Games galore. Any board or card game you want to play they probably have. It's truly a great concept and their collection is impressive, but whatever you do, please do yourself a favor and skip the food. I think this experience will have me scarred for a bit. We had the unfortunate idea to grab some food here as we enjoyed some games (btw it's $15 a person to play indefinitely as long as they have space for your group). We ordered the burger, chicken sandwich, Cajun fries, hummus and pita and tater tots. For such a spacious location, they must have a play kitchen because most of the food was inedible. The "best" thing about my chicken sandwich (three tenders- was not even a patty) was the brioche bread. The "best" thing about the hummus was the pita. My friend took two bites of the burger and felt sick. We thought we had been pranked but felt sad about throwing so much food away. Just don't do it. I don't want to think about this food ever again. If you must, apparently the coffee was good and they have other drinks and pastries (which they hopefully outsource!). read more

Hex & Company is such a great concept combining a café with board games is genius! The space is open and inviting, and walking in immediately brought back waves of nostalgia thanks to the classic games I grew up with. It's the perfect spot for a casual game night with friends or even a first date, it definitely makes for a fun and easy icebreaker. They offer a nice selection of small bites, desserts, beer, and coffee, which adds to the relaxed and social vibe. I really appreciate that they also host events, which adds another layer of community to the experience. That said, I was a bit disappointed with the coffee..it had a burnt espresso taste that threw it off. Also, a couple of the games we picked were missing pieces, so my partner and I couldn't fully enjoy them. That was a bit of a letdown. Still, the staff was super friendly, and the overall atmosphere was great. My friend and I found Hex & Co wandering around Morningside Heights and decided to circle back another night. We went on a Tuesday without a reservation and it was packed!! We didn't realize there was an event that evening but we were still able to be seated to play board games. They had all types of board games from vintage, to new, modern and the unheard of! The unfortunate part about this review is that some of the games were missing pieces so it wasn't as fun or engaging :( I understand that some of these games might have been difficult to acquire but I wish there was a better system to persevere the actual board games/pieces that go along with it. The menu sounded good so I ordered the chicken tenders with chipotle aioli, my friend had a Moggel Mocha and croissant. The chicken was okay, nothing worth noting, just a little cold. The coffee was burnt and not appetizing. The croissant was buttery and flaky. Overall I would still recommend going to Hex & Co because it would be a great beginning or ending to a date, great for groups or as a way to enter the gaming community. The Pokémon cards they sell are double the price they should be according to TCGplayer and I hear it's the same for other cards as well

$10 entry per person at the front. There's lots of sturdy wooden tables on which many patrons have set up Magic the Gathering (MtG) tournaments or Dungeon and Dragons (D&D) games. I'd recommend going early to get a table as it can get pretty crowded. There's a decent menu, with a fair amount of drink options (including alcoholic). Personally, I wouldn't order anything here again - while not necessarily expensive (it's all around $9), almost all the hot options are just microwaved frozen food, and taste as such. I'd avoid the pizza but the chicken strips were actually not too bad. They really have an endless number of board games to borrow and play. If you can think of a game, they probably have it (or duplicates of it). They also have many game accessories for sale such as sculptures, dice, various trading card game packs, and even some board games themselves. And they also have a little area for painting figurines near the register, with everything for sale. My one complaint is that staff isn't exactly friendly. While not rude, the woman at the front of the register was rather ... gruff. I didn't feel very welcome and I could tell she just wanted to go home. I guess I'll chalk it up to the store being busy and crowded, but I wish the workers were a bit nicer. read more

It disappoints me seeing that I'm not the only one who's dealt with this, but I figured I should share my story so you all know to STAY AWAY: Placed a preorder for some cards well in advance. I had to reach out multiple times just to get any updates. Eventually got a response shortly before the release, only to be told that the original preorder pricing wouldn't be honored. On top of that, not all the items I ordered were available. Overall, extremely disappointing service. I won't be ordering from them again. read more

I am not one to post a review unless its either a great experience or terrible. I would NEVER recommend Hex&Co. Find you another place to do business. Long Story short - Preorder early for some cards (in February) and paid a preorder fee ($10). I follow up to get more information on my preorder since I had not heard anything from them (3 weeks before the preorder in MAY). They responded that "No info has gone out yet, I expect it to go out in the next week". A week pass by and nothing so I reach out to them again and their response "All people who placed orders received an update email a week ago, more info was also posted on our discord" I was of course very confused and concern that I was going to losse my preoder. So I reach back and their response is that they could only honor my regular order. All through this I have been asking for price data, timing of preorder, and just all the BASIC information you would expect from paying for something! When they finally replied they did not honor the preorder price. I was not able to get all the items I wanted, and their excuse was "We posted it on discord so you should have know". They never sent me a discord page when I asked for information so not sure how i would magically know they posted it their discord. TERRIBLE customer service, find somewhere or just dont do business with them. Could not recommend LESS!! read more

