I found the salon through StyleSeat and then happened to know someone who gets her hair done here by Ora. I went on a Saturday for a color and silk press on my natural, thick hair. My experience was less than pleasing. I am not in the cosmetology business and maybe ignorant but what is it about salons booking a ton of heads when only two people are working? (One full stylist and one washer/blow dryer that day). My appointment was at 11. I wasn't in a seat until noon. I didn't leave until 5. I know that I had no idea what color I wanted. And even though Ora did try to help, I felt very much like an inconvenience to her. I was a new customer, who explained that I had only had permanent color done once. And she still seemed a little peeved at me not knowing what I wanted. She's the expert. Shouldn't she be able to help? And happily? When I complained that my head was tingling (reminiscent of the prelude to burning when I got my hair relaxed years and years ago) she made it seem like that was normal and that I needed to try to stay under longer to get the best color/effect. So I did. It took forever while she tended to the many other customers. But it very much felt like the dryer was her way of putting me and my services on the bench for a bit so she could do others. I will say that without a doubt my hair looked great once completely done. The color was amazing, the press was great. I didn't love the style but I figured I would just mess with it when I got home. I asked about waves like hers but she said it would be more money. To. Do. Some. Waves. With the same flatiron. So I just let it go. I paid 200 or so dollars which I know might not be a lot but for someone who never goes to salons and has been tending to her own natural/no-heat hair for years, it felt like so much for poor service. That was fine. It was what happened after that is the reason I am writing this review. I waited a few months to decide if I wanted to write this. But after multiple washes, pure aloe vera, masks, and deep conditioning treatments, I know my hair is ruined. More than five years of growing out and not putting heat on my hair -- all in the garbage. My curls are ruined. All I have to do is brush my hair and my natural, afro hair stays straight. Never, not since I used to relax my hair and started transitioning and saw my real texture, has my hair looked like this. I have cried. I have spent lots of money. And now to find some peace, I am writing this review. I genuinely DO NOT remember either Ora or her niece putting any type of heat protectant on my hair. I think at one point I even asked because I was worried. I warned her a billion times that my hair was NO HEAT NATURAL as of five years. No heat (save once). Or permanent die. Or relaxer. No precautions taken by Ora. And I know it's not just my hair because my own sister had tried to straighten my hair just once over that period of time and my curls came right back. The only thing I liked about myself -- thick hair on my head that I've learned to grow and protect -- is now gone. And I spent 200 dollars to ruin it. I will never be going back here. And unless you are not having service done on your real, natural hair (wig and weave), I would caution other newbie hair salon goers from going here too. Aside from the rudeness, tardiness, pricey-ness, etc, the most important thing is that my hair is ruined. read more

I found Ora's page on Instagram. I really appreciate how the ladies make you feel wanted in the salon. Overall, the ladies are very professional. My Silk Press with trim came left me looking amazing and I am very satisfied with Ora's quality of work. The shampoo girl is a fresh of breath air. Nice big sized room. Floor to ceiling windows. Only one chair for customers to sit and wait. Too many appointments but only one washer and dryer. And only one stylist. Felt like an inconvenience. I asked for hair cut but she trimmed so badly, burnt my face, didn't even apologize, continued like nothing happened. I was scared not knowing what she would do next. I have to start by saying I was very disappointed. I came across this salon a few weeks back while out to lunch with my boyfriend at the Bread and Circuses, which sits just a few steps away. There was a sign for the salon sitting on the sidewalk and I decided to take a picture of it so that I could remember to check out the website for it later. After browsing the website and Facebook page, I decided that when the time came to get my hair done, I would make Pink & Black Hair Studio my salon of choice, as my current one was located too far from home and my stylist is hard to contact. Today ended up being the day that I would come to Pink & Black. I arrived around noon to find the door locked. Confused, I called the number on the sign, and someone answered. I asked how I was supposed to enter the salon since the front door was locked. (Maybe there was a side entrance?) The young lady tells me that the stylist(s) has/have stepped out for lunch. (A "Be back in --- min" sign would have been nice). The young woman then asks if I have an appointment. Confused, I tell her "No," and she tells me "Sorry, we only take appointments." Well see, here is where my real qualm with this whole situation arises, the sign that I