Dobra Tea is a quaint little tea house in the center of downtown Burlington. The tea menu is vast and has a tea perfect for every mood and palate. I had the plum tea which was fragrant and smooth. I do have a couple of gripes though. The busted and old wicker furniture is not cutting it here. It's uncomfortable and cheap looking. I was expecting plush couches and pillowy sitting chairs. Instead my butt hurt instantly and I couldn't stretch my legs out at all because the squat tables were at such an odd height. The disaffected hipster staff is also kind of a turn off. I know you could care less about everything in life but you don't have to be a downer towards us patrons. Also, I shouldn't complain but, I found their use of outside pastries and sweet treats kind of weird. If you can't whip up you're own batch of cookies and brownies, why have them at all? I don't like the thought of my dessert sitting around for god knows how long on the counter. read more

To preface this review, I typically wouldn't seek out a place like Dobra on my own. Sure, I love tea, but I am in no way a tea connoisseur. I'm the type of girl who gets her tea from a bag or Starbucks, and every time I go to a place like Tealuxe or Infusions, I'm the slack-jawed yokel who stands agog at all the choices in front of her before settling on something really safe and boring. Also, Dobra tends to attract people who are high on spirituality and low on materialism, so you can imagine my discomfort at the prospect of going to such a place. I found that I had no reason for concern. The environment is incredibly soothing and relaxing. Low lights, earth tones, lots of candles, different types of exotic music, and saloons in the back complete with beaded curtains, Oriental rugs, and low tables with little pillows for sitting upon set the scene for relaxation while enjoying some top-notch teas. When presented with the tea menu (which is really a book), we were totally overwhelmed until we read some more about the different types of teas offered. At Dobra, one can get tea from virtually all over the world, and each comes with an interesting description. We settled on a blooming anemone black tea, the exact name of which escapes me. It was a lovely accompaniment to sitting at the sidewalk on Church Street, people-watching on a gorgeous August day. The staff were also quite pleasant and very knowledgeable, which is obviously a requirement to work at a place like Dobra, where people take their tea seriously. The total for our one pot of tea (which would have yielded multiple infusions of tea, had we stayed longer) was approximately $5, and I purchased two types of tea to bring home, including the type I had tried during my time there. Dobra is a lovely little relaxing place to sit down and have a cuppa after a day of shopping on Church Street. I'd definitely come back on another trip to Burlington. read more

I loved this place. I went in with my boyfriend after walking around one night while we were in town and it was great! The atmosphere is so chill and relaxed. Like you're in Thailand or somewhere getting pampered. Especially in the raised lounge areas where we sat. The tea was great, a little pricey but worth it. The service is interesting because you're supposed to ring a bell when you want a sever. It was really awkward. I felt like it was kind of belittling towards them, but they didn't seem to mind. It's the way it's done and when in Rome... They were very educated in the teas and so were the menus. I think we spent half of our time there just learning about tea with all the information they give you about where the tea comes from and stuff. Very neat. The only thing I didn't really like about the place is that there is WiFi. It's great and all but people will sit there for hours it seems only buying one pot of tea. And there is very limited seating in there. Before we snagged a lounge area we had to try and squeeze three people at this tiny round table that barely held two menus while one person and their computer hog up a table fit for four. Kind of annoying. Other than that. Great product, great service, great atmosphere, great location, GREAT TIME! read more

A great atmosphere for tea but it is slightly over rates considering the small amount of tea (most of which are weak). The aesthetics of the place is absolutely on point though, from furniture to the tea sets. The lighting gives off a very warm and cozy place, perfect for fall and winter seasons. However the day I went turned out to be a weird humid day in fall. I ordered a shared pot of Zu Cha green tea but the first batch of tea should have been steeped in longer. It was very weak. I also ordered a Lemon Orange Cake but it came out looking like some upside down glazed muffin. Like what. I probably will come here again just for the atmosphere but as for the menu, it's not really that great. Especially when it comes to the snack section. I didn't have any idea when I started going to Dobra in Portland that it was a small chain, so imagine my delight when I came across another one in Burlington one winter day. This place has a fantastic selection of tea organized in a book with an index, and the staff know how to steep it properly. Water refills come in a little glass pot with a candle underneath to keep the temperature stable. If you're into tea and in the area, I cannot recommend this place highly enough. If you like tea okay and want to expand your horizons, the staff are friendly and will help you try things out. The menu is all vegetarian with many vegan and gluten-free options marked and other allergens, including soy, are easy to avoid. This is such a nice little place. They have some old-school sit-on-the-floor platforms and a nice little tea set where you go through this interesting multi-stage process to get your tea (and can get a pretty much endless amount of tea out of it). They also have snacky food, much of it, for some reason, middle Eastern. It was tasty though overpriced. Good atmosphere, pleasant server. Wish they'd include a pot holder for making the tea, though, because the little cup you pour the water into to steep it before pouring it into the pot gets HOT! read more

