Prices like this need to be earned. The jury is still out whether or not Nori sushi has earned it. I'd ordered a Nigiri special recently, two pieces of Albacore, seared with a little accoutrements, on top of rice. These two were $10. Now, if it an extremely high-quality, expensive cut of fish I might be more understanding. Something simple and slightly elevated doesn't make the cut. A better value was the Crazy Trio. This roll did not skimp on the fish whatsoever. I also loved the use of ginger within the roll itself, and want to recognize that neither the tempura nor the sauces were heavy-handed. Too many places go overboard to the point of cranking out "mayonnaise rolls" more often than not. This one sells for a much more reasonable $16.95 While prices can be hit or miss, overall, Nori Sushi delivers on above-average quality, but not at the level of more premium sushi spots (like Blowfish on Bryn Mawr, for example). When it comes to the service, while the food came out in a reasonable time frame, I felt it was otherwise a little inattentive. Final verdict: Nori sushi is a fine neighborhood sushi spot, that isn't a destination by any means, but works for when you're craving sushi and are in the area. I always opt for a bento box so I can get a little of everything and Nori does a great job on not skimping on their's. The food was really good and the portions are amazing. The chashu rice bowl (pork) was tasty but for someone who doesn't like a lot of vegetable vegetables and a lot of ginger. It was a lot of onions and too much ginger. But for someone who loves lots of onions and ginger, this would be a great dish and tons of food. The decor is really adorable and lots of cats everywhere and there's a lot of lettering on the walls like a chalkboard and the Chicago flag. Has sushi on it with four sushi pieces. BYOB! Only street parking and you have to pay $2.50 per hour. If you do residential parking, then you have to have a permit so be careful and watch the signs. The restaurant is cute when you walk in and seems like a casual sushi place. We went at 6pm on a Saturday and it was pretty empty. They were playing lounge mixes of pop songs which was not my taste personally. After sitting down I was disappointed to find that there wasn't a physical menu, but instead a QR code you had to scan to see the options. The waitress brought waters out pretty quickly and then they gave us a water jug. All the dishes came with miso soup which was warm and honestly very good. They brought the miso soup out within 5 minutes of ordering and the entrees followed closely behind which was nice. The poke bowl portion is a little smaller than I expected, but the quality of fish and the ingredients was good. I liked that they gave a test tube of sauce to pour on top, which tasted a little bit like wasabi. Overall the food was good, but my gripe was with the way the check was broken down. We were a group of 5 and no where did it says that gratuity for parties over 4 was automatically factored in. On the receipt it was listed as "20% gratuity is optional but appreciated", but since it was already factored into the total price we just paid it. Because of that we didn't leave any additional tip. After the waitress picked up the check she was clearly upset and kept shooting rude looks at our table and was pointing at our table while talking to other servers. The restaurant was still pretty empty, but we left promptly. Ultimately the treatment after we didn't leave an additional tip on top of the 20% and the small portion size of the poke bowl is what led to this being 3 stars. Nori has been a favorite for years. All the locations are great. They used to do half off maki on Mondays here, but they no longer do. The service is always great and you can bring in your own drinks. They do check the percentage on sake so you can't get too crazy. What a great place to get food! TLDR: Great food, great service, chill vibes, great prices, will be coming again for sure! So, my partner and I visited for lunch, around 1 pm. We've never been but walking in, the decor was chill but also I can see how it could be busy at night. So note this: We love Japanese food and they were craving sushi and I was craving ramen but when we got there, we flipped our choices and chose to get lunch bento boxes and we were not disappointed! So, firstly, we ordered edamame and takoyaki for appetizers. The salt with the edamame looked great and tasted great! Then the takoyaki was so fresh that we blinked and they were gone. Also, the lunch bento boxes came with miso and that bowl of miso was so so good during a 40 degree day. Then the bento boxes came. The presentation? So clean! Salad? Bomb. California maki? Yum! Wasabi? Fresh. Ginger? Ate mine and my partners lol! I split my katsu with my partner's food and traded them katsu for veggie tempura, and that was a great decision because their tempura? SO GOOD. Got lunch here on a Saturday and the food was awesome! It's a relatively small space on the inside, but they also have a patio. The food came out quickly and someone came by often to refill our water glasses, which was much appreciated. I got a couple pieces of nigiri, and the fish was so fresh! I'll start this off by saying the second star is entirely for our super sweet and attentive waitress, who brought us extra bowls to share our ramen and extra plates for the appetizer and then actually chased me down outside in the cold to bring me my credit card that I forgot inside the bill folder. Because the food? Quite possibly the worst Japanese food I've had in years. I kind of intuited that was going to happen when I saw the menu, which was way too broad, with dishes from all sorts of other Asian countries thrown in there, and when I smelled the air inside the restaurant, which smelled like a fish counter mixed with sewage. But I gamely tried anyway and just avoided the raw fish - we got takoyaki and tonkotsu ramen. The takoyaki was runny in the middle, topped with an ungodly amount of mayo, filled with a microscopic octopus speck, and then mixed with carrots instead of bonito flakes for some reason. The ramen broth tasted exactly like instant, had a fully cooked hardboiled egg in there (no runny soy sauce egg here!) and a hunk of rubbery pork topping a clump of soft yellowish noodles. Its only savings grace was the healthy amounts of spinach, wakame, bamboo, and asparagus (?!) studding it, because at least it was kind of healthy in the end. read more

