This is a great spot. I love the trails for a run or a bike ride. The trail winds up through a shaded grove of oak and walnut trees alongside a small stream, so it looks like a peaceful nature escape right in the city and it really could be! That said, my experience was mixed. The trail is very natural and rugged, way less groomed park and way more nature path through the hills. It's narrow, often overgrown, and there aren't any clear signs, so you're basically figuring it out as you go. Parts of the dirt path get muddy or sandy, and at times it felt like I was pushing through bushes more than hiking a trail. If you're coming expecting a smooth, family-friendly stroll with benches and clear loops, this isn't that kind of place. There's also no restrooms or marked facilities but more of just a small dirt parking area (street parking) and the trail entrance. I did appreciate the quiet, green canopy and the feeling of actually being in nature. It's one of those spots where you have to adjust expectations: come here for a low-key, adventurous walk under trees and through brush, not for a manicured weekend park outing. If you love exploring rugged little local trails and don't mind getting a bit dirty, you'll appreciate it more than someone looking for a casual park vibe. read more

This is one of my favorite hikes/trails. It's an easy to medium hike and you get to walk past some gorgeous homes before you hit the actual trail. When you get to the top of the hill you will experience the most amazing view of the San Fernando Valley! Take it all in! It's adorable but quickly becomes unmanageable. The trails aren't clear, grown over or just washed away. And there is poison oak EVERYWHERE...everywhere but there were some pretty butterflies. Going to take a shower and hope for the best. read more

Navigation was hard at first, I was originally led to Sumatra drive, but this was wrong. I eventually mapped my way by typing in "Dixie Canyon Place" and found the trail. Parking near the entrance is limited, maybe 2-3cars can park. I parked in the residential area before the fork, and just walked up, it was a nice walk. Not crowded. It's a small hike. There is a deviated hiking trail on the left of the red bridge that is clear and non strenuous, good for small dogs. On the right of the bridge it leads up hill and the path is a bit narrower with obstacles, there's a tire swing at a certain point. I didn't get to the end, I'm not really sure if there is an end, but that wasn't the point, I just wanted to walk in nature. It was a nice shaded hike. read more

Heard really good things about this hike but it was disappointing. This is my fault, as I didn't do the research beforehand. It was reallllly overgrown and it was hard to see where the trail went. My friend and I ended up turning around because there were so many fallen trees in the path and it got pretty steep. It was beautiful though with all greenery! If google maps tries to take you to the top of the mountain off muholland, it's wrong. You should park on Dixie canyon ave in a residential neighborhood if you go! read more

Stop for a moment and dig deep into the crevices of your mind where dark thoughts and creepy fairy tales linger. Think about the ones where wolves eat little girls in red cloaks, where witches try to bake children in ovens, and where trees come alive. If you imagine small trails, snakes, and looming trees... then you have just pictured Dixie Canyon Trail. Dixie Canyon Trail is not really a hiking trail. It is more of a edge-path/park in what feels like a backyard at the end of the a residential street (in fact, parking is tough because you must park by apartment buildings at a dead-end street). Yes, you will experience nature in its finest in terms of uninterrupted plant growth, small animals, beautiful mini-pinecones great for craft projects (I know this from experience), and odd bridges which make no sense. Small creeks stream past your feet and if you walk far enough, a large -- make that HUGE-- smooth, circular rock (sadly covered with graffiti) brings you back to California's prehistoric days. However, Dixie Canyon Trail isn't one for experienced hikers, dog walking, or even joggers, because you will be let-down. In fact, it is constantly inhabited by youngsters and teens who visit to smoke pot away from their parents or partake in other unacceptable behaviors. Even my boyfriend said that is what he and his friends did on this trail 20 years ago. Basically, it is great for rebellious teens but not really for those seeking a genuine hike. How are the views? Quite nonexistent unless you count trees (which can be pretty when it is all green). Not to mention, the trail is slippery and consists of walking on hills where the path barely marks the ground. Dixie Canyon Trail could be a great place for location scouts for films/theatre or a great game of hide and seek. Overall, this Dixie Canyon Trail isn't a destination to seek out unless you stumble upon it. Beware of wolves (don't wear red hoods!) read more

A great, quiet place to "get away from it all." Parking is very limited as there are only two spots in front of the park. The trail is very thin so be very careful when walking up. If you're afraid of heights, this trail isn't for you. I wouldn't recommend coming alone as if you fall, there will be no one to help or report it as this place doesn't look like it gets a lot of traffic or isn't patrolled at all. Sign outside says it is a gift of Warren Beatty so must have been landed he owned that he donated. Looks like some people get busy in this park because of how secluded it is as we found a condom wrapper on the ground. People please keep this park clean and pick after yourself! read more

