So I managed to lock myself out of my apartment...at 8:20am with the stove on while I was hardboiling eggs. That was great. So I kept calling around trying to find a locksmith to get over there before my entire apartment building burned down and all the locksmiths I called were not that sympathetic ("Sorry ma'am, but we're busy, we'll have someone over in about an hour and a half." Great. And I won't have anywhere to live by then so thanks for that). At 9:02 I called District Lock in a panic. The woman on the phone went "OH MY GOD" put me on hold for thirty seconds and comes back on to go "I have someone on a job three blocks away, I've quickly pulled him off it and he's coming right over." At 9:20 the very nice locksmith was there, and by 9:25 I was into my apartment. At which point of course, the eggs had exploded all over my kitchen, and the smoke alarm was going off. But hey, the District Lock guy took it all in stride, helped me open all my windows and wave magazines around until the smoke alarm calmed down. Seriously, they were so nice, so understanding, so helpful and so professional. Cannot recommend them enough. The coda to this story? The locksmith went out of my building to get paperwork, someone locked the outside door behind him, and then he got locked out until I came to let him in. Just so I'm not "one of those" type of yelp-ers... Let it be known that John of District Lock came out to my house stat and finished rekeying every lock I needed taken care of before the end of his shift. Stellar workmanship and before you think I don't know decent locksmithery (it's a word now, ok?) I assure you I do because I used to have to utilize a different service in the Baltimore area far more often than I care to admit and I learned plenty from the many errors of my ways. So that John is "something special"... After reading my initial post regarding scheduling an appointment, he responded very quickly! John was extremely concerned and bothered by the feeling I had expressed as it related to his company. He took the time to sincerely apologize and to offer a resolution to the issue. Making the appointment was very easy. We needed a key made for a pretty old steel door in our basement. The person who made the appointment even had me go look at the door to see what type it was and then quoted me a price based on them having to drill the door. We made the appointment, done. Simple. On the day of we had a 10-12 window. They did call to let us know that the locksmith b was held up on a previous job and it would be closer to noon. They ended up arriving closer to 1. I was not present but for whatever reason (even though I'd explained the type of lock and what we needed) the original quote went up $60. Then, when my husband went to pay cash - the locksmith didn't have change so we paid ABV additional $5. They did to a good job and my husband said that the locksmith was friendly and professional and advised him about re-keying the locks to our home etc, but those two things did rub me the wrong way. If you are a no cash business - you should make it a point to let customers know ahead of time and also if you're not entirely sure - a price range is safer than increasing the price when you're on site. All things considered, I would 100% use them again and would recommend them also. read more

I owe my sanity to District Lock, specifically to John, who responded on a Saturday and came out within an hour of my call to change out my mailbox lock when my keys had been stolen. John's knowledge of all things related to lock security really inspired confidence that I'd made the right choice. He even recognized the exact lock model on my front door from out on the sidewalk, gave me advice on what to replace that lock with in a few years when it wears out, and did the replacement on my mailbox without even slightly denting the box. The repair took all of five minutes. Then, when I mentioned that our front door lock sticks every time you try to open it, John diagnosed the problem immediately (our HOA had not known how to fix it). He then FIXED the problem by replacing several screws and putting a shim behind one of the door hinges. He did this all out of personal kindness, charged me nothing, and has now saved all the residents of our building from having to use both hands and repeatedly cutting their fingers trying to turn their keys in our lock. Even though I hope to never need the services of a locksmith again, I would welcome working with this company at any time. I wish they had other services so I had other excuses to have a service experience this positive. read more

