We celebrated our anniversary tonight at the Dirty Dog Jazz Café, and all I can say is...they got everything right. From the moment we walked through the front door until we left, every single person we encountered made us feel like we were celebrating with family. The hostess welcomed us with anniversary wishes, our server was outstanding, the bus staff wished us well, and everyone in between made the evening feel special. It's rare to find a restaurant where the entire team is so genuinely engaged. The atmosphere was exactly what we were looking for. The lighting was warm and inviting, the room had a wonderful energy, and it struck that perfect balance between elegant and comfortable. We noticed several other couples celebrating anniversaries, and before the evening got underway, each one was recognized. It was such a classy touch. The food was terrific. We started with the potato soup, and it was one of the best we've had. I ordered the pork schnitzel, which was excellent, and Nancy's fish entrée was every bit as good. The champagne was generously poured, everything arrived perfectly prepared, and every course reminded us why people rave about this place. The funny thing is, we skipped dessert...and spent the drive home wishing we hadn't! We drove from the other side of town, and I'd make that trip again in a heartbeat. Great food, impeccable service, wonderful ambiance, and an evening we'll remember for a long time. If you're looking for a place to celebrate an anniversary or any special occasion, I can't recommend the Dirty Dog Jazz Café highly enough. Came for a show after a dinner elsewhere. The place is smallish, but not cramped, which gives a more intimate vibe while not feeling crowded. We got dessert and drinks. Both the chocolate cake and peach pie were good, though definitely on the pricier side for what it was (about $12 each). The martini I got was perfectly balanced. Service was definitely 5 star. This place is fantastic!! Great bar manager, great chef, great live entertainment!! I usually sit at the bar and have only dealt with 1 crabby lady that was a turd customer one time. This gal, I think her name was Mancy? Was being belligerent towards the other customers, trashing the neighborhood & the establishment. It was so bizarre. The bar manager banned them and it's been wonderful since. The food is amazing and offers several options, including throw back classics from the old hill restaurant. The nightly jazz is NOT to be missed & the new speak easy is done to the 9's! I came here for a late lunch on a Saturday and I was happy with my dining experience. There was only one other group there when we arrived so service was quick and the food came out fast as well. The atmosphere of this place is great. Pretty cozy and they have a lot of cool jazz related decor on the walls. I would love to come here when they have live music going on. For my meal I got the Hudson Chop Salad and a side of duck fat fries. The salad was super good. I opted to add chicken onto it and this was a good choice. The chicken was seasoned and cooked well. I'd never had mixed greens for a chopped salad (usually romaine or something more crisp) but this was a welcomed surprise as I prefer salads with dark leafy greens. The duck fat fries were good -- I didn't really notice a difference per the "duck fat" part of the fries. It was served with spicy ketchup and malt aioli. I didn't really taste any spice in the ketchup but the aioli was super good. The 2 other people in my group seemed to really like their meal as well! I thought the pricing was pretty fair. I'd like to come back and try something from the main plate portion of their menu. read more

The place has great jazz music in the evenings. You must make a reservation. We sat at the bar because we didn't call soon enough for a table. We still had a nice view of the band. The bartender did a great job of keeping our wine glasses full; we ordered a bottle and he kept it in the refrigerator and was keeping an eye on our glasses. I ordered the salmon, sweet potato hash, Brussels sprouts leaves, maple & bacon sauce, it was excellent. I have also come here for lunch many times. I usually have soup and a salad for lunch. I ordered the short rib to go, I received one small piece of meat, mashed potatoes, beets and root vegetables. The vegetables were terrible, I have had them before at other restaurants and enjoyed them. This was by far, the most disappointing meal I have had from a carryout order. I would have sent the food back had I dined in. The food didn't smell good either while I was driving home, it had an off smell. It almost had a fish smell, I was worried that perhaps I had been given the wrong order but that wasn't the case. My parents suggested we go here. It's been around for a while. We called ahead and the