Had a pleasant experience here a few days ago. We were celebrating a friend's birthday. She wanted something low key and this was perfect. It wasn't too busy. Becky was our server and she was great. There's outdoor and indoor seating. There's a cool speakeasy downstairs called, "Blind Pig." I went once and had a great time. The menu offers enough options for everyone to find something. I wasn't starving so I opted for the Thai beef salad. It was very filling and tasty. I enjoyed the elderflower cosmo. I would get it again. The prices are fair! They do have happy hour! I like the Dive Bar & Grille. Great location and friendly staff. Today's visit was different from past experiences. Sitting at the bar, service was slow, and several minutes had gone by before we received any services. I ordered the Flank Steak Frites, beans and rice, and sautéed spinach. I ordered my steak medium-rare. About half of it was a touch over medium. Good flavor, but I only ate half. The espresso martini was good. Great spot to enjoy the nice weather. They have a patio deck with outdoor seating that overlooks the river and other buildings. We came with a group of 6 and enjoyed a variety of food including burgers, salad, chicken and Reubens. The tarot tots are amazing and come as a side option. This place is where Ramshead used to be. It has a large menu, large selection of draught beers and other drinks. I didn't see any mocktails. They have some weekday specials and host trivia. They have multiple different places to sit. There were two large tables on the side which were nice to sit large parties of 8-12ish. The menu was huge with lots of options. Not a lot on the menu got me excited but I was pleasantly surprised with the drunken shrimp. It had good flavor and a little bit of spice. They fried over the shrimp tails which was a little hard to figure out where to eat and not eat. Only three other patrons were seated, yet no staff checked back in after dropping the food at my table. My order was "no onions" -- but it came with onions anyway and too well done. Attention to detail clearly wasn't on the menu. On the positive side, the space is nicely decorated, with a classic Mill look that gives it character. Unfortunately, the food and service lived up to the "Dive" part of the name. They missed the mark here. Maybe they perform better when it's busier? If so, that's not a great business model. The dive bar and grill is anything but a dive bar. The food is excellent, the ambience is slightly more upscale but the prices are reasonable. Stopped in before the ghost tour which would be taking me through the mill mall. This place had some loaded nachos which were some of the best I've ever had. Plenty of chips, plenty of toppings, and layers is cheese. Additionally I had the Brussel sprouts which were good but the chips were better. I also had a Moscow mule while here and it was typical. We came here for lunch on a busy November Saturday. Dive Bar (bottom part) was pretty empty for reasons unknown. The top part was not open. Two of us enjoyed our "bowls" (the house name for fancy salads) very much. With dressing served on the side without having to ask, I managed my caloric intake as well as possible in a restaurant setting. My chef salad was served in a manner that made it simple to isolate (and largely avoid) the bacon and cheese components, which was my objective. Again, without having to ask. Non-dieters will find the going here much easier. The menu, call it upscale pub-fare, is anything but divey. Our third table-mate had one of the sandwiches served with house chips. It was immense; our salads were too. While prices are a bit steep ($60 or so for three of us, including taxes,tip and one soft drink). Another Happy Hour review, you ask? Absolutely! I visited Dive Bar with a group last Friday. I wasn't sure exactly where it was until I pulled up and realized it's in the Savage Mill building - how exciting! I hadn't been there in years. The venue, formerly home to Rams Head Live, offers plenty of space, with both an upstairs and downstairs area that can accommodate many guests. We tried a few dishes, starting with the Buffalo Wings flavored with Old Bay. They were okay, but nothing too exciting. The flavor was there, but they didn't stand out as anything special. The Hanger Steak & Fries was ordered by a friend and she said it was good although it was cold. I did try the fries from another's plate since my food was still not out yet and the were good - love places that cut their own fries! When my food finally came, I dug into that hummus! The platter was decent. The hummus itself was tasty, and I liked the addition of tomato, which balanced the saltiness well. However, I wasn't a fan of the black bean dip. I tried it, but didn't go back for more as it just didn't suit my taste. I ended