The staff are rude, they charge even if you're not skating, the "rink" is tile floor, there's no lighting/decor. Our birthday experience was not what we expected for what we paid! -Staff was rude, the elderly couple particularly. -Food was terrible and they don't offer water, only Pepsi at a kids birthday so that all went to waste. - We had a 2 hour window for the party, the kids got to skate right away but we did not get access to our birthday party table area till 30 mins after the party started. That is the standard process. -Concession stands were also closed for 30 mins, kids were thirsty and once they opened our tables so I can decorate the area I was told we couldn't use our own cups, couldn't hang a banner. They had their own decorations up and wanted us to use that. For a party of 10 we only got 1 pizza which was gross, a pitcher of soda, and 10 ice cream cups. -Kids played laser tag but the scoring system wasn't working so no real idea who won. - I've had birthday parties at many different locations and this place was interesting how they took all the presents, decorations, and held them in the office for 30 mins before they gave us access to the party area. The lady was looking in my decoration box and that's how she knew to tell me I couldn't use certain things. -Don't waste your money at this place. My recommendation is to go to stakeland and skate then go home, have cake & ice cream and decorate to your liking, eat good food and don't waste it on this place for a party and rude staff! read more

Our nine year old wanted her birthday party here. I'm so glad we said yes. Her and her friends had a great time. The party package included pizza, drinks and little ice cream cups (we brought cake.) She loved her name being said over the intercom and was thrilled when the lights were dimmed and the music was turned up for skating. The employees were super nice and friendly. The people at the front desk obviously do not care about their jobs. they're quick and rude to answer, and it's very unnecessary. it's a fun experience, but not fun employees. I would also like to share a story about an employee working at the laser tag corner. He was putting on me and my friends vests and giving us our guns, when he started making sexual jokes, and started grabbing our wrists roughly, asking if we "like it rough". DISGUISTING. REVOLTING. as a shy person, i froze, and i didn't even want to talk to the people up front about it, because of how rude they were to me in the beginning. 2.5/5 rating just because this is the only indoor roller skate in Anchorage. First, the parking lot is a dirt road and exterior is not well maintained. I figure the inside wouldn't be too bad, however i was mistaken. Second, no food from outside and were forced to endure pricey food - extremely salty pretzel for $3.50 and large soda (more like medium) $3.00. There's also no diet sodas and the water fountain looks questionable for lead. Third, their loaner skates are outdated from the 60s or 70s with holes on the tip and falling apart. The owner should invest on the parking lot, better lighting, and new equipment. This place has a lot of potential but our experience here was just ok. read more

I was satisfied until we went out on the floor to skate then the person watching the floor told me I need to take my hat off because it is a safety hazard. I feel like the rules should be posted for everyone maybe even on a website. So we ended up leaving and not skating. I feel like it really is not a safety hazard. I walked in. I got my rental skates. As if on cue, the lights dimmed, the disco balls lit up, and the first strains of synthesized music hit my eardrums. Could it be? Ray Parker, Jr.? I ran to the carpeted bench, tore off my Pumas and pulled on my 15+ -year old beige roller skates as quickly as I could. I didn't even tie them right. I had to get to the rink. In 1985 I spent a lot of time at Dimond Skateland rolling around the disco-ball-lit floor to the song "Ghostbusters." Now, in 2011, at 33 years old, I was doing it again. AND IT WAS MAGIC. I'm not giving this place five stars because it is the preeminent roller skating establishment in Alaska. I'm giving it five stars because it has not changed ONE IOTA since my childhood. The walls are still carpeted. They still serve Slush Puppies. They still have the same mountainy mural painted on one end of the rink. They even have a glassed-in showcase with yellowed clippings from the ADN of star speed-skaters from 1989. Unfortunate, unfortunate clothing choices there. But I digress. If you grew up in Anchorage, and you skated at Skateland - the skating rink with the giant roller skate announcing itself from the side of the highway - there is no way you can be disappointed in your experience here. We came in for my friends 22nd birthday just wanted to do something like we did when we were younger. The cost to skate is $20 now that's ridiculous especially because the music sucked and the drinks where watered down. we couldn't bring in the cake we bought because it wasn't a party booked through them. It sucks because alaska doesn't have a lot in general but when we do get something places like this jack up their prices just for the fun of it. This is a wonderful local business that has been in Anchorage for quite awhile. It really makes for a fun outing for the family, couples or just by yourself! The place is like a blast from the past and has a lot of nostalgia, reminding me of my childhood local skate rink. The place is very clean and well maintained. The rental skates aren't bad and are included in the price of admission which is pretty cheap. A word of warning. They only take cash. So be prepared. Honestly it's a great place to hang out with friends for a few hours. Sure the foods terrible, the bathroom stalls don't have doors, the shoes are uncomfy, and you have to pay extra for the laser tag and bumper cars, but there something about all the terribleness that makes it great. The kids love it and its a great bargain - 2 hours for $7 or $8 (depending on when you go). The skates are OLD OLD OLD. One pair had a hole in the toe. The laces were frayed. The boots were cracked and looked terrible. But the thing that was shocking was.....When I got my skates the boy turned around and took them off the shelf. When I was done I put my laces in the boots and set them on the counter. The boy then put them on the shelf. At no point did I see anyone disinfect them. Next time I bring a can of Lysol. I heard another person making the same observation. Totally and completely gross. So 5 stars for fun and price. But take away 3 stars for germs and condition of skates. read more

