Visited for a quick lunch when my brother and sister in law were in town. We shared fish tacos, Birria tacos, crab guac, and churros. Everything was delicious but the fish tacos were my favorite. The service was really fast and the ambiance was super cute! I definitely want to come back to try more of their menu.

In DC, looking for a memorable dinner experience and chose dLeña. The ambiance is excellent! Because we did not have a reservation, we sat at the bar. I enjoyed my food more than my husband enjoyed his. My favorite thing that I had was the corn empanadas - - I would come here again and again to eat these. They were absolutely delicious plain. They were also absolutely delicious with the chimichurri sauce! I also ate the birria de hongo tacos. The birria gave it a smoky flavor. All of the flavors of the various ingredients mixed together really well, but I would still try something different if I came back here. My husband had the Wagyu beef empanadas. He loved how full they were in terms of content on the inside, but did not enjoy them enough overall that he would want to come here again.

Was told to try saddity Latin and that's what I'll do! This place is beautiful, a lovely spot to go on date night, if you will. We went for lunch and they have an express lunch menu where you receive an appetizer, main and a dessert; this, in my opinion is the best bang for your buck. Plus, they really try to get you in and out in an hour, should you have to go back to work. I got the lobster tortilla soup, Salmon Zarandeado and gelato. The soup tasted phenomenal, the salmon was cooked to perfection and the gelato (I believe it was salted caramel) wasn't too sweet. I think the presentation is beautiful and the flavors are on point; although, I would not be able to bring my partner as he would leave hungry. The service was nice; although, towards the end of the meal I felt rushed as they needed to prepare for dinner.

This is a really strong four--almost a five. The food was fantastic!! We got the lobster soup, corn empanadas, short rib carbon, cauliflower, and crème brûlée. All of them were really good--the cauliflower was probably the biggest surprise--it kind of just looks like a big hunk of cauliflower, but it's smokey, charred, saucy, and scrumptious. I'm not a vegetarian, but I could happily eat that as my meal. The brûlée also felt special with a coffee profile. My husband's old-fashioned was very booze forward--I don't think he minded, but it definitely lacked subtlety. The restaurant is beautiful and the presentation is lovely. My only ring is the service. It was attentive, but it lacked warmth.

I went here a few years ago for brunch and was not impressed at all. I was told to try it again but for dinner. I finally went back for dinner and my husband and I were so happy we did. Dinner is amazing. He got the branzino and I got the American Waygu that came with three toppings and some blue corn tortillas. For dessert we got the espresso crème brûlée. We will definitely go back but only for dinner. I'm not sure why the brunch can't be as good as their dinner.

Came last night before a comedy show at the Capital One Arena and OMG...10/10 hands down I have no notes. We went in right as they opened, on a Friday at 5 pm, and there was already a line! The reservations were full, but we were offered a seat either at the bar or outside. Luckily it was a beautiful day so we took a seat outside. They started us off with a sweet hibiscus flavored juice as a palate cleanser which was super refreshing. The left side of the menu had appetizers and shareables, while the right side had entrees. We ordered the short rib tacos, pork belly, wagyu empanadas, and seafood enchiladas. Everything had a beautiful bright orange sauce on it and made it look like it would be spicy but it wasn't! I think it's their signature guajillo sauce and it was VERY good, super creamy. Seafood enchiladas: This was my fav. Might have been because it was extremely hungry and it was my first bite. Definitely best when eaten warm, as the cheese is gooiest and the seafood inside is hot. I wasn't sure how the salad was going to be but it added a perfect refreshing and acidity to balance out the creamy sauce. Wagyu empanadas: Much gooey-er and cheesier than expected, but also a hit! Came with a decent amount of beef inside. Comes with the orange sauce and a chimichurri, which I think was a good idea because given how cheesy and creamy the filling already was, the chimichurri was a nice balance as well. Pork belly: Melts as soon as you cut into it. The Asian in me low key wanted a giant bowl of rice with this so that I could soak up all the sauce and veggies. Pretty fatty so if you're not a fan of that you might not like this. Short rib tacos: These were loaded, not with meat but with tons of crunchy topping (maybe fried carrots?) Could have done with slightly less crunch but overall still good. The orange sauce on the bottom had a peanuty flavor which I thought added a unique kick. Also, we were surprised at how quickly the food came out. We were in and out in under an hour. Our server Rebecca was also extremely nice. Will def be back if in the area. Highly recommend all around!

