None of the acolyte locations match the original on F street. Quality control is just not the same but is still a cut above in fast casual taco fare. All the elements are there, but somehow end result just doesn't match the hype of the founding store. I went at 2 pm on a Tuesday when the restaurant wasn't busy and service was excellent. That's where the excellence ends, unfortunately. I had three tacos in corn tortillas: carne (jefe way), barbacoa (Mexican way), and carnitas (Mexican way). The carne and barbacoa were tasteless (did they season them at all?). The carnitas was the only one with some flavor. I've never had the jefe way (cheese, lettuce, pico, sour cream, and grilled veggies). The jefe way made the carne slightly more exciting but still not very flavorful. This is my first time at the District Taco in Tenleytown. I have been to the one in downtown DC a handful of times and I am usually disappointed (though I think this was the least flavorful experience). I lived in Mexico for a year and I think there are better places to get tacos in the area, including Fish Taco (three locations in Maryland; I usually get the shrimp or fish though) and Taco Bamba (VA). read more

Pretty bummed with my experience here. I ordered online and arrived to find my card had been charged but the restaurant hadn't received my order. Annoying, sure, but the manager fixed it quickly by taking my order in person and filling it. When I got to where I was going (work), it was noted that the queso, as well as the beans were absent from the order. Tasted fine but I was at first taken aback why my cheese crunched. Regardless, Barbacoa meat AMAZING, as was carnitas equally OUTSTANDING. Carne asada... not my favorite / just ok. Toppings all fresh, delicious and generous. Guacamole and chips are excellent and portions generous. 3 tacos filled generously and each with double corn tortillas (and chips and guacamole) = a lot of food. The food here is good and fresh. But we come right when they open at 9:00. Nothing is ready. The coffee is not made. I tripped over the floor mat which had not been rolled out. The chairs were still on top of the tables. And the cream for coffee was not ready. If you open at 9:00 be ready! Wouldn't write this review except it is a consistent issue over many months. Cannot remember when this first post was. Came back today 12/28/2019 and nothing has improved. Showed up at the opening. Coffee had not been started. Condiments bar was empty. 2.5 stars. Totally average tacos, available relatively fast and near Tenleytown. The perks of this place are that it has lots of seating and produces food relatively quickly. The food in question is, well, what you'd expect from a mid-sized taco chain. I ordered a salad with barbacoa and was disappointed by how little they gave. I struggled to get meat in most bites. The spicy salad dressing had a good kick, but it there's nothing else here to distinguish it from any other chain salad. When I started working around the corner from DT, I was excited to try as I heard good things about this place. Well, a couple of months ago I got the California wrap with my selections and would you believe that the rice was crunchy. Now, I was doubting my self as I ate the whole thing (I was really hungry). I had "tacos al pastor" - but only in name: the pork was dry, poorly seasoned, and they added the pineapple as a topping... you read that right, they did not cook the pork with the pineapple. The corn tortillas were also dry, the texture was somewhere between cardboard and leather. They were probably overcooked and/or reaheated. Mixed feelings here. Eagerly awaited the opening of this location for months. I've been in a few times and am generally satisfied with the food. I do noticed that the quality is somewhat inconsistent though, often too dry and lacking flavor. The main issue I have with this location is the service. I understand that it's new and the employees are still probably new, but each time I've been in there, there have been significant delays and issues with orders, either mine or others. It seems to happen on both ends- the cashiers have a hard time correctly recording the order, which results in issues when the orders are being prepared. The other locations seem to have the process down to a science, so I'm hoping that with time the Tenleytown location will improve on all fronts. read more

