I had the most incredible experience at this salon. I have very long hair and for the last ten years I have always cherished that length and refused to get any trim longer than 1/2 an inch even though multiple people told me that most of my ends were dead. The result was long lifeless hair that I ended up hating wearing down. That all changed when I sat in Michael's chair in Tortola Salon. I came in wanting a total overhaul with my hairstyle and color and right away I felt comfortable with the recommendations and vision that Michael presented to me. He was honest in telling me that at least 3 inches of my hair needed to be cut, and assured me that with the right cut and color he could compliment my hair to my facial structure. I proceeded to get a highlight style in the form of Balayage after showing Michael multiple pictures online of styles I always admired but never taught I could pull off. The end result was miraculous. The color was absolutely perfect and the even though the hair was a little longer than shoulder length, with the perfect layers and cut it felt as if this hairstyle was what I always meant to have. It felt very natural and I can't stop showing off my new look! I whole heartedly recommend this salon. Jo is a Master Colorist - I highly recommend him. I went to a different Salon and when I told the colorist I wanted natural red highlights, I walked out with Magenta strips in my hair. My friend told me not to worry - Jo can help me. Jo is a miracle worker. He worked with me and said we would decide together what the best option was for my hair. Which was so refreshing to hear; he showed me colors and explained the process of what he was going to do. A couple of steps later and my hair color has never looked better. I had a really great experience. I went here because I have several co-workers who frequent this as their main salon and it's close to work. I felt the need for drastic change - bored with my long locks, I aspired for a shorter, more professional 'do - but one that still looked feminine. I could see his eyes get wide when I desribed what I wanted, but there was a dialogue - he gave me his thoughts, I told him mine, and we found a middle ground. The result was a great haircut that I can manage to easily blow out on my own (and it still looks pretty damn good, barring humidity). I appreciated that he didn't go off and do his own thing and he listened to me but wasn't afraid to tell me when he thought I was drastically off. He didn't try to push any of their products on me - just told me I should get hot rollers, if I didn't already, to avoid blowing out with a round brush to achieve the same effect. My haircut with wash and blowout was about $80 - w/tip, it came out to around $100. Pretty standard for a decent haircut in this city. read more

I used to go to a fancy E. 57 Street salon where I never felt comfortable & where I was only half satisfied with my stylist and paid a fortune for the experience. One day I saw a woman who had hair like mine (stick straight and fine) and had a fantastic cut with " artichoke bangs", (this was the 80's). The first time I walked into the Chambers Street salon, I immediately knew I was home. This is a salon where every stylist and colorist is highly skilled and the atmosphere is friendly and supportive. Since that day I have never looked back. Tom and Jo are the perfect combination of wise rabbi and best friend. When I come in with pictures of crazy hairdos ( I'm always reaching for what my hair can't give me), they give me a reality check then send me out the door with gorgeous color and a fabulous cut. The salon is bright, pleasant and low key and service oriented...which makes it a stress free experience. Terri really knows her stuff and I always come out with the most gorgeous hair color....particularly for light blonde hair. the salon was clean, trendy in atmosphere and had excellent staff/service. i made an appt through vive for a blowout and when i came into the salon i was greeted with a warm smile that seemed genuine! considering the tribeca neighborhood i didnt expect it! i had michael and he was so nice. we had great convo and he made my hair look awesome. he did a wavy look that was able to withstand the heat and humidity through the rest of the night and even through the next day! really enjoyed coming to tortola and hope to come back again! read more