Dixie Canyon Trail isn't what it used to be and has been left in a state of disrepair that it would be safer for the city and the state parks to mark this as a potential hazard. The trail is all the way at the end of Dixie Canyon Place. Please note the difference between Dixie Canyon Place and Dixie Canyon Ave which has another trail that takes you up to Mulholland. That trail is actually quite nice and takes you out onto Beverly Ranch Road and Mulholland while Dixie Canyon Trail off of Dixie Canyon Place takes you into a death trap. The trail is not properly marked and because it has been so overgrown, it's incredibly hard to navigate. Also, the switch backs are quite steep and narrow with many obstacles blocking the path. There was also an issue with the ground giving away because rather than dirt, it was sand. I had a pair of breathable shoes that were literally filled with sand when I got back. Not safe, especially if you plan on going alone. My suggestion would be to follow Dixie Canyon Ave all the way up to the end and take that trail rather than this one at Dixie Canyon place. read more

Very loose footing through the trail. Much of the trail is over grown, a rockslide covered part of the trail and only way to cross was to aim high and go across hopefully making it across the trail without sliding down the entire canyon. I hike often and much of this trail made me nervous. It was very short though, only took about 15 mins to loop around. I did see many lizards, birds, and deer. Afterwards, I wondered up the street through a construction zone and up an undeveloped dirt road that showed amazing views of the city/mountains. read more

I really wanted to love this trail. I'd heard a lot of good things about it from locals, but when we got there, it was super overgrown without a clear path. Felt like we were walking through shrubs just to figure out which way was the right way. Also, there was a dead animal wrapped in a cloth near the entrance the day we went... Overall, just a terrible experience. A few of us fell and tumbled because we couldn't find the path and ended up turning around after being there for only about 20minutes. Not sure who is in charge of keeping this trail, but definitely feel like it needs a lot of TLC. read more

I actually really enjoyed this hike. The fact that we got a little dirty during the hike, is actually something that I enjoyed. The trail is a bit overgrown with trees and bushes, and at some points it becomes quite steep, but all in all it was a nice surprise. When I first looked it up , I thought it might be a nice quick and easy hike with a clear trail ( like most hiking paths in Souther Los Angeles), but it actually was an adventure because it doesn't seem too overly populated. Would definitely do it again. We went through the path twice in one hour, so it is short, but double up if you feel like going another round. Parking is a little difficult because it is in a residential area, but not as bad as Runyon Canyon and unlike Runyon, this place is very shaded (which I love). Tip : Probably not the best to bring dogs on, unless you trust that they won't wander or that they will behave on the trail, because at some parts one bad move might cause a lot of trouble. Also, bring shoes that you are ok with getting muddy, it was pretty muddy and my shoes were filthy when we were done. read more

Such a cool trail that's tucked away from everything else. It's a bit overgrown, but that's what I love about it. It doesn't feel crowded EVER (like Fryman or Runyon) and you really feel like you're somewhere other than The Valley. I normally park in the neighborhood down below and walk up to the trail. I enjoy dixi canyon. True, it's not a very long hike/walk, 2miles is not much. But for some people they need to start off slow and this is a great beginning trail. Lots of negative reviews... Doesn't make sense. You knew before you went it was a baby trail. So why mark it negatively because of that???? There are times when you want a real tough trail, but knowing that this trail is NOT that, I don't think it's fair to score it so low. read more

this hike was great for me. i love paths that are more green than actual dirt, but i can see why this might be a downside and why most people don't like it so much. the trail is pretty thin and muddy from the rain, but it's gorgeous overrun with water and green plants. there's also a tire swing near the start of the trail. for those who like to hike solo or with their dogs, i recommend this one. parking is in a residential area on the street, and you can only park to the right (heading up the road). make sure to carpool or leave your car on dixie canyon and walk up the street until you see the signs and be mindful of the neighbors. read more

Great urban hike for those in dire need of a nature hit but short on time. Beware of the two hikes people here are referring to though: if you follow Dixie Canyon straight up, it actually turns into Dixie Lane, and dead-ends at a short trail in the Santa Monica Mountains. If, however, you follow the street Dixie Canyon, it will curve to the right at a stop sign and take you up the hill by a few houses to a dirt road for yet another short hike but of a different flavor. I personally prefer the road. Better views. read more