I love that they got new skates. The building is kept clean and they make this place as family friendly as possible. Staff has always been nice every time I've gone. At least for the Sunday session they don't do games anymore. I didn't ask if they have a specific day for things like the limbo, hokey pokey and racing. Oh joy, wondrous day! I thought when I learned that there's a roller skating rink close to our place with weekday skate for low admission. It seemed the perfect solution for me to get out and enjoy some winter activity that didn't involve facing the cold. First visit, great. Their music sucked (weird emo pop that didn't seem conducive to anything resembling roller fun), and their skates are probably about as old as I am, but I was having fun with friends and roller skating for the first time in over a decade. I saw some other skaters wearing headphones, so on the way out, I checked the rules, saw that they said nothing restricting headphones, and planned my return with an iPhone full of disco hits and other appropriate roller tunes. Next time, lots of fun, stayed the whole session. No problems. The same people with headphones from before were there with headphones again. And I enjoyed my Saturday Night Fever on repeat. Next time, the same. Fourth and final time, ten minutes into my visit, a young referee pulled me over, saying I couldn't wear headphones. I said it wasn't in the rules. He said it's still a rule. So, I went to the desk and asked for the manager. She said that yes, earbuds are against the rules. I asked why the refs the other nights, who had seen me with the headphones, even removing them, hadn't said or done anything and why other regulars who wore them were allowed (though I wasn't about to narc on who they were specifically). She couldn't say. I then asked which rule was I breaking? She faltered. I went back to skating. The ref stopped me again a few minutes later, saying the manager had called the owner to check on the rules. I went back to the manager, who said earbuds count under the "no headgear" rule--the examples of headgear on the rules stated hats and sunglasses, both of which are accessories. I said that's absurd. In what world is a tiny earbud headset an accessory? However, I said if they would refund my entrance fee, I would leave. I'd been there less than half an hour, mostly off rink. No refunds was the response. Ok, at this point, I was furious. My feel-good roller time was being ruined by this ridiculousness. This brought out my ugly, petulant side. I went back on the rink and finished the session with my headphones (I told the poor ref that I knew he was doing his job, but he'd have to physically throw me out or give me a refund), and I left that night never to return. This is, of course, a very singular experience. Sometimes it just feels cathartic to rant. If you can handle terrible music and random, inconsistent management because you just gotta get those skates on the rink, then this might be a fun place for you (as long as you stay away from the snack bar, for goodness sake!). read more

Up until I was 11 I went to this rink every Friday. I visited my family this summer and decided I would go back to the rink. Things were so much better when I was younger. It wasnt the amount of people or the enviroment that disappointed me but the faculty. I just couldnt believe how much things had changed. There was a woman going around YELLING at kids to do this to not do that. When I asked the guy up front a question he gave me a short answer and walked off. I thought to myself "how can you run a business treating your customers like they are a chore?". As much as I love skating, and as much as I wish I had my old rink back its just not worth the money. What a shame. The reason for my two stars and not one is because the teenage workers at the concession stand were polite and timely. Yes, they had piercings and tattoos. Quite frankly I would rather hire them than anyone else in that building if I was an undercover boss. I frequent this place with my kids and their friends. I try really hard to have a good attitude. The snack bar is a nightmare. My boyfriend ordered nachos with jalapeños. They were out of jalapeños. He asked for a pizza slice, mind you all these item he ordered were listed on their big menu over their snack area. They couldn't sell him a pizza slice because there wasn't any pizza made. My daughter ordered a strawberry slush ice and she got a cup full of red syrup with some ice chunks floating in the top. Okay, this is the third Skateland I've been to, which was for the party of my twin boys' friend. The other two are in San Antonio, Texas, where my oldest son had his 8th birthday party. Apparently they all have the same rules, sales, and layout. These three things I noticed: (1) Same kind of food served for birthday parties to include frozen pizza or hot dogs, ice cream cups, and soda. And those "Slush Puppies" that every roller skating rink seems to serve. (2) The décor is total late 1970's-early 1980's, never having been remodeled. I love it, but it's enough to make many younger people want to gag. And (3), the restrooms all have the sinks outside them for both genders. But no privacy stalls in the restrooms whatsoever! These places were constructed back in the day for efficiency and when people didn't have the privacy issues like they do now. The boots I was issued were brand new, but the ones for my 7 year old boys must have been at least 20 years old. And the rink was pure concrete and floor tile. Ouch! Not good for beginners. I'm really sorry to hear about people's bad experiences. I think a lot of their rules are ridiculous, but obviously the owners are trying to prevent preteens and teens from getting out of control. And the owners and staff didn't seem particularly friendly or inviting, but hey, it's Alaska. Many Alaskan's don't particularly like people. read more