Love DLeña's express lunch! Great deal for 3 courses - $28. Typically not busy and you get great food and service. We started with the queso fundido which was tasty and flavorful and the guacamole which was fresh 2nd course were fish tacos and DLeña burger. I enjoyed my burger which was seasoned impeccably. My colleague really likes her fish tacos. By the 3rd course we were stuffed but managed to take 2 bites of both desserts which were great. Highly recommend if you have never been to DLeña before or want to grab a 3 course lunch for an affordable price

Came here for brunch while on a staycation in DC. I would suggest getting a rideshare, taking the Metro, or finding a nearby parking garage because street parking is VERY limited in the area. Now, dLena was an experience. It's a Mexican restaurant that specializes in its talked about brunch. We made reservations ahead and were greeted by pleasant staff who escorted us to our table. We were presented with the menu...I thought I had to choose what I wanted to get...little did I know that the menu WAS everything we were getting To be honest, there were roughly 17 items (around 16 for us since I am not a fan of mushrooms and that was one of the dishes) with each one bringing a unique, complex, tasting experience. Some I liked, some I didn't, but there were none that I found outright unappealing. The staff were pleasant, professional, and described every item that was brought to the table, which we really appreciated. The manager came to our table due to a misunderstanding with the party next to us and was so understanding and apologized, which we really appreciated. The ambiance was busy, but chill at the same time, it was a great vibe. All in all, I WILL BE BACK to dLena!

Been here twice - first was for a happy hour, second for dinner. Both times the service has been great, the wait staff are super kind and accommodating of food allergies. Kind of a dim lights vibe with a wraparound bar and table seating, as well as a basement area with a bar and live music (you can also order food downstairs!). Very vibey, and my friend loved their mezcal drinks. We tried the corn and wagyu empanadas and both were excellent. The guacamole was also great, but I might pass on the queso next time - lovely presentation, but just isn't my thing. The salsa that came with it was incredible, though! My entree was the pescado tacos. They were excellent, though a little heavy on the sauce, in my opinion. I want to try the birria tacos if I make it to dLeña again.

I was very excited to try out D'Leñas bottomless brunch for my boyfriend's birthday trip. We were coming in from NYC and made reservations way in advance. The menu looked astounding and my bf LOVES Mexican. Firstly, the drinks were plenty to chose from. Multiple mimosa flavors. Micheladas called my attention after never seeing that on a bottomless menu. The michelada and the margarita were the best. The mimosa tasted like really cheap bubbles that almost tasted like beer. They were sitting at the bar in jugs not on ice I think maybe that would help. I would approach this brunch soooo differently had I known the way. They bring out everything on the menu. The best items in our opinion were at the beginning. The skillets at the end are huge heavy portions and the flavors get repetitive. Best things on the bottomless menu are the FRUIT COCKTAIL WOW surprised us soooo much. The fish tacos delishhhhh. The Cesar salad was yummy. All the tacos were good. The steak and eggs delicious. The chicken wand waffles was good! Overall the experience was great. They were super busy but we were treated well and the birthday surprise was so nice! Thank u for that !! My friend heard so many great things about DLeña, so she made reservations for brunch. We were about 20 mins early and decided to see if they will sit us, and they did. We were greeted by two nice ladies and they walked us to our table. Our waiter was very professional, knowledgeable and attentive. He recommended the bottomless brunch, we got to try all the items on the menu and we did bottomless drinks as well. The restaurant had upbeat music with a stylish decor. The food was ok, they were a few choices on the menu that we really liked. We will come back when it's not brunch to try the regular menu. came here on my first visit to DC - got the bottomless brunch with a friend. unfortunately, she came in not feeling well and had to leave fairly early into our time. she barely touched her food or drink and had to leave. they were SO accommodating. i asked to get moved to the bar so i could finish off my meal and drinks in peace. they took off her meal which was so kind and something they didn't need to do or what we asked them to do. then, my server was Forrest. he was super welcoming and made sure i felt comfortable when i suddenly found myself doing a solo bottomless brunch. he gave me a ton of bar recs for our saturday night and overall was super great. i will be recommending this place to friends and will be coming back - hopefully with my friend when she feels better; she'd love it, too :) read more