It is just off the path from the Church Street Market in Burlington. It has absolutely perfect Bohemian chic vibe, including a cubby with poofs and a Japanese style dining table. The service was good once they realized we were there. The gentleman who made and served our tea was absolutely exceptional! He shared a little knowledge of our selected blend, explained how to make a perfect little pot, and left us feeling well cared for. We tried the chrysanthemum puer blend and ordered side of Vermont local honey. I loved it both with a little honey and unsweetened! My husband was better pleased with a little more honey than me. I fought with myself a bit on the rating, but one chose to give a four because it took the staff a while to realize we were there and to give us the bell. Huge selection of tea and very cool atmosphere. 3/5 because of the very rude service. As we came in no one helped us so we assumed we had to seat ourselves. When we did, all hell broke loose. One of the workers (I'm assuming manager/owner from their older appearance from the rest of the staff) came to our table to chastise us, telling us that two people had tried to seat us and that we really shouldn't seat ourselves. After apologizing and saying that we must not have heard the staff, they continued to be rude as they hurried our order and all around seemed peeved that we had stayed to enjoy some tea. It really wasn't that big of a deal (we sat ourselves at the only available table, no one was waiting before us) but this staff member's haughty attitude really made it seem like we'd terribly inconvenienced them. I've never seen so many different type of tea in one shop like this except for retail places. They have different well known teas from all over the world. The place is small but very cozy. Perfect for a first date. They give you a little bell, just ring it when you're ready to order. We just picked one since there are just too many. Besides tea, they also serve little appetizers. So we picked the hummus plate. You get the learn the art of drinking tea, it is so cool, but of course, something we dont have the patient to do at home. Went once to do work for a few orders and my partner ordered a Thai Iced Tea. It tasted wonderful and everyone was so kind and polite. Went a second time to do a ton of work with a friend as this is one of the only cafes in Burlington open after 5. I had forgotten my wallet and couldn't order, but continued to work. After what I thought was a kind direction as to where we should order if we needed, about an hour later, an employee or business owner came and said "You girls have been here a couple hours and we are kind of done," telling us to pack up and leave. I was misgendered and rudely kicked out. No one and no sign told us you had to order to use the space. This isn't a welcoming community space like I thought, just another moneymaking business who cares for profits and not people. Unfortunate. read more

We stopped by for bubble tea. We ordered 3 bubble teas and a chai. The place has an incredible selection of teas. The staff was friendly and informative. Perhaps, ordering a hot tea would have turned out better. Overall, the bubble tea lacked flavor (even though we paid extra to have peach added to it) and was watery. We paid $32 for 4 drinks plus tip. I would not recommend or return based on our experience. If you are looking for bubble tea, keep walking. read more

The tea is amazing but the service is troublesome. I moved seats after being served my tea to sit closer to the window and was confronted by one of the employees. He proceeded to sanitize the table and sternly say "you're not allowed to move tables, your bill is attached to your table". He did not say this with the intention of making me move but rather to communicate the "rules". I didn't respond as his tone was rude and made me uncomfortable. While he lifted my water bottle with his rubber cleaning gloves by the straw (ew), he repeated what he had said, followed by "do you understand?". Again, I stood there and didn't say anything but nodded my head-- I had not intentionally done anything wrong and his raised voice was demeaning. Again... he looked at me and said "do you understand?". I could tell he wasn't going to let it go until I responded-- he was on some sort of power trip and was on some mission to make me feel guilty and humiliated. I have been a regular customer for years but will not be returning because I felt unsafe and do not need to pay to be spoken to like a child. When I went to pay they do not allow you to choose how much to tip and I was forced to pay 20% on a 7$ tea...for one of the worst customer service experiences of my life. read more

We popped in on a blustery Monday afternoon to peruse their dry tea offerings and found some really cool stuff. Definitely a funky place, and one worth making an effort to visit if you are a fan of the black teas, as they had a crazy variety of options to offer, but we did find some great herbal tisane mixes and even got introduced to a green tea from Hawaii! The staff guys warmed up to us after a minute or so and we had a really great convo about their range of offerings and they packaged up our oz's efficiently and kindly. Definitely seems like a cool place to unplug and chillax - will try to make more time during a future return visit to really take it in. Prices are a bit higher than other tea areas, but they definitely had a more intensely curated list and really knew what was up. Worth a stop! read more

