Wish I could give 0 stars. Worst experience of my life. They decided to suspend my license. Why? Because I had 12 demerit points (2 speeding tickets in one year) and I didn't take the driver improvement course. That's not even the real problem; it is what it is, I should've been more careful and gone to court to fight the tickets. The real issue is that I had no idea I needed to take a driver improvement course because they sent all the information to the wrong address and had confirmation from the post office that I didn't receive it. It gets worse. I'm like, "It's okay, these things happen. Let me just get it figured out." I call the DMV on Friday (the very day I found out all this information). I even go to the DMV and am helped by a representative. Both people (on the phone and in person) assure me once I take the course, I should wait 24 hours for the driver improvement course company to send my certificate of completion to the DMV. If they don't send it within 24 hours, I can come to the DMV with my certificate and they'll get me a new license that day. I ask the representative if I can at least pay the $178 fee (I mean how else would they get revenue without extortion involving broke college students). The representative assured me I shouldn't pay it now because they'll waive the fee once I take the course. I breathe a sigh of relief as I couldn't afford that fee. Yet, when I get to the DMV with my certificate I printed out after completing the course, they not only tell me the fee will NEVER be waived and that I received false information, they also tell me the course I took doesn't count. Not one, not two, but three of your representatives gave me false information? They also tell me now they can't take that copy of my certificate because it's not official--the official certificate is being sent to the DMV from the company's end and would take days if not weeks. I explain that I'm about to lose my job if I take several days or weeks off and will be homeless. I can't afford this. They tell me tough luck, "not our problem." Not your problem? I want to know why some DMV representatives are assuring me I don't need to pay the fee and that I can come to the DMV with my certificate and others are gaslighting me saying "we would never say that." I'm gaslit enough by my family, I don't need to be gaslit by the government, too. I finally come back with an official certificate that I begged the driver improvement course to give me for personal use in addition to sending the certificate to the DMV. What does the DMV do now? "Sorry, we can't take this because it's electronic, you need to print it and bring it back." So, I tell them no problem, I'll go and print it and bring it back. BUT THEN they tell me THAT doesn't count either, "we actually need the company to fax it to us." I finally just gave up. I'm traumatized. read more

If you are far enough back in the line after waiting for 3 hours, the guard says you can't come in....yeah. I'm not sure where to start.....it's all so horrific. In think a colonoscopy might be more fun. Maybe a root canal without novocaine... I booked an appointment a month ago. The only "available" time was today (Friday 6-26) at 3:15 pm. On my calendar, in the day planner....I wasn't going to miss this. I took the day off from work because the last time I had to go through this S it took 6 hours. I was planning to be in the car at 2, thinking there's some type of accident, protest, road closure, stupid useless construction making me go through south Florida to get to Leesburg. Not bad, I was there just before three. I stopped to get gas. The security people were nice, asked a few questions and I was inside. The people hanging around outside WITHOUT MASKS were a nice touch since 'appointment only' was on about 500 signs. Go home people and book an appointment for 2 months from now. Out of state like Florida, Texas, California, Maryland, Maryland, Florida, Texas or North Carolina don't bother, it's only Virginia residents/taxpayers/suckers who get screwed for stickers that expire. Out of state, expect the key to the city. Why would VSP pull you over when they can come after a taxpayer/job holder that's local? Regardless, I'm inside and talking to the information desk through a sheet of plastic. I had to explain why I was there ....maybe three times. Finally I'm assigned a chair and a number with a form to fill out. Typical DMV, 13 stations and 4 open. It was like that in 1997. Nothing changes with these clowns. "we're the DMV and we KNOW you need something from us so expect to be treated like S and eventually we will get to you". I watch the guy before me...she took his picture maybe 10 times. Maybe they are casting for tv or something. 