Super easy going bar Diverse type of crowd. We were coming from a HOB event. There were people from a rockets game and just general plethora of drinkers. It was nice. Came here for industry night on a Tuesday. We were the first to arrive, as it was only 7:30. I'm not in "the industry" so I drink early on Tuesdays :) The bartender was attentive and friendly. Even as the crowd started to show up our bartender was on top of his game, making eye contact within a few seconds of me approaching the bar and promptly taking my order. I was super excited when I saw that they have Goya Ginger Beer that has a great, spicy kick. Drank that with vodka most of the evening. It was delicious!! This place isn't totally my scene, but unlike others similar places (I'm looking at you Next Door Bar), Dirt bar was welcoming and everyone was friendly. read more

While Dirt Bar isn't my usual scene, it's one of my favorite bars in Houston. Located downtown across the street from the House of Blues, your best bets for parking are either finding a spot on the street or there is also a parking garage close by. Dirt is a no-frills rock and roll bar where you can get a stiff drink and great service. I always try to stop by Dirt before a Rockets game as it's so close to the stadium. Dirt is a casual spot and you'll see a good mix of people who show up. There's a good beer selection and liquor. They also host themed parties every now and then. What puts Dirt over board, in addition to being one of the few authentic rock and roll bars in town, is that the service is so so good. The bartenders are quick and efficient. They greet you soon after you take a seat, they check up on you, and always seem to notice when you're ready for another drink. It doesn't hurt that the ladies are absolute stunners in addition to being hard workers! The two Veronicas who work at Dirt are great girls and I always have a great time chatting with them! I don't enjoy leaving negative reviews but my experience was really a poor one. Spent about 20 minutes getting ignored by the staff (and presumably the owner busy cracking jokes), standing at the bar before leaving without a drink. A "hey I'll be right with you" or anything more than what I got (even a basic acknowledgement that I was there) would have saved the day. Vibe seemed good my first time here but the terrible customer service killed my experience. Anvil got my business instead. Won't be back. read more

I'm not really one to jump on and leave a negative review but my experience last night at dirt bar was pretty terrible. I closed out my tab at the end of the night and asked for waters for my husband and me. The bartender gave it to us in a shot glass.... after asking him to refill it 5 seconds later I asked if there was a reason he was giving us an ounce of water at a time. His response: "do you think you deserve more?" What?! He then proceeds to tell me I'm cut off (because i wanted water?) - I didn't plan to buy anymore drinks obviously since I had already paid my tab... we asked the barback for a water - so nice, gives us an actual glass, which seemed to piss the bartender off and he reiterated "no more for you!" He refused to give us anymore water. I just don't understand the rationale. Definitely find somewhere else to spend your money. read more

DO NOT SUPPORT OR PATRONIZE THIS ESTABLISHMENT. THEY DISCRIMINATE AGAINST DISABILITIES!! I was harassed continuously by the staff for having a service animal. I provided documents and license for my service dog, even tho law does NOT require i do so. After several inappropriate and illegal questions about the nature of my disability from his staff, the owner Shawn asked me to leave his bar. He originally stated it was because of my dog, then changed his reason to dress code violation, and then changed it again to "being rude to his staff". Regardless of what he stated, the fact I was harassed because my service animal is blatant discrimination and is illegal. A complaint is being filed with the Department of Justice. read more

