Some of the best Indian food I have ever had and I was very concerned about the Q and not being able to make reservations coming from New York where I make reservations for everything, but it was a super simple process. The staff was so friendly they handed out warm drinks while we were waiting in the cold and then you get sent to the bar once you're able to get inside the drink options included chai, fresh mint tea, or sherry And they said it was going to be about an hour wait and I think in total we waited about 25 minutes and had a great conversation with the line manager. Now onto the food, the lamb Samosa and chef special with lamb absolutely stole the show. They were incredible. I also loved the chicken biryani and the vegetable samosas and of course the garlic naan was delicious where the restrooms are when you go downstairs separated is the kitchen and you can see them making the fresh on and it looks incredible . The Dehue chicken tikka was also delicious but something that I didn't realize is that there wouldn't be sauce with that just something to keep in mind, but it was incredible and super flavorful. I feel like the Soho Carnaby location has slightly less of a vibe compared to the others, but it was still incredible inside beautifully decorated. So this place is definitely a tourist spot, but they do it well with the ambience, low lit lighting, and food. I like the touch with offering warm chai or sherry the people waiting on line. It shows that they are appreciative of your patronage. The food is honed down to a well executed formula especially with the daal. I don't know if I've had better black daal before. One star off--What lacks however is the 2 hour seating limit rule. I understand that diners shouldn't linger. However, on busy nights where you can't find your server to order some more dishes (mainly dessert at end of meal), it leaves a sour taste in my mouth because you're basically kicked out despite wanting to order dessert and being refused because you literally just made it 2 minutes short of the two hour limit! read more

We were asked the standard "have you ever been here?" & for the first time ever, received zero response from the staff when we noted we had first timers... she just turned & walked away - no welcome, no get bent, nothing. If you're in London you definitely have to make a pit stop for Indian food. As for Dishoom, this place definitely checks that box of semi-upscale good Indian food, but honestly nothing that would truly blow your mind compared to some mom and pop shops you may be able to find in other areas. The environment definitely gives tourist friendly and the interior is elaborately designed, however I feel like the portion sizes are definitely lacking and with prices being a bit higher than your conventional Indian spot makes this place slightly underwhelming. I asked the waiter for a main entree recommendation to pair with the veggie biryani and he recommended potatoes. Was an odd rec in my opinion and I last minute remembered the daal and ordered that. It is consistently the best food and atosphere of any restaurant in Edinburgh. So, when we met up with our son and his gf in London this summer, we booked a reservation at Dishoom Carnaby. We booked an early dinner reservation before before going to see Moulin Rouge nearby at the Piccadilly. Not surprisingly, Dishoom Carnaby met all of our big expectations after our numerous meals at the Edinburgh outpost. We enjoyed the casual environment of this Dishoom and loved where we were seated, in a back area with a glass ceiling and overstuffed wooden couches nearby. It was 4 in the afternoon, so the afternoon light made for a nice, casual atmosphere. The black daal is magic. I don't know what they do to it, but holy cow, it's just the best thing on the menu! The chcken tikka was moist and perfectly seasoned. We fought over the gunpowder potatoes and raita! And the jackfruit biryani was new for us and very yummy. Dishoom is also all about the drinks! I started with a Sunny's star martini and ended the meal with a naughty chocolate chai. After the amazing service that is typical of Dishoom, the wonderful dinner, the perfect atmosphere in a gorgeous pedestrian neighborhood, and the naughty chai, we all rolled out of there in perfect form for an evening of Moulin Rouge. Food was delicious, but we were surprised by how many items were spicy when it was not designated as spicy. We had also asked the server and he said not spicy. We had two kids with us, 10 and 13, and they both found it to be too spicy. My 10 year old doesn't eat spicy but my 13 year old eats kimchi and Korean tofu soup at medium spiciness so I was surprised that he couldn't tolerate the spice. We ordered the Chote Papad, Ruby Chicken, Gunpowder potatoes, Black Dahl, Chicken Berry Britannia and garlic naan. Everything had a little kick to it except the garlic naan and ruby chicken. The adults loved the food, but I wish we had know it was so spicy so we could have ordered more non spicy items for the kids. This was the second Dishoom I've ever been too and while it has the same vibe as the other, it's quite unique at the same time. I purposefully scheduled a 16hr layover in London just so I could come into the city and enjoy this food. I ordered the lamb vindaloo spicy and was sweating pure happiness the whole time. He had to gargle down four water bottles. The sides of rice were very nice and he was glad they added a lemon to deal with the spice. Just caught him off guard a little bit. I thought that the bathrooms required me to go past the kitchen, which delighted me because I got to see the inside of the restaurant industry, which was very