saw that day a few weeks ago on the sidewalk says in large letters, "Walk-ins Welcome!" The sign located inside of the door, just at the bottom of the steps, also says the same. No where on the website or Facebook page does it explicitly state "By Appointment Only." Now to add insult to injury, I called back about an hour later to schedule and appointment for tomorrow (Friday). No one answers, so I leave a voicemail detailing my name, number, and the service that I was requesting to have done since I could not book this service on StyleSeat only to have my call not returned. I was excited to visit this salon and have my hair styled by Ora, or whomever else works there, and prior to this, was recommending you to many of my friends. After this experience, I'm not sure I'll ever pay a visit to this salon again, and instead make the hour long drive to Laurel. My advice to you, do not advertise "Walk-ins Welcome" when you only take customers based on appointments. *Edit* I have also just noticed that on the Yelp page, for the "By Appointment Only" field, it states "No", meaning no appointment is needed. Maybe there is a miscommunication between staff, but this needs to be addressed. read more

Ora did my hair and I was really happy with the outcome!! She was friendly and talkative during the appointment. I got the silk press done for the first time and she asked me questions about my hair type and what I do with my hair regularly. She was very gentle with my hair and considerate of how I was feeling during the appointment. She even showed me her favorite hair products and gave me some recommendations. The appointment was quick too! I came in at 10:30 and I was able to leave around 11:40. I was a client of Ora's. I like my hair in a pixie cut. I decided to go natural just to see how my hair would react. It was about a year and a half. Didn't work out. Called Ora for an appointment and she told me that she don't do pixie cuts any longer. She used to always ask why and I told her that I don't like long hair anymore. I went to Pink & Black Hair Studio a few days ago and the owner Ora did a wonderful job with my hair! I had another appointment that ran over so I arrived late to the salon and Ora was still able to accommodate me and finish my hair in no time! The owner is amazing! Very talented in color and cut. She's a very inviting person and very accommodating. She took time to really understand what I wanted and she executed it! This review is waaaay overdue because I've been a client of this salon for over a year now. I came to Ora a year ago after deciding to remove my dreadlocks of 18years and take my hair in a different direction. I had no idea what that direction would be but I put myself in Ora's hands and she has ALWAYS delivered. She does a sew in weave for me and I absolutely LOVE it. Ora is creative and talented. My hair ALWAYS looks great. I receive compliments daily. I enjoy having her do my hair. She is very personable, accommodating, and kind.. She is detail oriented with each of her clients. And she makes sure to recommend services might be of interest to her clients. I could go on and on about how much Ive enjoyed her as my stylist!! This is my first review ever. I am writing this because I was extremely disappointed with the service. Ora did my hair and she was very rude let me explain this was my first time having someone do my hair since I moved to Baltimore and I let her know that,I guess she wanted it to be my first and last time coming to her (no my hair is not hard to deal with) she yanked and pulled on my head (I mean my head was dancing ya'll) she didn't engage in conversation when I tried to talk to her neither did she try to talk to me about even the weather, and last but not least babygirl said "Im finished " got up walked away and said "its $70.00 with her back facing me while she is walking away. These pics you see don't belive it she didn't slick no edges down or nothing.(Damn Ora why you do me like that) Anyway I paid,said thank you she shook her head and said you welcome (i bet the hell I am my foolish ass 70.00 damn dollars for wash and whatever the hell she did with the flat iron. I'm not the one to write a bad review but I'm quite frustrated. I have gone to Ora about 4 times and each time I leave satisfied. Every time I have gone to her I had always made an appointment, but today I was in desperate need and I remember her sign stating that she accepts walk ins so I called and asked if she is free and she said not till after 430p so I asked if I could come in around that time and she said she would call me back in 10 mins and will let me know. About 2 hrs go by and I have not heard anything back so I called and asked her again and I got the same response, she will call me back in 10 minutes now I had the tough decision of waiting back to hear from her or go to the Dominican salon before they close at 4p, mind you it was already 345p so I didn't wait to hear back from her my time is valuable and I needed my hair done. Surprisingly she called back 15 mins later but it was too late so I didn't answer so I don't know if she was willing to see me or not but owell. She does great work but she is rude and unprofessional she will not have to worry about me again!!! read more