YES! I reached this destination on a gloomy Thursday afternoon. I thought the sun would set too soon....but I had to be out in nature again. It's moderately steep, narrow, and you often end up walking O N T H E E D G E. You won't find this place too crowded, but the best part about it is that its serene and the trees form like a canopy above and around you. There isn't a lot of parking, but you can park anywhere on the street. PS. If you get there early enough tomorrow, you will find my red "Beats by Dre" headphones!!!! Enjoy, whoever finds it. P. S. S. So came up here yesterday morning. First of all, the map on here is WRONG. You have to keep driving up Dixie Canyon all the way up until the dead end. (The last bit is a residential area) It is hard to find parking also. Once I made it up there it was awesome! Very natural and wildlife active. Hike isn't too long. Not sure at the end you're supposed to keep going up? But I followed the trail and ended up at the bridge again. OK hike overall. read more

I enjoyed this overgrown trail. Tried to talk my buddy who lives nearby to go with me but instead we did the road version up to Mullholand and back. That was also fun but I really like the overgrown wilderness. Session that stays deep in the park - donated by Warren Beatty! (Very cool Mr Beatty) The trails are kinda easy to follow but you need to pay attention. It's a beautiful setting and hard to believe it's a 2 minute drive down to crazy busy Ventura Blvd. a hidden gem. Wear solid hiking shoes/boots. read more

Easy hike, 2 out of 5. Not a lot of greenery but California is in a drought. The directions are not correct on Yelp. Dixie Canyon Ave is off of Ventura Street in Sherman Oaks, drive all the way up and it starts at the end of the road. My bf and I saw a road a little before the actual trail and walked up there. There was a nice view which lead into somewhat of the backyards of some the homes but you are a good distance away. read more

I copied and pasted the address from yelp to google maps and it showed an odd/off location so I decided to just follow Dixie canyon ave instead. It led us to a cul de sac and the trail is at the end of the street. Its a pretty secluded hike. We didn't see any hikers when we were there. The path is pretty narrow and you are literally on the edge. It's kind of scary for those afraid of heights but mind you, I am a beginner hiker and I managed through it so if you're not super terrified of heights, you'll live. The trail is pretty short. We actually went around it 4 times but still had a great time. The beginning is a bit of an incline which is a definitely a plus! read more

I am not sure I found the right trail, I went to the dead end road through the neighborhood and it was a short hike. Very narrow and very easy to fall down in several areas. I highly recommend going with someone. It was only about 2 miles. read more

I ran into a lot of pointy things. I had a lot of fun and the loops were really exciting to me but there were a lot of pointy plants and at one point I slid down the hill accidentally so now I get to take home some dirt with me on my pants. All in all , super fun times. There is a kumquat hidden on the trail for the next brave couple to endure the trail. It did help me and my partner bond and now I'm considering marrying them. Very nice area. We liked the drive up to the entrance of the hike trail, it was nice looking at the pretty, big houses, but since the entrance was on a residential street parking was limited. We drove up to the entrance and noticed there was parking only on one side of the street so we had to drive back down to find parking. Once we walked back up and entered we noticed the path was pretty dense and covered with plants. Some areas are easier to get through than others but still need to move plants out of the way to pass. We hiked about 10 minutes in dodging and weaving through bushes and under fallen tree branches until we reached an area that we could no longer continue on. We decided to head back when we ran into a couple that mentioned an easier way back. This path was at an incline so be careful when hiking it, the path was pretty narrow so watch out for that when going down. It was very shaded and beautiful, but my husband and I decided we're happy we tried it but unless the hiking trail is made more accessible, we don't think we'll be back. read more

Pretty cozy hike in a subdivision, not long or hard but a good way to kill some time and get a little exercise in before a game of tennis.

This is a really great little "walk in the woods". Very easy, more of a stroll than a hike, but very secluded. I was literally the only person here when I went after work - just me and the crickets and the birds :) The trail is short, so it's good if you're just looking for a quick dose of nature. Someone has put up wind chimes in a few places which is really nice. When you get to the bridge, either go right or left to stay on the path as it loops around. I didn't notice this and went straight and then had to forge my way up a steep hill that was definitely not part of the path. Will be coming back for sure! read more

A good trail. Steep in some areas, but enough flat ground so as not to be super difficult. The full roundtrip is near four miles, so it's quite a good workout. It's a bit of isolation in Sherman Oaks, and the views at the top of the hill are quite lovely. Toward the end of the trail (top/near Mullholland), it does kind of feel like you're going through people's backyards, but there are never really issues with the locals. I wouldn't suggest bringing small dogs, but larger dogs can definitely complete the trail. Generally very clean, though there is the occasional litter - or construction at one of the nearby homes. read more
