My wife and I got in the truck and decided to just drive to Apache Junction on a Sunday afternoon and find a place to eat. That is a bigger deal than you might imagine because she has rules about where she eats out. No loud noise, no A/C over the table, not be seated near the bathrooms or the waiters station, stuff like that. Well, when we got there it was early for the evening meal and late for lunch service so we were about the only ones there and we got a perfect table. On the front windows, nobody banging past our table, the music was enough to be heard but not annoying, and the atmosphere is wonderful. The waitress, Tessa, arrived and what a jewel she is. We asked if she had any recommendations and she laid down the menus and said, let me tell you by sections. Note here she told us about the fish fry but it was not on her list of things she recommended. The menu makes you want several things, and I was ready for all of the things Tessa suggested. In the end my wife ordered a chicken salad and I got the four piece Cod fish dinner, 4 pieces of COD, French fries and Cold Slaw. Because the Fried chicken was recommended I also ordered that to take home. The salad. That salad was huge, the chicken was moist tender and delicious. It had Feta cheese that was fresh and wonderful and plenty of it. Half of it went home with us. The fish was a mixed blessing. The pieces are small and probably have been frozen. Two of the pieces were very good and two of them were overcooked and way to crispy. But the Tarter sauce was something to write home about. I got vinegar but never used it because the Tarter sauce was so good. Just let that roll around on your taste buds a little bit, really good Tater sauce you might eat with a spoon? Does that put you in the car to go to this place? And then, because I was just sure a place like this knew how to make desert, I ordered the peach cobbler and coffee. Big mistake! The coffee was bitter and just acceptable. The cobbler was doughy, might not have actually been cooked enough, and had almost no peaches. The next day we air fried that chicken we took home and it was wonderful - and remember Tessa, she told me to get that and I should have listened to her. So would I go back? Absolutely! Fun local place with mostly good food, acceptable coffee, and star quality service. I really want to try other things like the brisket on that menu. This was our first time eating here tonight. We sought as we drove by and decided to give it a try. We started off with potato skins as an appetizer and they were delicious. Very fresh and you can tell they're made order. Then I ordered the ribeye. It was cooked just how I wanted it and it came with two sides. I chose a baked potato and a salad. I'm pretty particular when it comes to ranch dressing and I can tell you, they have a good ranch dressing! The only reason why I did not give it five stars was we are initially were going to eat dinner on the patio but there was smoking on the patio. No offense to smokers, we don't smoke and it would've been nice to have dinner out there because they did have live music. We will definitely be back again! read more

I am beyond shock and disgusted that most of the customers were walking in and around with no masks and clearly the staff had zero considerations for the safety of my family and others. What made everything 100 times worse is half of the staff not wearing a mask either. C'mon Yelpers! 4 stars?! No way, jose. This place is nothing special and I suggest, if you are looking for a nice local place to eat in Mesa, you MOVE ON! Initially we wanted to try the little bar next door, but being New Year's Day, it was closed so we settled for this place. We walked into a dingy looking restaurant with old, dusty pictures and knick-knacks nailed to the walls and when we were seated, our server was short with us as if they were about to close and she didn't want us there. We all ordered some beer and I opted for the mug to pour mine out of the bottle. When I received it, however, I opted not to pour it into the mug afterall because it was so dirty and cloudy that the very thought of drinking out of it was repulsing. I wasn't very hungry so I figured the potato skins would be a nice smaller meal but boy was I wrong! I was served 2 full sized russet potatoes, halved and carved out for the cheese and toppings. There was so much cheese on these potatoes that I literally had to take 3/4 of it off just to enjoy the potato itself. Also, they were so greasy that even in the short time we were sitting there the grease was piling up on top of the cheese. Did they even strain the bacon bits? I don't think so... Needless to say, I only ate one and lost my appetite. Also to be noted, the silverware was all spotty and looked like they hadn't seen the inside of a dishwasher/sanitizer in quite some time. The only reason I gave this place 2 stars instead of 1 is because in our rush to get the heck out of there, I left my debit card on the table and the waitress chased us outside to return it. We had lunch there today. Place looked nice on the inside. Menu was outstanding and the service was good. The only problem was the food. One of had meatloaf and there was no way that this was real ground beef. It looked boiled. The mashed potatoes weren't cooked through. They were also cold. The other had ribs which were good. We just randomly showed up during primetime on Valentine's day and only had to wait 30 minutes for a table (bar was available). They had about five Vday specials and we tried the 10oz Ribeye ($22) and the Baked Chicken breast with Risotto for $14.50. The chicken was crispy and succulent and the risotto was prefectly cooked as was the steak. The only miss was the twice baked potato which was prepared with only half the potato. Went here in a big group. This place gets busy so be sure to get here early! The ambiance and non-commercialized feeling of the restaurant/bar is great!! Its nice to go somewhere with some character. Service was friendly and quick. Even with 7 people all our food arrived at the table