The place is very passionate about tea and tea culture. It has a very extensive tea menu, and a surprising amount of food. I enjoyed the service and appreciated the vegan options. I will say the bubble/boba tea lived up to the reviews I read about it here on Yelp - it doesn't seem like they make fresh tapioca pearls which is disappointing. But maybe it's hard to make fresh batches if so few customers order bubble tea. My only other issue would be I wish they had more comfortable chairs. read more

This tea shop is amazing! I love the calm atmosphere when you first walk in. I come here about, I don't know, a few times during the year... What can I say? I love tea and trying new ones! Every time I come here, I order a different one. I went here two weekends ago with a few friends. We arrived, and saw that the corner seating with the cushions were available! Once we were seated, we got our menus. We all decided to order the (oh my I already forgot!) the A Night in Prague? (I think thats what its called, my apologies if this wasn't the right name). We proceeded to order some flatbread with hummus because you can't complete it without some food! Anyways, after some time we finally got our tea and the food came out minutes later. Needless to say, Dobra Tea does not disappoint me every time. Everyone was very friendly and the tea was very good as well as the flatbread (which was still warm!) I used to love this place, but recently something has changed. The past two times I've been they have been in the middle of very loud group staff training. The things discussed should definitely not have been said in front of customers, and it was entirely too loud to be able to focus on anything else. There used to be a very zen vibe about the place but now even the soundtrack has changed and they are playing folk music, somehow songs about coal mining just don't work for the ambiance of an Asian tea house. It's rare that I have such a bad feeling about a place, and I kept coming back to try and like it because I am a tea lover. I am shaking my head as I write these words because just the tiniest bit of warmth coming from the snotty staff would go a long way. And did I mention the prices? a complete turn-off. I ordered the tulsi masala (think chai) and they charged me extra for milk and honey! I've only been to Dobra Tea once. I don't think I will go back any time soon. The tea I ordered was ok (although I don't remember what kind it was). It was my misfortune to go to Dobra at a moment when I was hungry in addition to having a desire for good tea. Had I not had a hankering for a snack I may be writing a very different review. Alas, that was not my fortune. Being hungry, I looked over the food menu. The assorted tea biscuits and dried fruit and nut plate sounded like good accompaniments to tea. Whoops. Our server left the main seating area and returned a few minutes later with, I kid you not, a bag of Costco dried fruit and nut mix. The cookies, also store bought, Voortman's I think. In other surroundings this might have not been as bothersome. However, when you bill yourself as a purveyor of fine quality goods, I tend to expect that level of quality throughout the menu. It may not be reasonable, but as soon as I saw the Costco bag I began to wonder about the quality of the teas. Were they what they were being billed? Dobra has the best Yerba Mate in all of Vermont, or New England for that matter. They don't slap together a quick teabag and hang it on a stick like the others. Dobra serves Mate properly, Argentine-style, loosely in a large gourd with a bombilla, and bring a pot of hot water to your table, heated by a small candle, so you can refill to your heart's content. I can't comment on the other teas, since I always order Mate. But they do have a mind-boggling selection and generally prepare each tea according to it its appopriate traditional method. It is dark, which I love, but if you're used to having a brightly-lit place for reading, then you might be better off somewhere else. I felt a bit like Abe Lincoln reading books by candlelight while trying to read my Kindle. As far as all the comments about the Costo-bought food, well, tea is so their thing and that's what they concentrate on. So if you're hungry, eat at Stone Soup first, and then come to Dobra for the tea.. The bell-ringing for ordering is a bit silly, and I feel sorry for the employees who most suffer a lot of Pavlovian post-teamatic stress when they go home after work. read more

I feel like I should write a poem, haiku, or sonnet to express my love for this wonderful tea room/shop in beautiful Burlington. (And I'm totally psyched to review Dobra Tea for my 200th review!) I've been looking forward to stopping here since the last time I visited the area, in the late Spring. I was completely elated when Dan (reluctantly... Ha!) agreed to round out our recent date here. I adore this place. I love the super chill vibe that caresses you the moment you walk through the door. The "War and Peace" sized menu of international tea options to leisurely browse through. The delightful, educated, kind (and insanely patient!) staff. I especially love that the teacups complement the nationality of the tea. (How do they DO that??) And that the tea itself is brewed to perfection, lovely and comforting. (I tried a Chinese tea, "Jin Zhen Golden Buds". It was light, delicious, and tasted of honey.) Yes, the wicker-esque chairs could definitely be more comfy, or better yet, be switched out for something softer and sturdier that I wouldn't have to worry about accidentally turning into splinters. And the food portion of the menu is a bit... Weak. (We tried the black sesame square thingys, and they really just weren't worth mentioning.) I certainly appreciate that Dobra Tea's absolute focus is on the tea quality, diversity, and authenticity as well as superior customer service. I quite honestly don't care about their limited snack menu, but I suppose if they are going to offer food, it should be up to the same standards as their phenomenal tea. I picked up some of the loose tea leaves to brew up when I got home. Totally reasonable prices, and very clear instructions for each particular tea. Love it. I most definitely plan on stopping here during every visit to Burlington. I'll whip up an ode to Dobra Tea in the meantime. read more

