posted a review on Yelp before, but I felt that an experience this bad needed to be shared before others make the same mistake that I did. The actual salon seemed normal and clean. But it was the customer service that really shocked me. First of all, I am not convinced that the "12 foils" they offer in the introductory package is real- my stylist spent the first 10 minutes of my visit trying to convince me to purchase full head highlights, lowlights, and overall color. When I said I was only interested in the services that were included in the package I had already paid for, he decided to skip the color altogether. I got the "deep conditioning treatment" which was nothing more than a regular conditioner from what I could tell. Then came the worst part- the haircut. I normally always ask for long layers, but this guy was not having it. He kept telling me over and over again that I should get shorter layers because the long ones don't look good on me. I explained that some stylists have given me shorter layers in the past but that my hair is too frizzy and the short layers just make it look puffy. It has taken me years to grow my hair out so that the layers are just the right length. Well all of this apparently went in one ear and out the other because the next thing I know, my stylist is chopping off inches of my hair when all I asked for was a trim. I tried to stop him multiple times during the cut, and each time he responded by arguing with me and telling me that I was wrong. Call me crazy, but I thought the goal of a hair salon was to satisfy your customers, not to treat them with disrespect and give them the exact opposite of what they ask for. I am disgusted that I actually paid money to have my haircut destroyed by a man who appears to have no training and no sense of common decency. I will never in my life go back to this salon again, and if I ever see the man who did this to me again, I will have some choice words to share with him. read more

i am shocked that this place even has 3 stars. dima must have asked his friends or employees to leave those 4 star ratings. i rarely bother to write reviews unless a place a realllly amazing or really terrible. unfortunately for me, dima salon is the later. i too was a sucker and bought one of those packages for $65 (+$15 once you're at the salon) that buys you cut, color, shampoo, blow out, etc etc. i should have known better. in my gut i knew it was a bad idea after i did it. but i had needed a new salon in NYC so..shit happens. anyway, i came in for my appoint. after work at 6;30ish and id only have time to do the cut/color and said id come back another time for the rest of the services. the girl doing my color convinced me that the 12 foil highlights were not enough..in all fairness this was true. i have a lot of hair, so she convinces me to upgrade to a full head. i wouldn't mind paying extra but no joke, I LEFT THE SALON LOOKING LIKE I DID NOT EVEN HAVE MY HAIR COLORED. TWO OF MY BEST FRIENDS DID NOT BELIEVE ME THAT I HAD HAD GOTTEN HIGHLIGHTS EARLIER THAT WEEK. they asked why i didn't go back and ask dima & co to fix it. to be honest, i don't even want to step foot in that salon ever again. i don't think ill return for the rest of package. i think ill find a new salon and cut my losses. also, the icing on the cake: they wouldn't let me put tip on my credit card.DIMA, ITS 2010. I have searched the city for years looking for a stylist that could give my thick, wavy hair the perfect long layers. After visiting many of the "top" salons and paying much higher prices elsewhere, I finally found my match with Mala at Dima Salon. She is highly professional, always listens carefully to what I want and then offers suggestions so I never walk out with exactly the same cut twice. The cash-only tip policy is a mild nuisance, but many small salons operate this way. I have also had some minor issues with the front desk when the owner is not there. This salon does not offer a "spa" experience, so if you are expecting to be served cocktails, this isn't the place. However, I always feel relaxed knowing I will get a great cut here. Mala has been cutting my hair for over a year now and I will keep going back- I would choose a great haircut over a glass of wine any day. read more