Sweet baby Jesus this place speaks to my soul. Wow everything from the interior to the ambiance is top tier and I'm not even talking about the food yet. The food is amazing and if you haven't please check out the pork belly because it melts in your mouth. Every bite so flavorful. The tacos are delicious as well and I also had the big slab of meat (I believe it was the pork shank). I forgot the name but it's enough for two. Desert I had the crepes and it was good as well But the star of the show for me was the oysters. I've literally come here on two separate occasions for them. It's a very sexy place, dim lighting definitely good for a date night or someone you want to impress, not to mention the downstairs bar as well that plays excellent live music. First time coming here, and it was AMAZING! My best friend and I went here for happy hour yesterday, and this place oooooozes sophistication. From the décor, to the dim lighting, it is a whole vibe here. From my observation, there are a lot corner areas that allow for a more intimate 1-1 for conversation and such. There are 2 floors. First floor has a bar and tables for dining, where as the second floor has another bar and a beautiful assortment of couches/lounge chairs for people to sit in groups and chat. The second floor really was giving underground club kind of energy, I loved it! Parking is nuts (that's DC for you lol), however there is a gravel lot right around the corner that you can park and nearby parking garages. There was a live band singing all the oldie hits, which added a nice touch. Their happy hour runs from 5pm-7pm, and as I got there at ~ 5:30ish, it was already starting to get packed so keep that in mind. Definitely a staple spot that I will be going to for sure, and will definitely check out for date night to try out their dinner menu. . read more

This is yet another example of the ambiance and newness of a restaurant clouding the reviews. The food was just mediocre. The guacamole was good, not exceptional in any way. The enchiladas were definitely "mid" and had no distinct flavor. I found the staff rude and pretentious. Our waiter basically abandoned our table on multiple occasions. Don't get caught up on the glitz because the space looks great. The food is what matters and theirs is nothing to write home about. Skip it. read more

Dleña is amazing. The only reason i'm not giving 5 stars is because they served me street corn with pork when they knew i'm vegetarian. instead of other restaurants, they were extremely apologetic and forgiving. the food and drinks were amazing for bottomless. I would definitely return. if you're vegetarian I would recommend double checking with everything you order to make sure it's purely vegetarian. read more

Dropped by just before 7pm on a Friday night to try to get a table downstairs where there was live jazz playing, but we ended up waiting a whole hour for a spot to open up before we decided we should cut our losses and get some food elsewhere. Luckily by that time, there were open spots at the bar at dLeña proper and we were able to be served food there. Drinks were yummy, food as expected - the wait for the bartender to tend to us was a bit longer than I would've preferred but perhaps that's just the pace at the bar. My friend and I ended up hanging out there for about 3 hours and they didn't rush us at all. Overall would come by again if we had a reservation or earlier to get a seat in their jazz lounge. read more

Mixed experience after dining at dLena. Had high expectations but food was just okay and service was inconsistent. Waitress was pleasant but slow to follow up and often forgot what we had requested. We had the Tomahawk steak which was $150 for two. Steak was very salty and had long aftertaste still the next morning. Our family also had the short ribs - also very salty and the prawns - hard to eat and after removing the skin not much to eat. Overall not worth the expense. read more

My husband, son, and I dined here on 10/28 for a 7:15pm reservation celebrating my birthday. Every year I dine with Flemings in Virginia but decided to try Dleña after hearing such great reviews. Unfortunately my experience was far from what I heard. I made my reservation well in advance for my husband and I, but called later to ask if i can add 2 or 4 more people to my party. I was told that wasn't possible and that the restaurant was fully booked for the night. After arriving, we were seated at a 4 person table, even though i was told i could not add 2 others to my party. The restaurant itself doesn't even have seating for 2 at a time. Each table is 4 or more, so whoever set up tables this way designed it poorly. Once I was sat by my host, i looked up and saw i was seated under a vent. My son complained that he was cold so we asked our server if we could move. She promptly moved us and the unprofessional host came over and loudly said to us that we're not allowed to sit there because she planned to seat others at this table and that we need to move back so that she can combine two tables. After my husbands suggestion to move to the table next to that table, further from the vent, we were all okay. I'm not sure why the host didn't think to seat us there or why she didn't privately tell the server about her seating plan but that rubbed both of us the wrong way and set the foundation for our experience dining at Dleña. I need Dleña to train their hosts better because I expect better service from a restaurant featured in a Michelin Guide. Onto my appetizer, I ordered Guacamole and Wagyu empanadas. The chips tasted burnt and when my husband and I bit into our empanadas, they were cold. The outside of the empanada was hot but the inside was cold. It was clear the oil you used to fry them was too hot because why else would the outside be hot to touch but the inside is ice cold. My husband sent them back and they came back out at a better temperature inside and out. We then ordered the ribeye. My ribeye was under seasoned, his ribeye was over seasoned, it was also very grainy and the quality of the steak was poor. For the price we paid I expected WAY better quality for a restaurant that prides itself on their steaks. The only part of the steak done right was the cook on the steak, but it lacked everywhere else and barely had sear. After the steaks, we planned on ordering the short rib but decided to wrap it up as we were so disappointed in our meals so far. I didn't receive a Happy Birthday leaving or arriving, nothing was even done when i mentioned it was my birthday. At least at Flemings, it's acknowledged with the tables decorated, free dessert, and a card signed by staff. But Dleña is clearly not the place for celebration as I was treated like any other. Let's fast forward to when i arrived home. I felt sick to my stomach and my husband did too. Once I found myself vomiting, i was brought to the emergency room where they told me I had food poisoning. I was unable to keep down liquids, foods, pills, etc.. and had to get an IV to replenish my electrolytes and zofran to stop the puking. I spent the entire day after in the ER trying to recover. So much for trying a new restaurant on my birthday. I do not ever see myself dining or recommending Dleña to anyone. I now know if I want a great experience and quality food to stay away from Dleña and go to Flemings. I called the manager once i was out the hospital and he told me to email their team of reps... i have yet to hear anything back. Don't dine here. I could've saved over $200 and went elsewhere. read more