Hex & Company is a tabletop game store, cafe, and bar. As of this writing it seems they're doing well, as they have two locations with a third on the way. While waiting for an event to start nearby, I stopped in for a beer and to take a look. I'm sorry I didn't have more time to enjoy the gaming aspect as it seemed like many people were. They had a few tables of outdoor seating. Inside they had an area of game and card supplies at the cashier area. To the left is the table area and countless games. The tables are clearly marked on whether the games were available to play, or for purchase (which if you did purchase, you could also play there). Play is not free, it was $10/person which covered the use of the space and cleaning of the games. I saw once played, you put the games on a cart to be re-sorted and cleaned. They also have a full cafe and bar; they had an excellent selection of draft beer, which is really why I stopped. Their glassware is cool and fits the game vibe. They also had a full back room perfect for parties and group events. The staff was very welcoming, explaining how it all worked. Restrooms are large and clean, toward the back. I enjoyed my beer outside; it's a great place to take a break or stay for a while and play some games. read more

I love this little board game cafe and have been here many times in the 4 years I've lived in the city. They have a menu that is affordable and many different flavors of syrup to choose from for coffee beverages which I love. Normally they also have kind baristas who are happy to fill your order and are, in my experience, very attentive to detail. Unfortunately, this week I've gone here twice and been disappointed both times. I came in the morning both days around 10/11 am and the barista was incredibly rude and couldn't be bothered to even answer my questions with kindness. They were snippy and short with me and seemed very unhappy to be there. I'm not asking for sunshine and rainbows; people have bad days and I get that. In fact I was willing to look past the bad service and come back again later in the week but the same barista treated me poorly again with flippant responses, sighs, and talking under their breath after I asked for the coffee I ordered that they forgot to make. I gently pointed out that my coffee was supposed to be iced not hot and they muttered something else before I just accepted the hot drink and moved on. I've never seen such hostility and aggravation from Hex & Co and I hope to not see it again if I ever choose to return. read more

Too bad it is in NYC and not in New Jersey where we live, though I guess the inconvenience of the commute will prevent us from dropping hundreds of dollars each week on board games. This is a board game cafe with a nice counter, tables to play at and food and drink options, but it worked better for us as a board game store. They have a whole wall of games to buy and a much smaller section of games to play. Though you can buy a game, open it and play there. By board games I mean Settlers of Catan plus - games like Gloomhaven, Ark Nova, Terra Mystica, Everdell, etc etc. They also had kids games which very much appealed to our toddler. The people working at the store were very knowledgeable about board games and could offer some good recommendations based on the board games that we play. read more

I love this place!! I love the prices! I love that they have snacks and coffee! I love the decor! I love the selection of games! I love that it doesn't feel congested! I've only ever been to the Uncommons before and this place is so refreshing compared to that location. It's $10 per person on weekdays ($5 for students). It's $15 if you want to make a reservation to secure a table. I was able to get one with no issues but the school year has started so there might be a wait. I played a good amount of games and wasn't given a time restriction but I left after about 3 hours. I think if there's a wait to get in then they might kick you out but that's reasonable. They also have games for purchase. You can also just go in for food and not any games if you want. The food itself was a little lackluster. The potato latkes were soggy and the pierogis were ok. The grilled cheese with fig spread was delicious tho!! It is a very small portion but worth it! read more

