Rarely do yelp reviews mislead me but the ones here really did a number on me. Ok let's start with the two bartenders: Bartender # one had an attitude. She clearly didn't want to be there and she was not afraid to show it. Bartender # two definitely didn't take her meds coz she was acting mental. I was afraid to place my order with her but I had to take the risk. As for the food it was average. The Kentucky bourbon wings were too dry and I'm pretty sure the sauce was from the grocery store, I've tested that S@$t before. My gf had the Caribbean tilapia sandwich and the bread was soggy but the tilapia was well seasoned so for that they get 1 star. Bottom line I would never recommend this place to anyone or go back. read more

I'm conflicted about this place. There's an awesome beer selection, and the staff was awesome. But I had the pulled pork sandwich, which was really greasy-super let down. My husband had the jerk chicken sandwich which was so spicy he couldn't eat it (and the menu didn't list it as spicy). I'm thinking maybe we just made the wrong choice of what to get, so I would consider coming back and maybe trying a burger or something. Though I lived only a block away from this establishment I cannot believe I have only visited this place thrice! Maybe it is because I do not drink so much. I have been coming down to this bar to watch the playoffs, and for all you sports fans, it will not dissapoint. Tvs everywhere showing all the sports you want! They have a very huge draft beer menu which is a plus. You can definitely explore all the different kinds if beer. There is a special where you get mussels and beer for $12. I highly recommend it! Long time Dive Bar regular who usually comes with a group of guys, last night, friend Jon and I brought our wives. We were greeted warmly by two of our favorite servers, Megan & Shira; seated at our favorite table and served. Jon and I had an IPA from the chalk board that I'd never tried before, which was fantastic -- really hoppy. My wife had a pinot grigio, Jon's, just water. For dinner, we stuck to the same recommendation I always make to first timers -- check the special menu first -- and split two different kinds of sliders and a shrimp po' boy, and a plate of french fries. I love dive bar. I live next door to it. However, on Saturday the Bieber haired bartender decided it was funny to start playing R. Kelly (the lifetime documentary had just come out about his sexual assaults) with a stupid smirk on his face. This wasn't a radio station or some automated spotify playlist. The staff here is awesome. This place has a really fun relaxed vibe! Some of the food isn't great, skip the French Onion soup for example. But the Taylor Ham Bodega sandwich is HEAVEN. I do have to say that i really enjoy this bar. I've been here on several occasions and just made a trip here this past Friday. The quality of the food is pretty high up there and I dare say rivals that of a restaurant. The beer choice is by far one of the largest I've come across in the Upper West Side. The atmosphere here is one that fits the name of Dive Bar so I won't be redundant in trying to describe it. Great music selection accompanied by relatively inexpensive drinks, and that's New York wide and not just in comparison to the neighborhood. I've been here with just my girlfriend, with a group of friends, and I guess when the mood strikes and I feel in dire need of a drink and some top class bar food I will eventually make a trip here alone. I have a few friends in the neighborhood so have been a few times now. Overall a great relaxed bar where you can kick back and enjoy a few drinks. Bartenders are very friendly and prices are reasonable for the area. They have a very large selection of beers and even have the jug-o-beer to go! So you can get some great draft beers to take home and have a nice night cap. Food selection is very diverse with everything from burgers to good selection of vegetarian dishes. read more