Tortola Salon is a really welcoming, large, open and inviting salon. I see Mia for color and Delisa for cuts and blowouts. I have been going to Mia for almost 10 years and cannot say enough about her talent. Mia is truly a color genius. I have fine hair but a lot of it and it's curly. My hair is sensitive to color and she really takes the most amazing care of it. I always leave with natural looking blonde highlights and she covers the gray without it looking orange or too warm. Mia is gorgeous and funny and is a fantastic listener. I'm so glad she is at Tortola because I feel really comfortable there. If you are looking for a cut and blow out, Delisa is awesome! Went here after reading the great reviews, and while the price was in fact decent for the area, I was terribly dissappointed. I got non-bleach highlights earlier this week, and after three shampoos, my hair still reeks of chemicals, which is not something I've ever experienced from another salon. Also, I asked for an inch off my hair and got 3+ (know it's weird but took a lock home and measured when I saw how long it was) which I'm dealing with cause I had really put off a haircut, but that would be totally unacceptable to most people. Finally, the blow out was no better than what I can do. The only reason this is getting two stars is because the place was clean and Alesia was at least pleasant. I was visiting from Boston to NYC for a wedding and was looking for a salon that could take me for a last minute appointment for an up-do. Tortola was near my hotel, was reasonably priced, and could accommodate me. Michael was great...very personable, very good at suggestions for the type of up-do that would work for me, and did a fabulous job! Also, I very much enjoyed the hair wash/massage...very thorough and relaxing. I'm sorry that this salon isn't in Boston (boo hoo for me) but I highly recommend it for locals or visitors. I was in search of a new hairstylist and was lucky enough to come across Michael. My curls aren't always easy, but he gave me an awesome cut and the curls are falling perfectly. I received compliments on my hair, but they thought that I was using a curling iron or something. No, it's naturally falling into place! Colorist, Mia at Tortola Salon is by far the best color I have ever received. She is extremely detail oriented, attentive, funny, edgy and sweet! My experience with Mia was superb! No matter how long you've been going to Tortola, they always begin by asking you about your hair, what's working and what's not, and then they make suggestions, helping you clarify what you really want your hair to look like. They've guided me successfully through short and long hair styles and through changing colors. What's important to me is that Tom's hair cuts grow out gracefully, and Jo's color always looks natural. In addition, the salon vibe is positive and low key. You're in Tribeca but it's not a show. The prices are reasonable and everyone who works there is genuinely friendly. Awful experience with Terri. I went in to get a haircut with baylage highlights. During the consultation, I told her what I wanted and what I was looking for and then she asked me how to do her job basically. I simply told her I wanted the current highlights I had, which were baylage, and I wanted them to be touched up and for her to add in a few more throughout my hair, looking as naturally as possible. She had a very simple framework to follow, establish as this was supposed to be a touch up. She proceeded to overwhelm me with 10 different ways she could do it, and I asked her whatever she thought would be most natural. Then she said it was my job to tell her how, to which I responded, "I am looking to you as the professional to know how to do what I am asking as the client." Then I said, this is giving me too much anxiety and stress so we skipped the baylage and I got as simple of a haircut as possible for $90. Awesome. I have been going to Tortola salon for two years and could not be happier. Michael is a fabulous stylist - he has helped tone down years of over-processing my blonde hair and in the process my hair has become longer and healthier than ever. He frequently suggests ways to care for my hair that would save me money (i.e. only doing partial highlights, balayage, etc...), which I find to be incredibly genuine and rare. Michael is so kind-hearted and funny; I always know I will leave Tortola with a smile on my face. I've been going here for many years (probably around 20, but I'm afraid to do the actual math). It's really the only place I'd go to get my hair cut! What I like so much about Tortola is that while it's classy and nice, there's no attitude from anyone there. The whole experience is totally pleasant from start to finish. The receptionists are really nice and tend to stay for a while so you get to know them. Like the previous reviewer said, 'once you go here, you become a regular.' And I think the prices are really reasonable. I suspect a hair cut at a similar type salon in midtown would cost 2x as much. I see Tom (co-owner) for hair cuts. He always does a great job, and it's just a lot of fun to go and see him. Sometimes I flake out and go too long between hair cuts, but Tom always forgives me and makes me look good again! The haircutting area is really nice. Good lighting (not flourescent) so you look good, and the chairs are arranged in a kind of square, not a line, so it's very private. I don't color but when it's time to do so, I'll do it at Tortola. My friend does her color there (on my recommendation) and she's very happy with it. Anyway, I highly recommend Tortola. read more

I have been going to Jo and Tom for cut and color for about 3.5 years. My mother has been seeing them for around 30 years. We are very loyal customers with very good reason. Tortola is a lovely salon. It's always clean, with pleasant music and simple contemporary design. It's elegant and professional, but also very relaxed and personal. The staff is really skilled and friendly, and the books are always filled with regular clients, because once you go here, you become a regular. Jo and Tom are the owners and you couldn't possibly meet two sweeter, more fun, enjoyable people to be around. They are good at what they do and I never leave unsatisfied. We have a good time and they are very careful to make sure I achieve my goals in terms of length and color. They are responsive and creative and just an overall joy to do business with.