together. There is no music on inside the restaurant and sometimes it got awkwardly quiet like the table of old people next to us were purposely evesdropping. Music would help! Blue Moon on draft...yep...that will only be $1.50!!! Prices were average on the food and so was the quality. I would go back for sure and try different items while having a few beers. Stopped at Dirtwater Springs today for lunch and it didn't disappoint. We were served fresh chips and salsa immediately as we sat down. Our server, Alyssa, was attentive and we were served quickly even though it was 12 noon on a Sunday. I had the all you can eat Alaskan Cod with fries and cole slaw and it was terrific. My wife had the cheese crisp with chicken on it and she also raved about the taste. We finished the meal with a shared chocolate sundae and I had to tell Alyssa not to serve me any more food as I was full to the gills. While the workers here are super nice and helpful, what really brings this place down is the food. I'm not sure how they do it, but the food is somehow either too over seasoned or completely flavorless and just all around awful. I've been here twice now and both times were extremely disappointing. First visit...the steak was supposed to be medium rare. In their attempt to keep the center a warm pink, they somehow burnt the outside. Second visit...they didn't have the proper roll for the French dip and they put it on regular sandwich bread which made it awful. The spaghetti was watery and the garlic bread was just burnt toast. The filet mignon was so over seasoned and salty which made it hard to eat. It was sent back and we asked for another to be made. By the time everyone had finished their meals, the replacement filet had still yet to be brought out so we left with one person who didn't get to eat. From the outside you wouldn't guess that this place is as good as it is....it is a bit underwhelming from the outside. However, once you are inside the super friendly waitstaff (I bet they are family, they are all so awesome!!) will make you feel very welcome and help you with anything you need. In fact, throughout our dinner, I've never felt such great service! I describe the interior as "super rustic" with tons of memorabilia and other stuff on the walls and ceilings, it may be too much for some. Plenty of stuff to look at and at no time did I see any dirt or dust hanging off their artwork which is sometimes the case at places like this one. So that was AWESOME!! While we were waiting (it was a Friday night and this place is POPULAR!!) the friendly wait staff made sure we had drinks from the bar; we tried the Sarsaparilla and some other brews. Very yummy!! As soon as we were seated in a big wooden booth (super cool!) the waitress told us the specials and we needed a few minutes to figure it out. The all you could eat Cod special looked really good but we weren't sure we could do justice to it so we passed. I keep hearing it is delicious though!! I finally ended up choosing the chicken fried steak dinner with the hand cut fries and a dinner salad. Our 4 year old got the kid's dinner special chicken nuggets and his daddy got the prime rib with the baked potato and dinner salad. His parents split the chicken breast dinner and it was plenty for the two of them. I'm telling you the portions are super big!! And how can you be "out of" one of the very items your restaurant is most popular for? Very strange. Anyway, the chicken fried steak was okay, but it arrived with just the mashed potatoes we ordered - no veges. The meal wasn't very balanced. Not sure if they were "out" of veges or what. Went here for the first time today! We ordered take-out. We ordered a Ruben sandwich with fries and fried chicken with mashed potatoes and gravy and grilled corn. They called a few minutes after I ordered I got a call saying they were out of corn. When I went in to pick up my order and pay there was no clear sign of where to go to do so. So I waited until someone came up and asked if they could help me. I got the bill and handed the cashier a card which she ran then I noticed I was still being charged for the corn. I mentioned it to her and she says "oh yeah". I was confused because the menu said +$2 for the corn but I was refunded $4. I got my order and when I got home to eat I was extremely disappointed in the fact that everything was ice cold (we only live a few mins away). So we had to reheat everything at that point. Then the chicken, the chicken we got 4 (more like pigeon size) pieces. 1 drumstick, 2 wings and the smallest breast I've seen. The chicken was tasteless and greasy. The gravy was good. The Ruben didn't have any meat on it. It was actually pretty gross and almost inedible. The fries on both dishes were cold and hard as a rock (even reheating it didn't help). As a first time visitor it will also be our last time. The food was too expensive to be that gross. read more

Handlebar Pub & Grill (next door to Dirtwater) was packed so we decided to give Dirtwater a second try. We do like the look of place and feel eating there. It feels like an old Wild West type theme. Place is made out of Wild West looking wood (hard to explain). One thing, the place has a smell of like the old houses you walk into that smell of old wood. Service was still slow but better (it's not snowbird season this time). This time we both got hamburgers, fries, and a peanut butter pie. Now this was expensive, but not outrageously overpriced like the country fried steak we got last time. The burger was pretty good, but not even close to the handlebar pub and grill next door. The fries and peanut butter pie were a different story. Neither of us finished our fries. We started eating them to find the tasted "off", and the pie did as well. At first I couldn't pin point it.... but then realized they tasted like the old smell of the building! Almost like Dirtwater Springs actually had old water they used in prepping. I gave the place 2 stars in place of 1 because the burger was pretty good (and truly cooked medium rare was requested), but that's it.
