This salon is a gem hidden in west village. Intimate setting and cute greenery decor with an amazingly friendly staff. I absolutely love the vibes of this salon. I've been coming here for years and I absolute love my stylist Yuri. Whether it's color or cut, if you tell her what you envision she'll definitely make it happen! I've gone from dark to blonde, blonde to Pink, Pink to Ash Gray and blonde back to dark! The color is always on point. She's an very experienced colorist. I also love that she is very personal and social. Never any awkwardness and we always have something to talk about. It's always such a pleasant experience. Importantly they only use premium bleach/hair dye products which is amazing because my hair never appears damaged. I'm frequently changing my hair color but the products never jeopardized the integrity of my hair. I've been to many other salons that completely destroyed my hair or made my hair orange. I had a haircut with koya teshima a month ago. He wasn't patient enough trimming my hair since I have really thick hair but don't want shorten my hair too much. He's more like a one-time stylist spending more than half of the time blowing the hair and keep asking if I have an occasion or date that night. But all I wanted was a proper haircut. I had a feeling that he does not know what he's doing there, but I did not say too much. Until recently, I really feel my hair is too thick for the summer and I went to another hair cut in town, where they found there are a few hair stuck out very long on the back. That was really funny to see. And I have to share my experience here after seeing such unprofessional haircut. It doesn't worth the time and time. read more

Avoid this place. Decided to stop in and set up an appt. the guy at the counter didn't have understand what was needed for a color and cut but set up an appt anyway. I arrived back and then another girl came up and asked me how long does it take to color and cut men's hair. It usually takes about an hour and a half. (I find this as a red flag since she is supposed to be the color expert and know). She then said I needed to come back since the appt was only for an hour and needed more time. This wouldn't have happened if the incompetent mook understood the language and new how to set up appts. I see this place not being around long especially with the system that they have for appts and colorists that are asking the customers how long it takes. Actually I did go to another salon with excellent results. Don't book clients if you cannot accommodate! If you see an issue as the owner you should have addressed it then. read more

I always go to Yuya-san who takes care of all my hair necessities. He is attentive and wants to know what you enjoy/change/dislike about your hair and he will take charge in doing what you want! She took her time figuring out my style, what I was trying to have done. During the entire process, washing, cutting, rinsing, she was patient and focused on the task at hand. Finally found my salon! I've never had a consistent stylist but Shinji & Shair is definitely the it. It's a small spot tucked away in the West Village but inside doesn't feel cramped at all - the white interior is beautiful and decoration is tasteful. It really feels like a Japanese salon the way they're so attentive and put the customer first 100%. I have very flat straight hair that had been growing out for 5 months now, and Shinji not only cut it beautifully so it became lighter and more shapely, but even curled my hair for my night out! I literally cried after my haircut, because it was so different from what I asked for... nothing like the photos I showed. Koya truly studied his hair from texture to pattern of growth to pattern of thinning and gave him the best cut I've ever seen on him - - and I've seen every cut he's had since childhood. I have been coming here for almost two years to get my hair colored and cut. Koya is the best! I first started going there when another salon did not do a good job on my color, and Koya was able to fix it and make my hair look great right away. Usually when I go, I don't even have specific requests. I just ask him to do whatever he thinks will look good, and my haircuts and color always end up looking perfect. I had my hair colored by Nana. I have super dark thick hair and while most stylists would have gone running in the other direction or attempted to bleach fry it in order to get some color going, Nana took it like a pro and things looked good, I mean REALLY good, after a few hours. What I wanted was tricky - from completely untreated hair to a bold, artsy red without it looking Ronald McDonald. She chose a balayage method (the more subtle sister of ombré) that gave me rich tones of cinnamon to dark raspberry that looks softly lit from the inside. Her color method is one that is also mindful of bleach damage and Nana took care to condition my hair thoroughly between bleach treatments. This might be a good juncture at which to mention the most luxurious shampoo chairs you'll ever experience in life, like with a plush neck cradle, head massage and all. read more

Actually, I'm very regret I made the decision coming here. I tried to change a style before Valentine's Day, and I decided to change a look to shorter hair. I used to have short hair, It's not the first time I make this change. I showed the stylist a picture of what I want my hair look like. First of all, he cut my hair at least one inch shorter than the picture shows. Second of all ,he cut my hair unevenly on left and right side. Also the edge was very straight, which my hair looks very unnatural. Yes, he tried to even the left and right side after blow dry by cutting them, and make my hair look even shorter. My stylist told me it's because my hair got bleached so it looks uneven. Well, why don't you say it at very beginning!?? And I used to have the same hairstyle on my bleached hair, nothing like this happened before. For the price, well, 100 bucks for haircut is ok, a little pricy but acceptable. But the result is not matching the price unfortunately. I just moved to new york recently and I tried to find a good stylist that I can trust in long turn. This is my first time here, and I may not come here again as the result is quite disappointed me.
