Dodomi has steadily gone downhill over the past few months. They went from being a perfectly fine neighborhood sushi joint with a cool conveyer belt to now serving tilapia where the listed ingredient is yellowtail. On their ayce menu, you can no longer find the pricier items like salmon roe or tako and they will tell you they are out of salmon collars every time. They have significantly raised their prices and are now more expensive than other ayce sushi place which ~will have those items I mentioned. Much better alternatives elsewhere, especially for ayce, sad to say. read more

Another great yelp find! First off to my fellow suburbanites...Dodomi has a parking lot! Shared with fellow businesses there is a decent amount of parking. We were greeted immediately and our sever explained their ordering options. You can either pay per item or do all you can eat. After reviewing my options, I went for the pay per plate. I ordered one roll from the tablet and had a couple of plates from the conveyor. Good amount of choices. Prices very reasonable. I don't get to this part of the city often, but I enjoyed my meal. This review is for the dine-in experience. Dodomi Sushi Rotary is a cute and color addition to the Uptown area. The Queen use to go to the former place, Wabi Sabi, but did some take out from here and liked it. I took a gander at the take out and saw two acronyms that made me want to check them out: BYOB and AYCE. We decided to go there for dinner before heading to the Alamo Theater to see Black Christmas. I am so glad we went early because that AYCE hit me so hard I could barely walk back to the car. Sushi is very deceiving....those little pieces don't look like they would fill you up, but man I was full! The décor itself is cute. There was a big neon Hello Kitty on the outside sign, and walking in we were greeted with lots of what looked like cherry blossom lights strung across the ceiling. Space-wise, it is a small location, but there is a parking lot, which was nice as parking can be hard in that location on Sheridan Road in Uptown. The hostess was very attentive and greeted us very warmly, telling us to sit where we wanted to. She immediately asked if we had been to the location before and when we said no, she began to explain the menu and how we could order. Since me and The Queen both opted for the AYCE, it was simply a matter of ordering. Dinner was $33.95 and well worth the price. Because I brought a bottle, our server provided us with the glassware, two flutes. You are presented a paper menu where you can select what you would like the kitchen to prepare for you, and you also have the option to pull items from the rotary as well. What I like about their rotary is that it is refrigerated. There are doors that you have to raise to grab your selection. While we did grab a couple of items from rotary, the majority of the selections were from the menu. The nice thing about the AYCE is that it not only includes sushi but the ramen and dessert as well. While you have the option of just selecting individual items from the rotary, the AYCE is the better deal in my opinion. If you simply eating from the rotary, the price is based on the plate color, ranging from $3 to $7, I believe. For the ramen, I got the Tonkotsu Ramen. Broth was nice and I am sure the bowl size was not the same was what you would get for $16.99, but that's ok as it was filling. I would have liked to have had another slice of pork in there, as it was tender and delish. Dumplings and shumai were good, just standard and similar to other places I have eaten at. The Steam Pork Bao Buns were small. Sort of reminded me of small street tacos. Flavors were good though. The Seared Scallop Nigiri was very nice....next time I will definitely get more of those and steer away from the other Nigiri, not that they were not good, but that extra rice was filling. We also got the unagi Nigiri and that was also nice. Full disclosure, I selected this by accident and this was my first time having it and I like it, so it was a happy accident. All of the food was fresh, guessing because we were ordering directly from the menu and it was being prepared and all was good. Lesson learned for me, stay away from the rotary. No idea what the voodoo is with that set-up, but for me, watching food roll by just made me want to snatch something off of it. All that rice fills you up. Next time, I will stick to the ramen and dumplings first, then save room for sushi. Dinner ended with our server presenting us with a cup full of markers and an apple cutout made of wood. We were told to decorate it so it could be hung up on the wall, so we did...that was fun. Definitely will come back here to eat, but will do so earlier in the day so I can go home and take a nap afterwards. read more

