After several hours and other stops we made it home. We live in Baltimore Md. A short 4 hour ride away. When my wife had unpacked the food and she asked me did I eat any fish? I said No? If I had she would have killed me before the plate got cold. She said that then they (Sugar's) did not give us piece number 10. The Boss was not happy and neither was I. Now I don't mind paying for delicious food and will do again. What I do mind is paying for fish that does not appear on my plate. I felt RIPPED OFF! If someone in the back of the house can't count to ten (10) and your employing someone who doesn't know how to count to 10, I am wondering what else is going on in the back of the house. The scallops were cooked well and perhaps my only criticism is that the corn purée was better in concept than execution. I can't say enough about the staff. We were two people on a Sunday night crazy enough to dine in a downpour. The staff never made us feel like they wanted to punch out, embraced us being outside and were creative in waiting on us with umbrellas to keep the food from getting wet. It would have been understandable for them to limit the trips to check on us, but they persevered and made us feel welcome. Like too many restaurants in the Scott's Addition area, this is seafood cooked without finesse and then absolutely brutalized with absurd amounts of palate fatiguing, brash, loud flavors. Every item on the menu endeavors to conceal mediocrity in the quality and handling of the ingredients with explosive, overwhelming additives meant to shock you into submission. Things like black garlic and chili oil, raw garlic, sesame seed oil, and punishing heat are inescapable on the menu, which really says to me loud and clear "we do not understand the appeal of seafood, and might have a fundamental misunderstanding about good food in general." I don't exaggerate when I say these dishes would be improved (setting aside things like inability to properly cook octopus) by scaling back the flavors to 5-10% the loudness level they are currently at, to let the ingredients speak, and to make the dining experience less of a punishing marathon with no relief. I have had much subtler and more skillfully balanced dishes at Indian and Thai restaurants, cuisines known for strong flavor profiles. I'm through listening to these Richmond restaurants trying to excuse simply bad food by claiming "that's the nature of the cuisine." In this case, Lillian claims that dishes characterized by these cacophonous competing flavors is "South American." No it isn't - the person conceptualizing the dishes is just a bad chef who doesn't know what he's doing, and at the prices Lillian charges, that's inexcusable. Drowning every dish in flavors that overwhelm the palate is not a way to respect your ingredients or your diner, and only communicates youth and insecurity. Anyone who's eaten widely and knows their ingredients will rightly feel assaulted and insulted by this overpriced, unskilled fare. To anyone who decides to go anyway: Good luck with the digestive distress, and with the taste that will still be left over in your mouth the next morning, no matter how much you brush your teeth.

My favorite thing about good Italian food is that it's just simple things, done really well. The portions are huge, so I'll be eating leftover pasta for a few more nights this week, but I'm glad that I saved room for dessert, as we tried both the tiramisu and the cannoli and were not disappointed by either. On Saturday September 21 my sister-in-law, her sister and a friend met for dinner before heading out to listen to music. I am not a local but had heard this was a new place owned by the owners of Edo Squid and Mama Zus. Everything we ate was delcious, especially the special of the day, homemade ink squid pasta with lobster. We all shared this dish but I wished I had eaten it all on my own. All the seafood on the seafood salad was melt in your mouth yummy . The bread served to us by our attentive waitress was crusty and great for dipping in all the sauces on all the dishes. We were even able to share the perfectly cooked sauteed soft shell crab. For dessert we all tried the vanilla gelatto with espresso, whipped cream and pure perfection in a small glass. The person who contacted us first was a host or runner who brought us water and told us that a server would be with us soon. So, they already had "strike 1" in my head. Another 8-10 minutes came and went... So, we are now at over 20 minutes with no server contact. At that moment, Madeline arrives. At this point, we had decided to place our drink and food order at one time to avoid further delays. NOTE: We were not in a rush at all but expected reasonable service. Madeline took our order and (I assume) placed it with the kitchen. We waited 20-25 minutes, which was not a terrible wait time, but for a lunch of two sandwiches and a small pizza, it was not an appropriate wait time either, especially given the over 20-minute wait to even see our server. OK, so our food arrives (it is not our server delivering our food), and of all things, the most important item was wrong!! We had ordered the Pizza Piccante with NO grilled spicy pepperoncini, as the boys (3 and 5) had requested. Well, it was covered in them--I mean, covered! So, we tell the food server it was wrong, and then we wait, and we wait, and nothing! So, finally, Madeline comes by and asks if everything is alright, and we say, "No, we ordered the pizza without peppers." She said she was sorry and said that she would put the pizza order back into the kitchen. I told her, "No, we don't have the time..." The complementary bread service was excellent - warm, crusty bread with good olive oil and roasted garlic. Even with the "misses" on the food we enjoyed the evening. Rowland is great as a neighborhood restaurant but I'm undecided if we will make a special trip to go back.

