Not quite what I expected, nor what I remember of the Dixon's that used to be in Overland Park. While tasty, the culinary world has evolved since the days when Harry S Truman used to rave about his hometown favorite and since I was a child going with my folks to Dixon's. There are simply more robust, flavorful chilis out there now, and this, quite honestly, isn't the best. For the historic and nostalgia value, Dixon's is a must-do when you come to Independence for the other tourism venues. Unfortunately, I just can't say it's worth a repeat trip. read more

A Kansas City Classic, a must do if you live in the area. The chili here is probably different from what you are used to, but it is very good. It is served with or without several things, bean juice, meat juice, cheese, and the servers aren't particularly patient with newcomers. They generally don't take the time to describe the choices offered, so it's a good idea to review the menu before you arrive. Still, the food is really good. This place is exactly what it sets out to be. A diner. It is not fancy, but it is perfect in its stated goal. The chili, as they describe is not your ordinary, over the top attempt at being fancy, gourmet chili. It, like the diner itself, is excellent in its simple approach. What else can you say about Dixon's other then it's unique and awesome! My go to is the all you can eat tacos paired with the pepper vinegar sauce. Every time I've been service and food has always been great! I don't make it to this location very often but used to go all the time when they had one in Lee's Summit. read more

After Stephen's response I realized that two things were missing when we visited and I wrote my review. There was supposed to be spices on the table, or somewhere, where I could "customize" my chili (that would have been a good thing) and, however, the server didn't point this out or inform us that this was available. Where is the no stars? Just walked in, have never been here before. The table was dirty and a blond heavy waitress picked a towel up off the floor and proceeded to wipe our table off with it!! Of course we spoke up and she gave us attitude and said she would go rinse it off!! I don't know about you but I really don't want a little floor with my meal!! TOTALLY GROSS!! In response to the Stephen's response: There were no dirty dishes on the table!! The table was just dirty from the last people who ate there, which I understood because the restaurant was busy. Ate here with coworkers today- my first ever visit! Had the spaghetti chili, and a taco. Brought my bf home a chili and tamale with all the extras. My coworker who loves Dixon's was so excited we were working nearby, as we travel for work often- mostly north of the river. I'm gonna be looking for reasons to come out ofte. Didn't think to get our server's name, but she was SO kind and informative. We could tell she answers all the questions ALL the time, but she never seemed impatient or too busy. Great lunch date! Thank you November 2019: i've been in with my boyfriend at least three times since this visit... He's crazy about it now, too. Whenever we head east of KC we try to stop... Can't believe I finally found a place to have some good chili. Normally I only love my moms, but that was amazing.