Thought I found a great place to come due the huge tequila collection that they have. I found out that they have one my new favorite Tequilas "Rooster Rojo" only to be told that it's at the bar downstairs and the bartender did not want to go get it. I should have left at that moment. I order the short rib tacos which were flavorful also order the broccolini and the medio pollo al carbon for my date all of which were delicious although the enchiladas had a dissatisfying taste. If you are looking for a great spot for brunch with your girls this is it!!! The bottomless food and drink is a steal. However, if you are not a drinker, bottomless food is also an option. This review is for Roja Lounge, the downstairs bar at dLena: Get there early because this place gets crowded fast! We were unable to make reservations but upon arriving saw that a lot of the tables had "reserved" signs...we later learned that the tables can be reserved if you have a membership to the tequila lockers. Not something I've ever encountered before and it results in a lot of people standing around waiting for a table to open up. My boyfriend got the La Luna cocktail and it was the worst drink I've ever tasted in my life--it tasted like plastic, or burnt hair. I don't drink mezcal so maybe that's how it's supposed to taste. The Painkiller cocktail was much better. Once we were able to sit down we ordered food--chips & guacamole and wings. The guacamole was good but jeez, $15 for guac and chips is steep. The wings were okay, very sweet, and one of them was stone-cold, like it had just come out of the fridge. The servers are also way more attentive to the tequila locker patrons than the regular riff-raff, so it was a little hard to flag one down. The music was good, but really loud for such a small basement room. It was really difficult to speak to the people I was with until we got a table that was near the entrance and further away from the musicians. read more

First thing first, I've I only dined downstairs so I can't speak on the service or atmosphere up on the main level. So what I will rave about is NANCY (hope I spelled it right)!! We love great cocktails made with intention and made well - paired with amazing customer service. Nancy delivers on all of that and more. I'm not sure how you can leave their disappointed but I'm aware there are some "negative Nancies and Nathans" who only post the not so good reviews but I've been a couple of times and it's been 5 stars and some. The food was absolutely delicious. We ordered the corn empanadas for an appetizer and for entrees the cauliflower and the pollo dish = great presentation and super flavorful and cooked just right!! Compliments to the chef(s). The downstairs is a bit more intimate - more of a lounge feel. The decor is fitting and I'm a fan of it. I've only gone during the weekday within the first few hours of them opening we stay until the first bit of live music starts (at least on Wednesday night I'm sure of live music). It is first come first serve so plan accordingly if you want to get a table downstairs since you can only make rsvp for upstairs. Great for dates, friends dinner or cocktail/wine meetup, or even to bring a colleague or two. If tequila or mezcal is your jam then you will be in a wonderland but they also have other spirits to cater to the non agave connoisseurs. Like I said, if you don't remember anything else just know Nancy is absolutely brilliant as she leads and runs the downstairs lounge of DLeña with care and excellence! read more