entertaining and busy. There was a long wait, but the staff provided drinks outside and allowed me to order some snacks at the bar Which delighted me. Was beyond excited to try Dishoom, as it was my first time in London and I knew Indian was ironically enough one of the best represented cuisines in the UK. I'd been recommended Dishoom, and I came prepared to try all the signature dishes and drinks. The curries were honestly nothing special. It obviously wasn't bad, but I felt it was too salty most of the time, and the small serving sizes and the lack of sufficient complimentary naan/rice for the price were off-putting. The chicken ruby in particular felt overrated. One thing that isn't is the black dahl, as I am a lentil lover and I can easily eat multiple orders of that dish myself. Cocktails, lassis, and the ambiance were all 10/10, however. Great experience overall, but the food just didn't reach my expectations by a tiny bit. read more

Can pair that chicken ruby with a grilled item or two or some daal. The one thing Dishoom doesn't really do perfectly is cocktails. What a treat! Surely one of my favorite London experiences ever. The curry and the naan was a standout. Popped over at 6pm on a Saturday as a party of 1. There was already a line forming but it wasn't bad at all! We were given a complimentary glass of hot chai tea while we waited (nice touch). Once you get inside, you're given a buzzer and encouraged to get a drink at the bar. I'm not a big drinker but they had a lot of unique cocktails so why not! The bartender was very nice and helpful and I was seated within 10 minutes of hanging at the bar -- nice! It was unfortunate I was alone bc I wanted to try many dishes but had to be mindful. Very hungry, I ordered the lamb samosas as a starter, and the chicken ruby with plain naan. My waiter was great and he mentioned that this restaurant concept incorporates Iranian influences. I thought that was cool being from LA (big population in Orange County) and thought perhaps that's why a lot of my favorite Indian dishes were not on the menu (such as saag paneer and saag alloo). Given my limited experience of the menu, I just thought it was okay. The samosas were pretty thin philo dough w/ ground lamb that tasted more like beef. The chicken ruby was nice but didn't stand out to me (basically tikka masala if you had to compare). The naan, although I saw it being made in house downstairs, was also nothing to write home about and dry flavorless (no butter or whatever others were mentioning on their reviewed). I'm grateful to have the experience, and would for sure come again, but will make sure I dine with others so I can try a variety of dishes and have a better formulated opinion. Everyone knows about Dishoom. If you're visiting London on travel or asking the locals for food recommendations after relocating you are definitely going to hear about thiis upmarket chain more than any other restaurant. And, it's for good reason: Indian and Indian-adjacent food is to the Brits what Mexican food is to Los Angelinos, and unlike most other recs in this category Dishoom is likely to please your senses beyond the food because the attention to the experience is top notch; you can find tastier eats than Dishoom but you'll be unlikely to find them served in a space like this until you rank up to the likes of Gymkhana. The first thing you're going to hear about in regards to this instituion are the lines and how to avoid them. It's best to take note of this information because it's true at all of their locations: show up for breakfast or lunch and you're likely to walk right in but make the mistake of arriving at 6PM and you'll be in for a long wait. This seems part of the branding and you'd think they could have sorted out this issue after opening a bunch of locations in the city but it is what it is. There are plenty of good things on the menu but I'm going to be boring and just recommend the same things everyone else does: Black Dahl (a savoury lentil based soup that has deceptively deep flavor) and the Ruby Chicken which will serve your butter/tikka masala needs quite well. Cocktails here are also on point so get adventurous and try some interesting ones! This is a rare occasion where I'm going to agree with the locals: Dishoom is good and worth a visit! read more

I bought into the hype of this place. We decided to come here for dinner. We were told the wait would be 30 to 40 minutes and ended up waiting about 55 min. I felt like they tell you a lower time and so you become committed to eating here if it exceeded their estimates. Many people were angry bc they had waited a long time. When we finally got seated, we quickly ordered bc we were hungry. We got this red chicken that was okay. The main dishes don't come with any rice, roti or naan. You have to order this separately. Nearly 14 years ago, Dishoom changed the culinary landscape in London in regards to Indian food. Their combination of traditional homestyle cooking mixed with a vibrant yet retro décor plus expertly crafted cocktails proved to be a winning recipe that now has made them a staple throughout the country. Naturally, we had to order a smorgasbord to sample a little bit of everything. For Small Plates, we started with their signature Okra Fries in addition to Lamb Samosas and the Chili Chicken. I've never been a big okra fan but that all changed with one bite. Crispy, spicy, crunchy, savory - everything you could ask for in a single bite. Easily the star of the appetizers. For the Main Courses, we ordered the Murgh Malai, Chicken Ruby and the Chef's Special Salli Boti. The Murgh Malai was some of the most tender and flavorful chicken thighs