First of all the chairs are impossible to sit in comfortably. If you think I'm joking please go to this place and try to sit without slipping out of your chair. Second of all the service was mediocre and there was a 20% gratuity automatically added to the bill. We were a party of THREE. There were no signs mentioning this, nothing in the menu - that is THEFT. I tip well and go above 18% when the server deserves it but our server was passive aggressive and did the bare minimum. He did not deserve a 20% tip- it's a very small restaurant and he didn't do anything to deserve that. Without warning customers of this policy the restaurant is committing theft. Sushi was ALRIGHT, 6.5/10 - prices are much higher than they should be for the value of the sushi. I don't recommend this place and will never go here again because of this gratuity policy without warning. Maybe if the sushi was amazing I'd change my mind but it wasn't. Nori had a large outdoor patio with both picnic benches and some outdoor tables. Also big plus in that it's byob. There is a liquor store down the street or Devon market a little further. The menu is very broad with sushi, ramen, poke and more. We haven't ventured too far from the sushi when dining there or doing carryout. Definitely recommend the Mexican maki and summer roll. Getting a table outside can ge a little tricky cause some people wait outside and others go to the the inside host. The last time we were there some folks came and took the table we were waiting for that was being cleaned. The waitress quickly told them we had been waiting and they said the inside host said they could have this table. - We got the table and all was well as they got one 5 minutes later. A sign outside as you enter the patio might help clear up how folks should get a table when they are busy. read more

Nori Sushi in Edgewater has been the go to place for both my fiancé and me since our first date. We have been to Nori more times then we can count. The inside of Nori is absolutely beautiful. I love all of the murals on the wall and the setup of the furniture inside. Nori is a great place for parties of four or less. I love that Nori is BYOB which changes the whole vibe of the visit. The employees at Nori have always made us feel like we are apart of the family. My fiancé loves extra spicy food and the wait staff are always willing to bring him the private collection of spices. I am a creature of habit so I was get the pad see ew. I cannot get over how consistently they make the dish. They always have a nice amount of chicken in the dish, unlike a lot of other places that give you enough chicken to barely remember that you ordered the chicken. Nori seems to do their noodle dishes really well from what I have tasted with the other dishes that I have tried from the many times that my fiancé has ordered food. The only criticism I have is that the service is pretty slow regardless of how busy they are, we started asking for the check pretty early as you usually have to ask multiple times. Nori is my girlfriend and I's absolute favorite restaurant in Rogers Park/Edgewater. They switch up the decor per season and holiday so it always looks super cute. The service is superb and our favorite server Oak goes above and beyond to create a great dining experience for us. The food has never let us down, it is seriously so good. Sushi is normally so expensive, so I appreciate that everyday, there is 50% off Nori Maki until 4pm and all day on Mondays!! Unfortunately, the rolls are rather small... so the special Makis are better but definitely pricier. Those are 20% off on Thursdays. I tried their katsu chicken bento box. It came with miso soup, 3 pieces of gyoza, salad, california roll, and rice for $12! Such a great deal. I've had a variety of their sushi - hard for me to remember their names, but none of them have really been disappointing enough for me to never want to order again. This restaurant is owned by Thai people lol I don't get why this is a thing in Chicago, but at least the sushi is still good. I LOVE THE THAI ICED TEA here. For $2.50, it's a large cup! I've come here twice during lunch. My first time I took advantage of the half off nori maki lunch special. I always enjoy trying the more basic sushi rolls to see if I like things before going for the more pricey specialty rolls. Coming for lunch is a pretty good deal when the sushi is half off. I really enjoyed the salmon skin roll - great crunch, great flavors, wonderful combo of ingredients! The next time I came, I was using a Groupon that was quickly expiring. I had $40 to kill and this groupon could not be used on any lunch specials. Thus, I decided to order some specialty rolls and try their ramen! Their specialty rolls really impressed me!! The Salmon King was a wonderful combo of ingredients I've never seen any sushi restaurant offer! The combo of shitake, real crab, advocado, salmon, ikura, and wasabi tobiko was really refreshing! The Chicago Crazy Crunchy was not as amazing to me just because most of the flavors of the fish were hidden behind the heavy unagi and spicy mayo sauce they put on top. It was a tasty roll but I'd like to taste my fish if I'm paying $16 for a roll. Overall, I'd come back and try more of their specialty rolls based on this experience. In terms of their ramen, they make the broth in house. It's really the only reason one should ever order ramen at a restaurant! I decided to try the tonkatsu ramen. While my mind wasn't blown away by the ramen, it had a light pork flavor and the noodles held up well. The 2 pieces of pork were tender and tasted nice. Overall a nice bowl of ramen but don't come here expecting this to hold up to ramen from specialty restaurants. Overall a great place to come for sushi or if you're craving some hot dishes - they offer a variety as well. This place can accommodate groups and offers specials every day of the week.