That's when I found Benito's and realized that it's neon sign was out. Walk too fast and you might miss it. A narrow door aside a bay window lit from inside. It's a small place with a warm, cozy feeling. Benito's is very much a neighborhood Central American restaurant, but FYI: no alcohol. Started with guac and chips, usual fare, delicious but nothing that singled it out. I ordered the Pollo a la Plancha and it was rather good. The chicken was grilled through but not tough, it still had moisture and you could cut it. Rice, greens, etc. and the small 2oz solo of black beans, all standard fare. The corn tortillas were interesting, not your usual thin tortillas, so it took my mind a moment to consider what I was holding. It had the thickness of a pancake, maybe a sope base, and reminded me of thick, handmade tortillas when you don't have the press. Curiously, the tortillas were not the same that my friend got with his Mole Poblano, which were thin. Granted, it was a cold Tuesday evening, but in two hours only two other individuals came in to eat. Seems like they do brisk take away business. I expect on a warmer night with higher foot traffic this place fills up quickly. The service was great, did not want for anything. We were served with two containers of sauce, green and orange. Ostensibly green chili, and habanero, I did not learn specifically however. When I dine in DC I can't help but confront the blunt question: Was it worth it? Yeah, it's good food, good people, and a good place. You'll feel comfortable there and leave full. But the price of dining out is too damn high, and this meal is on the higher side of what, ten years ago, would have been $15. I fear that prices will continue to be pushed higher and places like Benito's might disappear, so get over there because the food excellent, the people are nice, and it's just a warm space to hang out for an hour or so talking to an old friend.

The meats were cooked to how we requested it, and of course tastes especially good with the sauces. My favorite cuts were the strip steak, beef rib, and picanha. I didn't really care for the sweet breads, but that is a personal preference. Value wise, the Parrillada platters could easily feed 4 - 5 people, so we had plenty of leftovers. Birthday person had to call them and me to smooth it all over. Then, another person called me to get my email address to send me a PDF to fill out (which I had to then send them on WhatsApp) for my order - a comically silly added bureaucratic/administrative load. Just take the credit card over the phone on the first call/request, like 99% of businesses around the world. This place takes 3-4 steps just to order something... This person had absolutely zero idea that I made the request as a surprise, so it suggests there is pretty poor coordination and communication amongst staff. I'm sure people come here regularly and have great meals and great times. But at their prices, wine/champagne mark-ups, and promise of an 'elevated' experience -- staff need to get their act together.

Syrups made in house of course and you can tell. Just a perfect latte. I usually am an iced latte person but I recommend getting their lattes hot. Hits different.

Good food and drinks; and if you want to be treated like you're at one of those satire restaurants where you pay them to demean/insult you, then dLeña is the place for you. My fiancé and I have been to dLeña previously, more specifically to their Roja Lounge for drinks and small plates. The drinks were so good that even our friends who were from out of town insisted we go again when they were back in town. I don't remember anything standout about the service, good or bad. When we saw that they were doing a New Year's Eve dinner with live music at their Roja Lounge, we were very excited to go with some friends. I booked the reservation, but noticed there was no ability to book the Lounge so I gave them a call to enquire about their NYE event and how seating downstairs would work. I was told that the setup would be as normal downstairs and there would be no reservations, walk-in only. I pushed a little bit on seating and the host insisted that it would be first come, first serve. I thought that was a bit odd on a night as busy as NYE, but didn't think much of it past that. On NYE we arrived a few minutes early for our reservation and our table wasn't ready, we were told we could go grab a drink at the bar upstairs or go down to their Roja Lounge. We opted for the lounge to give our friends an idea where we'd be spending the rest of the night after dinner (the ambiance is amazing downstairs). We come downstairs to find every table/lounge area has a RESERVED placard on it. At this point, I was very confused as the person I talked to on the phone insisted that they would not be doing reservations in the lounge, so when we went upstairs, I enquired with the host. She explained that the tables are only for members of their 'Tequila Locker Program', I asked why that wasn't explained to me on the phone when I enquired and eventually was told, "well you don't understand these people spend 2k every 6 months." As others have mentioned in their reviews, it seems to be a common occurrence at dLeña that insinuate that you don't belong or can't afford certain things (for context we spent over a grand on food and drinks that night (dinner was pre-paid) so that really rubbed salt into the wound). After dinner we went downstairs to the bathroom and there were still quite a few tables with reserved on them that clearly weren't occupied, this was around 11pm. While I went to the bathroom my fiancé enquired with the staff downstairs about what they would do with those tables if no one showed - they said the weren't sure. In the meantime, our friends had gone upstairs and found 2 seats at the bar, we were very excited that we finally found some seats to enjoy the rest of our night at! My girlfriend and I went to order drinks and were immediately told that she could only serve people who were sitting. At this point we were done with the constant inconveniences of this restaurant and asked for a manager. We explained the series of events to the manager and were met with again with a demeaning tone about how there are some very important people here tonight and constant name dropping of who those people were (director at IBM/Director of DC Parks & Rec), as if that had anything to do with the situation. Last time I checked, my money spends the same as the Director of DC Parks & Rec. After going back and forth, the manager went downstairs and came back up to tell us he may have something downstairs for us. We followed him downstairs to find the "space" he had for us was just that, a space in the corner of the bar with no seating. He said a table may free up and they we'll need to grab it as soon as staff took the reserved sign off. We decided at this point it was just time to leave, as we would have been in competition with the numerous other parties who also wanted somewhere to sit for the night. Again, if they had just explained that the tables would be completely booked, I would have either made plans. As you can imagine, it is impossible to get into anywhere in DC the night of NYE without a reservation. We noticed the table behind us seemed to also have the impression that they would be able to sit downstairs (or at least the potential to) and were scrambling to try and find a place to continue their night elsewhere. We also overheard multiple other parties complaining about how this was just a cash grab. While I know this review most likely won't change anything, I do hope that the team takes some time to consider the experience they are providing to their patrons. I understand that NYE is an extremely challenging day in the service industry, but whoever oversees booking decisions is making everything 10x more difficult for their staff and patrons. After reading some of the other reviews where people have had similar experiences, we will not be taking this as a one off because of NYE and won't be returning. read more

