Note: My review is MOST relevant to nondrinkers accompanying friends who drink. Also to those who hate poor value being had. We 3 out of towners walked in here so one of us could get a beer while 2 of us just wanted to try out the appetizer type snacks our airbnb host suggested made this place a gem. The place itself is very nice...outdoor patio area and indoor bar with some accompanying tables. We sat at the bar because of poorly filled tables (2 people where 6 fit, everywhere). My opinion of the place goes south from here. I order a diet whatever soda (whichever I guess between Pepsi and Coke, I'm usually wrong). Well, here there was no such thing as right, because they have NO soda whatsoever. The only nonalcoholic beverages they have is tap water and a summer refresher lime juice mystery that costs as much as a beer ($5). So I got the water. No ice, water smelled like wet dog. You mean to tell me you don't have someone involved in this business that can buy cans of any soda and mark them up 250% or at least sell some stink-free bottled water? At least I didn't throw $5 away on lime flavored dog water. I probably should've ceased ordering for myself at this point. But sadly I didn't. We decided to share an order of tempting sounding potato wedges. An $8 order of potato wedges should suffice for 1 male nondrinker and 2 small females who pick at food for 30 seconds before becoming full, right? Wrong! There were literally FIVE wedges of potato. Check my photo! If I pieced the one potato we got for $8 back together, I'm certain we would've been missing 2 wedges to complete the friggin thing. Hungry much, beer chef? So I had my two $1.60 slivers of potato, waited for our beer to go away, and bailed out to Pleasure Pizza pronto. They had a $13 tri tip sandwich on the menu (surely with no fries - maybe they should sell them for $1 per fry) but I can't imagine a scenario where I would try it with stink water. This is definitely a one and done, wishing it were none. read more

Really enjoyed my experience here. One of the employees spent a good 5 minutes explaining each and every beer in their flight. The place was packed and I thought this was fantastic because he realized this was our first time at their place. I took a few pictures of their beer menu. Really enjoyed the rye IPA a lot. They also serve a very nice small menu of appetizer type foods. Not fried junk. I would definitely recommend stopping in this place if you are in Santa Cruz or Capitola area. Right off the 1 at 41st exit. Nice outdoor seating. Game boards and books inside with smaller quaint tables or longer bench style for groups. Also dog friendly. Woof woof. The brewery bizz in Santa Cruz has a freshman standout! Discretion Brewing, still in its first year of operation, was a welcome stop on our recent whirlwind tour of Santa Cruz County breweries. I called just to make sure they were open on a Saturday afternoon. Despite the cacaphony in the background indicating they were really busy, the employee carefully answered my questions and made sure that we (and our dogs) were made to feel welcome. We arrived to find both the inside, and front patio, crawling with other beer lovers. Judging by the noise level and a quick look around, everyone was having a great time! Luckily, we spotted an empty spot at one of the family sized tables and kicked back to check out the place a little more closely. There are up to 10 brews on hand at any given time, ranging from light pilsner, saison, lager, a range of ale, porter and stout. Although we did notice a couple unusual beers, there were none of the "experimental" crazy-ass concoctions we'd seen at some other breweries - which for us, deepened the actual sampling possibilities. We considered the prices to be middling. A flight of 2oz. each of 7 "regular" beers + 1 seasonal = $7, a very good deal. HH pints $3.50. Our brews were delivered promptly and consumed with gusto, when our food arrived: brussels sprouts in a beer butter and a house chili. The chunks are more finely ground, which you may or may not like - we did! Easily the best restaurant chili in as long as I can remember. I love this place. It is past time that a new Brewery/Tap Room opened in this side of town. To begin, the beer it self is absolutely tasty. The pilsner and IPA are something that everyone needs to try. If you are into brown ales they have a fantastic one also. What I enjoy about this place is how directly behind the bar you can see the brewing set up. During the week you can walk into the facility, sit down, have a beer and smell the aroma of fresh batches of beer being brewed. The staff was great and they did have a food menu which I never truly looked at but did see some nice dishes being served. They have a fantastic deals on Growlers and cheap refills. It was a hit and miss experience for me. The food was creative in presentation but wasn't what I expected when ordered. The beer flights were served in muffin trays. Cute touch. The outdoor seating was great to have but the benches seemed a little dangerous if you aren't sitting in the center, it'll tip. The gardening was a nice touch too on the back wall. Wow...the owners of this brewery need to train their staff that the customer is the reason for their business. The ladies taking orders were so rude and unhelpful. They acted like they were doing us a favor by taking our order. The food was ok, the beer is great and that's what is so sad about having to write this review. My 32 yr old adult son was looking over the outdoor seating to see if we wanted to sit in the beer garden or under the tent. The woman at the register scolded him And said that "I seat you!" There was only one other person eating there at the time so surely that was not necessary to admonish him. They have dishbins to self clear your meal. Really? Besides delivering my order to the table what exactly do the staff do? They ring up your bill at the order counter which is behind plexiglass and you never get to see the bill nor sign it. Is that even legal?Then they ask you for a