I hadn't been to Doc Brown's for two years. It's a little roadside place away from the strip malls, darned near walking distance from my house. I'm very glad I stopped by, it was a quiet mid-afternoon. Service was as quick as I've had, I was in and out with lunch in no more than five minutes. I tried a pulled pork plate with macaroni salad, potato salad and cornbread, and two spare ribs. The cornbread was moist and very tasty with a hint of sweetness. The pulled pork was slightly dry and needed salt, but once salted and dosed with their house-made bbq sauce it made for a great lunch. The potato salad was great, very creamy with a little crunch and tang from red onion. The macaroni salad was OK, a bit bland. The ribs were the high point of the meal. Very large, meaty, juicy, tender. They did need just a touch of salt. All-in-all a very satisfying lunch. It won't be another two years before I'm back. read more

This is my favorite place to get lunch when traveling on I-40 through western North Carolina! We stopped over the Memorial Day weekend and were not disappointed. The menu is posted on a chalkboard behind the register and changes if they run out of something. One orders at the register and the food is brought to the table. There are several choices of barbecue sauce available at the tables. It's not a large establishment, but there has always been enough room when we were there. I understand that there is live music on the patio out front on the weekends, but we haven't experienced that at lunchtime. This time Hubby ordered a pork sandwich with the macaroni and cheese casserole, and I had potato salad with a smoked chicken salad sandwich. What delicious food! We ordered takeout from Doc Brown's and absolutely loved it. We had the pulled pork and the tri-tip. Both were delicious. I loved the collards as well! The tri-tip must be popular because my husband said we had the last plate. That was around 1 o'clock on a Wednesday afternoon. He said the time it took to order and received the food was pretty quick. It came back piping hot! I also loved the potato salad. Delicious! We loved the three styles of ribs and the brisket--they were all incredible. The sides were just as good, especially the coleslaw, baked beans, and cornbread. It's real, comforting food done right. I was a little surprised to find the parking lot almost empty on a Friday night. That seemed odd, but not necessarily a bad sign. After all, a lot of folks order carry out and DoorDash these days. Upon stepping inside, however, I found the dining room a little hot and stuffy. It wasn't intolerable, just a bit uncomfortable. Undeterred, I went ahead and ordered their pulled beef plate with two sides. I expected the beef to be similar to what I would get if I ordered pulled pork, but it was different. It was cooked in a sweet sauce, with onions and peppers laced throughout. In fact, it seemed more like a stew than anything else. The flavor wasn't bad, but pretty average. The macaroni and cheese was nice and warm and had a decent flavor, but it wasn't very fresh. The baked beans were probably the highlight of my meal. They had a good mix of pinto and navy beans, and the sauce complimented them nicely. While slightly disappointed, I might consider returning here. I would just make sure to order something different. read more

The barbecue sides were definitely the star of the show. I should know better in North Carolina than to order brisket, I am a serious Texas style brisket snob, and this brisket was a bit underwhelming. But the sides were really awesome. I had never had fried cabbage, and I really liked it a lot. My wife loved the Black Eyed Peas, and we both thought the sweet potato casserole was one of the best we've ever had. They are well known for their mac & cheese and with good reason. It was really tasty, it had excellent seasoning in flavor. Next time we come back, I will go with the pulled pork. But I totally give four stars for amazing barbecue sides. This is definitely a Bbq spot we will be back to again! read more

My favorite BBQ place of my trip to the area. I only made it to four (and there's so many more in a fairly short radius), but I loved the no frills atmosphere, friendly service, and great food. Particularly the spare ribs, and more specifically the dry rub option, despite my gut telling me I'dlike the wet better. It's not near much from a tourist perspective, which is partly what landed me there...the hope that the food would stand on its own, without high volume foot traffic to float the business. Well that hope turned into reality. If you happen to be passing through and in need of a quick bite (dine in or take out), Doc's is a great option. Stopped in out of desperation to find some authentic NC BBQ while traveling back home in GA. Employees were super friendly. We had a whole conversation with a gentleman who made sure we had everything we ordered. The dining area was a little warm and stuffy but we hardly noticed once we started eating. The pulled pork sandwich is HUGE. They also have authentic Carolina Gold mustard sauce. It's hard for me to find in GA so I was excited. That was fine for me because I was going to take it back to the cabin. The pulled pork was very juicy and not greasy. I tried both the vinegar sauce and mustard sauce. Both were very good, but I preferred the vinegar sauce. The macaroni and cheese was excellent. The collard greens were very good as well. We were visiting the area from the Midwest and I always look for a BBQ place to visit as I like to smoke meats on my grills. We choose doc browns. Driving we almost went past it as the sign is either damaged or missing, but we parked. It's nice and cozy inside and the menu had many options. We tried a lot of the food and everything was fast hot and tasty. The only downside would be the banana pudding. For 4$ it was maybe 4-5 bites. Bought some sauce to take home with me. A hidden gem on the side of the highway. Initially I was taken again because they were out of pulled pork but they suggested the ribs as an alternative...$3 per rib? Seems a tad excessive (so I ordered 4) but let me tell you these are not your average ribs. They are MASSIVE and delicious, I opted for the glazed but the dry rub is also a fan favorite. If you do get the glazed ribs, do yourself a favor and pair it with the mustard bbq sauce and thank me later. The vinegar sauce is also a winner. My only real criticism is the Mac and cheese could've used more seasoning/salt but I walked away very satisfied. 8.4/10 read more