I've visited this restaurant multiple times, each with its own experience. On my first visit, we sat upstairs in the main dining area. The ambiance was intimate and inviting, with soft lighting that created a cozy atmosphere ideal for a nice dinner. On another visit, we didn't have reservations and were seated downstairs. The downstairs space had a completely different vibe--much more relaxed and open, but the seating layout felt a bit awkward, especially when trying to enjoy a larger meal. Would be perfect for drinks, music, and smaller snacks. The way some of the tables and seats were positioned together or at odd angles made it a little less comfortable for a full on dining experience. However, the live music downstairs added a vibrant energy and transformed the experience into something more lively and fun, making it enjoyable on its own. As for the food, it did not let me down. We opted for a variety of dishes to share with the table, which allowed us to sample a wide range of flavors. However, the only downfall during my first visit was that the pacing of the courses was off, which was disappointing. They served the protein by itself first, and the vegetables arrived much later, which meant we couldn't enjoy them together. The vegetables felt like an afterthought and weren't as satisfying on their own. That said, the oysters were incredible--some of the best I've ever had. They were full of flavor, perfectly prepared, and a real standout of the meal. I also visited once for lunch and unfortunately, I wouldn't return for that. The lunch menu was much more limited, and most of the restaurant's best dishes were only available during dinner. Unlike other places that offer flexibility, they didn't allow us to order from the dinner menu during lunch hours, which was a bit of a letdown. I came to dLeña for brunch with friends on a Saturday, and overall, it was a decent experience but not one I'd necessarily go out of my way to repeat. We went around 11:30, so it started off pretty quiet, but as brunch picked up, it definitely got louder. The ambiance is nice though, very laid-back, chill, and a great vibe for a group brunch or celebration. We did the bottomless brunch, and one thing I really appreciated is that the bottomless food and drinks are priced separately. Not everyone in our group wanted drinks, so it was nice that we were only charged for the people who actually ordered them. The only downside is that mocktails aren't included. The food is served as small plates brought out progressively, but I do wish this had been explained better upfront. It was presented as if they would just bring items out, but it wasn't clearly communicated that we could also order anything we wanted from the menu. That made the experience feel a bit confusing. The meal started off strong. The salad was fresh, and there was a fruit/yogurt dish with agave that was honestly one of the best things we had. From there, it became hit or miss. The ceviche and chips were good, the fish tacos were solid, and I appreciated that they had some vegetarian options (though somewhat limited). The waffle and churro were highlights, but the potato hash fell flat. As the meal went on, service slowed down quite a bit. We were waiting a while for certain items (like the corn), and it felt like things just started to lag toward the end. Service overall followed a similar pattern. Strong at the beginning, but less attentive as it got busier. Overall, I'd rate it around a 7 out of 10. It's a fun spot for the experience and group setting, but the lack of clarity and inconsistency in pacing took away from it. However, my experience at this crowded place was far from enjoyable due to the the lack of seating. Finding a spot to even stand (forget sitting) was a challenge in itself, as the seating seemed to me as if it was reserved for more special guests. Also, the atmosphere was overshadowed by the unapproachable staff. The staff appeared uninterested in providing assistance. It felt like they were going through the motions without any genuine interest. Requests for assistance were met with cold responses, and it seemed like they were doing us a favor rather than providing a service. I assume that if you don't have one of their special lockers to store tequilla in then you are going to have to stand or leave. It was disheartening to see the staff prioritize certain customers over others, creating an unwelcoming and exclusive vibe. The lack of attentiveness from the staff made it challenging to fully enjoy the music or the company of friends. The overall atmosphere in the downstairs bar was not conducive to relaxation or enjoyment, which was a significant letdown. I would like to first start by saying I never review restaurants but my experience last night made me make an exception. My wife and I ate at Dleña and had a wonderful experience. It was our anniversary and we wanted to make a night