tip. Yeah, we will not return and that's too bad as the beer was really good. The owners need to send a mystery diner in their own brewery and get a report on how badly the staff treats customers. Giving two stars for the beer otherwise it would be one star. The taproom for this brewery was a lot smaller than I had pictured in my mind, but it was so adorably quaint (despite the industrial chic interior) that the size seemed to make perfect sense at the end of my visit here. Boyfriend and I ordered a flight to share. We got Song In Your Heart Mild Ale, 8th Conversation (Belgian Table Beer), On the Porch Pale Ale, Hey Buddy Brown, Good Faith Strong Ale and the Scenic Stout. The On the Porch Pale Ale was amazingly light and not highly hoppy, which I really liked. Boyfriend said it was the perfect beer to pretty much go mow the lawn with. I also REALLY liked the nitro'd Song In Your Heart. It was so incredibly smooth and not bitter at all. The food was interesting. Boyfriend had ordered the beer-braised pork sliders while I ordered the clams with chorizo and corn. The pork was pretty good in the sliders, but I wasn't the biggest fan of the broth that the clams came in. There was this interestingly bitter aftertaste that sort of set of my teeth on edge. I wish I had gone with the risotto instead, but I had really wanted some meat in my dish. C'est la vie -- I'll order that next time. I also ordered the chocolate mousse with almond crumb and summer berries for dessert. This did not disappoint!! And it cleared the bitterness from the clams out of my mouth, which was an added plus. I would order this again! We also ended up buying a 32oz. small growler (32 oz. is $5.50 and I believe the the 64 oz. is like $8 or so -- and fills are really reasonably priced!) and I was surprised when the guy behind the counter told me I could have the growler filled with the nitro'd Song In Your Heart. Honestly not sure if he filled it with the beer from the nitro'd line or if he filled it from a non-nitro line, but the beer definitely tasted different when we poured it to drink a couple of days later. It was also flat (though this might have to do with the fact that the growlers have a twist-on cap instead of the flip-tops I'm used to seeing?). Though we do now have an adorably small growler, so I can't complain too much. I absolutely love Discretion Brewing! My wife and I have been loyal customers for years. They have great food and even better beer. The atmosphere is excellent and low key. During COVID, their protocols are smart and easy. We came last weekend to meet a friend from out of town. We were a little bummed that the menu no longer has the kimchi fried rice. My wife got an awesome salad instead and I got the yummy fish tacos. We hope after the plague, the fried rice returns. My wife ordered the stout and I had an Izzy so I could drive home. We came here for Father's Day and it's a nice cute Brewery. It's pretty small with limited tables. The beer was not too bad however I forgot what I ordered. I'm not really big on beers but my husband really enjoyed his. Also the father's got 50% off the first order of beers. As for the food it was pretty good, however it took kinda long for them to make it, because there was only one chef back there. They prolly didn't realize that it was going to be that busy on Father's Day. Also They had mentioned that the food was organic and locally farmed. My kids had the braised pork sliders. It was ok, I thought it was going to have some type of sauce, like bbq or something similar. It was kinda plain but the kids didn't noticed and ate it anyway. My husband had the risotto, he really enjoyed it. It had Parmesan cheese and roasted veggies on top. And I had the Fried Quail and waffles. Now that was so amazing. It was savory and sweet at the same time. The sauce that was on top was maple syrup with crispy bacon bits and walnuts. It paired really well with the waffle and Fried quail. The fried quail was cooked perfectly, crispy in the outside and in the inside the meat was tender and juicy. And for dessert we had the peach bread pudding with Chantilly cream. It was also good but I had asked if we could have a side of ice cream just so the kids could have some but the chef said no. However one of the servers apologized and said the chef is pretty stressed out back there and the server would've just scooped the ice cream herself instead of asking the chef. Overall this was a nice descent place. The price for the food was a little much, I'm assuming it's kinda expensive because it's organic. Came here after failing to eat in Capitola by the beach due to ZERO parking. Watch out for that one if you have plans to visit. This place has ample parking and isn't terribly far from the beach. Super cool vibe and there's a quaint outdoor space. We sat inside since there were 6 of us. Food was very tasty but a little pricey. I don't see many breweries with such an extensive menu so this was a nice change. I ordered shrimp tacos (15$) for two. This didn't fill me up so I had half a panini from someone else at the table. The pale ale I ordered was delicious. To top off the lunch, there was a birthday at the table and the bartender was nice enough to add a candle to the desert. We quickly scarfed down the cinnamon ice cream with freshly made beignets. This was to die for. I'm serious you need to order this it! Ya know the beer is good but everything else is overpriced and sub par. Let's start with the atmosphere...thrift store inside which does not match the overall architecture. Outside are tables that warn people they could easily turn into a teeter-totter. Totally ridiculous for an established place to have teeter-totter thrift store atmosphere. Then let's go to the food. Completely overpriced (I even watched a menu price change from $18 to $15 (would have purchased at $15) there are not enough decently priced options. Quality of the pork belly I had last time was hideous! Their neighbor at Surf City does it 100x better and for cheaper. The cheese and meat tray is OK but pretty