woman told us we didn't need a reservation and to come on in. We arrived a half hour later and the hostess asked if we had a reservation, we didn't. There was no one inside yet, the jazz band was setting up for their set gig tonight. Summer is waiting on us, she brought us water. She is friendly and chatted with us for a bit and explained how they make their hand cut duck fat fries. She's nice, but busy helping two other colleagues with the ropes. We ordered crab cakes, mushroom bisque, a grain salad with salmon, cracker chicken with a house salad. They have two bands or sets, Wednesday through Saturday with a cover for the shows. $10 during the week and $15 for the weekend. Tuesday is a house band and they are closed on Sunday and Mondays. The band tonight starts around 6:30 or so, The crab cake tasted so-so, it was crab filled, but it was soft and mushy and lacked flavor, the bit of sauce on the plate was not enough for a quarter bite of one crab cake at all and was bland as a whole. The house salad with the honey vinaigrette is a creamy dressing, not what I would call a vinaigrette, but whatever The mushroom bisque was quite yummy, had to order another one for myself. My mushroom soup had some grainy bits, definitely not mushroom either. The cracker chicken comes with some collard greens with diced bacon, should have read the menu closely, luckily they were easy to give to my hubby on his portioned out plate. The cracker crusted chicken is crispy and slightly sweet. The greens are way to salty for me to eat. The corn mash is good. Gerard Gibbs and the organized crime, because they are organists and not part of an organized crime. Music is nice in the background. Perry Hughes is on the guitar and he's jamming. This is definitely a great place for a special night out! For me it's a little too pricey to justify going on a normal Friday night though. For three of us the bill came to $337 which included cover, our four course meals, gratuity, a beer and a bottle of wine. You definitely get a lot for your money! We attended the preview event for the Detroit Jazz Festival. The jazz was absolutely amazing! Our meal was a 3 course meal. Our Amuse-bouche was crab toast with a pesto. It was very good. The 1st course was soup or salad. We all had the salad, and it was nice as well. The 2nd course was filet, salmon, short rib, or another option I can not remember. I had the filet, and my wife had the short rib. Her short rib was very good. My "filet" had fat on it. I've never had fat in a filet as there should be no fat on the filet. The final course was chocolate lava cake or crème brûlée. The lava cake didn't ooze but was very tasty, and the crème brûlée was ok...not great. The service was decent. Our party of 4 split the bill in half. We tipped and left (asked to leave quickly after the music was over. I hoped she was joking, but it didn't seem like it. 15 minutes wasn't a long wait). When we got home, I realized they put a 20% tip on the bill automatically. We were not told that, but the itemized bill did show it. Thought that was pretty cheesy. This experience was fun... drinks were good, music was incredible, ambience was wonderful! However, service and food were lackluster. Spending $30+ on a meal I'd expect it to be pretty darn good, but instead I was met with dry salmon and way oversalted fries. My table didn't even eat the fries because of how grossly salted they were. Normally I'd feel comfortable with the server to ask for new ones, but after one of the 7 drinks of our table took 15 minutes longer than the rest to come out... I wasn't sure if the fries would even be worth the wait to fix. More on the salmon... it was a salad, but all of the dressing was poured in the middle and the salmon was placed on top of the dressing spot. The salmon skin then soaked up most the dressing and did not allow any extra to cover the rest of the leafs. Normally I'd be fine with the hefty price of an establishment like this... but I'll have to remember to eat before hand next time. Sitting at the bar and just enjoying the drinks and music would likely yield a 5 star experience. read more