up dipping everything (except my naan) in the hummus, trying to keep it low carb. I also enjoyed the Baked Pretzel Sticks, though the beer cheese wasn't what I expected. It was thick and lacked the smooth, cheesy flavor I was hoping for. One of my friends had the Crab Dip and said it was good - though I didn't get to try it. It looked like the usual crab dip without lump meat, so I wasn't too excited to try it myself. The standout for me was the Passion Fruit Paloma - it was amazing! I enjoyed it so much that I had others at the table try it too. While it wasn't on the happy hour menu, it was only $10 and definitely worth it. One downside was the service. Initially, the drinks weren't being made at the bar, which was confusing. As the night went on and service remained slow, we ended up going to the bar ourselves to place drink orders. I'm not sure if there's a separate bar for diners, but that could explain why drinks were taking longer than expected. The biggest issue, though, was the wait for food. We noticed that people who arrived after us were getting their food before we did, which was frustrating. I was PLEASANTLY surprised by this place. First off, it's right above the Antiques Mall at Savage Mill. It is a pretty nondescript restaurant. Very pub style set up. The menu looks like it was made by the guy who does Bar Rescue. Our service was great though. Very attentive. Also, I was legit SURPRISED by some of the food I hate there. We got these things called "Chicken Poppers" which imagined to be popcorn chicken bites (as they were like under the wings section of the menu). But they were more like tenders than anything. This section was pretty confusing though - I literally had to ask our waiter for clarification. I imagine this happens often, cause they provided a pretty solid explanation. Basically, that section is "anything your heart desires." We got the buffalo/garlic parmesan (which was one flavor). These were SO GOOD. Like legit... I want them right now. My friend got this steak and cheese bowl that was literally served over a giant mount of tater tots. He let me taste some, and it was epic. It was REALLY rich and heavy though, so he took home a good portion of it. But it was legit really tasty. I ended up getting the chicken sandwich with house cut fries. The house cut fries were meh. I had been to the Dive Bar when they first opened a few years ago and was unimpressed. Had the chance to go back and my thoughts have slipped 180 degrees. It is a great setting at the Historic Savage Mill. They have indoor and outdoor seating as well as a basement speakeasy. The food is bar and comfort food with little twists and upscales. The staff is very friendly and helpful but give you space to chill. It also was refreshingly quiet where you could have a solid conversation. Started out well, food was good with the exception of soft fries which the did offer to replace but we declined. My biggest complaint is why servers do not remove the plates and glasses once we were finished. They come to the table several times to ask if we need anything else. We had clearly finished eating but the dirty dishes were left on the table. I finally had to ask the server to remove them. Lastly, nothing has changed as far as the decor, same as it was when it was Ramshead ( which I miss a lot). Hubby and I ordered their soft pretzels appetizer, grilled balsamic veggie wrap with tater tots, black and bleu burger, and 2 drinks for an approximate balance of $65. What's Hot - Menu. Pretty good variety. There appears to be something for everyone, even vegans. - Quality. Pretty good. Their soft pretzel sticks appetizer were pretty soft and warm. No additional salt and still flavorful. I would recommend their tater tots over their fries (see below). The balsamic veggie wrap I ordered was pretty tasty, especially because the veggies were tender and still warm. My friend ordered their balsamic brussel sprouts, which were tender, tasty, and with a hint of sweetness. - Service. We were a group of 9 people and asked the waitress to split our checks accordingly. She did a good job of tracking everyone's orders and ensuring that we had a couple of pitchers of water at our table. - Price. Pretty reasonable, especially given the portions. Good value for money. What's Not - Quality. Their fries aren't very good. They're soft and tender, but not seasoned at all (i.e., as in no salt). Although my balsamic veggie wrap was good, there wasn't a very good balsamic vinegar flavor that I could taste (i.e., no sweetness). Disappointing, because I expected more. Hubby's black and bleu burger also appeared to be lacking in bleu cheese. It was there, but the portion was lacking. - Service. They appear to be somewhat short staffed, so be prepared for slow service. Also, hubby and I were charged automatic