Discovered this new sushi restaurant and decided to give it a try. My experience is based off my delivery order. The food portion was standard size, and the fish was not the best quality (I guess since it is a conveyor belt sushi restaurant, their focus is more on the in-store experience and environment). Hama Kama: the fish portion was pretty big compared to other restaurants. Nicely grilled, but the sauce was a bit salty (the veggies included didn't help to settle down the saltiness). Hope the sauce can be set on the side, so customers can adjust the taste on our own. Sashimi Don: Again, this Don comes with sauce (most likely mayo) on top. I think customers should have the option to add the sauce on their own. Also, there are barely any sashimi in this. There are plenty of imitation crab and very small chunks of eel) The sashimi are also cut into small cubes. This bowl is not worth of the price, not recommended. Shiitake Roll: the mushrooms are not well seasoned and marinated. Didn't stand out. Ika Nigiri: Comes with mayo on top. The squid is not fresh, don't recommend. Seared Albacore Nigiri: Albacore was nicely seared and seasoned lightly with pepper. Definitely recommend this if you want to try a seared piece. Overall, I give this place a 3.5. The food is fine and I'm sure normal service is great but they have a very inconvenient and short window for TooGoodToGo. And they make you wait beyond the pickup window for it if you get there, I went in earlier at 9:00 PM and that was too early (9:45-10 is pickup, that's fine). But I got back at 9:48 pm and they had us wait til 10:05. That caused me to miss a bus and even a train that I could've taken had they honored their time window like they expect us to do for them. Maybe I'll actually come one day and try the AYCE, but as far as TooGoodToGo is, they are pisspoor at it and shouldn't even do it if they can't do it correctly. read more

So this is basically just Wabi Sabi with a facelift. There's cute things on the menu but the food and the quality is sub par. If you are a fan of the old restaurant the rolls are the same and the (poor) quality of the fish is there too. I still like the rolls that have fruit in them as it makes it more interesting. In the past I have given Wabi Sabi 5 stars as the rolls were sufficiently creative, the price was solid, and it was a unique experience. Given the competitors, Sushi Taku rotary and Sushi+ Rotary just do it better and for a more competitive price. read more

I love that this is near to me! As we all know sushi as a cuisine is very touch and go. It's taken me a while to write this review just because I wanted to eat from here a few times just to see if my stomach wouldn't agree with me. Fortunately enough, I've never had an issue! I'd like to start off by saying that when you visit this restaurant, it's a cute small eatery. They have amazing hours and they have an all-you-can-eat option I believe from 12 PM to 4 PM during the weekday. In this economy you can't beat that. Honestly.. The food is very well prepared, and some of my favorites are the shrimp, tempura crunchy Maki, and the double Unagi Maki . I don't have any pictures because I always eat the food before I remember to take pictures. The menu is extensive, you'll never get bored The staff is always extremely welcoming and understanding, especially if you have a food allergy. Had not seen one of these conveyor type sushi places in many years - Last one was in San Francisco. Small plates with different sushi, sashimi, salads, dim sum, etc that roll by your table and you pick each plate that interests you and eat. It's fun. You pick what looks good and voila! And they look and taste very good. Each plate is color coded and you pay accordingly. The fish in each sushi we tried was fresh and well prepared. There was nice variety between cooked and raw and variety of sushi rolls and fish (salmon, tuna, eel, etc) There were 4 or 5 other tables occupied so plates went quickly and the kitchen kept busy preparing new dishes. Servers refreshed drinks and asked if we wanted other dishes not really suitable for the conveyor that could be ordered separately. Now this is more of a fun place. It's affordable, maybe not the very highest quality sushi you can get in Chicago but very good, it has plastic tables and chairs and the decor is more fitting to a fast food joint but the service, food and vibe more than make up for it. read more

Edit: Had to downgrade to 2 stars very sadly. I came back a second time for their lunch ayce, which was very affordable but the quality was bad. The fish, especially tuna, did not taste fresh (tastes like sliced up tuna steaks that you get from the grocery store with a weird red coloring), and the rice portion for the nigiri was wayyyy too much with a thin slice of fish on top. I ended up ordering a la carte separate from ayce because I couldn't stand the fish-to-rice ratio and the quality. It was not worth the cheaper price in my opinion. The a la carte ones were fresher and the rice portion was more reasonable. Would not recommend ayce here. The next day I got food poisoning with vomiting and had to call in sick, and because of this I don't think I will go back again. I was literally excited to try this one out all week but was sadly disappointed. They told us about how much they charge for not eaten food after they took our plates- I understand having that policy but we told her we had never been there when we first ordered so she knew we had no clue what was happening. Another reason for such a low score is that our waitress never came back to have us order more and when she finally did she told us we were past our time limit and everything would now be full price - which she also never explained to us. Let me also include we were one of three tables seated so it's not like they were busy. I thought it was an alrighty variety and most things tasted pretty good.