Oh, Dirt Bar. How I love you. You are by far, one of my favorite places on the planet. After not being by for almost a year (I worked nights for a long while and that just *killed* my social life), a friend and I decided to drop by before a Halloween party. It probably goes without saying, but once we got to Dirt, we never made that Halloween party. Dirt Bar is kind of hard to explain. It's not really a dive bar because it's too nice for that, though it does look pretty dive bar-ish when you drive by the low-slung concrete building with no decorations except for a neon 222. It's also not a place where the patrons can be easily classified as one group or another. There are people hear with mohawks and large number of body piercings and there are also guys in button downs, who look like frat boys. Absolutely anything goes as far as Dirt Bar attire is concerned. Also, every single person that I've ever talked to or stood next to at the bar has been nice and friendly. I guess everyone just loves being at the Dirt. The bar itself is one big, dark room with a concrete bar. There are a fair amount of chairs, which is nice. The bathrooms are also surprisingly clean and the ones in the main part of the bar are huge. I'm always a little shocked when I totter in there drunkenly to pee. In addition, they project covers of 60s and 70s girlie magazines and pulp comics on the wall which only adds to the allure as far as I'm concerned. The music here is also a perfect fit. It's on the heavier side - rock, metal, industrial - but never too loud that I can't have a conversation. There's a scrolling marquee that has the band name and song which has lead me to try and decipher what I was listening to when I drunkenly texted myself just a name or song. I'm still not sure what some of the songs are after extensive searching. I need to remember to send myself both the song AND the band. Let's get down to the nitty gritty finally, though - the drinks. The drinks here are fanfuckingtastic. They are strong. They are cheap. They have a drink called the Rim Job that is vodka and Tang with more Tang on the rim. I know it sounds disgusting, but it is anything but. The genius that decided that these two flavors would go together is my personal hero. He's even smarter than the guy that put chocolate and peanut butter together. If you are lucky and end up here on a Tuesday, it's Flip Night which means that the bartender flips a coin and, if you call heads or tails correctly, your drink is free. Flip Night has lead to some spectacularly good bad decisions on my part. Man, do I love Flip Night. I've also go to mention the people. Steve, one of the owners, is friendly and fun and just a blast to hang with. The bartenders are all pretty personable, but ladies, if you happen to get Andre, you are in luck. He is - without a doubt - the hottest bartender I have ever seen. Gorgeous and buff and also delightfully charming. I'm always happy to see him behind the bar. I wish it was easier to explain the awesomeness of Dirt Bar. My review falls short, but just go and see. I'd told my friend about it for months but it wasn't until Halloween that she got it and understood why I say that Dirt Bar is the place where all good bad ideas are born. I haaate this place! I don't care if this automatically makes me un-cool or I'm about to invite a lifetime of Yelp-hate, I stand by my two stars! I guess I do have to disclaim I haven't been here in two or so years, but still . . . my hate remains intact! I've only been here on Tuesdays, during the infamous flip night. It's usually a pretty interesting crowd. Very heavy on the scenster/emo, a little less proportion of your regular Joe Smoes. A great deal of the people seem to be regulars and they know one another, so that lends to a pretty lovely environment. I will say the bar is pretty dark, almost pitch black, save for a few painting projections. Sets the mysterious drinking mood, I guess? The restrooms are three individualized single person rooms (well at times, there's more than one, if you catch my drift, especially if hormones are raging and white powdery substances are flowing . . . I digress . .). Usually pretty accessible, but not always so clean. The two owners (brotherly pair?) are always seemingly enthusiastic and quick to serve - although there is a huge bias towards the regulars, I expect as much. So the measly two stars? I would have to say that 75% of the time, when I've been here for Flip Night, upon initial entry into Dirt Bar, the door man has sequestered me, my friends, or me and my friends in the initial front bar. This front bar is drab. No one really hangs out in this area as they don't honor the specials and there's just simply no one there. I was informed by my friend, who is friendly with the owners, that the purpose for this is to induce people to spend money at the front bar. No specials apply here and maybe (not sure?) the drinks are slightly more expensive here. The doorman usually issues some super lame excuse like, "Oh, we can't let you in there yet - there is a private party?" I respond with, "Right? Well all my other friends are in there and I'm pretty sure they were not invited to this ~private party~ So really, what's the deal?" To which I'll receive a dodgy glance and the persistent insistence there is in fact a private party. But then they'll eventually let us in once someone purchases a drink at the front bar or I'll stare down the doorman long enough. Another golden rationale for imprisoning us in the front bar, "Well the main bar is at capacity right now, so we have to wait for a few people to leave before we let you in . . ." I respond with, "Oh really, because I just parked in your nearly deserted parking lot. Are you so sure about that? And come on, THIS IS A DIVE BAR, do you really need to be implementing this exclusivity business???" And I'll either be let in then or a few minutes later. Don't get me wrong, I am NOT a confrontational person, at all! But stuff like that really really irks me. Seriously . . . like seriously??? It seems this practice has been obsoleted since they now charge $5 to even partake in Flip Night. But anyway, I am thoroughly irked since it happened to me at least four or five times years ago. And such misfortune also befell on a great deal of my friends. Maybe we weren't "cool enough" to gain immediate entry, but come onnnn! You are a freaking dive bar. Not a snotty club on Washington! I may be tempted to stop by here to see how things have changed, but that whole "we are exclusive, you have to wait to get in or buy one of our non-special drinks to get in" boochit really irritated me. A horribly abstract description of this place is that it feels like the "Titty Twister" from "Dusk til Dawn" before the vampire feast goes down and without the prostitutes. If I were to transform into a vampire and then fight til the death, this would be the place. Don't get me wrong. The place is mellow, laid back, but if it were going to go down--this setting would be ideal. Dark, cavernous with loud and fast music blaring . . . I was strangely feeling peaceful with the place. Not too many places I've found I can hang that will play the Horrorpops while I just hang out. Bartenders and staff are really cool peoples. And coin flip night . . . well--it's no joke. I'm writing this review to inform Yelpers of two facts: 1) The Tuesday-night "Flip Nights" no longer exist. Those heartless bastards at TABC shut them down, since unfortunately under Texas law, you're not supposed to give out anything that can be construed as "free" drinks (or even 2-for-1, as often seen in other parts of the country). 2) Although this bar, a mere three blocks from the Toyota Center and across the street from the House of Blues, should logically be Douchebag Central simply owing to its location, somehow it has managed to be the opposite. You'll find a crowd that can safely be described as eclectic, both on average nights and ones with an event going on at the nearby arena. You will most likely not, however, find that hunky bartender with his shirt off that Farrah A. somehow managed to capture on film, leading me to initially believe this was a gay bar (gay-friendly, I'm sure, judging from the number of tattoos on each bartender, but most definitely not gay-specific). read more