In fact, I was going to replace all the hardware everywhere, but John explained that re-keying the front door would be cheaper for me than reinstallting the lock set. It wouldn't have taken any more time for him to install the new set, but it would have cost me more money. John arrived precisely when he said he would. He did the job thoroughly and quickly. He explained to me what the different problems were that he was addressing (each of the four doors was different and each had quirks better left to a professional) and he answered all of my questions. There are a lot (A LOT) of fly-by-night locksmiths who will show up, diagnose your problem in a way that is quick for them and expensive for you. This is not District Lock. WARNING - DO NOT CONFUSE DISTRICT LOCK WITH ANOTHER FRAUDULENT COMPANY. Responsive, quick, efficient, and on time. What more could you want? For months, I kept meaning to go to the hardware store and replace my cheap door handles with better quality ones. But I'd get overwhelmed by choice (color, brand, how am I supposed to know what's good?) and seemed to never have the time. These guys came to the rescue! Jerry came to my house, showed up on the earlier end of the 2 hour period, brought a few options (none of which I loved), helped me search on Amazon for door handles that would match the rest of my hardware, and then came back to install them. District Lock has always been terrific. Unfortunately I can no longer recommend them due to a recent issue regarding a refund we're owed and were promised. Long story - but after three months still no refund and I just filed a complaint with the BBB which I really did not want to do. Of course, it's not about the money at this point just really poor business practice. UPDATE: Within 2 hours of posting this review I was contacted by John. He was courteous and genuinely concerned about this situation. As I expected, it sounds like this was an anomaly as upper management was unaware of what was going on. I had a refund check the next day that John hand delivered and wrote out of his personal account. That's true customer service and what customers can expect from District Lock. read more

TK: Agree with all the previous reviewers! I originally made an appointment with another locksmith company but they did not deliver (the person who was supposed to come got held up somewhere and the person who came in his place did not have equipment to deal with a slightly more complicated key situation). After waiting for that other locksmith and then learning they could not do it I really wanted to get it done and over with that same day. I called District Lock at 2 PM and by 4.30 PM I already had all my locks re-keyed! The lady who answered the phone was very friendly and while she couldn't promise someone could come out straight away she promised to try... and indeed, John came and did a wonderful job. But I just spoke with John, the senior locksmith, who reached out because I was dissatisfied to explain the situation. Apparently I was the victim of a scam artist, and it was not District Lock -- something that apparently happens more often that you think and I urge people to be on the look out for. Called John early in the AM. Our nanny locked her keys in her car and we needed to get the keys out before I left to work. Last Saturday I had a appointment with District Lock to replace my dead bolts on my two security gates. The technician who came to my door (I'm sorry I forgot his name!) was prompt and friendly. As promised he came within the 9-10 am window (he came exactly at 9:30am). He had a great rapport, chatting me up about my dogs which was nice. He was friendly and had great customer service! When the new lock on one of the security gates interfered with the lock on the door, he made sure that all the locks were functioning properly and made sure all the holes were aligned so everything fit perfectly. First, I live in the city and expect strange and sometimes bad things to happen. Well my house was broken into (while I was asleep) and my stuff (as well as my Jeep!) were stolen. I called District Lock and Cathy (I think was here name) was VERY helpful and accomodating and was able to juggle other appointments so someone could come out to my house right away. Steve showed up and was wonderful! He promptly fixed the lock and made me 4 keys. He was also very nice and helped me close the basement window that was kicked in. He made a few recommendations regarding my window (how they got into the house) and after I clear with the landlord, I will call District Lock to come out again to do the work. John is a rockstar. I was initially ready to have another locksmith blast the Kryptonite bike lock off my bike after I mistakenly lost the keys. District was more expensive - thus my initial hesitation - but after talking to John at length, I cancelled my appointment with the Other Guys and had him come on over. Updating my review. There were a couple of scheduling mishaps at first that were not ideal, but I am very happy with how John ultimately remedied the situation. As soon as he heard what happened he called me to offer a very sincere apology, reschedule a time directly with me, and came out and did the work free of charge to make up for all the miscommunications. He also replaced two locks for me in a matter of minutes. Miscommunication will happen -- it's how you respond to those types of issues that really demonstrates customer service...and John proved that they take those things very seriously and work hard to ensure you have a good experience.