gratuity. I presume this is because our whole group was 9 people, but I was surprised that our final tab for 2 people included automatic gratuity. Depending on the size of your group, be aware. - Parking. There is a parking lot behind the main building, where the restaurant is located. However, this parking lot can get full easily, especially depending on the day and time you're there. There's an overflow parking lot, which is further down the end of the block and requires more walking. Not bad, but depends on the weather. I'll start by saying we live in the neighborhood so trust me when I tell you that I desperately want Dive Bar to be good... I mean everyone wants to walk to a restaurant/bar, right? Literally everything is bad... consistently. Service? There isn't any. You'll see your server maybe once. Drinks dry, condiments needed, etc. On top of that, most of our servers/bartenders have had an attitude and are definitely not helpful. Food quality? Ew. I do not understand anyone who says it's good. It's pretty standard for it to be cold and definitely wrong. Everything tastes like it's straight from the freezer and absolutely the bottom of the barrel, lowest cost inventory items for sure. We do keep trying and giving it many new chances because it's SO close and tempting on nights when I don't want to cook. But believe me, it's not worth it. Ever. What a waste of time and money. The food was awful and the service was the same as before, not great. The crispy Brussel sprouts were overly sauced but ok. In my mind I assumed it would be great downstairs given its from the same restaurant. We had intentions on ordering two apps and two entrees but the apps were not good AT ALL. The crab dip was so oily and bland. The calamari tasted like flour and was soggy. We explained this to our server and her entire demeanor changed. She told us she had to go make 7 waters for other patrons at the bar , and that she would return after. 15 minutes later, and after watching her carry on with other staff, it was clear that she was was not ok with the fact that we had an issue with our food. We paid for the crab dip as my friend said he could "doctor it up" at home, but we returned the calamari. I love this place - the ambience is bar rustic with more light if that makes sense. The service is great - asked all the right questions and got our food out quickly. The food...this menu is great and I have never had a bad selection - when your food arrives it is as good looking as it tastes and that is a huge difference - caring about what comes out is just as important as the taste - if it looks bad then...it is likely the same. The shrimp tacos were great looking and even better tasting! The turkey Gouda melt was tasty and we both left happy about everything. We live close but rarely come here because the service is so poor. We decided to give it another shot and it hasn't gotten better. Staff are apathetic at best. The seem to be sleep walking through the day and it may be due to the aroma from extra curricular activities. This has gone down hill since its opening a few years ago. The floors felt dirty and sticky. Our table was also a little tacky. The hostess prior to seating us took a napkin and swiped across the table. That should have been a hint. The food is still good but not what it was when the Dive Bar opened. I ordered the steak salad which tasty. The steak was cooked a little past medium and the steak was a little fatty. Two of us at the table ordered the steak salad that included a side of fries which wasn't brought. When we asked only one of us received our fries. Nice enough, but not too nice, if you know what I mean, and they consistently have events. Girls Night out!!! The staff was super friendly and courteous. My friend had her toddler, and besides him being the cutest baby ever, the server was super friendly and catered to him as well. We sat on the back patio, and it was beautiful; I could not wait for spring and summer nights to enjoy it better. The food was good. This place is such a toss up- sometimes it's spectacular, others it's a travesty. This last time was bad enough to keep us away for a while and hope they have some turnover. The food all looked wonderful but most of it was dry and over cooked. It was uncommonly dead this last time but we couldn't get our server to our table for the life of us. Each time we needed something (to include putting in our food order, alerting them someone gave us another table's order, getting our check) one of us had to leave the section and go all the way to the bar for assistance. We have been back multiple times since my first review and have continued to be super happy with the food. Everything we have tried has been delicious. We have noticed the 2 most recent times we have been, service is extremely lacking. Friday