I call this place "Upscale Lola's." Take the same people (or post graduates of Lola's), dress them in prettier clothes, move them on the other side of police-infested Washington Ave, put better alcohol behind the bar, install a credit card machine, throw in some black ceramic bathroom fixtures, and take away any comfortable seating areas, and you're at 222 Yale. That seems like the perfect recipe, yes? Eh. It's a solid three-star adventure. It's dark inside. It's cavernous. There are mildly explicit images on the walls. It's that "clandestine" after hours bar that everyone knows about and frequents. Eh. No allure. It's a bar's version of tweaked-out and vapid, thankfully with no vomit under-foot. (Lola's!) Homogenized and cleaned-up punk...with no furniture. While it's a nice change from the Western Washington daft and drunken parade of douche bags, and for that I salute it, it's not a place I would seek out if were not in the area. read more

First off, I was really sad that the guy in the picture wasn't there with his shirt off. The place was pretty empty on a late Thursday night with just a couple people sitting at the bar. I didn't pick up the tab for this place but we had just a couple canned beers. The selection was pretty good from what I saw. My date and I couldn't say Rim Job with a straight face so we didn't order it. It was too dark to see where the mystical 'second bar' was so we just sat at the main bar and hung out till I realized that I had to work in six hours. It was a very nice way to end the evening and, despite the loudness of the music, I was still able to have a conversation with my date and the couple next to us at the bar without feeling like we were shouting. Also: Dirt Bar posted about Britt L.'s situation on their facebook page. Their reasoning was that the loudness of the music would have hurt the dog's ears. They offered to turn the music down in a separate area of the bar but this was not what the other Yelper wanted. The music is definitely very loud, and I am sure it's even louder when the bar is full so I fully support Dirt Bar's decision to refuse service once the customer became abusive. They offered an alternative to not harm the animal and this was not satisfactory so they got angry. The bar itself is also VERY dark and I doubt that having an animal walking around below eye level would have been beneficial to anyone. read more