40 minutes after I sit down, the teller looks at me. No smile, just sort of looks my way. I get up and "what can I do for you?". I say licence renewal. She walks away....to talk to another teller who comes over to ask about my SSN. "Has it changed"?" OK, I'm not sure how you can do this but I answer and the snippy starts. The second teller walks away and the one "helping" me glares at me like I'm robbing the place. She is typing in the computer and it's back and forth (I guess) to get approval for something on the screen. The people helping the woman helping me for the most part are pleasant. Finally , it's picture time....woohoo...making progress. The first pic apparently didn't take. Second one, same. Next we switch to the station to my left, the camera was turned on this time, the picture (I guess, I never saw it) took and I pay the $42. More glare from the teller, as I paid in cash. Royally disgusted with me at this point, stamp....stamp....and I m out the door. I will be moving away in a few weeks, but I know what happens the day my licence expires...."licence, registration and insurance please". I wish I could say avoid these people but don't register your car here. Out of state has the luxury of paying no taxes, no stupid stickers for the plate, no windshield stickers, no ass rape inspections where something is always wrong. Simple. Keep the plates from Jersey, Florida, Maryland, California....wherever...shoot don't bother with plates at all. In state gets pulled over, out of state gets a free pass. I walk in at 11:59 AM on a Saturday and I immediately was treated horribly and unprofessional because apparently they actually close at noon on Saturdays. The employees were making comments "sorry guys she walked in 1 minute before closing time" and preceded to rush me around and were displaying and projecting their frustration onto me, even though I was unaware they indeed closed at noon based on the hours of operation that were displayed on Google maps. I informed them that the hours were displayed wrong on Google maps and they responded with "no it's not, you must be mistaken" and "well did you check our website, that's only Google maps". I REALLY wish I could give negative stars for this review. GO TO A DIFFERENT DMV LOCATION! First of all, as a disclaimer, I would like to say that on our first visit there, we waited for what felt like forever - which is generally to be expected at any DMV around lunch time (our fault, I understand that). What we didn't realize is that we were about to encounter the absolute worst customer service by employees who clearly hate their jobs and working with people. We were there so my boyfriend could obtain a license, after many years of not having a valid one (but he did previously have a license). When we were at the front counter, being checked in (or whatever you want to call it), the lady continuously asked him to see his license - which AGAIN is why were there. Okay, maybe she didn't understand the first time, which is fine, but after multiple times explaining why were there, it started to feel like we were reinventing the wheel. Anyway, moving on... So we wait, and wait, and wait. He finally takes the written exam and passes - cool. Much to our dismay, we were then informed that he could not take the driving test the same day, and we would need to schedule an appointment to come back the next day - ridiculous. We were told that day that the following day, we would not have to wait in line and we would be in and out within an hour. So here we are, the next day. We had to complete the exact same paperwork as the day before, complete the eye exam (again), and take his picture (again). The employee was extremely rude when she learned that we did not bring multiple forms of verification of his address, which we did not think we would need to bring as we did all of this LESS THAN 24 HOURS AGO!!! Anyway, here we sit, over an hour later, and he still has not been taken out for his road test. I'm glad we didn't have anything else to do these two days we have wasted at the DMV. My son needed a driver's permit and we knew the day after Christmas would be bad. The line was 200+ by the time they opened but the staff worked efficiently but still friendly. The key is to show up early. 7am (1hr before they open) seems to be the magic hour. We were met with a friendly rep in 7 minutes. He also gave my son testing tips and reassurance. I do understand the long wait at the dmv can be horrible but I know the staff are doing their best with limited resources. I don't understand why they don't hire part time personnel to assist during evening and weekends hours, I am sure there are lots of people willing to do so. Their lines are obnoxiously long anyway but they allow half the employees to go on lunch at the same time majoring slowing down any progress instead of adding additional personnel for coverage during those times. Not smart. They also don't set the A/C at a reasonable temperature cooking us all in here standing around. There is absolutely no sense of urgency on anyone's part here. Just the absolute worst. I went yesterday to renew my license, and what a mess it was. The line to get a ticket was 35 minutes long. Then, they only had 4 people working the windows (whereas there are about 12 stations), so things moved very, very slowly. In the end, it only took 2 hours and 45 minutes to get my license. Fortunately I brought my laptop and turned on wi-fi hotspot on my phone, so I got some productivity out of the time. I feel sorry for the poor souls who weren't able to connect and completely tune out the DMV misery around them. I'm honestly not sure they could be more inefficient.