Leaving this review so people who look like myself know they might not be as welcomed as other patrons here. I came here yesterday with my friend and asked if there was availability, and a worker went around the back, then came back to me at the front and shared that I should find anywhere back there to sit. There was only 1 area that wasn't occupied by friend groups, so we sat there. We enjoyed our game for an hour, then another worker said we need to move and that anyone would have had the sense to know to not sit at the large group seating. May I remind you, this was the only actual spot available when I came, and I was told by a worker to sit anywhere at the back. She scurried off after stating that last line, then another worker came instead. I made him know that she was highly disrespectful and should apologize, but he instead doubled down on being disrespectful (even said I should have seen the empty 6-seater, and go back up to the front and say 'actually, nothing seems to be available'..). Clearly, logic had no place here, but still, I said nothing disrespectful back, didn't shout, etc. even though it could have been justified. I decided that while I spent my money for my friend and I to be there, it wasn't worth it being subjected to this amount of disrespect by the staff. And as I left, I couldn't help but notice that there was an empty large group table at the other end of the backroom (and it did not have a reservation sign), so they could have used it and left us alone. Even still, I'd have no issue being asked to move, but the way the workers chose to be disrespectful to the black patrons will have myself and my peers second-guessing going to another Hex and Co location again. Unfortunate because we've enjoyed going to other locations (but honestly have spent too much $ in them for a board games spot), but if these are the kinds of workers Hex & Co is comfortable hiring, we should enjoy our evenings elsewhere. And apologies for the long read, I just know I'd want this kind of info shared to me so that I know where people like myself are and aren't welcomed. Such a great space in a great location. The staff are super friendly and helpful. My wife and I just dropped in to spend some time together doing something new and different, and ended up staying several hours playing 2-person games, drinking and laughing. I love board game cafes, so when someone introduced me to this place, I loved it and found myself coming back. For starters, it's $10 cash/card ($5 with a student id) for the whole day until closing. One reason I choose Hex & Co over those board game cafes is that they do not limit you on time for a similar price point. They might ask you to move at a certain time because someone made a reservation at a certain time, but by no means are you kicked out if you can find another free/empty table. They also have a big variety of games along the walls. They do have some organization in how they arranged the games on the shelf. They categorize it by difficulty of strategy, number of players required or popular/classic games. It's pretty useful when searching for specific games or just any game for the number of people in your party. You are welcome to bring your own games. And they even have a wall of unopened board games for purchase. Lastly, they have food/desserts/drinks available if you are hungry/thirsty during your stay. Good vibes. STUPID PRICES. I bought some packs of Lorcana and a Dragon Shield deck box. I try to support local. I knew they marked up the Deck box by 25% (MSRP 39.99 their price $49.99). The Lorcana pack was $12. I didn't realize until I was looking at the price of me beer. When I went inside, they had a small self made sign that said "pre-release prices" that was covered by two other signs. There was no information or explanation of a higher price. I looked online. And there is not a "pre-release pricing" from Disney. This was the price gouging that they chose to keep up with aftermarket pricing. They are the same as a scalper with a building. Disney did something nice for local game stores by selling 2 weeks before big box stores (target/walmart/best buy) got them. And instead of fostering a community, they milk people like me who just want to get an Abu card. I will not be financially supporting this company again. read more

Hex is friggin' awesome. My group and I were here for about four to five hours and had the best time, and I can't wait to bring others here. Board game cafes are the new bars! First of all, I didn't even know this many board games existed. Nerddom knows no bounds, and I love it! I learned so many great games, like Codenames and Bananagrams, and played old favorites, like Scattergories and Cards Against Humanity. They have hundreds, maybe thousands, of options, all categorized in many ways, like number of players, type of game, popularity, etc. You're bound to find one you love, and maybe even buy. $10 per person, $5 for students, and don't forget about the food, as it's surprisingly good. I got the vegan bean chilli and thought it was delicious. Got a Paris tea as well, which was refreshing. Friends got the mac and cheese, beer, and coffee. Overall, food and drinks menu was better than we'd all expected. Best clean fun you can have on a Saturday night, or any night, and so much more spacious and affordable than The Uncommons, too. I recently went to the Hex & Co. UWS location for my 25th birthday and could not say enough great things. We had 15 people attend, so a reservation had to be made in advance and the staff were incredibly easy to communicate with when trying to figure out what would be the best situation for my group (One big table vs. a private room). It was a bit busy when we got there - only two people appeared to be working check-in/the bar despite the location being full - but the wait was not long and the ID/Proof of vaccination checking went rather quickly. Being right across from Columbia University means your ID will absolutely be checked (and rightly so!) The location does not have table service, everything needs to be ordered at the bar, but the food and drinks arrive quickly and were delicious. The mango habanero mead was amazing and I would 100% go back just for that. The game selection was great, and everyone was able to find something that wanted to play, though some of the games had clearly been damaged with use. Overall, it was a great experience and I would absolutely recommend Hex &. Co. for a unique date night or casual get together. It was a fantastic way to spend my birthday. Giving four stars only because it felt unfair to the staff working that there was only one person checking IDs on such a busy night, and because some of the games on the borrow shelf were incomplete and missing pieces. read more

We used to love this place, but something has changed in the last year. The staff act like they are doing you a favor when they help you. They can put on a nice face for your first question or request but then quickly get annoyed and make you feel like you are bothering them. I came in with a few friends, we are all neurodiverse/autistic and there was something about the way they talked or us that felt judgmental. Which is strange because gaming draws neurodiverse folks and some of the staff is as well. But they can be very patronizing. It feels like a bunch of kids who love gaming and have not been trained on customer service or management. I will be finding somewhere else. read more