Here's what you need to know ... if your child wants to have their birthday party there other than one of the designated birthday times, bring lots of cash, for some reason they can take credit cards during regular scheduled birthday times but not any other time. The selection of overpriced food is barely a menu and even on their busiest night they don't seem to know if they plan on preparing pizza (tastes like cardboard) by the slice .. Paid 40 dollars for a group of four to skate. Not even 10 minutes in one of our members was told to take his hat off. We explained he has a disease and needs to wear his hat and they said they would refund him. Our other friend got knocked over and hurt himself and therefore couldn't skate. So, 2/4 weren't allowed to skate and after trying to reason with the old couple in the office they declined us the 30 dollars and were very disrespectful. 10 minutes skating. 30 dollars missing. From not having what we asked to getting blasted over trying to use a card, and finally being thrown out because they think we smell like marijuana. Horrible horrible place for a birthday party. They required the party to be there 45 minutes before the party time, but wouldn't let us sit until it was our official party time started so all the guests had to stand around. The tables were already reserved and empty but they would not let us sit there. Their solution to the problem was to try to take all the presents and cake and put them in some random room. They had booked 2 other parties and didn't feel like it was a good idea to have our presents mixed up with the others. When we refused, the staff got hostile-yes, hostile about us wanting to just sit the presents down on the tables that were already reserved for us. The manager and owner came over to insult us several times throughout the event. The only reason we didn't leave was due to the kids and already paying the party fee. The building hasn't had any updates since it first opened, it looks dirty and dingy, the bathrooms have no doors on the stalls, the tiles are falling off the walls and most of the lights were turned off. I had to rent skates because they don't allow inline skates, which means we will never go back. Got barked at that my coffee drink wasn't allowed inside--which I get, as long as you sell coffee. Which you don't. Duh. Signs everywhere--don't do this, don't do that. Employees looked downright miserable. Skates were totally brokedown. The "couples" song was Lee Greenwood's God Bless the USA. C'mon man, gimme some Poison or Bon Jovi or SOMETHING! Fun for little ones; stressful for parents. It is terribly disorganized for parties. The staff does not help out nor do they have any special party fun extras that make the birthday kid feel special. After the assigned 2 hr time slot you must return your skates. It is a cash only business. No cards of any sort. Skateland does not use a POS. Everything is written on paper & outdated. The owners have obviously been skating along for decades w/o upgrading. That is unfortunate, there is potential if only they would invest is some modernization. read more

I competitively roller skated from the age of 5 to 18, I have skated in rinks all along the west coast. For years I have skated in Portland at Oaks park. We moved to Anchorage, for the first time we come here to skate. I of course have an expensive professional pair of artistic skates, my daughter the same and my partner very nice speed skates. We were literally turned away at the window, never in my life.. we were told we couldn't skate because we had black/gray toe stops. It scuffs the floor, no other rink has ever turned away business for such a thing. We are beside ourselves. If I could give it less stars I would. Just blown away. read more

We had 11 kids and were shoved to this little table between two other parties...yes, the partion on the wall came down so we could only seat 8 of the kids. The entire snack bar area was clear. I asked to speak to the owner after being told we couldn't have an additional table. HE DIDN'T CARE. We had 30 minutes at the table before they forced us off it. I asked to speak to him again and he shrugged his shoulders and said you only get 45 minutes at the table and we were not allowed to set up in the snack bar. We could sit on the sideline. I want to give it more stars, I REALLY do. The place itself is fine. It's clean, nothing broken- has bumper cars and laser tag (super fun stuff) but my daughters birthday party was NOT what I wanted it to be. Total cost was $315- which is normal for birthday parties TBH. However my party was from 2-4. Said I could come in at 1:45 for setup. Showed up but all they do is take your stuff to the back. Then you have to wait until 2:30 for a table. No one was there except one other party. They have two party sections- but still had to wait 45 minutes to do any kind of set up. Then they almost immediate brought out one pizza- you get no choice on the pizza- then 10 cups of Pepsi- again NO choice. None of these things are on the website. You can't even get cups for water- they will charge you for it. They charge for EVERY SINGLE THING. Which is okay, but I wanted cheese and def no soda (or at least a choice) they even brought out the ice cream. Wayyyy before I was ready for any of that- had them put the ice cream back so it wouldn't melt. It makes no sense to pay that much and not even be able to sit down. It's overpriced for what it does- my kid has fun- but still- it's not hard to allow people the two full hours at a table. Def wouldn't recommend and won't come for parties again. The place is fun- but no reason to make something that costs that much be that complicated. Very disappointed but glad my kid had fun.