Stopped off one evening on our way back to WS. The _only_ reason I'm dropping a star is because they run out of the good stuff early. The I got the chopped beef, which was a great combination of flavors - it was prepped like a sloppy joe and was delicious. The mustard slaw was fantastic and the collards were pretty good too. Olivia, our server, was fantastic giving us great advice and taking great care of us. The kitchen was fast and the food came out piping hot. 2nd Response to Owner: I refrained from calling you a lier but rather said it was a lie. Now I will use your language in first comment, you are a liar for sure. She asked why I had my service dog, I sad ptsd, anxiety, etc. so don't thank me for my service when it's not respected there & I don't need a thanks...it was an honor! That (me saying PTSD/anxiety) should have been enough as well as fact I said she was a service dog. Heaven forbid I do not spell everything out to a perfect stranger at a restaurant as I'm shocked that I have to discuss my disability to get service. Secondly, you weren't in the front and were at least 10 to 15 feet in back so maybe u heard some but you definitely did not hear the entire conversation! Third, me calling her a young lady is called manners as I have no idea her age. Berate means to rebuke, chide or scold angrily and at length and/or vehemently. Which neither my wife nor I did! She simply walked out and after she told me, I came in because in my mind I knew it had to be a misunderstanding; but it was not. If you think me stating my dog was a registered service animal, that she is for anxiety, ptsd..., and then state that it is law was berating, well I'll just say you are incorrect. And yes, it is federal law as well as state law. I guess I should have typed that as well in my comment. I definitely wasn't angry. No...I was surprised, disappointed, and shocked as I've been in "down home" restaurants, chain restaurants, and Michelin rated restaurants and never had an issue until your establishment. You definitely haven't responded as if you cared about customer service! My wife responded: "but she is my husband's service dog." The young lady specifically said "it doesn't matter." My wife was aggravated and went outside. When I saw my wife outside, I went out there (after coming out of bathroom) and said, "you don't want to eat here?" She explained and I went in b/c I figured it was a misunderstanding! I never berated here for goodness sake & even told here it was law that she was allowed in. It is a violation to even ask what the nature of medical disability is but I still said PTSD, anxiety, and a a bit more because I figured she didn't know the law. That's when she said you can sit outside. You are definitely defending something that is indefensible as I never raised my voice. I told her she was registered and that it was state law If I could go negative 10, I would. First they violated NC law & federal law by not allowing service animals. When she was informed that the service animal had documentation, she violated HIPAA and asked what my disability was! Also, after telling her I'm a medically retired Veteran and she was my service dog, she said "you can sit outside!" Veterans, families of Veterans, & dog lovers do not eat here as they could give two sh$ts about Veterans or service animals, clearly don't give a d@mn about HIPAA laws. While many may think I'm of the nature of giving bad reviews, I'm not and believe this is the first one I've done ever. Doc Brown's BBQ was an incredibly pleasant barbecue surprise! We were anticipating a food truck, and were greeted by a cute little restaurant with 10 tables. Olivia, the very friendly hostess and waitress, sold us on the "slaw flight" and peanut butter pie that she made herself! She also educated us on the sauces available on our table I ordered the pulled pork plate with a side of macaroni and cheese and collard greens, and my husband enjoyed the barbecued meat loaf. We got pulled pork for takeout a few months back. Maybe we caught them on a bad day, but the pork tasted old, watery, and had a certain old,gaminess to it. I've had lots of barbecue all over the United States. Good BBQ to me does not have to be smothered sauce to taste good. I have to say this did not taste very good on its own. I Should have called the management and let them know. So I suppose we should try them again. read more