I am slight partial to this place. Some guys at work took me here after a long cold wet morning . We stopped in for lunch. Mind you that was years ago. My wife and I were passing through so she mentioned we stop. I love this place. I like the setup and even though this time they mistakenly added beans I will not hold that against them. The meat has so much flavor. They don't skimp on the sides and if you need more they are happy to supply. Oddly enough the place is known for their tacos. Tacos are all you can eat for $8.25. when we showed up, there was one waitress, the place is packed. Four more employees arrived but the place seemed disorganized like they were under different management. Dixon's Chili Parlor is a world unto itself. At lunchtime, the place fills up with construction workers, fire and police personnel, and local office workers. In other words, people who take their lunch seriously.The chili is different than what you would expect, as it is primarily beef and not a lot of filler. These folks set a new standard and even though it's an 86 mile round trip, it's so worth the drive. Also, try their tacos. I think they changed the "greasy" option to "juicy" at some point but I still ask for my bowl to be greasy not "dry". The service is wonderful, very clean and well ran establishment. The night I went it was packed and I had tacos, 20 of them. The tacos themselves really aren't crazy special, but what is special is the combination of ingredients. The shell is PERFECT crispness, just crunchy enough to get a solid bite but doesn't crumble to pieces. The meat is quality as there was little to no grease. Cheese and lettuce are, well cheese and lettuce, but the overall combination is very well worth going back. The only thing I can be critical of, is that there is nothing spicy. No hot sauce, no hot salsa. There is taco sauce and chili vinegar tableside, both very complimenting to the tacos (I'm sure with the chili also) but on a 1-10 spicy scale, 10 being spicy, it's a solid .5 lol. That's my only gripe. I've been wanting to go back ever since my maiden visit. I would recommend anyone to this place as the overall atmosphere, nostalgia, history and reputation are clear when you visit this establishment. To the owner, pleaseeeeeeeeeeeeee offer an actual spicy hot sauce! If not I'll just make sure to bring my own for future visits. 5*price 5*quality 5*value 5*service. Dixon's is one of a kind. Their chili is unique but there's a reason why they've been around so long. Delicious food served VERY fast at great prices. No matter how busy they are the service is always good and food comes out quick. I typically get the spaghetti chili (soupy) with shredded cheese, onions and ketchup, but I've also had the taco salad and both are great! As out-of-towners, our reception was gruff at best. We came for the history and it is a cool building with a cool story but I think once was enough. We had the chili on spaghetti which was on the watery side, and and order of tacos that were pretty good. I have no idea how this place has kept its doors open for over a hundred years. Their chili is an absolute joke. It is bland and just unappetizing. They give you several condiments at the table for you to mix up your chili as if you had any idea as to what you're supposed to use and how much to use. I have been craving Dixon's taco's since before COVID-19 began. I saw the other day on a friend's Facebook post that they were offering a taco kit. So, we ordered it for carryout and it was perfect! It tasted just as good as being in the restaurant! My husband had never eaten at Dixon's before getting the carryout last night and he LOVED it! They say that the memory is the second thing to go. That said, I cannot believe I had forgotten about Dixon's! I know that it has been there forever (Harry Truman used to eat there), and we did have one in Lee's Summit when we first moved back to the Kansas City Area, but I guess it is that "own back yard" deal. Anyway, we stopped by last night with a group of about 20 people (let's put a little pressure on the staff why don't we) around 7:00 pm and were still able to sort out seating. It looks like folks come early for their chili. Dixon's is in an older part of Independence, right on US Highway 40, and has a good size public parking lot. Inside, it looks and feels like an old time diner with formica tables and plastic covered menus. People call this "divey" now days, but I still call it diner. Even with a big group hitting them all at once, the young staff was at the top of the game. Very well trained, efficient while friendly. Ah, the menu. Dixon's Chili is old time, Mexican chili. Loose meat that is either "dry" (plain), "Juicy" (natural meat juices), or "soupy" (with bean broth). There are daily specials, but the most popular is offered every day - all you can eat taco's for $7.89 - that is hard to beat! They do have burgers and great chili dogs (including foot longs!), or try Tamale Spread (3 tamales covered with chili beans and meat) and Spaghetti covered with chili (either with beans or just meat). Extras, like sour cream, grated cheese, peppers, sour cream, and onions to customize your order are available for an additional cost. Pepsi products and draft beer ($9.00 pitchers) are on tap. Back to the service, in a word: outstanding! Seeing younger servers who have polished their craft to a sharp edge shows that there is hope for the industry in the future! A couple can easily enjoy a fulfilling meal for around $20.00, a bit more if you grab the draft beer. For those who remember Maid-Rite, Mug Up, and Nu-Way favorably should find Dixon's refreshing. But if Wendy's Chili is your style you might stick to the burgers, or Taco Bell. read more

I live the opposite side of Kansas City, good 30 miles. But occasionally am over that way. When I'm over there I always debate whether to come to Dixon's, a burger drive in or nicer Italian. Love the spaghetti and chili. Suppose I should try the tacos but finding spaghetti and chili in KC is almost impossible. Been eating at Dixon's for over 45 years. The chili is something you love or hate. Dry loose hamburger. You can add beans. Onions and catsup they "fine" you a small fee. They have a vinegar that has small peppers infused. This isn't the original location. It was downtown KC. Back when Truman was a judge, there where a couple of other chili parlors and competition was fierce. The other two have long gone. Dixon's Chili is not your typical tomato based chili. Meat only is just that, very fine hamburger or chili with beans is; meat & beans. You can request it juicy which has bean broth or soupy which has both meat (grease) and bean broth. You add the chili powder to taste.