I've ever had in my life. They weren't kidding when they said they marinate it overnight in garlic, ginger, coriander and cream. Couldn't get enough so we ordered a second portion. The Chicken Ruby is as similar to a Butter Chicken as they offer which makes it incredibly popular and rightfully so - it was quite delicious. Salli Boti is their take on a Parsi classic. Braised lamb in a rich and flavorful sauce served with buttered Roomali Roti. It's cliché to recommend the Chef's Special, but it's worth it. Last but not least - dessert. How could I not order the Basmati Kheer (rice pudding). Silky smooth caramelized basmati rice pudding cooked in a vanilla infused coconut milk topped with a blueberry compote. The chicken ruby was especially perfect to the taste and so delicious with the garlic naan and rice. The black daal with the lentils was also such a simple dish was went so well with the naan. It had a very heartwarming flavor. I can't wait to go again! The waitress was also very helpful in figuring out what and how much to order. The fried okras was also my next favorite dish, fried to perfection. There was also a dish recommended by the waiter it was a curry chicken dish that I didn't even have a chance to take a picture of it because I couldn't stop myself from eating it all. Let me just start this review with one word: Perfection . That is the only way that you can describe Dishoom. The food, interior, location, and people are all amazing. See I've never been the biggest fan of Indian food but being reintroduced to this genre of food through Dishoom has really changed my perspective. Every dish from here was quite literally amazing, it was so great that I could literally name my future child after the food. The House Black Dahl, Chicken Ruby, Lamb Chops, Basmati rice, cheese and garlic naan, and the chocolate pudding with Kashmiri chili ice cream was really unique. Just walking into the restaurant I instantly had high hopes as I caught amazing scents of dishes. While waiting to be seated there is also outdoor and indoor seating where you are served some drinks and appetizers liked he Okra fries which are delicious. The staff was also super kind giving advice on what food to order and even helping my family and I find some outdoor seating while waiting to be seated in the restaurant. While eating the seating arrangements and interior was quite cozy and beautiful with lots of space to serve so many groups. This restaurant is absolutely perfect, I will literally be coming back to London just for Dishoom and I cannot wait for a location to be opened in New York. Overall, I found the okra and the curry to be too greasy. The flavor of the curry was good, but my partner and I both had upset stomachs afterwards. Maybe we were used to the spices. I made reservations well in advance because I heard it gets packed and that is true - when I left after my dinner, there was a long line out the door and around the corner. My friend LOVES Indian food and is also extremely picky and particular so I was curious to see what his thoughts would be. Our first time in London, and we had heard this was the place for Indian food in the city. One of the only places with lots of Yelp reviews in London. Short walk from Trafalgar Square and the National Gallery. We came in just before lunch time and got seated right away as a party of 2. - Lamb samosa (4.5/5): Super crispy, amazing flavor. The appetizers came out pretty quick too. Also the sauce was delicious. - Okra fries (5/5): These were so yummy. My husband doesn't even like okra, but he thought these were really good. Lightly fried and not too greasy. - Chicken ruby, garlic naan (5/5): The sauce was the best part, perfect for dipping the garlic naan. The naan was SO GOOD. Ever since my first visit to Dishoom four years ago, I couldn't stop thinking about how great it was! So much so that I had to make a return visit! Even an hour long wait wasn't stopping me from this delicious Indian food. My friend and I were HIGHLY ambitious, but we somehow managed to put down eight dishes. Have to provide the rundown: 1. Lamb Samosas: These were solid, had a little kick to them. A nice appetizer. 2. Spicy Lamb Chops: I definitely had these last time, but did not remember it being this good. Wow, so much flavor and kick, yet so tender! Love that they had some char to them to give them some crunchiness. 3. Dishoom Chicken Tikka: Normally I wouldn't give two thoughts to chicken, but I enjoyed this so much last time I had to get it in again. Cooked super tender and with that chicken tikka flavor! 4. Salli Boti (half-plate): One of the few curry dishes that Dishoom has, the Salli Boti is not something I got last time. Really glad I did! The curry is served with tender lamb. Excellent dish! 5. Garlic Naan: I mean, you can never go wrong with garlic naan. 6. Chicken Ruby: Another one of Dishoom's few curry dishes. Had a decent kick to it and the chicken was great! 7. Gunpowder Potatoes: Probably shouldn't have attempted this, but damn they really give you a ton of potatoes! They were really soft and the butter, crushed aromatic seeds, and green herbs gave it a nice touch. 8. Grilled Malai Mushrooms: This dish actually surprised me. I'm not really a huge mushroom guy, but these mushrooms made me want more! The malai marination made this dish for sure. Service was great! Our waiter was almost bemused that we ordered so much and didn't think we could finish everything, but we sure surprised him! Other than that, he kept the water coming and was very prompt with everything. Ambience was nice. The lights were bright to start the night and were turned down over the course of the night.