pricey. Please don't squeeze your mustard all over and please educate the staff on your selection. More tacos less $20 plates to sit in a thrift store teeter-totter land. My fiancée and I love beer. We're on vacation and naturally we had to check out some breweries in the area. We ended up at Discretion Brewing and I got Accordion Man, their Oktoberfest brew, and she had their amazingly reasonably priced flight of 6 3oz tasters for $9. She likes IPAs, so I didn't steal much of her beer because yeah, no. I was very happy with my choice, and she enjoyed all of hers. Now, if you come here, absolutely get the beer because it's awesome. But also get the heirloom tomato soup because it'll probably change your life. At first you'll be like "$9 for a bowl of soup? What am I, some kind of king?" and then you'll get it anyway and want to ask if they can pour it in a tub and relax in it like it's hot spring in Iceland. First off - this place has amazing food. Probably my favorite place to eat in Santa Cruz. They also have great beer and if that's all you're concerned with, consider this place 5 stars. I'm writing this review because of the customer service my girlfriend and I experienced today. My girlfriend asked one of the bartenders a question and received a mean, condescending remark that made us want to leave. Sad to say I won't be returning to this establishment for a long time and will not be recommending it to my friends who visit the area looking for a good brewery. I always leave tips unless I am intentionally treated poorly so I left a $0 tip on a large bill. Great nibbles to snack on! Had the cauliflower with curried butter, and it was soooo good. I love veggies, and it was perfectly light (not greasy/gross/unhealthy the way some people like their veggies). I love the outdoor patio! The glasses are nice too. The beer selection was so-so. I tried a few types and didn't like any of them. I ordered the querry cider and it was kinda flat. For $17 bottle, it should be really good and it was just ok. The glasses were dirty the bartender attempted to serve the cider in. I'm not into ordering at a counter and think it's way too pricey to have to go to the counter to pick up my food, utensils, etc. this isn't Carpo's! I won't be coming here to meet clients because it's an interruption to pick up food. $9 for 2 small sliders is very pricey!! They had good flavor, but weren't anything to write home about. Shimmer Pils is light and thirst quenching. Any of their seasonal session's are very good as well. The food though?! It's amazing! Recently I've had the Ploughman's lunch and was presented this board of amazing. Pickles and a home made jam. Crispy bread and mustards! Traditional English food. -1 star for the massive piece of ginger that was sitting on my plate. Chicken caesar salad is unique and quite tasty. Fried chicken and waffles were a bit of a miss. This is my buddy's favorite brewery and we met up for a couple beers and to refill his growler. I enjoyed sampling some of the brews before we ordered. I liked 2 of the 3 sampled and we got the Uncle Dave's Rye IPA and the Glorioski american ale, my buddy got the rock skip. It was our last gathering before my buddy got his knee surgery. Super disappointing experience tonight. Food great, beer great, but bad judgement and poor handling of the situation afterward means we are not likely to return. This is my first yelp review but I think it's important Discretion understands what happened- hopefully positive changes can be made. I placed an order at the counter, for two entrees, add pork belly to each. (Pork belly is mandatory at all times). Buzzer buzzes, go get food: only one pork belly. Bummer. I mention to the nice kitchen server that I ordered it on mine too, she says I didn't, I say ok, I did, she says I can get back in line and order it, they will bring it as soon as they can, but kitchen is busy so it may take a while. We have already waited about 20 minutes longer for our food, than our dinner companions, and they were almost done, so I go back to my table and decide to skip the pork belly and enjoy my fried rice. Soon, someone brings a bowl of pork belly to my table. Awesome! How nice! This is what I ordered in the first place! Yay! I get to enjoy my dinner! Two minutes later, the cashier who took my order comes over to my table, as I am eating, and says "did I screw up your order?" I say, "I don't know, someone did, but it's fine, they fixed it". He says, "do you have your receipt?" And I said, "my receipt showed the total, not the itemized, why?" He said, "well, can you pay me $6 for the pork belly? I've only worked here 3 days" (While I'm eating my meal). So I get out my wallet, and hand him $6, and say "i certainly don't want you to have to pay for it out of your paycheck". He says, thank you for understanding, and I said, "I'm not actually very understanding- you got my order wrong and you asked me to give you more money, while I am trying to enjoy my meal". He said, "maybe we can buy you a couple beers?", which was nice, but I was in no mood to stay, so I said, "I think we will be leaving" My husband was losing his mind, as well as my sister in law who was a waitress for YEaRS and was HORRIFIED that they would come over and ask me for $6 while I was eating to pay for the cashier's mistake. My husband tried to convey his dissatisfaction to the manager who did not seem to comprehend anything that was happening. I understand the bar and kitchen are separate here. But this mistake was handled so poorly- please make a better system of squaring up between the two sides than asking a guest to get out the receipt while eating and fork over $6 to square their accounting. Love the food, love the beer, feel sorry for the new guy, can't believe someone made him come ask for money, and I wish such a mistake in service could be handled more gracefully by both sides of the house. When I'm in Santa Cruz I make a stop by discretion brewing. My favorite stout they offer is the mickeys but unfortunately only sell during st Patrick.
