If you have curly hair you NEED to see Juliet. I have 2C-3A curls and I've spent YEARS trying to figure out how to manage them. After a cut from Juliet, I feel like my curls can finally spring up to their potential. Juliet started out with a dry cut and she was so amazing answering all of my questions (which I had a lot). She was super knowledgeable as to the type of products that my hair could handle, and even let me know that my current shampoo/conditioner was probably too heavy for me which is why my curls were a bit lackluster. After the dry cut we moved onto the wash and some final snipping finishes. I'll probably never be able to recreate the final look that she achieved after diffusing but I'll make it my personal mission to get as close to it as possible. I'm so glad that I chose to go to DMS salon! It's located in a really cute old building around the historic Ellicott City area. I had the newbie curly hair cut with tutorial with Hini. He was great to talk to and went above and beyond in teaching me how to care for my curly hair. I was SO happy with the cut he did, my hair looks exactly like I wanted it to. I was worried about finding someone to tame my hair but he definitely knows curly hair- better than I do! He answered all of my questions (I had a lot) and he's just super nice in general. He devoted 2 hours of his time to my cut and questions. He gave me a little instruction manual with the basics of how to care for my hair at home. He and Dawn also gave me some samples of the products they used on my hair at the salon. I'm definitely going back, and highly recommend! Also, just to add, I called on Friday and they got me an appointment on the following Tuesday! I didn't have any trouble reaching them at all. read more

As someone with very curly hair it can be difficult to find a good hairstylist. However, if you're in the market for one and in the area, your search is over! I have been coming here and seeing Juliet for 5 years and have recommended DMS to all my fellow curly friends and family. The salon is all organic and I believe everyone there is Devacurl certified, which is awesome. The vibe is very cute, it's in an old home in Oella. They take the time to get to know your wants and hair and don't rush appointments. It can sometimes be difficult to get someone on the phone, but normally if you leave a message they call back within a day or two. It's expensive, but if you ask me the cost is justified in the work that they do. You're truly paying for quality. read more

Astonishingly disappointed. After highly recommending their establishment and trusting them, all warm feelings were crushed when for no reason I received a phonecall by Dawn basically telling me "Hi is this "x" person, ok we are declining to book you." I have no idea why. In fact, they are a far commute for me to plan and a pain to book within my schedule and their available times. I did asked "why? what did I do?" no courtesy feedback was provided, simply a bogus "we are not the right fit for you" ... So ironic after multiple happy paid $$$ haircare visits, I now have to crush my kids heart and let them know they are unwelcome for no reason. I never expected such poor rude manner to follow-up to an existing client voicemail booking request for 3 people. Don't be fooled if they seem a dream online & in-person. Unfortunately the same can happen to you. Skip the long drive, the haggle to get anyone to answer the phone and the absurd delay to get back to voicemail requesting to book. Ever had a haircut where the stylist makes it look great, then you get home and can't replicate what they did and it looks like crap? This is the opposite of that. Dawn REALLY knows what she's doing with wavy hair! I have fine hair, a little more thin and straight in the front, and wavy and fuller in the back. She cut my hair dry using techniques I've never seen before... the cut was so quick and easy, it's hard to believe this is one of the best haircuts I've ever had. It's extremely low maintenance because she cut according to how my hair naturally falls. All I have to do is wash it and let it air dry without any products and it looks great and full. I'm so excited I finally went to DMS. I had been meaning to go in for years. (Also, it's very reasonably priced.) read more

I had a really good experience at DMS salon. I've always had a hard time managing my curly hair and getting it to look good, I especially struggled with lots of Halo frizz. I went to this salon hoping to cut my hair from its old length (It was very long and ran down my back) to about collar bone length, but the results of my hair far exceeded my expectations. I found it crazy to learn I was conditioning my hair wrong and that, the result I ended up with was WAY better than using product like I normally do. My hair this day has Nothing but conditioner. I was shown how to take care of it myself so I can do the same at home, I just hope I'll actually be able to achieve similar results on my wash day. today is my second day hair which is looking great, though not as nice as yesterday. I'm a little unsure how to refresh it because that's the one thing we didn't go over a ton. I just worked to preserve it at night and wet my hands and went over the sections that weren't all that great in the morning. It definitely lost some curl definition, there was an increase in halo frizz but it's still little compared to what I normally have . The paper I have mentions conditioner in a spray bottle so I might try that, I don't think it needs to be reclipped. Overall though , this is the happiest i've been with my hair. read more

