As part of a major landscaping project, we needed seventy feet of railing alongside a series of stone steps and straightaways. After considering and rejecting various cookie-cutter designs, we discovered Dustin of Dimensional Iron. Given Dustin's artistic training and his longtime collaboration with the metal sculptor Jim Kimberly, we asked him to design and build the project according to his own lights. Dustin checked in with us at every stage to make sure that his conception matched our needs. The result is stunning: a flowing, delicate, and whimsical work of art that expands one's conception of the possibilities of wrought iron. The attention to detail is exquisite, from the interwoven iron tendrils to the finely rusted finish. It is amazing to us that Dustin was able to create this lovely work on a budget that would scarcely have sufficed for a much more conventional and utilitarian railing installed by one of the larger companies. When our (20+ year old) iron fence around our pool started rotting out at the leg bottoms where they were set into the cool-deck, I thought I had to replace the fence. We got three bids. Two told us it would be upwards of $5-6K to replace it. Dustin looked at it and said he could replace it, and his cost was less than the other two. More importantly, he also said he could repair it at a fraction of the cost as most of the fence was in good shape For considerably less, John and Dustin removed the rotted leg bottoms, welded new legs on, and fastened them to the cool-deck with plates that covered the old holes, and painted to match. It is rock-solid and looks great. They did a fantastic job and from start to finish we were all on the same page. I sent out several request for quotes and Jim was exceptionally responsive. He answered several questions I had, quickly and thoroughly on a weekend. Jim's quote for turn around time was reasonable and the price seemed reasonable. I had to go with another fabricator only because the one I went with was not as busy as Jim, and I really needed this job done quickly. If it were work to be done on my own home I would have gone with Jim on an instant. Dustin came out and worked with me to design a custom railing for our front stairs that echoed a railing inside the house, and then did the initial framing on site to ensure a perfect fit. He was very flexible about how we wanted the railing mounted and adjusted the scale to better fit the space. When my mother-in-law (who recently had a stroke and is now unsteady on her feet) announced a surprise visit, Dustin arranged for a rush job on the powder coating and came on a Saturday to install it so the rail would be ready in time.
