After reading some reviews, and based on some people I've known who LOOOOVE this place, I was skeptical. But as all places that sound seedy, you find a trustworthy female friend and call it an "adventure"! Well, I was wrong. Perhaps knowing a ton of people there that night at least a little helped out, but even without the acquaintances entertaining us, we were getting a decent amount of positive attention....if that's what you're into. I expected Dirt to be a sleazy place where no one would look at me or let me order a drink, but honestly the bartenders were better than Cecil's attention-wise, and the crowd, while trendy and decorated in tattoos and droopy earlobes, was not void of people that someone as uncool as myself could approach. The drinks are mixed well. No complaints there. All in all I'd say go here with friends in case you're put off by the crowd, but go here to have fun. read more

The name speaks for it self. Drinks are reasonable. No food. It was a sausage fest when I was in there, It appears to be the type of bar. Dark booths in the corner?? Weird ?? Female bartender was nice. Make bartender was nice. It was just more business friendly. Didn't really care about you. Dude, this is a pretty good spot - if you like a GREAT dive bar and music. Staff really cool and attentive. Loss some stars because the first glass I got was dirty. But after that, everything was cool and clean. It's supposedly a legendary hangout and I hear you'll see some celebrities in here on occasion. It has a comfortable scene and I recommend going. It is near downtown too, so you can check out nearby places too. read more

I came here with a group after bowling across the street. The bartender was quick to provide drinks for everyone. Unfortunately a couple of minutes later the bartender threw pepper spray on our group. Nobody was unruly or anything. I have never experienced this before so I wasn't sure what had just happened. It took awhile in the bathroom to rinse out the pepper spray from my eyes. Given what happened I can't give this bar more than 1 star. Maybe two stars because we got a quick beer, but let's go with one star because, well we got pepper sprayed. read more

This place has a great atmosphere and a bit eccentric decor. The ceiling is very high with dim lights. The unusual decor includes the skeleton of a horse. People were happily chatting with friends. If you're 40+ years old and still have dreams of becoming the next Dave Navarro, this is the place for you! The pathetic pretentiousness of most of the regulars is just depressing. Unless you've just left House of Blues and still want to drink but Reserve 101 is full, there is really no reason to just come and hang out here. it's sad. really, really sad. However, in response to a few of the previous reviews: 1) Some people obviously don't know what 'hipsters' are, because you rarely find them here. I wanted to like this bar. I really did. It had everything going for it - the feel of a dive combined with the nice furnishings of a new bar, it's right near my house, potentially free drinks (on certain nights the bartenders will flip you a coin for them), rumors that this was an "it" place. And I guess it is an "it" place. Maybe I'm just not an "it" person, I don't know, but what I do know is that the music was essentially an unbearably loud loop of Marilyn Manson and White Zombie remixes and that all of the boys were wearing girl pants. You're going to make me use that cringe-worthy word, but yes, it was full of hipsters. And not the awesome, "Hey, let's listen to records and play with my dog" kind, but the kind with Dragon Ball Z haircuts and A Bathing Ape hoodies, and knuckle tattoos when they don't look a day over seventeen. If that sounds like you or your group of friends - go! You'd probably have a great time. But I found myself shouting "WHAT?! I CAN'T HEAR YOU!" at my friends like a crotchety old woman, and grateful that it was my lucky night and I was on a roll with the coin flips. read more

Read from several sources that the Dirt Bar was one of the best Houston bars to find a hook-up. I went on a Saturday night and hung around for a while. It maintained a male to female ratio of 8 to 1. You could look around and see 3 guys trying to hit on one girl at the same time, none of whom, I think, knew each other. Was in town for a work conference and stumbled upon this bar while walking around the city. This was the ultimate dive bar, no frills just a good time. The bartender was the sweetest - wrote a list of restaurants and bars for us in the city without us even asking. Ended up coming back here a couple times throughout our stay. Seems busiest when there is a show/event at the HOB down the street because the first night we came we were about the only people in the bar. I actually really liked this place...I went on a Tuesday and it was pretty good crowd in there, I like the whole flip coin thing. It's a big place with two rooms and some sliding doors that separate the big room from the smaller one. However, what I didn't like about my visit here was that I had gone to the restroom in the smaller room and when I came back and tried to join my group in the bigger room again, the big...round..bouncer, who had begun commanding at the sliding doors, would not let me back in...he said it was too crowded and I'd have to wait. Ok there's a few things wrong with that. 1) it wasn't too crowded AT ALL. 2) you're telling me i have to wait in line to get into a bar called DIRT BAR? What are we in Mid-town's hottest new trendy club? 3)I'm already inside! I just wanna go back to the table me and my friends are sitting at where my purse and jacket are at. I like coming to bars like Dirt Bar sometimes to escape the pretentioness of midtown spots, and here I am standing in line waiting for this bouncer to get off his power trip and let me rejoin my friends (which took about 10 minutes) Also, he did grab my arm really ugly and I didn't appreciate that very much either. It's 7:00 pm and Tool is playing tonight at the Toyota Center. I've been standing at the bar for 12 minutes with no hope of getting a drink. There is one bartender and both bathrooms are out of paper towels and toilet paper. This is poor management at it's worst. I live in New Orleans, so I'm used to dive bars. But this is just not okay. It looks SUPER shady from the outside, just a black building with an address. I had to park in a bunch of mud because the small parking lot was full. I was greeted by a face full of smoke from the many people outside. The inside is equally sparse, with concrete floors and only a few booths, a few posters of vintage porn on the walls that wasn't classy or even funny, and AWFUL music. The bathrooms were filthy (with the paper towel dispenser on the floor..), and I saw a couple emerge before I went in (perhaps the source of the fallen towel dispenser). Yuck. Not encouraging. My only compliment to this place is that their drinks are strong, and the shot (which I can't write the name of in this review) I had was delicious. If you want a less "strange" place in the area, I'd recommend going a few blocks to the bars on Washington instead (just try to avoid the "brahs"). read more

There's loads of space to mix and mingle with your pals and the staff are very friendly in my experience. Words cannot explain how i feel about this place, and how im going to miss it. Dirt bar was an authentic ROCK-BAR, what a rock bar is suppost to be. Dirty/messy/with a rock attitude. This place had 0 tolerance for: POSERS/WANNABE'S/CRY-BABYS/SNOBS and DOUCHEBAGS!!! I had visited this place in the past multiple times and there's really not a whole lot of places like this one. If your into the Alternative/rock scene, you know what i mean. this place had the "Here's your drink, now leave me the f%$# alone" / "I dont want to hear your BITCHING!!! / "if you dont like it, get the F%$# out ATTITUDE!!. and that is exactly why i like it, and going to miss it. This place was not for everyone, specially if your not in the alternative scene. I remeber seeing the douchebags coming in here around 11-12 midnight after getting rejected from the so called "UPSCALE" places. Wearing those stupid Affliction/Ed Hardy shits and girls wearing those short dresses and 6' heels. Me going "FML"... here we go!!