Locate a building w/ 222 in a hot pink Neon sign and your there. Its dark and it should be. Basic layout w/ bar in the middle surrounded by leather swivel chairs. Boothseating w/ candles line the walls. Projectors flash some un-mainstream images over the walls while jamming to a soundtrack that's grunge/heavy/indy rock. The place always has a a nice mix of people w/ lots of tattoos who look like they have just woke up in the same outfit ready to do it again. Usually the girls are rocken and down for slamming drinks. Place allows for interaction but encourages you to mind your own when you see criminal activity. Drinks are Very Cheep and strong. The bar tenders are quick even on a Busy night. The entire scene looks like a place that would be in a Nine Inch Nails video. This place is a modern version of Lola's. -Jessica Ive never been there when it was too loud for a conversation, sitting in the booth w/ 4 chicks talking over eachother and you can hear every one. Guys w/ girl jeans? Guess you meant tight, if youd rather hand out w/ guys who sag then Id recommend Hush. Marilyn Manson and White Zombie remixes not exactly "it" Thats called Metal. As far as the people, Ive never been there when its just one group to categorize. Its normally a mix, but yeah several people expressing their dress geared toward more Rock style. read more

This isn't your frat boy hang out, neither is it some hipster lounge, nor is it a place to have bible study. This is a place to indulge in straight up hedonism. I just moved to Houston a couple months ago from Austin and was looking for a place that had a vibe kind of like some of the places I used to frequent. I went there alone about 7pm on a Monday. First off, I personally wouldn't consider this place a dive bar at all by my standards, but I'm known to frequent some real shitholes. It's too upscale feeling for that and there isn't enough old piss on the floor of the bathroom. The layout is as basic as it gets. Just a big room with a bar area in the middle and a round table encircling it, not much in the way of decoration. The music was good and almost entirely metal stuff, so if you're one of those "I can't tell what they're saying" wimps then you should probably check out a different place. I don't quite see why everyone is whining about it being too loud, because I was easily able to carry conversations without yelling or getting up in peoples' bubbles. The smoking patios were closed when I went on the fire marshal's orders, but it wasn't a big deal as it's not a very large place and the doorguy was cool to bullshit with when I stepped out the front door to burn one. When I arrived there was only five of us in the entire bar. Sat down and chatted with the bartender, got a fake knuckle tattoo while it was dead and she was bored, and just enjoyed the music. As it got later people began slowly trickling in. I was worried that the place would just be jammed packed with hipsters in the evening, but the crowd was actually a very diverse mix of travelers and locals and people of different ages. Everyone was friendly and seemed in a good mood. Bar tenders were great and personable and even reminded me to grab my debit card when I got so shitfaced I almost got into my Uber and left without it. I had a pretty good time and fun conversations even going alone. This will probably become one of my regular places. read more