This one is epic. I have a special connection with this place that goes back long before they opened. When I lived in Austria and needed to get away from it all, I would throw on a backpack and jump a train to my favorite place on earth. Czesky Krumlov is a sleepy little haven in the Southern Bohemia region of the Czech Republic. My favorite place within my favorite place was a teahouse on the bank of the river that snaked through the town and set the lazy pace of life. The teahouse was called Dobra Cajovna. The proprietors were young men with long beards who disliked the presence of German tourists and children, which kept the place a peaceful little sanctuary. I would sit there for hours every day, drinking countless cups of Yogi Tea while sketching and writing or the Turkish Red with a new friend in the saloons, which is what they call the little curtained-off rooms filled with velvet cushions and a hookah. In the summer we would sit and smoke and sip on the balcony that leaned out over the river, sheltered from the sun by bamboo curtains. Before he was allowed to open a teahouse, the man that ran Dobra Cajovna was required to tour the Orient learning about the tea he would be serving. The walls were lined with black and white photos of the man bringing me my tea in Tibet and Turkey, posing with the local masters, learning the way of tea. Not long after I returned to Burlington, a sign announced the opening of a shop called Dobra Tea in a space on Bank St. that once housed a hair salon. Soon after they opened, I visited the shop and was so struck (stricken?) by the similarities before I even reached my table, that I asked the gent I met at the door if they were connected with the place in Czesky Krumlov and sure enough, the company owned several shops in the Czech Republic and one in Burlington, Vermont. There is something special about the only Dobra outside of Europe being in my hometown, although their web site has a big banner ad for opening your own teahouse franchise. I am guessing that they don't require you to travel the Orient before granting a franchise. That day, he told me that the teahouse at Czesky Krumlov had been destroyed by a flood, but that they were in the process of rebuilding, so I am hoping that they will be there next time I make it back across the Atlantic. One of my favorite memories is of trying to order shisha along with a tea that the owner deemed inappropriate for smoking. He started by saying that the tea was not well suited as an accompaniment to flavored tobacco, and when I responded that I didn't mind, he said that he couldn't in good conscience take my order without trying to dissuade me. Although he would never outright refuse my order, he would not leave my side until I caught on that all of his suggestions were the polite and traditionally appropriate way of telling me that no way in hell would he bring me that tea and a pipe. I am certain that he had enough polite and evasive responses to leave me blue in the face before he would ever resort to a simple "no." In Burlington, they take a different approach to reach the same end. The pipe comes with a complimentary pot of appropriate tea. I think you can choose between the Turkish Red that I used to drink and a mint tea. The Burlington location is also the first to employ women, since we enforce those pesky equal-rights laws that some other countries don't seem to bother with. It's no big surprise that they are just as knowledgeable, chill and wise as the guys. The Burlington shop does a nice job of replicating the originals, and has overcome those bleeding-hearted liberal "no smoking in a teahouse" laws by serving the shisha outside, but that drastically limits the times of year you can smoke it. read more

Great place to chill with some loose leaf tea. It's a cozy little place with a wide variety of tea, and you really can't go wrong with any tea here. Seating is kinda tight. They do have some laying down & drink tea areas, but when you see a dude with long hair just chilling and sipping on tea, you know you're not gonna get your turn anytime soon. read more

Okay, no you probably shouldn't nap here, but their little tea sipping/sitting coves are comfortable enough to seduce you into a nap for sure so beware. Dobra Tea is definitely a must-visit when in Burlington. The beautiful decoration is one thing, the tea itself is another. But the folks working here make the experience really amazing. Tea is meant to be appreciated, enjoyed and shared. I love how the "devoteas" aren't snobbish and pretentious about their knowledge of the teas, because they easily could be if they wanted. They genuinely want to teach you the tea and help you enjoy it they best way it can and should be enjoyed. I also like how they offer you more water if needed/wanted right at the beginning when they serve you the tea. It's a nice gesture and is part of what makes Dobra such a warm and welcoming place. Regarding the actual tea: I had their Yerba Mate, which was definitely a treat. They've got such good quality tea here and keep it well, too. I've also tried one of their Puer teas. Last time I had a Puer, which was also my first time, was in China, and this was definitely on par with that experience! read more

