But music lovers with kids also want to support shows and live music of less commercial genres (jazz, funk, blues, folk, etc.) so it's there for the next generation(s). Don't let Merlla M, who has 19 one-star reviews, change anything you are doing. I feel like parents there do their very best to monitor and watch the kids but if they are into the music and not getting in the way of the staff and the parents clean up after them... What's the issue? We are so lucky to have an option like this and I am in debt to Fitz's so want to support them when I can. Live music will not survive on nostalgia or only off the very young/very olds/childless's $$$. Keep it up and thank you.

Maybe one craft beer, but nothing special there. And no food. The staff is nice enough, especially if you're a regular. If it's your first time in, then just be your friendly self and you'll be fine. This is by far the diviest dive bar in the area. You're kinda taking your life into your hands coming here (alright, not really true, but it can feel like it). Other bars in the area (along Madison Ave or up closer to the Green Line stop) are going to be a little nicer, friendlier and you're probably less likely to get hepatitis.

A woman seated near the entrance informed us there was a $10 cover charge for males. My friend and I paid, while our wives were allowed in for free. Not even ten feet inside, the same security guard stopped us and said the cover was actually $20 per person. I pushed back on this, and he ultimately let it go. Once inside, we realized we were the only customers in the entire bar. The music was extremely loud--so loud that we couldn't hear each other speak--but we ordered drinks anyway. My wife later approached the security guard to ask about the inconsistent cover charge, given that the bar was completely empty. When my friend's wife went over to join her, another security guard intervened and told them they needed to relax and that they were not allowed to touch each other, even though they were simply holding hands. After witnessing this interaction, we stood up and approached the security guards to understand what the issue was. Unfortunately, the response we received was rude and disrespectful, especially toward paying customers. To avoid further confrontation, we chose to leave. Based on this experience, we will not be returning to R Place.