We each kept a piece to eat with our entrees. The flavors in the fried olives and squash dishes were awesome. For dinner, I got the gnudi and my husband got the cavatelli. We were both so happy with our choices. We made sure to have room for dessert and the caprese cake and gelato were incredible - not too heavy but super delicious. We were also impressed with the service - they were all very friendly, cleaned our tables and refreshed our silverware between courses, and refolded our napkins if we got up to go to the bathroom. I highly recommend the patio, but you need to plan way in advance. Even on a Wednesday night. And definitely get there early because parking is a bear. I don't mind the walk, but anybody with mobility challenges, might find it tough to get there on time unless they can get dropped off. For cocktails our friends got a very swanky bottle of white wine by Cinque Terre. My husband and I got mixed drinks : the Italian stallion and the ciao fantasy. Very different experiences, but both very good. The Italian stallion was complex yet refreshing and the ciao fantasy was complex and smooth. For appetizers, we got the beef tartare and the Borlatti farro verde. Again, both very different but equally delicious. The tartar obviously more a protein forward appetizer that had a smooth richness brought out by the egg and the well chopped beef. The extra sourdough was a nice touch. The Borlatti was the perfect starter for a spring evening and I actually enjoyed it more than my entrée. It has a lightness to it, but also richly satisfying, especially with the sourdough. For the entrées, we went back to our favorites from last time which was the cavatappi and the rockfish. I enjoyed the cavatappi more but I was trying to get more protein and less simple carbs so I stuck with the rock fish. This time the fish was not a great piece and had very little edible protein because of the bloodline running down the center of it, so for $38 it felt a bit stingy because I needed more of the fish than the slightly over spiced rice and sausage. Did not feel like a good choice for the evening. I did not finish and went back to my appetizer to satisfy any hunger pains left. Definitely disappointed that there was no specials for the evening and a lot of the menu seems pretty similar to the last time we were there. Also seems like fewer choices at least for the small plates. The staff was incredibly friendly and helpful and again really enjoyed the atmosphere. However. Everything seems overpriced these days but even though prices haven't shifted that much at LL on this occasion, $172 after tax but before tip seemed a bit much for Richmond. Feels like everything is a few dollars over what the price point should be especially if it's not done to perfection. We will probably go back but not for a long while bc of price but also because of menu options. There are several restaurants in Church Hill that bring more bang for your buck.

The salads were basic but fresh and the salad dressings really good. The rolls were perfect for sopping up the sauce lol. We decided to splurge because we're not going to have any leftovers so we ordered a 12" Lilly Pad Pizza to go, and that's lunch sorted for the next couple of days. It's a white pizza with pesto and pine nuts and looks really good. Can't wait to try it! But we have to wait because we ate like little piggies. Bride ordered a limeade- made in house, wonderfully tart - and a shrimp Po'boy. It came with a whole layer of pickles and a half dozen large fried shrimp. The Cajun fries come as the standard po'boy side, and they were fried just right- not too crispy, not too greasy. Their Cajun seasoning is on point. I got sweet tea, which was fine, and a Mushroom Swiss burger which was large, delicious, and actually cooked medium as requested. I upgraded to sweet potato fries which were actually waffle fries- a nice change of pace- and the frying was great again- it's so easy to burn them because of the sugar content, but these were pretty much perfect. For dessert, we both opted for the piña colada cheesecake, a regular cheesecake with their signature rum pineapples and toasted coconut on top. Delicious! The service was excellent, the venue had a fantastic view and the vibe was delightful. The total, before tip, was $78. And the menu is online, so we're already planning what to try next time!

The eggs were fluffy, and the crispy homestyle potatoes were the perfect side. My mom ordered the Hangover Burger, and even though she normally isn't a burger person, she tore it up! The onions were beautifully caramelized, and all the flavors came together wonderfully. Great food, drinks, music, and waterfront views--I will definitely be back!