Every time I come into town I make it a point to stop by and get a couple rim jobs. These dangerously tasty shots are a bit sweet without being a girly shot. Oh and they also line the rim of the shot glass with Tang. Right. So now you see why this place rocks. There are other reasons. The music makes me happy. Good tunes are always playing on the radtastical sound system that sits on the wall and tells youwhat band is playing. You might hear Thrice, The Used, Slipknot and Metallica on any given night. Yes I said Thrice. Awesometown. I dig the inside of the bar too. The walls are all painted black and they project different images onto them like old school pin ups. Below is a review of the old location, but the same bar. I'll be back in my hometown of Houston this weekend for Warped Tour and am ready to rock at the new place downtown! I'll be coming up with my boyfriend and his band who are playing the tour, along with a lot of other sweaty, tattooed, rock and roll types. Pour the Jack Daniels, lift the skirts - show them what a party is made of! First off - for anyone giving this bar less than 5 stars - well, I suppose that's the great things about living in America...freedom of speech. However, I'd like to state that if your complaints are about rock music and men in pants that aren't pleated, perhaps you belong somewhere closer to mid-town. Since this bar first opened its doors it has served its purpose in providing some of the best (and worst...haha) memories of my existence. Even though I'm now living in the great city of Los Angeles, I ALWAYS visit this bar when I'm in Houston visiting friends and family. I recommend it to each and every friend of mine who tells me they are visiting Houston - and they all call me the day after with massive hangovers and rave reviews.The owners, staff, and regulars have literally become family to me over the years I've had the pleasure of knowing them. You will be hard pressed to find nicer people behind the bar, and if you've been one of the rare people to piss them off - let me tell you something - it is DEFINITELY your fault. Don't be such a jackass about life! If you're interested in having a good time with friends, sharing laughs, strong (and cheap) drinks, and indulging in good (and usually new) rock music - then this is the place for you. If you'd rather hear Ke$ha or a mixed version of Justin Bieber - please find your way down the 10 to what most people refer to as a club. I'll keep this brief, because our favorite bartender at Dirt Bar told us that they are trying to keep the underground image of the place going... So, the economy sucks. My hubby and I are penny pinching, and we don't go out much anymore so we don't have to live off social security (or what's left of it) in our golden years. Our one exception is Dirt Bar. It IS kind of dark and grungy, but that's the charm of it. Cheap drinks and good music bring everybody together. I've come here dressed as in a preppy shirtdress, I've come here dressed in yoga pants and a t-shirt, and I've come here dressed in full clubbing gear. Everybody is welcome at the Dirt Bar. I've been here for Tuesday flip night, which bring out the gambler (and drinker) in me. It's $5 to get in, and then you flip a coin for each drink you order. If you guess right, your drink is free. Although I was a little spooked getting out of the car by myself, the hot bartender was standing at the door when I got there so needless to say the walk inside was very nice...and if a mass murder had been there waiting I probably wouldn't have noticed LOL! The music is definately rock/hard rock, but that was fine with me...I listen to just about everything so it was a welcome change from the norm. Not a huge place, but that does make it more inviting and cozy....yes the walls are black and the place looks a little gloomy, but that equals cozy to me. The drinks were definately resonable...only a $10 tab for 2 beers and that gin & gin Larae M. had! All in all and cool place to hang if you want that type of scene, just not a place I would frequent. read more

I go here before every show I see at house of blues, the happy hour is great and the bartenders are super nice and easy going. You'll be surprised by the bare style of the place but it still ends up having a really cool feel. Dirt Bar - Before we saw the used! - Dive Bars Near Me - Houston, Texas

So this is branded as a hard rock/metal bar.  I think not. If anyone has grown up in Houston they know hard rock, metal, even active rock is extremely suppressed. Why?  IDK, never could figure it out.  Go to SA, DFW or Austin and they don't have that issue.  There's not even a freakin rock station in Houston for crying out loud. So we walk into this place on a Thursday night and we are greeted with?? Drum roll please....ZZ Top and Steppenwolf playing. Barf! Oh yes there was also semi screamo/chipmunk bands playing on shuffle. I recall hearing one metal tune while being there for a whole hour. I mean, I'm looking at Yelp reviews on this place and you would think it's a hardcore metal club. You walk into a real metal club like the legendary AfterDark off HWY 290 and that was metal. Bass and drums thumping through your chest with guitars piercing your ears which happened to be new Pantera playing at the time. That was an example of a hard rock/metal club!  This is not. I'm a little older and wiser now.  It doesn't have to be so loud you can't speak to someone but it felt like being in a doctor's office with subtle background music playing. There is absolutely no theme here. Like being in a cave. Hmm.. how about a neon or two. This is a bar correct? Nothing but drab walls, absolutely no rock or metal memorabilia, a stupid full size doll with a cowboy hat that has a painted on KISS face, melted candles trying to mimic some goth theme I guess (wowie I'm so scared).  I really don't care if Avenged Sevenfold partied here one night. I'm not a groupie, just wanted a cool place to hang out for a while with a group of people and this ain't it. Probably safe to assume most of their revenue comes from the House of Blues crowds before and after concerts across the street. Other than that IDK, just a big disappointment. read more