of it so we went downstairs to the speakeasy bar for a night cap. They had live music which was great and had a really cool atmosphere. But it wasn't the food or drinks (which were great) that made me write this, but the service. I have lived in DC for many years but last night was the best service We have experienced since coming to this city. Our server Nancy was incredible and had such knowledge. We first were standing because it was first come first serve and when we told her we were celebrating our anniversary she immediately found us a table . When we asked her what she liked on the menu she said it didn't matter because it wasn't about her, it was about what we like and what kind of experience we wanted to have. She had us trying mezcal (which neither my wife nor I had ever had) and then gave us old fashions with tequila and mezcal! If that wasn't enough, she even brought us a dessert that had "Happy Anniversary" written on it. I decided to spend New Year's Eve at Dleña in NW DC based on a recommendation from the Washington Post, but my experience left much to be desired. Upon entering, I was told by a staff member that I could sit anywhere in the lounge without "reserved" signs. However, every table in the lounge had reserved signs, creating confusion from the start. After finally finding a seat at the bar, the bartender, with noticeably unpleasant breath, informed me that the seat was also "reserved." This contradicted the earlier information I received about seating options upon entering. Despite these initial setbacks, I found two available seats at the bar for myself and my cousin. To our dismay, after being told to wait "one" minute to order, the bartender never took our order. Later, I observed the same bartender speaking with a manager, who then stated that one of our seats was reserved. This was the second time we were informed of reserved seating after being seated without any initial indications. Feeling unwelcome and frustrated by the inconsistency, my cousin and I decided to leave and settled at a different bar to welcome in 2024 more tastefully. Upon arrival, our waiter approached us and asked what we would like to order. We inquired about the bottomless brunch option, and he informed us that it was no longer available after 1 PM, which seemed unusual given that it was still 1.5hrs prior to closing. However, this was not the main issue and we were totally fine with ordering something else if we had access to the full menu. Before we had the opportunity to ask any follow-up questions or explore what other menu options there were, our waiter walked away promptly after stating bottomless brunch was not a option. We waited approximately 20-25 minutes for him to return, but he never did. Ultimately, we decided to leave and dine elsewhere due to the lack of service. I had been eagerly anticipating a visit to dLeña, drawn in by its rustic and romantic ambiance. However, I must admit, the experience left me somewhat disappointed. The wagyu empanadas, a dish I was particularly excited about, turned out to be predominantly filled with cheese, lacking the rich, meaty flavor I was hoping for. Similarly, the wagyu fajitas, which I expected to be a highlight, were surprisingly lacking in flavor. The bell peppers were overly salted, the wagyu itself was bland, and the accompanying items did little to elevate the dish. On a positive note, the oysters were good, but the bacon jam that accompanied them was overpowering, detracting from the delicate taste of the oysters. Another aspect that detracted from the experience was having three different people check in with us while we were eating. This made the restaurant feel less relaxing and became a bit of an annoyance. Given the price point, I had expected a more memorable and flavorful experience. We recently dined at this restaurant, and overall, it was a fantastic experience. Great ambience, dimmed lights, comfortable and cozy place. The flavors and quality of the food were exceptional, and we thoroughly enjoyed our meal. The short rib tacos were a highlight, cooked perfectly. The Guacamole was fresh and flavorful, adding a delightful touch to our dining experience. Only downside was the long waiting time. It was a bit frustrating to wait for our food, especially since we were quite hungry. However, once food arrived it was definitely worth the wait. The staff appeared a bit distracted during our visit, but they were friendly and accommodating nonetheless. It would have been even better if they were a a little more attentive to the customers needs. While the taste and quality of the dishes were excellent, portion sizes left a bit to be desired, especially considering the price. Although food was delicious, a slightly larger portion would have made the experience even more satisfying. Despite these minor issues, I highly recommend this restaurant for it's mouthwatering Mexican cuisine. read more