My sister had excellent lamb chops and other sister perch on a nest of finely shredded potatoes with a buree blanc sauce with capers. We were demanding of our server and he was resposive. Lovely Ceaser salad as starter which was good as it took awhile for the entree. But wonderful live jazz music which was one of the reasons we went there. It's very disheartening to have to leave a one-star review for a once-supportive live music venue in the community, but alas, that seems to be no more. The DDJC was one of a few Detroit restaurants and clubs that had live music most nights of the week. It was the entire reason to visit the establishment. While the food could be hit or miss, the live jazz was always a hit. They are cutting back the live bands to only Friday and Saturday, and apparently piping in music the other evenings, under the guise of "live-steam jazz." Which amounts to turning on the radio, for free, I suppose. They also wrote some tone-deaf social media posts "celebrating" this depressing change of course, including making a "party" out of one of the regular bands they fired last performance. It's all in very poor taste, in my opinion. Maybe they should rename it The Dirty Dog DJ Cafe, (where DJ stands for "Digital Jazz") or the Dirty Dog No Jazz Cafe. Because any fan of jazz knows it's a live art form. Just listening to recordings can be easily done in the comfort of your own home over a pizza. This place used to be a patron of the arts, but no longer. So if you are looking for an atmospheric night of fantastic food, along with fantastic live music, you are going to have to head elsewhere. I know downtown's famed London Chophouse, has music every night, as well as Eddie V's in Troy, if you are over on the west side. Please support live music and the businesses that do the same. The Arts need patrons, as do the artists behind those tunes; let's keep the music playing. read more

Went there for a group of 5 with 2 birthdays, and called the day of to see if they could do something and they let the band know to do a shoutout and advised me to call the sister business, wonderful bakery a couple doors down for a cake. Did that and the bakery Morning Glory took care of customizing it and taking it down there to be ready for surprise presentation for dessert after a fantastic dinner. Great live jazz in an intimate setting, paired with good food - what's not to like? There's a $10 cover during the week and $15 on the weekends (closed Sunday and Monday). House bad Tuesdays, headliners Wednesday through Saturday. Have been there several times and have always found the staff to be friendly and efficient. The menu changes, so difficult to recommend any certain dish. Have had a great beef filet and good crab cakes. We stopped by to see if they had any available seating for the late show, despite having been told they were sold out. The hostess said that there were a couple of cancellations and offered us either the front table or the bar. We took the table, though we were just planning on drinks and dessert. The waiter was attentive and helpful. The music was good. For some reason, she let the cover charge slide, though we were willing and happy to pay it. Service??? Heck, people only care that they get paid without looking for the longevity of the business they work for. I've been going to this place because it's the only one I've found with live jazz bands. Now they've limited their food choices and charge a minimum charge to ensure profit per person but very few came for it tonight, Friday night. I no longer live in the area but I had heard about the Dirty Dog so many times from my family that I definitely wanted to check it out when in the area recently. Overall, it was really fun and I would go back...it's not the caliber of a New York club, but for a community setting like Grosse Pointe it was perfect and a real treasure without the travel. Here is what we noticed: - Reservations over the phone were easy and we arrived early and had the pick of the place. $15 cover charge, though, on Friday and Saturdays. - Food was variable. We started with the French Onion Soup, which was ok but waaay too salty....there is no way the chef tasted it first. I was a little bummed as I had looked at the menu online and had my heart set on the Pate meal, but the menu in the restaurant was different. I ended up ordering the Duck Fettuccini, with salad. The salad was very good and the pasta was ok. My dad got the Scallops, but was disappointed in the quantity, i.e., 3 scallops. The risotto was ok...I had a taste...but my dad didn't care for it much. - Beverage menu was not bad...pretty basic though. - Service was excellent. - Atmosphere was great...low key but stylin', really comfortable vibe. - Music was ok, but I suspect that it's probably a hit or a miss depending on who is playing...mics were a bit loud at first, though, but they seemed to calm down over time. The drinks were strong, apps were great, and food was amazing but I didn't get full. I ordered the scallops and they were the biggest ones I've ever had in my life! The two of us had wonderful dinners. I would have given five stars, but the bar was disappointing. I ordered a sparkling wine which was served without any sparkle. It actually was flat like it was sitting in the bottle for awhile. I sent it back and ordered something different. My partner had to send his second drink back since he had asked for a specific whisky and the drink was not made with that whiskey. So, the bar needs a little work.