The new location of Dirt keeps the vibe of the old place with a convenient downtown location (RIGHT across the street from House of Blues and just a couple blocks from Toyota Center)...a perfect after-concert haunt. You might even see some of the musicians you just saw on stage there. Always cool music on the jukebox (the bartender's "ditch button" makes sure of that...so choose wisely and know your audience before spending a credit to play "Don't Stop Believing" only to hear the first four notes). Prices are a little more than the old place and no more Tuesday night 222 specials, but compared to other bars in the downtown area, it's still a bargain. The smoking "patio" adjacent to the main bar (aka The Bad Habits Room) keeps the front sidewalk clear of smokers, but lack of air circulation in it can still make your clothes smell like you just came from an Iron Maiden concert at the Summit in 1985 if you stay in there too long on a crowded night. It's still better than having to leave your drink inside and crowd the sidewalk to continue your conversation with a smoker, but a couple of fans would be a welcome addition to the room. read more

What has 2 concerts next door, 3 conventions and One bartender? Dirt bar. I've been here many a time before show's and this was the worst. 1 bartender, before Tool was playing at the Toyota Center, and HOB had a show that night too. How do you schedule one bartender? I'm sure somebody no showed, and I probably know who it is, but c'mon. We were dumb for even going back after the show, although it was on the way to the car, then there were 2 bartenders. Not any better. For this type of place trying to be the go to bar before and after show's, they're not doing themselves any favors. 45 minutes to get a drink? Even good looking girls were waiting that long! Maybe they weren't that good looking because after 45 minutes of waiting I lost any buzz I had. read more

Dirt Bar is rad! It is my favorite bar, and pretty much the only bar I ever go to. I've lived in houston for a year and a half now and have yet to find anything that compares. The two brothers (shaun and steve) that own the bar are some of the nicest people I've ever met and are always down to have a good time with the customers. The staff are more than accomidating, and super friendly. Oh...and every tuesday is "Flip Night" which is pretty rad! Whenever you order a drink the bartender flips a coin and if you guess correctly then your drink is free!!! This place was a cool little spot. Cool people great staff. Definitely recommend if you are in town and want a local place.

Dive bar as in dark and interesting decor. My friend had a margarita (on the rocks only available) and I had a local IPA. She said margarita was top notch! Laid back vibe, never scary, and staff was friendly and attentive. I spent three out of five nights in here. Definitely worth coming back. Smoking patio available for those who do. read more

Dirt Bar - Dive Bars Near Me - Houston, Texas

Came here this past Saturday night with Holly S. for a friend's birthday...from Yelp, we knew it would be somewhat an isolated area, but we were still a lil' wary. We drove separately, and as I was on my way, I got a text from Holly saying,"Uhh, I'm here at the parking lot...and there are hardly any cars here." So I race my butt over there since I hate leaving my wing (wo)man in danger. When I got there, there were about 10-15 cars (hehe, I was late), and she was already inside (whew). But I could definitely see how a shady location like that could alarm a single girl. It is an isolated building on a dark lot. But on to the review...the place itself is just one big room, as everyone described. One bar, one room, very simple. There were two bartenders: the famous male *hot* one and this girl who poured HEAVY drinks. Good lord, I was inebriated with ONE gin and gin...that's right, I don't believe she put ANY tonic in that. There at two bathrooms, and they were fairly clean, albeit dimly lit. I DON"T GET WHY BARS/CLUBS DO THAT, by the way. When I've had alcohol in my system, I need LIGHTS to see where I pee!!! The bartender (girls) were really friendly, and pretty hot. Not a place I would want to go, given a choice, due to the porn on the walls from back in the day and the loud and obnoxious rock/metal that they play. Just not my cup of tea ! read more