Really beautifully decorated restaurant that is pretty unassuming from outside. At night, it's really dark inside though and the candles don't provide much light. We came to celebrate our anniversary. Our server was so nice and funny. He was really helpful in telling us which dishes were good and which weren't. He definitely made us have an enjoyable time. Their initial "shot" of non-alcoholic mezcal was delicious. Their lemonade is also really good. We tried the guacamole (delicious), wagyu fajita (cooked perfectly and absolutely melt in the mouth--they forgot to bring us our tortillas and we didn't realize this until we saw it on the menu during dessert), short rib tacos (meh, the short rib was really dry), and the broccolini (a bit over charred and too oily). For dessert, we initially tried the chocolate fondant but it was not good at all. It should be liquid in the center but it was like a cooked sponge-y bread with not much sweetness. Our server comped us a new dessert--the crepe cake. This one was slightly better but overall just average. Their desserts are not worth it, in my opinion. read more

This is the second time I'm visiting dLeña and I loved today's experience just as much as my first visit. Photos don't do justice as this place is so beautiful! The ambiance is elegant, classy, and warm. The seating at the bar is very comfortable. Excellent service by bartenders who are polite, efficient, and professional. Of course, the food here is phenomenal! My favorites from today were Wagyu Beef Tiradito, Pork Belly, and Ceviche Amarillo. I'm not a fan of steak in general, but their 30 Day Dry Aged Boneless Ribeye puts top-tier steakhouses in the DMV area to shame. Their tacos (Short Rib, Atún, and Camaróne) are perfection. Overall, there is no restaurant that can compete with dLeña currently in DC - a class act all around. If you are looking for a romantic date spot, bring your beau here! If your friends are visiting from out of town to experience DC, bring them here! No matter who you bring as your company, it will be a lovely evening filled with fabulous drinks, great food, vibrant live music, and muchas risas! read more

I had the pleasure of dining at dLeña for dinner the other night and I must say, it was an experience unlike any other. The atmosphere was very inviting and the staff was welcoming and friendly. The food was absolutely delicious, with a mix of flavors that you would rarely find at a Mexican restaurant. The portions were generous and the prices were pricey but very reasonable. We started with the Tuna Tartare Guacamole - the guac was fresh, creamy, and flavorful. The chips were crispy and perfectly salted. For the main course, I had the Short Rib al Carbon; it was cooked to perfection and melted in my mouth. The unique combination of flavors and spices was something that I had never tasted before. The accompanying sides were also delicious, particularly the roasted veggies, which were light and fresh. Overall, my experience at dLeña was one of the best I have ever had. I highly recommend this restaurant for anyone looking for an amazing Mexican cuisine experience in DC. read more

My friend and I had a disappointing experience at dlena in Washington DC. The restaurant was very loud, which made it difficult to enjoy our conversation. Our waitress was rude from the start, which set a negative tone for the evening. While the tuna guacamole and ceviche appetizers were good, the drinks left much to be desired. My friend disliked his drink, and no one asked if he'd like a replacement. I ordered my steak rare, but it came out well done. When I sent it back, the staff was obstinate and returned a steak that was too rare. No manager visited our table, and no compensation was offered for the mistake. The waitress's comment that "no female had ever ordered a rare steak" there before and questioning if my upbringing influenced my taste was incredibly unprofessional and offensive. Overall, dlena might be decent for appetizers, but I wouldn't recommend it given the price. The steak, even if cooked properly, didn't feel worth $63. read more

The flavors? Exceptional. The patio? Pure perfection. This review? Completely positive, reflecting our fantastic experience. I'm not even sure where to begin. While we didn't opt for the beloved classic brunch, our dinner of appetizers was both light and flavorful. We were seated promptly and decided to kick things off with sweet mango margaritas. For our meal, the Maryland crab guacamole stood out with generous crab portions and a delicious twist - crispy bread instead of chips. The burrata salad featured refreshing grilled watermelon, creamy burrata, and flavorful heirloom tomatoes. As a delightful conclusion, the rich cheesecake paired wonderfully with a scoop of ice cream on top. The presentations were visually stunning, and we enjoyed it all from their sunny, covered patio. We recently visited DLeña for brunch on a Saturday to celebrate my friend's birthday, and we were thoroughly impressed by the ambiance, the service, and the overall experience. While we felt that the food selection could be improved, the quality of the dishes we tried was excellent. Our favorite plates were the steak and eggs, chilaquiles, churros, and seasonal fruits. As for the food, we ended up ordering more than we could handle (eyes bigger than our stomachs moment!), but everything we tried was flavorful and well-prepared.