So I have curly hair and have been getting Devacurl hair cuts since 2007 but that was in San Diego and I absolutely LOVED my stylist - she was AWESOME so when I went back to Grad school in New York City I thought going to THE Devachan Salon in NYC was going to be the best experience ever and I must admit it was just an "eh" experience. Then when I moved to Baltimore a year ago I went to another salon to get my hair cut and it was a horrible experience - so much so that it took me literally a year to get my hair cut again because I was too afraid to have it cut because the stylist ignored everything I told her about my issues with haircuts...CUT (pun intended) to December 11th when I walk into DMS Salon - wait let's go a little further back - after finding DMS on the Devacurl website, I called to make an appointment and the person who answered the phone was so super duper nice and accommodating - she had originally given me a date in January and when she heard the disappointment in my voice for having to wait so long she looked through the book again and found me an opening because someone had canceled - one person's cancellation is another person's good fortune. That is until the snow comes- so my appointment was scheduled for December 10th but we had tremendous snow that day so I received a phone call before 9 am asking if it would be okay to reschedule for the following morning - how is that for great service!??? And this is all before I have met anyone at the salon or even walked through the door. DMS realizes that the customers experience starts the moment they call to make the appointment and they make sure you feel comfortable and taken care of the entire time - so already they had bonus points in my book! So NOW, I get to the day of my appointment and not only is the salon in the most adorable part of the state - Ellicott City but it is the cutest salon ever - the decor is super welcoming, it is like being in someone's house and not being at an overcrowded, obnoxious salon (like others I have been to) and not only that but this salon is ORGANIC!!! Hello, my inner environmentalist was so super excited by the entire experience! Once I arrived, Juliet, my stylist welcomed me and I must admit my only hesitation about this entire experience was although Juliet had amazing hair and super chic fashion sense - HAD STRAIGHT HAIR!!! I mean, how can a girl with straight hair do a Devacurl hair cut? The entire goal of the Devacurl hair cut is that it is for curly haired girls, never had I had a straight haired stylist before - this was going to be weird. But then she worked her magic - Juliet listened to all of my concerns (neuroses) and assessed my hair situation and for the first time since I first discovered Devacurl hair cuts in 2007, I left the hair salon smiling because I actually liked - no LOVED - the hair cut!! What a great hidden salon! I went today for my first haircut after my mom and my sister recommended it. It is located in a cute historic house hidden up the hill in Oella just outside of Old Ellicott City. I was offered tea or coffee immediately upon arriving and sat in the comfortable waiting area. Nicole was my stylist and she took time to ask questions about exactly what I wanted. Then came the shampoo, which may have been the best part only because it was so fabulous. They massage your scalp with essential lavender and peppermint oils before they shampoo and it was SO relaxing. They used all Kevin Murphy products, which I hadn't heard of before but they smelled fabulous and used a lot of natural oils with no sulfates. Nicole was equally conscientious about my cut. She took a lot of time with my very long hair and even had me stand up to make sure it was hanging evenly. She was also a very nice, young girl who made it a fun experience. She finished up with another Kevin Murphy product which I loved so much that I bought it to bring home. Moral of the story: this is a fabulous salon. It's a little small, but that means you get very personal service and attention. From the shampoo to the cut, it was a very professional and relaxing experience at $40 for a cut and style which is very reasonable. I liked it so much here that, while I live in Boston, I'm going to get my hair cut when I come home. Excellent salon, highly recommended! read more

I've been going to DMS Salon for almost four years now. While I could go to other salons closer to my home, Dawn is absolutely worth the 25 minute drive. The salon is welcoming I'm always offered a cup of tea or coffee and a magazine. I never feel rushed, pushed into buying anything I don't want to buy, or like "just another client" at DMS Salon. I truly feel that Dawn cares about me - it shows in how well she takes care of me from the moment I walk in the door to the moment I leave. I have naturally curly hair and, like most Curly Girls, I have more haircut/style horror stories than I can count. Dawn has been absolutely amazing. She really takes her time to consult with me every time I come in before she touches my hair at all. I had such a great experience at DMS Salon when I went a few months ago! I was very impressed at how patient my stylist, Juliet, was in teaching me different ways to do my hair. She was very helpful and very professional. They didn't push ANY products, in fact, I had to ask - "are there any products you'd recommend?" Even then, Juliet recommended a few things but wasn't pushy. If you're coming in winter, be careful - the roads in Oella are a little steep, take your time. I looked for 6 years in Maryland for the right place to get my hair cut and finally found it! DMS is wonderful. Serena is the best! She's low-key, professional, and just chatty enough for a salon artist. She has fun tips and tricks, a great eye for the best new ideas and trends, and my hair always looks incredible the minute she's done and through the weeks after the cut and style. Raining, pouring day today & driving up Oella Ave can't be hairy on the clearest of days. Truck vs me on hairpin turn & yes, the truck won (he was bigger). I'm fine & car can be fixed. But with all the drama, I still got there on time for my appointment. I'm asked to wait & I can see the stylist is in the salon working on another customer. I can also see clearly that the clients color was just started to be applied. C'mon folks! I appreciate that she called me ahead of time and left a message that her client before me was running late and not to rush. (I usually hate when stylists do this because I feel like they are just pushing products, but that was not the case here. I loved my experience at DMS Salon. I have never had a stylist because I didn't like my hair cut or overall experience enough to go back. That all changed after Michael! He is fabulous! The salon itself if clean, fresh, and very welcoming and only minutes from charming Old Ellicott City. The organic, non toxic, and ammonia free products left my hair feeling soft and silky. I have curly hair and a lot of it. Not only was he able to tame my locks it but style them with ease. He created a beautiful new chic look for me and taught me how to recreate it. I've never had so many compliments both on the new style and my everyday curly look. While he cut my hair he explained the different techniques he uses for different types of hair. He has a casual elegance about him and was incredibly easy to chat with during the entire appointment! I went in expecting to get a basic trim but told Michael to do what ever he thought would work best. So glad I did, I have never been more happy with my hair! A wonderful first experience with Dawn at DMS Salon! Be fair warned that the drive up to the salon is a little steep! My goal was to get a cut for my Wavy hair with a tutorial on how to style my waves! Dawn spent so much time listening to my goals, cutting my hair, and explaining the process for washing and styling! I am SO glad I found this salon for my mother and I to start coming too!!! I was treated like they did not have time for me when I showed up for my appointment. I was told that she only had a few minutes to do my hair. My hair looked orange, and when I explained it was too orange for me she tried to convince me that it was not. I spent a lot of money in a couple of months trying to get the color correct and it still looked horrible. I was also charged for a treatment that was put on my head without me even asking for it each time I went. Save your money and get a better organic salon. read more