night, we were sat and it took our waitress about 10 minutes to come by and take our drink order. At that point we were ready to order everything because we didn't want to have to wait again. We asked to *start* with the honey mustard chicken poppers. For my meal, I ordered the Italian Job Hoagie with tater tots. The grilled chicken was fantastic, nice fresh mozzarella. The bread was amazingly fresh as well. As you can see from the photo, I got my husband's order of fries and he got my order of tater tots. Not a big deal, but still not what was ordered. My husband ordered the Knuckle Sandwich which he finished all of and stated was delicious. Now, when our food was getting delivered, we said that we had ordered an appetizer to come out first and we didn't get it yet. Our waitress finally came by and we told her we didn't want the appetizer anymore. At that exact moment, it showed up. The manager came over and said they would take it off the bill and we could still have it since it just came out. That was extremely nice of them and we appreciated it. The poppers were delicious. This is not the first time that we've had the app come out with the dinner or right after the dinner and we always have to crane our head to get attention from anyone. This experience, the server dropped the check to never appear again and we had to have the manager process the payment for us. We truly enjoy the food and will keep coming, but in order for them to grow their business and attract more customers, they really need to figure out proper training for their staff. We also HIGHLY recommend visiting the basement! They have pool, electronic darts, electronic golf, and skee ball. It was so much fun playing lots of games. TLDR: Fine food/service if you're looking for something quick and simple, but can be inconsistent and there's better places to try in the area. Ok, we've been going to the dive bar for quite some time since we live close by and it's perfect for an easy lunch or dinner, but have recently decided it's not worth visiting anymore. At first the main issue was the lack of service due to them being understaffed or under new management, but the food was decent so we moved past it. Then service improved but the food seemed to be declining in quality, but again a the convenience made us keep coming back. The last straw was placing an order over the phone for burgers only to receive burgers with soggy sandwich bread instead of burger buns. Not sure why they couldn't call us back and let us know they had no more buns or had changed their burgers? I debated a two or three star review. Had a bacon burger that was decent, good flavor, bacon was good overall a pretty tasty burger with some tots that were cooked just right. So far a generally happy camper. As for the service that's where things go a bit downhill. Now granted I was in a booth in the bar area and it was after lunch so the bartender was also the server so I cut him some slack there. I decided on a dessert to go and then things go wrong. I settle the bill, about 28 dollars, with 40 and ask for change on the 10, he brings me back 10 in change - not 12 or 11 and change. Then I wait, and wait, eventually he comes back with my to go dessert and a "oh I forgot you were here". Seriously? There are two other patrons at the bar and me. So in my opinion he had three strikes, never checked on my drink (gave him a bye there, bartender and all that). Made an assumption on the tip which I absolutely hate, and "forgot I was there". We've eaten here before, and the food was unmemorable, but not bad. This time, we were waiting for a table because the kitchen was backed up, so we decided to get drinks while we waited. We went over to the end of the bar near the host/entrance. All bar seats at that end were open, but we stayed standing there to order, since our son was with us. After about 10 minutes of the bartender looking over and ignoring us, I sat down in a bar seat in case she didn't realize I wanted to order, while my husband continued to stand nearby with my son. We waved, and she finally came over, only to say that we can't sit there. I let her know that we just wanted to order drinks to have while waiting for a table. She responded by saying loudly that we have to leave because we have a kid (who was only near the bar since there was nowhere else to wait, but he wasn't seated). I told her that I understood, pointed out that he was not sitting, and asked if I could order drinks and stand with the drinks while we waited. She said that she can't serve me because I have a kid, and rudely and loudly emphasized that this was against the law. I am aware of the laws, go out to eat often, and felt this was very disrespectful and rude (especially in front of a kid). We cancelled the table reservation, left, and won't be back. read more