Where else can you see white college students kneeling on the ground and playing Hindi music? This ain't Chicago, but Burlington's really an amazingly hip and progressive town for a city its size and lack of pigment variation. The tea menu is a freakin' bible in terms of voluminousness. The second time I came back, I couldn't find the drink I got the first time, and it doesn't help that there's no table of contents or page numbers. My favorite drink so far (this coming from someone who drank nothing more sophisticated than Celestial Seasons before coming here) is the Staroborshov. This Czech tea foams up with sugar and looks like a beer. I felt very cool drinking it amongst the Beta male tea drinkers. read more

What a GREAT tea house. Their menu is seriously impressive, and the staff really know their stuff. A nice bohemian vibe, low light, and comfy seating options. When you arrive, each member of your party is handed a faux leather bound menu with literally dozens of pages of tea. You also receive a small, golden bell, which you ring when you are ready to order. I LOVE this idea. It saves everybody the grief of not being ready/not knowing if your customer is ready. Ring when you're ready. A genius service concept. I had the blooming green tea and my boyfriend tried Mate for the first time. Each tea gets their own kettle filled with water, which comes sitting over a tea light candle to be used as a warmer. My green tea was possible the best and most beautiful I've ever had, and I drink a lot of green tea. My boyfriend went a little crazy on Mate, and needless to say, loved the highly concentrated caffeine it provided. The vibe of Dobra is really chill. There are tables close to the ground with oversized cushions in which you have to remove your shoes before you can sit. We unfortunately did not sit at one of these delightful tables, but rather placed our bums in comfortable wicker chairs at a table top. The whole vibe of the place was truly relaxing. We dipped in the Dobra house when it started raining on a Sunday afternoon, and stayed for a good hour. The thing I love most is that no body was in a hurry. You could just be there. They also serve small plates of food, like tapas and hummus plates. It looked good from what i could see of the other patrons tables! Get ready to read. The menu is a book, but a book full of information and descriptions of each tea. They offer a lot. They give you a bell to ring when you're ready to order. I'm not a big tea nut, but my sister suggested we stop in. The tea I got reminded me of Tazo Passion Tea and it was pretty good. No one had any complaints. We also tried some of the bakes goods and they were really tasty. Maple glazed donut, baklava, and some kind of lemon cake I think it was, that was really good. My only complaint was how dim the lighting was. Usually it's nice but it was to much. Staff was friendly. They also had teas and tea related items you could buy. If you aren't a tea lover, or interested in becoming a connoisseur of tea, then do yourself a favour: stop reading this review, because it will only be a waste of your time. Go to starbucks, go to muddy waters, go to uncommon grounds - they're all on Church street - you'll be far happier. Now for everyone else: it doesn't get much better than Dobra. You know when your host hands you a multi-page menu for teas, you're in a pretty awesome place. One of my favourite haunts in Burlington, it's a very middle-eastern inspired tea house, with seating in special (shoeless & chairless) seating in little mini-rooms as well as traditional seating with small tables and chairs. The staff is very, very well versed in the products they offer, and are able to answer nearly any question you have if you're confused or lost on the menu. You can also purchase bulk tea and unique tea pots and cups if you see something you like that you want to make at home. Personal favourites: Hot Matcha, Rose Tea, Turkish Tea, and Tulsi Basil. They serve in both cups & pots. It's a really unique experience for those wanting to try something out of the ordinary. My only complaints: street parking (which can be a nightmare downtown) and though it's part of its charm, the limited seating can be a bit of a headache. read more

What a beautifully designed little tea shop! I wish something like this existed closer to home. We arrived and grabbed a seat where we were presented with menus and a bell to ring when we were ready to order. After mulling over 40+ pages of teas (who knew there were so many?) we ordered the masala chai with milk, and the Kashmiri tea with coconut milk. Both were good, but definitely not brewed at the strength that we brew at home, so it was missing a bit more of the kick we liked. We also got some tea biscuits which were vegan and gluten free- and just delightful! The space is so peaceful you feel guilty for taking out your phones- which leaves the place feeling quite comfortable. If the chairs were made for those of us with more to love, I'd say it was perfect. Not perfect, but this place comes close! Make sure you check it out! read more