A friend and I came here in between our class break and I must say we were excited for taco Tuesday . Upon entering the establishment that thrill for Taco's slow began to diminish. The cashier who helped me was nice and patient as I was undecided. However, the cashier who assisted my friend was nice up until the end of the transaction. The guy (Julio) practically forced us to move out of the way so he can help the next customers . I don't mind moving but the tone and way he spoke was very rude. After moving to wait for my food , my friend received his order right away . While I on the other hand had to wait for my food. My friend was able to sit down , eat his food get additional toppings and finish his 2/3 of his tacos before I got mines. I didn't mind waiting however notify me about the wait. I was an early adopter and huge fan of District Taco when it first opened. Before it had expanded to so many other locations so quickly. The prices have gone up and are ridiculous. I order a breakfast burrito with no additional protein at all, and yet I was charged the same as if I had ordered chicken, steak, or bacon. Spending $12 for a burrito with eggs and potatoes is completely ridiculous. Surfside, just up the street, sells a similar but much better and less expensive version. I know that prices have gone up everywhere, so this is less about the price itself than it is compared to the prices of items with meat. As a vegetarian, I'm used to this issue, but places like Chipotle have it figured out. DT should too. The prices have gone up and the sizes and quality have gone down. This place is a machine... It tends to need a few tune-ups from time to time. This place is full of energy but it is missing on technical execution... What separates this place from the rest is the fact that they do offer BREAKFAST! You have a choice of breakfast tacos: Eggs, cheese and potatoes or Egg whites or Veggie beans with sauteed onions, peppers and cheese.... BUT THAT'S NOT ALL!! You get unlimited toppings on the breakfast tacos! The toppings include : Pico de gallo, sour cream, tomato, shredded lettuce, cilantro, raw onion, grilled onion and bell peppers, Cheddar cheese, fresh jalapenos, Vegetarian Black and Pinto beans and garlic lime rice! ALL FREE! But with this option comes a few premium selections. Guacamole, bacon and Chorizo are considered premium items and you will be charged .50 per item.. (Note to self... If you are ordering a vegetarian item, the guacamole will be free of charge!) There is the standard Huevos Rancheros but the thing that I noticed immediately was that the eggs were described as "Cooked Hard"... Why did they only put this on that particular item??? There is also a Black beans (vegetarian ) potato and cheese burrito. Breakfast is the only thing to set this place apart from the Chipotles and California Tortillas Standard Burritos and taco choice like Chipotle so I will not bore you with this. I dropped the rating because the pork was not prepared well. there were two offerings. Carnitas, literally "little meats," is a type of braised or roasted (often after first being fried) pork in Mexican cuisine. Pork carnitas are traditionally made using the heavily marbled, rich 'Boston butt' or 'picnic ham' cuts of pork. size and seasoned heavily before slow braising or deep frying. At this stage the collagen in the meat has broken down sufficiently to allow it to be pulled apart by hand or fork or chopped with a cleaver. Prior to serving, the pork, along with some of the rendered liquid, is placed in fairly shallow pans (to maximize surface area) and roasted at high heat for a few minutes to produce the desired alternating texture of succulent softness and maillard reaction crispness. This was not a good representation of Carnitas. The other pork option was Al Pastor: Carved Rotisserie Pork marinated with Guajillo chilies. Guajillo chilies may be used in pastes, butters or rubs to flavor all kinds of meats, especially chicken. Alternatively, they can be added to salsas to create a sweet side dish with a surprisingly hot finish. BOTH OF THESE PREPARATIONS WERE VOID OF FLAVOR! It appears that the same pork was used for both dishes. The Al Pastor would have had an addition of pineapple. The Carnitas was just slow cooked meat that contained no marbling and both were bone dry.. Sad day for a Pork lover. Every dish is served with shredded lettuce and pico de gallo. You also get to choose a free salsa ! Tomatillo (mild) Chitomate (medium) Meztizo (Hot) and my favorite Habanero! (upon request) The habanero was a big let down. It had the smokey flavor and mild heat that was supposed to be the Guajillo pepper for the Al Pastor Rotisserie Pork. I liked the flavor but the heat should have knocked my hat off! Overall I will return when they get running on all cylinders. Just mark it up to newness. I raised the rating to 3 stares because EVERYONE in this place had on a smile and were full of energy! read more

The opening of this DT changed the Tenleytown lunch game. Wonderful Tex-Mex food at a great price. I usually make myself a veggie burrito (free guac!), although lately I've been loving the quesadillas, especially with some shrimp. The only time I've been disappointed was with the fish tacos. I'm a huge fish taco person, but on the two occasions I tried them here they tasted pretty funny. Then again, my best friend orders them every time we go, so it might just be a personal preference. This is a good place to eat tacos. Even if they're fast food, they're tasty. The only problem I found was that the corn tortillas were not very hot, so they broke when I tried to eat the tacos. That's a very important detail to keep in mind, since the tortilla is the key ingredient to tacos. Other than that, the salsas were very good as always. Place was pretty disorganized, with only one cashier. The SWINGS Coffee was all ICE cold and the manager could have cared less, handed the cashier a card for the refund and walked away. The cashier was struggling to do a refund and she had no idea how to do it. The line backed up to about 20 people until the manager finally came back out to show her how to do the refund. Beautiful clean lined space. OPEN 7am to 10pm EVERY DAY. Tried the 3 for $8 burritos and they were all tasty. LARGE bag of tasty tortillas also. Their RED salsa sauce is amazing but they have a few others I did not try yet at their great salsa bar. Staff very friendly and this place will do VERY WELL esp. for AU crowd. Kinda cool with a gorgeous high-rise right above the space. As I told partners NOT too may options on THAT side of Wisc. Ave. Beer and wine available. A great addition to the neighborhood. read more

Do you want midiocre food with midiocre service then this district taco is for you. Like bean and rice burritos then you will love their burritos with a TBSP of meat to act as seasoning. I order 2 burritos and a kids steak quesadilla. When I got my food I notice it was just a cheese quesadilla no steak when over to let them know I left and instead of bringing it to my table they yell out my number ok no problem came to the cooks and they handed me the exact same quesadilla they litteraly just open it and shove steak in it didn't even bother to melt it together again gave it back to them for a new one and they looked at me as if I was asking them for their first born mind you I know this makes me sound like some one that complaints a lot I'm not check out my other reviews I give praised where praised is due. I was excited that District Taco was going to open in Tenleytown, because coworkers raved about some of their other locations, they're literally next door to my place of work - and besides, who doesn't like tacos?! Staff is friendly, lines move somewhat slowly, but that's to be expected with a new restaurant working out all the kinks. I immediately fell in love with their queso. The chips are tasty but not special - what's important is that they are a vehicle for the amazing queso! What makes this a 3-star review is that I have been disappointed with all 3 of the entrees I've tried, for various reasons. The 3 tacos - they charged extra for for guacamole, even though I stated I am a vegetarian (after they specifically asked "What meat?") The burrito - same thing with the guac, AND they charged a 2nd extra fee for requesting queso (without notifying me until after I'd paid). The nachos - they offered guacamole and specifically said it was "no extra charge" since I was not getting meat - so why do they charge for it for other products?! Be consistent! Also, with the nachos, I asked for queso but no sour cream (because yuck) - they gave me sour cream and no queso. Who gets nachos with no queso?! In the future, I will stick with the chips & queso, which I would gladly give 4 stars. read more