Okay, I am so relieved to see other "I-got suckered-into-their-promotional-package" ladies on here, because I felt so alone! So not worth it! If you are out there and bought the package and have yet to go in, save the extra $30 you are going to spend ($15 product fee and tip- Cash only!) and just count the $60 as a loss because you will spend much more going to get your hair fixed afterwards. Long story short, my hair is curly, they swore up and down that they "specialize in curly hair" (it was even written on the board out front). I made a big deal about stressing that to them because I've had bad experiences in the past....and lo and behold I walk away with two blunt layers on my curly head, basically two different hair lengths. He cut my hair wet, and then bluntly cut the ends...really? If I wanted that I would go to Hair Cuttery. This was after I had the same experience as the ladies below, where my stylist tried to sell me a big color and highlight package, asked me what I wanted and then disregarded, showed up late (I was the only one in the salon besides the receptionist for 15 minutes...at 4pm! I should have known then.), and burned my scalp twice with the blow dryer. This is my first negative yelp review, and I'm sorry to give it. Dima is a clean place, but needs to get their act together with how they treat their customers and the level of talent they hire. Definitely won't go back, even to fix my cut that they botched. I am so furious. Last summer i got hounded by a team on the street selling an introductory offer for a "package" of services at Dima Salon. I thought it was a good value $65.00 prepaid. I hate this place. End of story. This is my first review on yelp, yet I've been using and reading reviews on yelp for a LONG time. It's sad to say but I agree with all the reviews written under the "filtered comments" link. As with most of us, I fell for the $65 dollar package deal. Really, I didn't care much for the package, I really was just in need of a haircut and I also wanted a change from my regular in queens since it's a little too far for me. WHAT A MISTAKE. This is how my experience went : I got there 15 mins early for my appointment only to find out that I'd have to wait 30 mins before my "stylist" got there. During my 30 mins wait I decided to goggle Dima hair salon to see what i was getting into. So before he even got there, I was already prepared for him to push the "$95 one time" hair color deal on me that would apparently make my hair color more even (my hair is dark brown / black... I can even it out my self with a box). I didn't even bother to ask for the face mask treatment or the 12 foils of free highlights. Did not trust them for it, and I think they would have talked me out of it anyway. He continued to press me for the $95 hair color so I told him I was in a rush and had no time and that I'd do it at another time. I did not want to take my $65 wasted as a loss. I wanted to get my hair cut and get out. So I allowed them to do just that. But even that was bad. While washing my hair , he didn't even bother to ask how the water felt on my head, he massaged my scalp way too hard, and proceeded to chop my waist long hair off without even telling me what exactly he was doing. Good thing i'm not too picky with my hair but it's sad that I had to ask mid way "so what are you doing to my hair ? Layers?" and the response was "yes". That's all. Blow dry: didn't ask how I wanted it styled. He just started to straighten and put outward curves on the bottom. I told him I didn't like it, that I hate my hair flat and then he tried to say that asking for my hair to be blow-dried with more volume was not part of the package and it would cost more. WHAT!? I told him that was ridiculous and that I've NEVER heard that before. Then he said " well MY STYLE is straight hair and MY STYLE is layers" WTF does that mean? Your style!?!? It's MY HAIR!!!!!!! Finally he gave in and TRIED to give my wimpy Hairdo some volume while complaining and telling me that my hair is too heavy and straight and it's too humid out and it won't last long. " the blow dry was a complete and total failure. I do it better myself. Although the cut was okay, it's definitely not worth the $65 + $15 product use fee... ( and what were the products used on my hair? Pantene? I don't even know. He didn't bother to tell me". I was told this place is for celebrities and I could bring my gf's here for cocktails and a good time. Yeah right. Never again. I'll stay in queens. I first went to Dima because I had a voucher. I got a solid haircut there from Ezequiel--though I was also a little bothered that he did not wash his hands after finishing the meal he was eating and before turning to my haircut. On my second appointment, I waited10 minutes past the appointment time, only to be told that it would be another 20 minutes until my haircut. The stylist suggested I make another appointment for later in the day, as if my own schedule was infinitely flexible. I'm willing to put up with a bit of delay, but this was inexcusable. My time had been wasted by the salon's bad scheduling and I will not return. There are a lot of other salons in the neighborhood. read more

The best salon I've been to in New York. Particularly if you have curly hair. Dmitriy is excellent - I've gone to him for the last four years, and everyone who has tried him has loved their haircut and kept going back. He has a unique style that straightens out extememly curly/unmanageable hair. This was by far the worst haircut I have ever gotten in my entire life!! I have had better hair cuts at quick cuts- my Mom has even given me better hair cuts. The stylist didn't introduce himself and barely spoke to me the whole time. No one offered me a drink. I thought it was standard do get a glass of wine or at least water at a salon in New York. They messed up the angles in my hair so badly I don't even know if it can be fixed. I will likely have to wear my hair half up half down for the next 2 months. As my roommate put it I look like and irish setter. the angles are very choppy and go up very short. I tried explaining to the stylist I normally have side swept bangs and part my hair on the right, and I hadn't gotten my hair cut in several months so the bangs grew out. He completely disregarded my request. He gave me a blow out where my hair curled under my chin in a very odd way that I would never wear my hair. Then I told him I wanted it straight and wanted side swept bangs and gave me serious attitude. The main reason I went was because I had an introductory offer card, but even at the price I paid it was a huge waste of time and money, and I am left with a horrific hair cut. read more

I do not recommend this place. The stylist are not friendly and really try hard to convince you to spend more for various things. I only went for the introductory package ($60), which came with 12 foils of highlights, cut and shampoo. Apparently, this amount of highlights is only enough for your bangs, they say, and you really need partial highlights which cost an additional $95. Surprise! They continued to tell me how my color does not look good and the partial highlights will take care of that, which was kind of insulting. On top of this hard sales pitch and attitude after I did not give in, the stylist was very rough and to the point of painful. Then, the shampoo guy wears black latex gloves and is also very rough, so alot of hair got pulled out and it was a painful experience. The "scalp massage" was teeth gritting and horrible. Not enjoyable. When the stylist was done, he didnt even ask if I liked it or was happy. He gave me a mirror and continued to preach to me about how you should get your hair cut every 3 months...with an attitude, then was done. He was not friendly and had an attitude the entire time. The whole staff (mostly men) walk around like they are mad at the world and the "introductory offer" for $60 is nothing more than a way to get you in the door when they then try to convince you that you need all this additional stuff. The atmosphere (very hot in there..summer..not comfortable) and staff were not nice. My hair turned out decent (highlights I mean), even though I went against their wishes and settled with the 12 foils, so that is the only good thing about the 2 hours (miserable) I spent in this salon. The styling job was not that great though, which was a bummer because I had plans to go out afterwards with awesome looking hair! Definitely the worst hair salon experience I have ever had. There was one nice guy in there, who brought me water, smiled, and was all together normal and pleasant. Summary: do not go here. Go somewhere where they value customer service. read more