I went there specifically for poutine and I was througly disappointed. I've never had poutine so I can't tell how far off this is from the original, but I can see they simply didn't bother using the proper ingredients, and they just substituted them with the stuff they use for the rest of the american food on their menu. The fries were the "generic" thin fries that they also serve as side dish, while poutine seems to use thicker fries. The cheese was the usual mozzarella-like pizza cheese, not cheese curds. I can't comment on the gravy. They had a pretty good selections of beer though, which is nice if you're not going for a poutine. Also I had a muffoletta on top of that and it was quite good, although humongous (split it with somebody for your own sake!). Might go again, but definitely not for poutine. This place is my favorite bar!!! It starts with the service and all of the staff could not be friendlier. They are also interesting people, and I have had some great conversations with the bartenders over the years. But what really makes this place special is the selection of beers and the food. There are dozens of beers to choose from, both draught and bottled and they always have one or two beers on cask as well. The bartenders are very knowledgeable about the beer and can help you navigate your way if you don't know exactly what you want. The food is more akin to a gastropub than a "dive bar". There are classics like an English or Irish breakfast as well as wings, etc. but there is also more esoteric fare like spicy gumbo with beef shoulder or shakshuka which is an absolutely delicious middle eastern dish with soft boiled eggs in a spicy vegetable stew with feta cheese. Yum!!! They also have one of the best burgers in the city with many many variations. Or perhaps you fancy lobster macoroni & chesse.... you get the idea! Dive Bar is a fantastic community bar/restaurant, that hit the trifecta of what I look for in a casual dinning experience. First, the food is delicious: the portions are massive, and at no cost to the taste. I highly recommend the mac and cheese, which was plentiful and flavorful. If I hadn't been so stuffed, I would've picked at my friends loaded nachos and massive sandwich (I think it was a cuban sandwich). My vegetarian friends were thrilled to see the pretty significant selection of non-meat options (she got the vegetarian reuben). Second, the beer selection is spot-on: there were a wide array of options, and reasonable NYC prices. I had an oatmeal stout, and it didn't disappoint. Third, the service was great. Our waitresses were so friendly, and provided helpful recommendations when I was looking through the menu. I'm definitely going to be a regular here. This is my favorite little gem in the UWS, or all of Manhattan, really. The food is great and the bartenders are better. I've spent three weeks each month for the last three months this summer and fall in NYC for work and have spent my Sundays watching football at this place. Sarah, Olivia, Jessie, and Theresa are the usual bartenders on Sundays for the day games and they are AWESOME!!! They have always made me feel welcome and are just all around pleasant and engaging in conversation. Get the Mussels Special. $16 for a pot of steamed mussels (in hoegaarden with onions), a plate of fries, and a pint (bud light, Stella Artois, or Hoegaarden). That's a steal anywhere in the city. I have just called to place a $30 take out order for me and my wife. The phone was answered by a very polite bartender. When I told her i want to order delivery, she asked me to hold for a minute and then told me this (not realizing I have been a chef for well over 30 years and I live around the corner from Dive Bar), they are too busy right now for me to place an order. She suggested I call back in an hour. We ended out conversation with me making a comment that as a chef, i would never turn away business. Benn going here on and off for years. So I have been here a bunch of times and the most recent time was marathon Sunday after I ran the marathon. I can not tell you how great everything was. The food was, and always is, fantastic. We had the Beth Beyer, which is an Eggplant Parm sandwich, a bunch of wings (sauce on the side!), a pretzel bread Caprese (my favorite dish of theirs). This is not your average "bar food". I have heard from a friend of mine who goes there often that the owner locally sources most of his food...bread from local bakers, fresh vegetables, etc. So Marathon Sunday...the thing that I love most about this place is the atmosphere and the warmth and how amazing the staff is. We walked in with our marathon medals on and the bartender, Althea, started clapping for us. The whole place erupted into applause and cheers and it wasn't just for us: Every time someone walked in who it looked like they had run the marathon, everyone in the place gave them a big applause. The Dive Bar is a place with great food, an incredible beer and liquor selection, a warm and loving feel, and a staff who will treat you like they have known you for years, even if it's your first time stopping in. I have been going to the Dive Bar on 96th and Amsterdam for about 5 years now. I think yesterday was my last trip. The waitstaff seems to lack training and a basic understanding of how to wait tables. A few weeks ago, my partner and I sat at a table for 15 minutes without even being given a menu. Yesterday, we asked for the remainder of our meal (half of my actual meal) to be wrapped for take home...the waitress either forgot or did not hear me (I have never been in a restaurant (even a bar) where the waitstaff did not ask if you wanted food left on your plate to be wrapped but not here!) so anyway, she threw everything out! The bar has a wonderful variety of vegetarian items and the veggie Ruben is truly a work of art. HOWEVER, what comes out of the kitchen will be anyone's guess. For example, my son ordered the mac and cheese with jalapenos; the first time it had so many peppers it was inedible, the second time (yes, he ordered it again) it was great, the third time the peppers were raw (and the cheese was gritty). This happens with all the menu items from onion rings to burgers. Truly becoming a more and more disappointing experience. read more

I wanted to love this local place so much BUT......... to my disappointment, I could never. The first time I went, our waiter was not knowledgeable about their menu. For working at such an small and intimate place I feel as though they should know it like the back of their hand. My first unpleasant experience was not going to stop me from trying it again. The second time I went however, was an actual disaster. Service was snail slow and when I tried to get the attention of a waiter other than the one I originally received, I got snapped at by a nasty woman. Clearly I knew that she weren't my waitress but I was not getting any damn help. When I finally found my waitress, I'm pretty certain that MY waitress was on a date herself because she was sitting down having a conversation with someone. When I went up to her and asked her for the check she laughed and rolled her eyes and apologized to her FRIEND. The waitresses were super helpful with accommodating our large group, and the owner Lee clearly wants to support the community and be a fixture on the UWS. In this day and age, we need more reliable and friendly places like Dive Bar in this changing neighborhood. There was a great beer selection. There probably aren't enough good things to be said about the atmosphere and staff at Dive Bar. While they are all fantastic, Olivia is just a dynamo. Her efficiency behind the bar is unparalleled and her boisterous personality sets the bar aglow. Being in her presence is equivalent to a master class in improv comedy, and man... that voice. I come here often for lunch. They have got a really really good selection of craft beers on tap. I'm a Guinness drinker and so the first time I came in, ordered one at the bar and the, not so chatty, barman poured it straight... needless to say I will never get a guinness here again. But the beers are very good, big fan of Hoegarden so that's a nice substitute for my stout. I've eaten a few things here, almost always off the lunch special menu (at $8 for a side and main it is pretty damn good for the UWS). I always order the sweet potato fries and they are always done perfectly. Some of the sandwichs can be a bit hit and miss. The pulled pork is lovely, the pork coated in a rich, sweet, barbecue style sauce but when I got the grilled chicken sandwich it was anything but grilled. As soon as i picked it up grease dripped down from the bun which was very disappointing as my chilli side dish was lovely. The atmosphere can be good, especially for a uws bar, at night. Good beer, often good people too. It also makes a good, quiet lunch spot. I'll be back. read more

Great neighborhood bar!! From the inside this bar looks like it could have been anywhere around the world. Just a simple friendly neighborhood hang out with ZERO presumptuousness. Everyone was having a great time, and folks seemed generally happy and friendly. Surprisingly extensive menu. The bartenders Howie and Mimi were also great and also seemed to be enjoying themselves which was nice. It was a great mix of people; different races, ages, gay/straight, etc. Glad to see the owner calling out the ridiculous haters on Yelp....reminds me why I love NY. read more
