I had reservations at Luminosa for about a month now, but my husband was in the mood for BBQ. I'm not the biggest BBQ fan and personally would have preferred a nice Italian dinner, but decided to be a nice wife and find him the best BBQ on Yelp. Luella's won! We stopped in early after a bike ride. There was plenty of parking out front, which we appreciated because finding parking at some other restaurants in Asheville proved to be a big challenging. We were dressed for biking, but the place was pretty casual. It was also an adorable restaurant. My husband went with the brisket platter and I (with the help of the helpful man behind the cashier) ordered the burnt ends brisket sandwich. I got a side of the deviled eggs, which looked really good too. The brisket had a little too much sauce for my liking, but i tried to rub some off and ate the brisket along with the 3 deviled eggs (as good as they looked). I also helped myself to some of my husbands sweet potato chips, which were also delicious. And he was very happy with the rest of his meal as well. It was a lovely night in Asheville so we enjoyed this on their patio, which we had all to ourselves. And while BBQ isn't usually my cuisine of choice have to admit that was pretty tasty and my BBQ loving husband was thrilled. read more

This place brings back memories. It was one of the first places I ate in Asheville as an adult. I really love that I can still enjoy it as a Vegan now. I love the Tempeh and the fried okra. Delicious food, very traditional NC barbecue. Interesting take on hush puppies. Highly recommend the pisgah bbq sauce (table favorite). Baked beans almost tasted like meatless barbecue chilI and the slaw is heavily vinegar/mustard seed based but like I said, traditional NC bbq. Mac and cheese was incredible and the smoked wings stole the show. All meat was on the warmer side purely as a heads up (vs hot). This bbq spot was recommended by one of the locals. This is a casual spot that gets crowded so we came early. I ordered the pulled pork and my companion had the brisket. Plenty of sides to choose from -- we had collard greens, mac n cheese, coleslaw (they didn't give me deviled eggs), and cups of the bbq sauce. I also tried some sweet tea (so sweet!). This was the best BBQ we have ever had in WNC and we have been to many spots in the Asheville/Boone area. The burnt ends were super flavorful. The pork was super juicy. The Mac was really creamy and complemented the burnt ends and fresh tomatoes well. The slaw was super vinegary it will make you pucker lol. Deviled Eggs taste like grandmas. Lots of sauce options to choose from and the ones we tried had so much flavor. Cute indoor and outdoor seating options. Close to UNC Asheville campus. Limeade was perfect! Couldn't leave North Carolina without getting some good BBQ and Luella's absolutely delivered! We arrived for an early dinner before our flight around 4pm and we were the only ones there (until about 4:30). This is important since with many BBQ places, quality control can be difficult if you're not eating during the peak busy times. Looking through the menu, I was immediately surprised and also happy about the extremely affordable prices, but also the fact that you can get small portions/cuts of pretty much everything (meats/sides). Usually at BBQ places, you end up having so much left over since the minimum weight is much higher. Luella's has 5oz meat cuts and small sides which was the perfect opportunity for the 2 of us to try as many things as we could. Both the pulled chicken and the chopped pork were excellent! They were so juicy and moist. Especially for the chicken being white meat, that was amazing. The tempeh was also a huge hit! You never see a non-meat protein and so not only having tempeh but it being great was just awesome. The brisket was very good and the fatty pieces were perfect. Some of the cuts without the fat were not as ideal but still good. And they did not miss with any of the sides! (Also everything comes with complimentary hushpuppies). Fried okra, vinegar slaw, baked beans, green beans, brunswick stew. Yes yes yes yes yes. We ended with the banana pudding which was a perfect 'palate' cleanser to the meal. Service and ambiance was better than expected because what I got only came out in a matter of minutes. I got a combo tray with brisket, dry-rubbed wings, Calico Baked Beans, potato salad, celery, Lusty Mustard Sauce, and Scooter's Vinegar sauce. The brisket was entirely melt in your mouth. The wings were well-seasoned and moist in the center. Even though I usually prefer warm potato salad, it and the beans were excellent sides. The brisket is chopped, most likely because the portion looks a lot smaller otherwise. Both the brisket and ribs seemed to be similarly seasoned with the brisket being more tender and moist. We have been going to Luella's near UNCA for at least 15 years. I have to say after a recent visit this week it was one the worst BBQ meals we've ever had. What happened?! Our ribs were literally 1/2 raw and more fat than meat. The vinegar slaw was rancid tasting, and my BBQ pork sandwich was dry and the bun was stale. Fries were soggy and the baked beans were liquidy with beans. Everything was off and terrible tasting. So sad because it used to be a staple every time we were in the area. To the owner... Little on the dry side and could use more flavor. The sides were also good, but nothing really exceptional. Ate here on our last trip to Asheville a few years ago and enjoyed it so much, we made it our first choice for dinner on our recent trip back! We've always gotten their food to-go, and not only is it delicious when we get it home, it's still great warmed up as leftovers the next day. We were ordering for 15 people, so we took advantage of their BBQ Family Pack - 2lbs of pork or chicken, 4 buns, 3 sides, a dozen hush puppies, and sauces. So two family packs and 3 extra pounds of brisket for our group, and not only was it plenty, but we had leftovers to share the next day. Plus it only came out to about $250 - which for 15 people is a great price. While all their meat was delicious, their brisket is where they shined. Tender, smoky, and so flavorful. And their mac n cheese and fried okra were the best of the sides - couldn't get any better. Highly recommend getting their BBQ while in the Asheville area. I appreciated the tempeh, as most bbq places don't provide a vegetarian option, but I felt the serving size was a little small for the price being paid. Even with the mac-n-cheese and fried okra as sides I felt hungry an hour later. Husband had the half rack of ribs, which were well seasoned but not especially filling. Son got the mac-n-cheese and fried chicken, and he liked the chicken but felt the mac wasn't cheesy enough. We closed out our Asheville trip with BBQ and I think we picked the best spot to do so! Luella's was just outside downtown and perfect for a rainy dinner. Everyone was very friendly and we beat the crowds going around 4pm on a Friday. We loved that they had build your own trays where you pick the meat and it comes in 5oz portions. We were able to try the chicken, brisket, pork, and tempeh. Chicken was moist! Pork and brisket were great and perfect to pair with any bbq sauce. The tempeh though! Wow what a surprise. I've never seen bbq tempeh and I was excited to have a veg option on the plate. It was so good. The sides were spectacular! Fried okra was super crispy, hush puppies were a nice addition, stew was flavorful, and the beans were so good. Green beans were a little salty but who cares about health on a vacation? Didn't stop me from leaning the plate. The banana pudding is also a smaller portion which is great after you're stuffed. I liked that it was more pudding than whip, seems like a lot of places are heavy whip and not a lot of pudding. Luella's was a perfect ending to a perfect trip and it is definitely on my recommendation list for anyone going to Asheville. read more

