What a great ol'fashion supper club! Took 2 years to get here and we loved it. Such a quant place. Service was great, granted there were only maybe 5 tables sat on a Thursday night off season, but extremely friendly. Rolling black leather chairs, white linen napkins and even the old silver butter melters with the candle I remember as a kid. Just a reminder, they only accept reservations so make sure you call ahead. I heard rumor that they only seat about 25-30 tables a night, so get in early! As for the prices, I'd say extremely reasonable for what you get. They had a simple but excellent salad bar, fresh dinner rolls and all the old side salads you would think comes with a supper club salad bar. No relish try needed, it's all up there along with cheddar cheese spread and liver pate. There were three of us and we all ordered the same thing. 5oz. Filet with shrimp. Dinner included soup as well. All for $36, I'd say that's kinda a steal! Steak was cooked perfect and everything tasted good. I wish I got there a little earlier to enjoy the bar. Definitely a 60's-70's era bar, but it was very clean and nostalgic. The bartender made probably the best old fashion I've had in a very long time. We rounded out dinner with a grasshopper after dinner ice cream cocktail. Perfect size for the three of us to share! This review is from fall of 2024 and the restaurant is currently up for sale. I said I was done with the Ding-a-Ling. I should have stuck to my word. 2/13/26 my wilf & I had made the "Required" reservation we both had the Fri Fish fry mine deepfried hers broiled. nothing bad with the salid bar. The Clam Chouder was very watery all potatoes and a sour bad taste (we did not eat). The main course arived both looked unappetising and tasted even worse. Both plates went uneaten (yes that bad). Our server Betsy did not ask if there was something wrong with our dinner. I questioned her about her lack of intrest, her responce was you probebly didn't like it, and made no effort to make it right,Betsy just did not at all, we paid the bill in full and left hungry. In contrast the next evening we had diner at White Tail Lodge in St Germain and the diner was excellent for about the same money as Ding-a-Ling. We are 100% DONE with this place! read more

I recommend having a reservation, they are very keen on that. Atmosphere: Old school supper club with odds and ends decor. Retro chairs and bar. Gravel parking lot. Bar is right when you walk in the door. Service: No one was wearing masks. I really wasn't a fan of that, especially since they were seating everyone close together. The owner was very nice, not sure what the other reviews are talking about. Food: They have the salad bar shut down for COVID, which is a good thing. They have a relish tray brought out instead. Eat the liver pate, it's amazing. The prime rib was good once you added a bunch of salt and pepper to it. The fries were crispy and hot. The walleye amondine was a bit underwhelming, but cooked well and the au gratin potatoes were under seasoned. All in all, your standard supper club. I bet you can't tell what year it is when you're in here!! When you picture in your mind what an "Up North Supper Club" would look like, this is probably pretty close. 1. Decor last updated in the early 80's? Check. 2. Super cool horseshoe shaped bar? Check 3. Salad bar containing at least three types of pickles and two types of olives? Check. 4. Fish fry On Fridays, Prime Rib on Saturday and Duck on Sunday? Check, check, and check!! 5. Condom machine in the Men's room? Yep, sure is!! I don't really understand that one. It's probably covering a hole in the wall and they don't want to take it down. Still 75¢ though, what a bargain! Well, you get the picture. Sure this place is stuck in time, but that is what makes this place so great!! They do what the do very well. Soup AND salad, liver pâté on the salad bar. Service is always great, food is solid, and the prices are very reasonable. If I lived up here, I would be a regular, clearly many of the patrons are. We were up here most recently during COVID. Other than the removal of the salad bar, you wouldn't really know it. At least the tables were spread out, although I'm guessing it was more coincidence than on purpose. Considering how little regard most places in the area have for COVID precautions, we were at least "comfortable" here. We were in the area for a wedding and love supper clubs, so how could we pass by a place called the Ding-A-Ling? Did it pass or fail my "Supper Club Rating" scale? Relish Tray: PASS Ding-A-Ling doesn't bring a relish tray but they do have a salad bar that comes with all dinners that contain all the required relish tray elements - crinkle cut carrots, bean salad, liver pate and TWO kinds of cheese dip. French Onion Soup that is mostly cheese and Bread: NEUTRAL Ding-A-Ling includes French Onion with dinners, which is odd - usually it's an upcharge. However, their version is the unadorned soup - no cheese or bread. That said, it was good and there wasn't an upcharge. Delicious Old Fashioneds: PASS Plus the bartender was fun, poured heavy, knew how to make a correct press and didn't mind when we bought a bunch of pulltabs. Classic Menu: PASS It's all here - surf and turf, steaks, chops, fish fry, etc. I ordered a steak which was perfectly tender and cooked right to medium. Dinners come with a potato choice and I opted for cheesy potato casserole, because if that's an option why WOULDN'T you get it? Experience Service: PASS Our server was great - she pushed our order in before a big group so we didn't have to wait and she was lots of fun. Retro Atmosphere: PASS They've got it all. This place may have good food, but we wouldn't know. we were rudely treated at the door by an older woman (who, after reading this reviews, is presumably the owner). We walked in a little before six on a Thursday thinking it wouldn't merit reservations. There were three open tables by the bar - didn't even look in the dining room- and the woman refused to seat us, informing us it would be hours before she could get to us due to a 14-person reservation arriving in thirty minutes. Didn't feel bad not giving her our business. I do feel bad about the staff that work there. I sent it back and the owner Betsy came to the table and argued that it was medium rare. I ordered a medium rare ribeye to replace it as the owner said all of the cuts of prime rib were the same. This is a unassuming old school northwoods supper club. It is tough to get in here for Friday fish fry and you will require a reservation in order to be seated on arrival. You will receive a three course meal consisting of the salad bar, rolls, and your choice of soups before receiving your entree and sides. I ordered the Fried Canadian Walleye and it was perfectly flaky and fried to perfection, it didn't even require me breaking out the cajun seasoning that I had brought in. They weren't too overly thrilled when 11 paying customers wanted to put tables together, in fact, refused Should have left then. One of us was served some " off" walleye and the old bitty / owner/ hostess () more or less told us tough luck. She was the most unreasonable, nasty piece of work we've run into in some time. My family has been dining here for years as a 4th of July week tradition. So I was excited to bring some friends there for dinner this year. We went there on a whim and crossed our fingers we would be able to get in. I was so embarrassed by the way the hostess treated us for not making a reservation. Apparently they were short staffed and we were pretty much turned away. The "hostess" was so rude my friend literally stood there with his mouth open. We had been going to this Supper Club for years and still love this place. We are huge fans of the traditional Wisconsin Supper Club and the unique atmosphere that can only be found in these places. If it says "Supper Club" we'll give it a shot. Ding a Ling takes you back to the what dining was like in the 50's & 60's. Thats what we want and that is why we will always go back as long as the service and food hold up. The food here is always great. One of my favorite places. There are so few of these old fashioned supper clubs around anymore and that is a damm shame. read more