I was in Asheville for a group trip and suggested Luella's for a takeout night because we wanted BBQ, but a few people in the group had dietary restrictions and we liked that their menu had tempeh and chicken. We went to pick up the order, and luckily we checked it before leaving because we were missing our 20 smoked wings for $37.45 - not cheap! We informed someone and they didn't believe us so they searched our whole bag. This happened at least 3 more times by different people which I found kind of odd. We hadn't even left the restaurant yet so where would we have hidden a big box of 20 wings? Eventually they believed us and made us a new order but we had to wait an additional 30 minutes. I would definitely recommend checking your order if you get takeout here. As far as the food, I really enjoyed the BBQ tempeh, the smoked wings, housemade sweet potato chips, and the fried okra. We also shared a BBQ family pack with 2 lbs of pulled meat. This came with 3 medium sides and 4 buns so you can make yourself a sandwich if you want. Everything was generously portioned. read more

Situated near the University of North Carolina Asheville, this fabulous barbecue place has some of the best barbecue around. My son had a sliced brisket sandwich with sweet potato chips, he totally cleaned his plate. I had the pulled pork sandwich with the North Carolina style barbecue sauce, little coleslaw, some fabulous hush puppies, fried okra and some of the most amazing full flavored baked beans I've had in a long time. The wait was short and the service was excellent. They seem to be staffed well. Seating was comfortable with both indoor and outdoor selections. The pulled chicken with the sauce was different but tasty. I don't typically like mustard and ketchup, which is what's in the sauce, but I'd eat it again. The mac and cheese was a little bland but cheesy, just needs a little more seasoning to be worth the price. Also would help to have a bigger portion for $3. Loved the hush puppies. Seasoned and fried well. Liked that it came with every meal. Smoked wings were good, decent flavor on it. If we're in the mood for smoked wings, we'd get these again. Pulled pork was average. The whole interaction had an energy like we weren't really welcome, even though we showed up 45 minutes before closing. The only thing that came out hot, were the very tasty hush puppies. The greens were very good, but included a lot of stems. The green beans weren't seasoned with anything except garlic. Passing through Asheville on our way back to Nashville TN from the Chapel Hill area. Stopped in for some Carolina BBQ and we were not disappointed! Got a super friendly welcome as soon as we opened the front door, followed by a difficult-to-choose-from menu, excellent service, and delicious food. We both ordered the chopped pork with two sides, he had a local ale, I had Prosecco, and shared a tasty deviled egg starter. Everything was fresh, nicely seasoned, and very homemade tasting. We tried three of the five or six different sauces they offer, and decided the mustard sauce was our favorite by far. We will stop again when we are next in area.