I read the reviews and I'm shocked by some of the comments... We have been here many times and just returned home yesterday. We are seniors and went on a memory tour of some of our favorite places and DING A LING has always been a priority when we went to Mercer. I lot on business all over the country and have always felt that the Prime Rib here was among the best. Mercer is 370 miles from home so you know I must enjoy coming up here to make that trip at 73. Betsy and Guy are great and if you felt treated badly then you must have a superiority complex or not understand friendly actions. I do know I still have the desire to come back but will I still have the energy is going to be the question. If I don't it will be missed.... read more

Never again will we eat there, the owner is rude and the food lousy, we had a problem there 20 years ago for the same reasons I just listed, but thought we would give them another chance. I had Shrimp de Jonghe, the shrimp came swimming in butter with no bread crumbs to speak of and they didn't bother taking the tails off the shrimp so you had to put your fingers in the butter to eat them. Don't let the 1970s / 80s decor fool you. It's exactly what it looks like... old and outdated. After virtually being scolded for not having a reseravtion, I had reservations about staying. There was nothing on their website to indicate "reservations strongly suggested" or anywhere for that matter, so I don't know why the owner took that attitude.. During the hour wait not one customer walked in. About four other couples finished their meals and walked out. Their were at least eight vacant tables where we could have been seated. When they were ready for us, the owner said "Well, I guess now is as good as time as any to seat you." Well bless you, I thought. The owner was cold and rude,,, After being seated we were greeted with "We only have two steaks (the special) left and they come medium-rare. I guess you don't get a choice with their top choice steaks. They must have been precooked I thought, and heated up in a microwave. Wow. This place has changed over the years -- even if the same old decor hadn't. The two steaks we did have were flavorless. And one was overcooked. What a terrible thing to do to a steak. To add insult to injury, they charged $5 per steak to add mushrooms and onions. Yet they had no problem asking you gleefully if you wanted that with your steak -- as if it were part of the meal. This place used to have a decent salad bar... now it's a mish mosh of lettuce and toppings, with very little other sides. The potato salad was edible. And I choked it down. It's too bad that this place has changed in attitude and quality of food. It used to be a "super" supper club. Back in the 70s and 80s. Would I recommend it to others? Only as a last resort. You can do better up in the northwoods. read more
